Chapter Twelve: The Truth

He shifted his car into drive and peeled out of the garage. Serena fell asleep almost immediately with Sesshomaru holding tightly to her hand. He glanced over every few minutes to make sure she was still there and breathing. The Taisho manor was a forty-minute drive from the office so it gave her plenty of time to rest and recharge. He couldn't help but smile, the morning was exhausting and almost devastating but she was safe and loved him as he loved her. Sesshomaru pulled into the driveway parking in his spot and saw everyone already home. They liked being the middle of nowhere, better for privacy and letting their beasts out when they felt the need. He took a deep breath, taking a minute to memorize her sleeping form. Her golden hair shone in the sunlight, he gently brushed a stray piece behind her ear. Serena smiled and sighed happily, even in her sleep she enjoyed his touch.

Sesshomaru leaned over nuzzling her neck "wake up love" he whispered. She let out a small yawn and opened her captivating blue eyes, he could stare into them all day. They seemed to sparkle when she smiled at him, almost like they sparkled only for him. Sesshomaru took a deep breath in of her scent, once again checking for any scent of death. The memory of her naturally intoxicating smell mixed with the scent of death was ingrained in his brain. He jogged to her side and lifted her into his arms. She opened her mouth to argue, he silenced her with a kiss.

"Will you stop being so stubborn and let care for you?" he growled

Serena sighed and let herself relax in his arms. Luna had reminded her time and again that once she was gone then Serena would be left on her own. She should only ever count on one to care for her and protect her and that was herself. Luna had been tough but Serena knew she was right. To stop only relying on herself was going to be a hard habit to break.

"I'm not used to having someone take care of me"

He pushed his nose into her hair breathing in her scent.

"Well get used to it my little star. You are not leaving my side until I hunt down this vermin and kill him" Sesshomaru said carrying her up the driveway.

Serena's eyes widen in terror

"Sesshomaru no!" she argued gripping his shoulder "he is incredibly powerful. He could kill you"

He scoffed "I'm daiyokai"

She rolled her eyes "I understand that but he is…" she sighed trying to find the right words "let's go inside and I'll tell you everything"

"Hn"

Serena knew this discussion was not over but maybe when Sesshomaru knew everything then he would know how dangerous this situation was. Izayoi was on them the moment they stepped inside fussing over her. She checked where she was stabbed, shocked there was not even a mark. Izayoi cradled her face examining the crescent moon on her forehead.

"I was so worried when Toga called!" she said trying not to cry.

"She is alright now ma" Inuyasha said hugging her pulling her away from Serena. They needed to attempt to keep some distance between themselves and Serena, Sesshomaru had nearly lost control that morning so his beast was still raw and demanded retribution for the attack on his future mate. They didn't want to push things too quickly lest he lash out in an attempt to protect her. Sesshomaru had great control over his beast and his actions but even daiyokai sometimes found themselves at the mercy of their baser instincts.

"It was amazing!" exclaimed Koga "she was all glowing and heal me I'm your Queen"

"Queen?" asked Izayoi

Serena knew this was going to be a long conversation.

"Can we sit?" she asked

They piled into the living room, Sesshomaru taking extra care to make her comfortable. He settled in behind her with her sitting between his legs and his arms wrapped around her. He wanted her as close as possible. Izayoi handed her a bowl of soup, the broth was filled with herbs that would restore strength and energy quickly. Serena at first attempted to refuse it, not wanting to be a burden. Sesshomaru was having of it, grabbing it from her hand and practically forcing her. He was pleased when she allowed him to feed her without complaint.

When she finished enough that he was satisfied, he handed the bowl back to Izayoi with a nod of thanks. Serena pulled up her legs leaning back against Sesshomaru's chest into his embrace feeling stronger already. She turned to Kagome and Miroku with nothing but a look of gratitude written all over her face.

"First thank you Kagome and Miroku. Without your help, I don't know what would have happened"

Kagome reached out and grasped her hand briefly.

"You weren't getting rid of us that easy" Miroku nodded in agreement placing his hand on her knee. He quickly removed it when Sesshomaru growled lightly at him. Serena placed her hand on his cheek rubbing her thumb along his jaw. She knew how hard he was keeping it together.

"What happened?" asked Sango

Serena shook her head "Mr. Moors or Ozais was not who he seemed. He was sent to poison me which would force me to use the crystal thus revealing myself. I don't know if he meant to use that much but his plan succeeded either way."

"Then who was he?" Inuyasha asked leaning forward placing his elbows on his knees and resting his chin on his hands.

"He is from the planetarium Kingdom of Saturn. Working under their ruthless leader…Sion" she shuddered "He won't be pleased that Ozais almost killed me, he wants that pleasure for himself."

