Chapter Six: Avoidance

Serena sat in her living room reading, she had taken the last two days off claiming family emergency. The first day she spent ignoring his phone calls and everyone else's as well. She answered Kagome's letting her know what was happening and why she had taken those days off, which seem to placate her. She spent the rest of her time training with her staff and mediating. Serena needed to clear her mind and remind herself what her only duty was, to protect the crystal.

A few days after their night out and Serena could still feel his hands on her hips, his breath on the back of her neck and the way he looked at her. It filled her soul up, she felt complete in his arms. Her mother would describe to her the feeling that she would have when she finally met her soul match, it would feel like coming home. That piece of you that felt like it was missing, would be filled in. For years after that night she would lay awake thinking about the fact that she would never get to have that feeling. She was going to be killed so why bother hoping for love? Now here he was in all his god-like glory and she couldn't have him. He had Kagura. Serena sighed feeling frustrated, 'even if he was available, you can put him at risk because of your feelings.'

She felt angry tears well in her eyes, she felt like she was finally accepting being alone and then he came walking into that office, throwing everything out of whack. Sereia threw her book across the room in frustration.

"Ugh!" she groaned "stop thinking about him Serena, what are you doing?"

Serena paced her small living room. She kept the cottage she first lived in when she shared it with Luna. Serena had loved Luna like she was her grandmother. Luna cared for her, trained her and prepared her for life after she passed. She came here when she needed to be closer to the memory of her family, to train or just take a breath. It was a two-bedroom cottage with a decent-sized living room, bathroom and kitchen. It was outside the city limits and her nearest neighbour was a good four miles away. Her backyard overlooked a beautiful field of flowers and a forest that she loved to run in. Her parents wanted to ensure she had privacy and the feel of nature surrounding her. Her mother had told her about her love for Earth and how she had made some life long friends when she used to visit as a young girl.

She stood up stretching, maybe a run would help. She changed into black leggings and a sports bra slipping on her runners and earbuds. Serena took off from her deck spiriting through her backyard through the forest taking one of the many trails. She loved to run, it allowed her a moment to be one with her thoughts and remind herself how strong her body was. She pushed her body to go farther. She focused on her breathing and the feel of the ground beneath her feet. She continued for three miles when she felt her phone buzz. It was Inuyasha.

"Hello Inu" she said pausing to lean against a tree a little out of breath.

"Hey little sister" he replied "you okay?" his voice laced with concern.

Serena was confused, why was he calling? Kagome probably put him up to it, not believing her lie. She panted for a moment before answering.

"Yea why?"

"Dad said you took two days off for a family emergency, we wanted to make sure everything was okay." Serena tried not to groan, now she was going to have to lie to him too. What was she suppose to say "oh yea your brother and I almost kissed the other night and I'm avoiding him. By the way, he is my soul match and I'm a Princess from the moon who is being hunted by a psychopath that wants to kill me like he murdered my family." Yea that would go over so well. So she stuck to her original lie and hoped he bought it.

"Yes I did, my grandmother is ill"

"I'm sorry. I didn't know you had any family…out here I mean. I hope she gets better soon"

"Thank you Inu, I'll be back at work tomorrow" jogging back to her house, she was sweaty and needed a shower. Hopefully she could work the tension out of her muscles and head.

"Why do you sound so out of breath? shit did I like interrupt a thing?" disgust undertoned his voice.

She rolled her eyes "no Inuyasha, I was out for a run. Needed to clear my head that's all."

"Do you want some company? I can come up and help you or one of the girls?"

"NO!" Serena exclaimed "I mean no it's okay I can handle it. My grandmother isn't a fan of strangers."

"Okay if you are sure" he replied then paused for a moment talking to someone in the background "hold on someone wants to talk to you."

She paused hoping it was Toga or Kagome.

"Hello, Serena" a deep voice came over the phone.

"Sesshomaru" she replied clenched "what can I help you with?"

"Why so formal little star? I would have thought the other night would have earned me less formality"

"Sesshomaru…" she sighed "I can't do this right now. You have someone who you should be focusing your attention on anyways."

She walked up to her backyard and paused.

"I can have my attention divided" he growled. She almost scoffed, she was no second woman. If she was to have him then she wanted all of him.

"I have to go."

"Serena…"

"Goodbye Sesshomaru."

She ended the call before he could interrupt her, she knew she would be displeased by that but she needed a moment. A moment to breathe before he rejected her.
