Chapter Seven: Tension

It has been a week since that night and Sesshomaru found himself getting frustrated. 'She is ignoring me' he thought raking his nails through his hair, first she took time off claiming a family emergency though he didn't believe her and now she was outright avoiding him. They had almost kissed that night, the way her body felt against him he couldn't get that image out of his head. Serena spent most of her time with Sango and Miroku in the school. They were running a few mock days to ensure it ran smoothly. Or so she said, he believed it was more a ploy to stay far away from him. Rin and Shippo luckily happily volunteered to be the students. So he at least had the few minutes when he dropped her off and picked her up to see his little star. Rin adored Serena and followed her like she was her mother. A few times she even slipped up and called her mama but Serena would just smile and call her, her sweet girl.

Every time he picked up Rin, she wouldn't look at him. Was she suddenly repulsed by him? No that couldn't be it. She blushed when he was near not to mention he could smell her arousal. He needed to know the real reason, it was driving him mad. Izayoi had dropped Rin off the last two days since he had early meetings but today when he picked her up, he would try to get answers.

"Uncle!"

Sesshomaru grunted as Shippo launched himself. He caught him easily chuckling.

"Shippo"

"Hi Uncle" he sat him on his lap confused. 'Why is Shippo up here?'

"Shippo!" yelled Kagome running in panting "demon kids and their boundless energy will be the death of me I swear" She leaned over placing her hands on her knees taking deep breathes.

"I believe that is all children dear sister"

She glared back at him. Sesshomaru looked down at his nephew "you shouldn't run from your mother kit"

He pouted "I just wanted to come tell you myself, it was my job"

Kagome grumbled taking off her heels "Ugh my feet"

"Tell me what?"

"Rin isn't feeling well. She threw up a few times. Serena has her downstairs waiting for you" Kagome interjected.

"MAMA! I wanted to tell him, Miss Serena said it was my job" Shippo cried. Kagome shrugged

"I'm sorry Shippo, she did say that"

Sesshomaru put him on the floor, handing him a lollipop from his drawer. He kept little treats for the children in there, not many knew that or he would be accused of being soft. His reputation could not have that.

"Thank you to you both for telling me"

He quickly made his way to his daughter.

***Meanwhile***

Serena had Rin wrapped up in her arms, rocking and rubbing her back.

"I don't feel good" she cried

"I know my sweet girl. Your Daddy will be here soon"

She was greatly concerned for the small child in her arms. Rin had arrived this morning fine albeit a little sleepy but that was normal considering she was not a morning person. Today, however, she was quieter then normally and began complaining of a tummy ache. When she started to throw up, Serena knew it was serious calling Kagome to come get Shippo and tell Sesshomaru what was happening. Her only concern was Rin's health and safety, Serena would do anything for her.

"Where does it hurt? Show me"

Rin pointed to her stomach, whimpering before falling asleep. Serena bit her lip 'let me try one thing' she thought dropping her concealment. A gold upturned crescent moon appeared in the middle of her forehead. She closed her eyes and gathered pure lunar energy into her hand.

"Mercury scan" she whispered hoping not to wake the sleeping child or bring any attention to the room. The last she needed was trying to explain who she was, she passed her hand across the girl's stomach. 'There it is' she thought sending her silent thanks to Guardian Mercury. 'She had a hole in her stomach lining, how did that happen?'

That could become very dangerous for someone so young and small. Serena stared at Rin's small face, she could help her, make it all go away. 'That's dangerous. If you use the crystal, Sion could see the power signature and find you' she debated with herself 'but it has been fifty years and he has never found you…it only takes one time though.'

Rin let out a small whimper clutching at her stomach, which sealed her decision. A look of determination came across Serena's face 'Fuck it, I'll deal with the consequences.' She closed her eyes "please silver crystal help me" she pooled white light into her hand, she pressed it against Rin's stomach. She concentrated and focused her energy on healing her. She could feel her stomach closing the hole, healing her.

'That may end up costing me but if I can't use my powers to help then what is the point?' she thought 'if need be I'll run, find a new place and settle there'.

She pulled the power back, the light disappearing. Serena took a deep breath, any use of the silver crystal cost energy so it wasn't used often. She pulled her concealment back up. Checking her temperature, she was pleased to find it was dropping. She would be out sick for a couple of days max but she would be okay. Serena wiped a tear away, thanking the stars and crystal for helping the girl. She rocked Rin and hummed a lullaby her mother used to sing to her. That's how Sesshomaru found them and his heart lurched. It was a beautiful sight. She looked like a mother comforting her child, as Serena brushed the hair from Rin's face, a thought struck him. No wonder he was frustrated at her for ignoring him or why he felt the need to have more than a rut with her.

'I'm in love with her' he thought. The realization hit him like a ton of bricks. This woman had snuck into his heart and woken him up in a matter of weeks. It had happened so fast he didn't fully realize it, until this moment. He smiled. She was everything he didn't realize he desperately needed in his life. Sometimes you find love in the most unexpected people. He had never had a mate before so he didn't realize how quickly it happened with Inus. His father had briefly discussed when he was a pup but Sesshomaru being the cold and standoffish person he was, didn't take him seriously.

When Rin was well, he was going to corner her and speak to her, he would tell her how he felt and just prayed she felt the same way.

"I hear Rin is sick"

Serena looked up and nodded putting her finger to her lips. She couldn't help but stare at the silver-haired man before her. He could always take her breath away.

"Shh I just got her asleep" she whispered beckoning him closer "It's a low-grade fever and she was throwing up but I think she is done. She should be fine in a day or two."

He nodded taking the sleeping girl from her arms. This was the first time they had been this close and touched since that night. He missed it and craved more. But right now he needed to be a father, Rin snuggled her face into his neck.

"Thank you" he said.

Serena nodded handing over her backpack. As he took it, he ran his finger over her knuckle.

"Hmm daddy can we go home?" a sleepy voice asked.

"Yes baby we can" he nodded to Serena turning to leave.

"Bye mama" Rin said before falling back asleep. Both adults stopped and Serena thought she may cry, she wished she could be her mother. But with the possibility of Sion finding her now and that she may have to run, she would never be able to. Not to mention Sesshomaru was dating Kagura, she would get to be Rin's mother not her. Sesshomaru noticed her sad smile, noting to ask her about it later.

When Sesshomaru left, Serena picked up her phone dialling a familiar number.

"Hi, it's me, I need new papers," She said trying not to cry "I know I haven't been but I have to. I have no choice. How long?" she paused looking around at all her hard work "2 weeks? Okay."

Two weeks and then she would disappear.

***Elsewhere***

Elsewhere, a voice broke through the never-ending darkness. "I've finally found you, little moon Princess. You couldn't hide forever." Two purple eyes glared at the screen showing a large usage of pure light power used. Right at Taisho Corp on Earth.

"Are you sure it is her?" a voice asked. The man smiled and leaned forward, his purple eyes glinting in the darkness.

"We soon shall see" a blade glinted in his hand. He would find out and then the games could begin. By the time he was done toying with her, she would be begging for the sweet releases of death.
