Chapter Four: Time Spent Together

Over the next few days, the pair spent increasingly more time together coordinating with caterers and vendors. The gala was to draw in a higher class crowd, Demons and humans alike with deep pockets that came from very old money. It wouldn't be just old demon families that attended but humans as well. They were curious about this school and wanted to see more integration with the community as they saw the benefits of mixing their kind. It surprised them how welcoming high society had been. They had settled on a night under the stars theme which Sesshomaru thought would be fitting considering the woman who sat next to him. They discussed décor, food and thank you gifts. Normally this would bore him but somehow she made it fascinating and valued his opinion on everything.

"I think we should have a live band over a DJ, sets a more romantic tone"

"Hn"

"I'm glad you agree," said Serena as she shot him a grin. Over the past few days, she had grown a lot more comfortable with him. Teasing him many times and she was the only one who he let get away with it. Many times poking fun back at her which shocked many in the office.

Over the time they had spent together, Serena had picked up on his subtle behaviour patterns and which grunt meant he agreed and which meant he did not. He had a hard time keeping his mask up considering how closely they sat. Her scent covered his office long after she would leave for the night, he found himself addicted. The last few days had been exceedingly enjoyable for him, he found himself relaxed in her presence and was excited to get to work to spend it with her. He loved his work but something about spending the day close to her left him feeling like an excited pup.

"I hope this goes well, your father seems very keen on it. I would hate to disappoint him" a look he couldn't quite pin passed across her features.

"He will be pleased" he stated "will your parents be joining the evening?"

Serena stiffened at the mention of her parents, she hadn't thought of them in years. She tried to push them to the farthest part of her mind, it hurt too much to know she couldn't have saved any of them. Closing her eyes she thought back to the way her father's laughed boomed through the halls or how her mother always smelled of flowers. Her eyes filled with unshed tears.

"Serena?" Sesshomaru said hesitantly reaching out to touch her shoulder. Had he brought up a painful subject? He could smell the tears barely keeping themselves contained in her eyes.

Her gaze snapped to him, her bright smiling mask back in place. "Sorry" she laughed "got distracted um no they aren't coming"

She stood up gathering everything "you know what? I think I have everything I need to finish this, I'll let you get back to your work I know how busy you get with everything being the next in line and all" she rambled.

"You don't need to leave" he started standing up from his desk. She walked towards the door shaking her head "no, no it's alright, thank you Sesshomaru for all your help"

Looking back to him, she stared at him drinking in his features "I meant it, thank you Sesshomaru for everything." He was left feeling confused, what just happened? They were having such a good time. He went to follow her when his phone rang, growling he answered it quickly stating he was busy and to call later. He wanted to know how he upset her and maybe ask her to dinner to make up for it.

She left shutting the door behind her and ran straight into another, falling to the floor. All her papers fluttered to the ground as she looked up into the narrowed eyes of a woman. She had long straight black hair and piercing eyes. She was tall and wearing a tight red dress with extremely high heels.

"I am so sorry Miss…" started Serena as she gathered up her work

"Kagura. What were you doing in my Sesshomaru's office?" she sneered her lip curling up

Serena stopped and looked at her "Yours?" She hadn't realized he was taken by another, though not surprised considering he was handsome, smart and one of the most eligible men in the city. It felt like a bucket of ice-cold water had been thrown on her, every fantasy she had of being with him shattered in that moment.

"Yes, mine. I am his girlfriend thank you very much. Now are you going to answer my question or are you incapable of that?" she said looking disgusted at Serena.

Suddenly Sesshomaru's office door opened, he had heard the commotion and was concerned for Serena. He looked down to see her on her knees picking up all the work they had completed and Kagura standing over her trying to look superior. Of course, she had to show up when things were just going well between the two. He had hoped to talk to Serena and get her to join him for dinner that evening.

"Just work that's all" She stood up not taking the outstretched hand of Sesshomaru, she felt stupid. "I need to get back to work, nice to meet you Kagura. I'll let you two go." She turned walking to her office before he could introduce her. She didn't want to hear the words "this is my girlfriend" fall from his lips when talking about another.

'I am such a fool, of course, he is taken. Why would you think for a minute a man like him wouldn't be?' she slammed her office door closed and sunk to the ground. Maybe this move was not such a good idea. She let her tears fall thinking of the things she told herself she didn't want but now with that silver-haired man, it was all she wanted.

Kagura smirked turning to Sesshomaru "hey you" she said licking her lips. He scowled in response.