Sesshomaru let out a carnal growl at the bastard's name. She turned and ran her nose along his jaw, Inu demons are very physically affectionate. They rely on touch to convey many intentions or messages to their mates. She was giving him the message that she was not leaving his embrace anytime soon. Toga's eyes widen as he realized he was right earlier.

"You are a moonchild aren't you?"

She nodded

"But I heard you were all…" he swallowed hard remembering the day vividly. The images were something that haunted him for years.

"Slaughtered?" Serena answered sadly "yes all but me"

Toga stood turning his back to the group. Breathing heavily, he felt an intense wave of guilt and self-hatred come over him. 'No she couldn't be her daughter' he thought. The demons in the room looked at him confused why did he feel such guilt? Sango raised her hand confused.

"What's a moonchild?"

Serena smiled and took a deep breath.

"Let me start at the beginning. I am Princess Serena of the silver crystal Moon Kingdom. Only daughter to Queen Serenity and King Matis, heir to the throne and protector of the silver crystal" she turned to Koga "did you get my brooch?"

Toga clenched his hands digging his claws into the palm of his hands. She was her daughter and he had no idea that she had survived. 'I should have looked harder' he thought 'I'm sorry my friend.'

Koga nodded handing her a small gold and white brooch. She set it on the table passing her hand above it, she commanded "Moon crystal display"

A breathtaking white palace appeared. The moon kingdom existed in a dome that produced the climate for the citizens to live in. The grounds surrounding the palace were covered with large bodies of water in the front and an immense garden in the back. They could see the stars twinkling above casting an ethereal glow over the kingdom.

"Wow! That is gorgeous" exclaimed Izayoi

Serena smiled softly reaching out to touch it.

"That's home" she breathed out "my family has ruled the planetarium kingdoms for generations, we lived in peace. Our people prospered and the kingdoms thrived." She passed her hand across the image as it switched to one of the crystal they saw earlier. "This is the silver crystal. When the world began, there was a war between light and dark. Light prevailed over darkness but to keep it that way the stars created the silver crystal. The balance of light and dark was placed within it. Without the crystal, worlds would be covered in an unnatural darkness. It feels like the world goes cold and all the joy is sucked from you"

Miroku nodded understanding "your family was tasked with its protection"

"Yes" she added "we are the sole guardians. Our royal lunar blood is pure, we are the light. The firstborn daughter to the Queen becomes the next guardian. When the Queen dies, it passes automatically to the next in line. It doesn't just reside within us, it is part of our soul, interconnected" she interlaced her fingers together "woven together"

"But you are the only one left?" inquired Sango looking confused.

Serena nodded

"Yes"

"You are immortal then" stated Sesshomaru

"Yes, I stopped ageing when I turned 24 and time no longer affects me" Sesshomaru hugged her close, time would not take her from him and he would never have to suffer the pain of losing her to old age. She was a lot more extraordinary than he originally knew.

"That's why your identity didn't exist until a year ago" Kagome said finally understanding.

Serena's face fell. She thought the person she hired to create her last identity had done a first-rate job at covering her tracks and manufacturing a history for her. Clearly not.

"Apparently I need a new guy" she sighed "every ten years, I have to start over. People get suspicious when you don't age like everyone else does"

Kagome suddenly looked sad "how long have you been doing that?"

"Fifty years" she answered. Kagome gasped covering her mouth with her hand.

Sango looked chest fallen and grasped onto Miroku's hand "You've been doing this all by yourself for that long?"

She could not imagine being without Miroku or her family for that long. Always having to run, never get attached to anyone, never fall in love or feel like you were home. That must have been so lonely.

'She has been alone for fifty years' thought Sesshomaru looking at her face 'never again'. He cupped her face tilting towards him, he placed a soft kiss on her lips.

"You will never have to run again" he whispered against her velvety lips.

A growl ripped through the room, shaking the windows. Toga pulled his arm back and punch a large hole in the wall, the stone cracking under his fist. Nine pairs of eyes snapped to the Alpha.

Izayoi jumped to her feet surprised "Toga!"

"Father" Sesshomaru warned shielding Serena

Toga turned, his eyes red. His fangs and claws elongated.

