Chapter Ten: Sickness

By the following morning, the wound on her side had begun to show signs of healing though not at the normal rate. Her skin was purple with black veins spreading from it, it was getting worse. She went from hot to cold. Her skin was clammy and she couldn't stop shivering. Every time she tried to stand, her head would get fuzzy and she couldn't make it more than two steps before falling. She didn't sleep more than a few minutes at a time before a jolt of pain woke her. Was he trying to kill her or torture her? At this point, she couldn't tell.

'I'm going to get mother's transformation brooch and hopefully be able to get home before everyone gets here' she thought trying to pull herself up to her feet. She cursed herself for not going home last night. It was early, the sun had just risen. No one had yet arrived or so she thought. She wore loose-fitting warm clothing to try to stop the chills. She stumbled to her safe, leaning against the wall. She felt so weak. It took what little strength she did have to get off the floor. She dug her dull nails into the wall and leaned her head against the cool wall taking a breath. 'One step at a time, you can do this. You are a Queen for stars' sake' she thought her breath hitching as a jolt of pain coursed through her. Serena could feel the poison coursing through her sapping her life away. She wasn't sure what she was going to do.

"You didn't call me"

Serena turned her head to look to the door to where Sesshomaru was standing. His face went from displeased to shock to concern.

"Sesshomaru" she whispered her eyelids fluttering, feeling herself fall. In a second she was in his arms.

"Kami what happened?" he put his hand to her forehead "you are burning up!"

'This doesn't look like a stomach bug. She looks so weak' he thought. He mentally slapped himself for not going to her sooner. He has assumed she didn't call because she was asleep, he didn't want to disturb her. When he arrived and saw her car already there he had thought she was feeling better so he was ready to playfully give her trouble for not calling him. But to find her barely able to stand before collapsing caused an emotion he had never felt before. Fear.

He looked down at the barely conscious woman in his arms, her breathes were coming out in short gasps like she was in agony. Her brow was sweaty but she was shivering, this was not a common cold. He felt his beast surge forward.

"Come let's get you to the couch" Sesshomaru easily lifted her bridal style, his hand brushing against the wound site. Serena let out a loud and painful scream, his face scrunched in concern.

"It hurts" she weakly cried

"FATHER!" he roared gently placing her on the couch.

The family rushed in hearing his cry for help and her scream.

"Serena!"

"What the fuck?"

They ran over "what happened son?" Toga asked taking in the scene.

Serena laid on the couch, pale and in obvious extreme pain. She was clutching Sesshomaru's forearms as tears pouring from her eyes. He sniffed the air…blood, it was faint but it was there.

"I don't know" he growled "I came to check on her and I found her like this" his eyes turned to Toga, bleeding red "Father I smell blood"

Sesshomaru lifted her shirt noticing the dressing. He removed it slowly exposing the infection, it looked like someone had stabbed her with a small blade. He snarled. The black veins spread from the stab site, the skin around it had turned a dark purple. This was not something his tongue could heal, he wasn't sure what it was or how she got it.

His eyes narrowed putting his hands on her face trying to get her to look at him "who did this?"

Serena groaned "he-Moors-Sion" she panted as the tears fell down her face. Sesshomaru snarled, they had let that man into their office and this is how he repaid them? He had touched her, smiled at her and then when Sesshomaru was gone he attacked her. Toga went into Alpha mode and began barking orders at the others.

"Koga, you and I will go look at the security tapes. Miroku go get your prayer beads we will need them. Sango, Ayame call front desk. We are shut down today, no one is come into these offices" He turned to leave putting his hand on Inuyasha's shoulder whispering "Stay with your brother. If she dies, he won't be able to control himself"

Inuyasha nodded his gaze flicking to Serena and his brother. Kagome immediately went to her side wiping the sweat from her brow with a damp cloth. Inuyasha felt so helpless in that moment 'she has to be okay' he thought glancing at his brother 'for him.'

"Sesshomaru help me get her sweater off" Kagome commanded trying not to show the worry her eyes held.

Sesshomaru lifted her weak body enough for Kagome to remove her shirt. She grimaced at the sight of the poison spreading so quickly. Serena groaned in response to being moved.

"Can you heal her?" he pleaded looking to Kagome.

Kagome looked to her mate then Sesshomaru. She didn't want to give him false hope.

"I don't know. I've never seen anything like this" Kagome examined her "I'm going to try but…you need to prepare yourself" she choked "in case I fail"

Kagome felt her lip tremble trying to hold back the tears, her sister was in pain and dying in front of her. She hated herself suddenly for telling Sesshomaru not to go to her last night. Kagome took a deep breath trying to steady herself, she felt a hand on her arm and looked down. Serena had grasped her arm trying to comfort her with a soft smile. She could see how distraught Kagome was and was trying to make her feel better. Kagome bit back a sob, even now when she was dying she was still trying to make sure everyone else was okay.

Sesshomaru stood snarling. He paced her office, his eyes bleeding red as he felt his beast surge forward. 'Our mate is hurt, we will kill who did this.' He stared at her writhing on the couch. He felt his control slipping, his mate to be was dying and he failed in protecting her. His chest heaved as his fangs lengthened, he cracked his fingers waiting to drive them through someone.