"What are you doing here Kagura?" he demanded. Sesshomaru had about a thousand things he wished to do at that moment and none of them included Kagura.

"I'm here to see you, of course, it has been two months you know" sliding closer to him, running one of her long claws down his chest. He removed it with disgust. Her scent was drowned in perfume and her face caked with makeup. The woman wore clothing that left nothing to the imagination and reeked of numerous men. Additionally, she wasn't particularly nice. She was not someone he would have ever looked twice at let alone introduce to his daughter and family but he had needs and she had satisfied those needs, once. He knew he had made a terrible error in judgment the moment it was done. It was a mistake since she couldn't take no for answer.

"And I told you then, that was a one time rut and nothing more. I have no interest in being anything to you so do not embarrass yourself further"

She growled, "I am perfect for you in every way so why delay the inevitable and just mate me!"

"You are not worthy of this one's time nor affections" he glanced at Serena's door.

Toga stuck his head out of his office hearing the commotion and scowled, he hated that insufferable woman. It was inappropriate for her to just show up at their place of business and try to air out any issue she had. Toga wasn't stupid, he knew Sesshomaru had made the terrible mistake of sleeping with the woman. He glanced at Sesshomaru with a look that said 'take care of this boy or I will.'

"And what, she is?" Kagura scoffed noticing his gaze trained on that woman's door "she is a pathetic human who probably has never satisfied a man before. She won't be enough for you, I am a demoness and much more powerful than her. I could just get rid of her you know then you will pick me"

Sesshomaru snarled, grabbed her arm digging his claws into her skin and pulled her to the elevator "let me say this plainly for you one more time, I do not want you. Do not show up here again or I will not be so kind the next time and if you go near her I will end your pathetic existence slowly and painfully"

Sesshomaru could hear her screech as the doors closed. He looked to Serena's door, what did she say to the woman? Should he clear up that he is not attached? He enjoyed the last few days they had spent together, he felt he could be himself around her. What would he say though? That Kagura was just some woman he had fucked when he was lonely? That she meant nothing? He didn't want her thinking less of him. Sesshomaru thought back to the other day and the way she looked at him.

***Yesterday***

"Of course there will be dancing Sesshomaru!"

"Why?" he groaned.

"It adds to the atmosphere and makes people want to give more. Romance has a way of doing that you know, you open people's hearts and they open their wallets"

He grumbled rubbing his forehead, they had been discussing this for the better part of an hour. He enjoyed dancing do not be mistaken but every time they went to an event women would flock to him demanding dances all night. She laughed and he stopped. Her laugh sounded angelic and at that moment he wished to hear it again every day for the rest of his life.

"Oh Sesshomaru do you not know how to dance?" she teased

"This one knows how to dance quite well thank you" he answered looking exasperated

"Uh-huh sure"

He narrowed his eyes "You doubt my word?"

Serena shook her head, a smirk playing on her lips. 'So she is teasing me' he thought.

"No, if you say you do then I am sure you do, not many would believe you but I do"

Sesshomaru suddenly stood and held out his hand "then I shall prove it"

Serena stared up at him "what? You want to dance here? Now? With me?"

He nodded and Perfect by Ed Sheeran came on. She looked at him incredulously

"What?"

"Nothing just never pegged you for a romance type of guy"

She placed her small hand in his large one and he pulled her to her feet. He placed his one hand on the small of her back, grasping her other and pulled her body close to his.

"This one cannot be pegged" he whispered noticing her breathing pattern changed as a blush crept along her cheeks. The song played as the couple waltzed around the room, he was impressed by how well she danced. Most did not know dances from the days of royalty or if they did they butchered it. She flowed gracefully across the floor like she was meant to be there. She let him lead her around and around his office, her gaze never leaving his. He twirled her, pulling her against his chest. Their feet seeming to know exactly where to step and they anticipated each other move like they were one. Her eyes sparkled with happiness, his large hand wrapped around her small waist gripping it tightly. As the dance ended, he dipped her low allowing her head to fall back exposing her neck. Sesshomaru pulled her up and flush to his body, she was softly panting. He suddenly wished the song had never ended.

He straightened and dropped her hand "you were saying?"

She smiled "I can admit when I am wrong, I hope you will save a dance for me"

He brushed a piece of hair behind her ear "I will save them all for you"

Sesshomaru thought about knocking but noticed Kagome and the girls strolling over to her door. Now was not the time but soon, very soon.