"I heard about that night. When that vermin murdered….no slaughtered everyone! Men, women and children. He killed them all. I saw the images from your home, the bodies piled at the front gates. The burned buildings, your mother" his voice trembled for a moment and he paused "your father. I thought no one survived but now to find out you've been here, alone this whole time!" He turned to Sesshomaru "It was just after your mother died, you weren't dealing with it well so I didn't investigate like I would have….I should have realized you survived and found you"

Serena realized he blamed himself "Toga…"

He fell to his knees in front of her, bowing his head. "I failed"

The group was shocked, their pack leader, lord and alpha was submitting to the tiny woman in Sesshomaru's arms. Serena slowly removed Sesshomaru's arms casting him a look that said she needed to do this. She slid to her knees in front of him and wrapped her tiny arms around his large frame. Toga's arms automatically folded around her and he buried his face into the top of her head. She looked like a child in his arms. His claws retracted immediately, not wanting to harm her.

"Please don't put blame on yourself! We had been cut off from Earth for decades. No one could have saved us, we were lost before we knew the threat was coming" she exclaimed before pulling back to look in his eyes, she smiled sadly "I was not completely alone, my mother had her trusted advisor living here. In case it wasn't safe to keep me there. Luna healed my wounds and trained me. I had a few years with her before she passed. Sion is the one to blame. He killed my family, my people and burned my kingdom"

Toga nodded pulling her back in to hug her, how had he not seen it beforehand? She looked so much like her mother. He refused to let down his friend again, he would bound himself to her. "I swear on my blood. I will protect you and kill this man. That is my bond to you" he stated firmly.

Sesshomaru and Inuyasha's eyes widen in shock, they had never heard of their father making that type of bond before. He was Inu no Taisho, people bounding themselves to him offering to serve him. But an Alpha's bond was made, it could not be broken. They were never made lightly. Izayoi kneeled next to them "we are your family now too"

Serena smiled feeling herself pulled back into Sesshomaru's arms as he kissed her head. She had been away from him for too long and his body craved her close again. Toga let his mate push him back into a chair, settling beside him gripping his hand. Something was upsetting him. Miroku looked contemplative. "What is it Miroku?" asked Sango placing her hand on her husband's arm

"Hm?" glancing at Sango "nothing. Just, Serena you mentioned your kingdom being cut off from Earth how?"

Serena looked to Miroku

"My grandmother did that. She became nervous about the advancement of the human race, she didn't trust them. She was concerned if they discovered the silver crystal they may have tried to take it and exploit it."

They nodded their heads in agreement, someone would have saw the potential power and been greedy.

"Why does this Sion fucker want it?" Koga inquired from his spot, Ayame sitting between his legs. His face showing the disgust for Sion's actions.

"Power and greed" she started waving in front of the brooch again to show Sion.

Sion was tall with long dark purple hair. His face was pale and sneering with purple eyes that held hate. He pulsed with unnatural dark power.

Sesshomaru felt Serena shrink back into his embrace, after all this time there was still a part of her that feared Sion. Sesshomaru hated that she felt any fear or sadness let alone the fact that she had had to deal with it alone for as long as she had. Once Sion was taken care of, he would ensure her life with him was filled with nothing but love and joy.

"He was obsessed with me. Kept asking Mother and Father to let him marry me but they said no knowing I had a soul match" she gripped Sesshomaru's hand "he was not pleased, now I realize he just wanted the crystal" She shuddered "I remember him coming to council meetings, watching me and studying my every move."

Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes memorizing every detail of the man so if he saw him, he could drive his claws through him for trying to touch what is his. Kagome shuddered at the sight of the man, no wonder she was frightened of him he was creepy.

"He is the Prince of Saturn" Serena continued staring at Sion, it had years since she saw him and he still caused her to shrink back "a dark planet that has hated the alliance with the moon, they didn't feel we should be the only ones "in control" of the crystal. They complained about it every council meeting. He seeks to control the crystal thus control the galaxy by covering it in darkness"

She passed over the brooch again, showing Saturn. A planet covered in swirling darkness, battles constantly raged for power. Its people filled with anger and hate simply because of the unnatural dark energy flowing through the very core of the planet. A tall tower stood in the middle of the city flowing with dark energy.

Ayame threw her hands up and angrily said "Wait wait hold up, is this that bastard who gave you that scar?!"

They all turned to face Serena as she scowled at the wolf demon. "Scar?" questioned Sesshomaru tilting his head to look at Serena who bit her lip furrowing her brows in annoyance. "What scar?" he questioned, he hadn't seen a scar on her in the office. Her long blonde hair had covered it from sight anytime her back was bare but now there was no hiding it.