Inuyasha took a tentative step towards him. It was probably a mistake as his brother would most likely stab him but he couldn't transform here, he would take out the whole floor and Serena needed him. He had to calm down.

"Brother, you need to calm yourself" Inuyasha cautioned placing his hand on his brother's shoulder. Red eyes glared at him, his marks growing jagged. He snapped grabbing him by the throat and lifting him off the floor, choking him.

"Do not tell this one what to do" He snarled. Poison began dripping from his claws onto the floor, dissolving the hardwood.

"Do it for her" he choked out "she needs you." Inuyasha tried to peel his fingers from this throat to no avail, Sesshomaru was leagues stronger then Inuyasha.

"Sesshomaru please stop!" cried Kagome from her spot behind Serena. She held a cool cloth to her forehead. She wanted to run to her mate but knew it was too dangerous to get in between them right now. Sesshomaru had little control over his beasts actions especially when it came to the safety of his mate.

"Sesshomaru" a weak voice cut through the fog. Sesshomaru stopped, his mate needed him close, his touch.

He released Inuyasha who fell to the ground coughing. His eyes returning to gold and his beast growling in the background. He was back at her side in a flash. He grasped her small hand and kissed it.

"I'm right here"

Inuyasha coughed loudly looking shocked at Kagome then to Serena, she wasn't his mate yet but was able to calm his beast so quickly. That was rarely heard of, Kagome would not have been able to do that before they had mated.

Kagome leaned back on her heels and clasped her hands in prayer. Her pink reiki surrounding her, lighting her hair slightly. She was the Shikon Miko, protector of the Shikon no Tama. The sacred jewel was the most powerful on earth. 'If anyone could save her, it would be Kagome' Inuyasha thought to keep a close eye on his mate. Miroku returned and joined Kagome, wrapping his beads around his hands chanting. He may not be as powerful as Kagome but he could lend her his energy.

Sesshomaru could do nothing but watch as she laid in pain. His mind was racing, what had happened when he left her? She was fine then said she had the flu which was a lie than to find out this Mr. Moors had attacked her and now his little star lay here dying? He needed answers and someone to kill. Kagome and Miroku had been unsuccessfully trying to heal Serena for numerous hours but it felt like a lifetime to Sesshomaru. They were making no headway, if any the veins were spreading more. 'What darkness is this?' Kagome thought, feeling useless, 'why isn't this working?' She growled frustrated that nothing seemed to be happening.

"Kagome?"

Her eyes locked onto his, she could see the fear in his eyes. Something she had never seen before, he was genuinely frightened that she was going to fail.

"I'm trying Sesshomaru" she grunted out "this is an unnatural darkness I have never felt before. I don't understand how she survived this long." This was taking a lot of energy, if they kept going this way, in a few hours they would be spent. Then Serena would be lost to them forever. She looked to Sesshomaru again, he had never seen him more complete or happy then when he met her. Even if it killed her, she would keep going. Serena whimpered as tears fell from her eyes. Sesshomaru couldn't lose her now, not when he just got her.

"Sesshomaru" she whispered

"Yes my love?" he asked leaning over her, his large hand cradling her face.

"If I die…" she started.

He growled forcing her to look into his golden depths "You will not die you hear me? I forbid it"

She smiled softly "But if I do, there is something in my safe. It will explain everything" she gazed deep into his eyes pleading with him "you must protect it. He can't get his hands on it."

"You. Are. Not. Dying" he repeated firmly. He would not allow her to leave him now.

Toga and Koga returned with a copy of the security video, their anger rolling off them in waves. Toga bristled looking at the small female on the couch, she looked so close to death. Her skin unnaturally pale and she was drenched in sweat. As an alpha and a father he felt helpless, useless. They had watched the security tape in Koga's office numerous times, they had to take a few moments to calm themselves. Koga ripped the door off his office in a rage. They had no choice but to show Sesshomaru what they found.

"Son"

Sesshomaru looked up to his father who motioned for him to come over. He kissed Serena's brow before going to stand next to his father. They played the security tape from the parking garage. They saw Serena leave the elevator walking to her car with Ozias following her then trapping her. They spoke for a moment. Then he watched as the man pulled out a sharp blade stabbing his little star. He growled at the shocked look on her face then a light appeared on her forehead, what was that? He tried to peer closer. Suddenly, she crumpled to the ground and he stood over her laughing! That vile disgusting vermin. He slammed the lid closed unable to watch anymore.

"I'll kill him"

Toga nodded. This man injured his soon to be daughter in law. Pack law must be upheld and it was his duty as Alpha to deal out the punishment.

"He will pay with his life" he said placing a comforting hand on his son's shoulder. Koga cracked his knuckles "I'll enjoy ripping his limbs off"

"Sesshomaru!" Serena cried out for him. He returned to her in a flash. She arched her back in pain and gasped out in agony.