'Gee thanks Ayame' she sighed smacking her forehead. She had hoped to not have to show them that, Sesshomaru would not be happy. She looked to Kagome for some help who just shrugged and shook her head

"You might as well show them now," said Kagome turning to Sesshomaru "do not lose control"

Serena stood audibly sighing, turned around and took off her sweater using it to cover her chest. Yes she was wearing a bra but she didn't feel comfortable standing like that while conscious. She gathered her thick blond hair in her hand and pulled it to the side showing the long deep scar on her back. A chorus of cursing and gasps were heard, Sesshomaru ran his finger down the scar. Serena shivered in response. He felt his beast surge forward but pushed him back, he already lost control once today. 'He marked her skin' his beast growled 'I will rip his throat from his body'

"I'm not going to just kill that man. I'm going to torture him until he begs for death"

Sesshomaru looked to his father who nodded in agreement. Toga sat silently staring at the scar, he saw the blood spilt in the throne room. Knowing that a portion of that had come from her body made it difficult for him to maintain control. Sensing her mate's distress Izayoi rubbed the back of his neck to calm him.

"That fucker did that?" growled Inuyasha gripping Kagome's waist. He would lose it if someone had hurt Kagome like that, he could only imagine how hard it was for his brother to keep control. He cast a glance at Sesshomaru growling low signalling his aid and comfort. Sesshomaru flickered his eyes to him briefly and nodded in gratitude.

Sesshomaru's gaze returned to Serena's face. Her face betraying how hard this was for her, to relive these memories. He could see the tears welling in her eyes thinking back to that night. He placed a hand on her cheek tilting her face towards his, having her look him in the eyes. They held all the words he didn't say. How much he loved her, how badly he wanted to avenge her and the comfort he wanted to give her at this moment.

"It looks like he tried to slice through you" added Koga narrowing his eyes.

Serena put her sweater back on "he did, Luna was able to heal me but I was laid up for months with infections." She settled back into Sesshomaru's arms, she knew he needed her close to keep his beast calm.

Koga growled deep "what kind of monster does that?" clenching his fist.

"He is dark and filled with unnatural dark energy. He is a dangerous man who likes nothing more than to toy and torture people until they break. It is his favourite game" Serena hissed "only then does he take what he wants and kills them. Father tried to for years to get them banned but it has to be a unanimous vote, including Saturn." She recalled how frustrated her father was, they refused to detach but did nothing but critique her mother and how she ruled.

"Why couldn't you use your crystal to heal you? Like you did earlier" inquired Kagome

Serena shook her head "I couldn't. Using the crystal takes energy and since we are interconnected…"

"It takes it from you" Kagome filled in

Serena nodded "yes, anytime I use the silver crystal for something I have to sacrifice my energy. Plus Luna wouldn't have allowed me, it would have shown where Pluto sent me"

"What happens if you use too much energy?" Kagome asked, her eyes filled with worry as she knew the answer. Serena paused. She began rubbing circles on Sesshomaru's hands to keep him calm, she knew this would upset him.

"If I use too much energy and the crystal shatters, I die" Kagome reached out placing a hand on her knee in sympathy "my soul goes to the stars and I rejoin my parents."

Sesshomaru held her close, an image of her laying lifeless and her eyes void of life crossed his mind. He would never allow that to happen. He felt her hand instinctual go around the back of his neck, her fingers rubbing his neck. She just knew when he needed her comfort or to keep him calm. Serena was his true mate.

"What would happen though, without that crystal?" Inuyasha asked, tightening his arms around Kagome. Using that much of her reiki had taken a lot out of her. But he could never imagine her using it so much that she could die.

Serena shrugged "I don't know, I didn't get that far in my education before…before Mother was killed."

Miroku leaned forward and asked softly "can you take us through that night?"

"Miroku" chastised Izayoi "that is asking too much"

"We need to be prepared for what is coming" he argued back

Serena nodded in agreement "He's right Izayoi, you need to know all the risks that come with me. I bring danger to this family. However, it is easier for me to just show you"

She stood up removing Sesshomaru's hands and walked to the middle of the room.

"Come stand around me and hold hands" Serena was glad the children with Kaede and guarded in another wing. She didn't want them to hear all this. The group stood around her in a circle and linked hands. She could feel Sesshomaru's eyes watch her every move prepared to stop this if she looked shaky for a minute. She closed her eyes holding her hands out in front of her and called forward the crystal, teetering for a moment

"Little star" warned Sesshomaru taking a half step forward.

"I'm alright. My strength is just coming back that's all" she reassured him

She glowed, appearing in the white gown, her hair floating slightly. Izayoi gasped. 'How did she get even more breathtaking than the last time' Sesshomaru thought. Inuyasha leaned over and whispered in his mother's ear "Fucking cool isn't it?"

Serena pulled her hands out straight in front of her, the crystal never leaving its place between her palms. Raising her arms straight above her head, she commanded the crystal.

"Silver crystal, take us back to the night the kingdom fell"

There was a bright flash that blindly everyone and when it cleared, they found themselves standing in front of the silver moon palace. She was back.