"I'm right here little star"

She was getting worse. What Miroku and Kagome were doing wasn't working fast enough. He was going to lose her. Her breathing became shallow and slower. Sango and Ayame clung to each feeling completely hopeless. They had sent out a company-wide voicemail stating a shut down due to an emergency and ensured all the doors were locked when they returned they could only stand by and watch. Their sister and friend was dying before their eyes.

Serena could feel their energy trying to help her but only the crystal could save her. The crystal. Her eyes snapped out in realization. 'That's it' she thought 'if I can get enough energy, I can call the crystal.'

"I need…" she started

Sesshomaru leaned over her staring deep into her eyes. He would not deny her anything right now.

"What? Anything"

"Promise me" she took a deep breath grimacing "won't leave?"

He looked down at her confused

'What? Why would she ask that?' he thought.

"Never"

She smiled weakly, taking a deep breath. She tilted her head to try and look at Kagome and Miroku, she would need every bit they could give.

"I need energy" she breathed out "as much as you can"

Sesshomaru looked to Kagome and Miroku who were as confused as him. They nodded, changing their chant. Serena felt a surge of energy flow into her, she had to do this quick.

'I thought I could keep this secret to protect them but I can't. Not any more' she thought.

Serena took a deep breath feeling a surge of strength.

She motioned for him to help her stand "help me". Sesshomaru lifted her on her feet supporting her whole body weight, he wrapped one arm around her waist and clasped her hand with the other. She leaned against him.

"Silver crystal" she whispered "please help me"

A shimmering gold crescent upturned moon appeared on her forehead. Her whole body glowed encapsulating her in a bright white light. The room filled with a feeling of warmth and love. Everyone let out a collective gasp. Sesshomaru felt her body step away from his, he was too shocked to try to pull her back.

'So she isn't human' he thought. The light faded and she was dressed in a pure white A-line gown, it hugged her body nicely. The top had a sweetheart neckline with gold stitch detailing and white cap sleeves. The bodice shimmered clinging to her curves down to her hips, the skirt flowed down to the floor, covering her bare feet. The fabric shifted like stars were woven into the fabric, her hair seemed to float slightly from the power being emitted from her. Serena held her hands in front of her chest, between floated a round crystal that pulsed with a power none had felt before. Sesshomaru couldn't keep his eyes off her.

"Beautiful" he whispered.

"Silver crystal, hear my plea" she said, her voiced laced with authority "do your duty and protect your Queen"

"Queen?" Sango whispered

Immediately, the crystal pulsed a few times filling the room with a bright warm light. Everyone felt a warmth encircle them filled with nothing but love then it quickly disappeared and the crystal receded within her chest. Suddenly the light and her gown disappeared causing Serena to collapse unconscious backwards. Sesshomaru leaped forward catching her in his arms. The colour to her skin returned and her breathing evened out.

Kagome and Miroku stopped chanting, their energy completely spent. Sesshomaru swooped Serena's body up in his arms, he sat back on the couch cradling her close to him. Checking her side, he was shocked to see the stab wound and infection were gone. His fingers brushed against her now unblemished skin. 'Like it was never there' he thought pulling her close. Serena was unconscious breathing deeply. Inuyasha and Sango had rushed to their mates holding them close as their strength slowly returned. Sesshomaru turned to them, gratitude written all over his face.

"I owe you everything" he said to the pair. Kagome reached out placing her hand on his arm.

"She is family" Kagome replied and Miroku nodded.

"What the hell was that?!" exclaimed Ayame standing between Koga and Toga.

The room was silent. 'Could she be?' thought Toga 'no they were all killed. I would have known if her daughter was alive.' His brow furrowed, a million thoughts running through his head.

Sesshomaru looked down at his love thanking the kami she was still alive. She looked so peaceful in his arms, like she was just napping and not had nearly died. His fingers brushed the gold crescent moon on her forehead. 'It didn't disappear' a tiny smile appeared on his lips 'it's perfect.'

"Uhh" she groaned, her face scrunching up. His hand cradled her face as she opened her eyes slowly to see a pair of gold eyes staring back, filled with love and concern. Serena sighed in relief, he was still there.

"You didn't leave…" she said leaning into his touch.

"Never" he said pressing his lips to her crescent moon. He let out a shaky breath he didn't realize he was holding. He almost broke at the thought of losing her, he would never leave her side again. He pressed his lips against hers not caring if his family saw, he needed it to make sure she was there and the nightmare was over. She brushed her fingers over his cheek as her way of saying that she was okay and she wasn't going anywhere. They broke apart staring at each other for a few moments. She then looked to Miroku and Kagome with tears streaming down her face.

"Thank you" she said softly "the poison spread so fast and took my energy before I had time to call the crystal"

Sesshomaru tightened his hold on her. She turned to him "I'm sorry if I worried you"

He pressed his forehead against hers

"Don't scare me like that again little star"

He drank in her scent searching for any sign of sickness or death. There was none. Toga cleared his throat

"I think it's time we all talked"

Serena looked to him and nodded. That was not a suggestion but an alpha issuing an order. She nodded. It was time they knew everything.
