Chapter Eighteen: Sunday Morning

Serena woke late Sunday morning to someone kissing her neck. At first she thought she was having a lovely dream until she opened her eyes to a silver-haired demon on top of her, his hands exploring her body. Rin whispered to Serena about her dreams from the night before, how she had wings like an angel and they all lived in mama's moon castle. Serena laughed lightly kissing Rin on the forehead praising her for having such a rich imagination. Serena's parenting style balanced Sesshomaru's nicely, providing love, stability, discipline and play for their daughter.

The couple made their way down for brunch as the whole family had slept way later then they meant to. The last few days had been emotionally and mentally draining on everyone. Toga stood looking concerned, he worried for her all night. Serena handed Rin to Sesshomaru and immediately went to his arms hugging him, he held her close. Toga cradled her frame letting his large hand graze across the back of her hair. He whispered "my little girl" so quietly only she could make out the words. It made her happy, somehow she felt her father would be pleased that she had another fatherly figure in her life.

"I know you have a father but you are my daughter now too" Toga said hoping he wasn't stepping on any toes "I would think your father being the great man you told me about would approve"

"He would" kissing his cheek "Dad" she whispered. Toga hugged her tightly, the bond they created was special just as it was with all his girls. This one was different considering her mother and what she meant to Toga. Serena would have been his little girl had things been different.

"What did you tell me about your father?" inquired Koga being nosy

"That is between a dad and his daughter" countered Toga looking to Serena who chuckled lightly squeezing his waist. Toga released her reluctantly back to Sesshomaru's waiting arms. He had already put Rin in her chair placing her breakfast in front of her, his daughter always woke up hungry and ready for breakfast.

"Can you tell us about your parents?" Ayame asked as she settled in beside Sesshomaru, he squeezed her hand. "You want to know about them?" she answered. They all nodded, they wanted to know who she came from and what she loved about them.

"I know when my dad died, it helped me to talk about him. Made it easier not having him for the big moments" Kagome piped up.

Serena nodded "well my father was Marsarian, they are known for being passionate and stubborn" she chuckled smacking Sesshomaru's arm when he scoffed sipping on his coffee " Father was both, he said he fell in love with Mother the moment he laid eyes on her then spent all his time trying to win her over which only took one try. She loved him desperately.

"How did he end up winning her over?" Ayame asked, a dreamy look in her eyes. They all recalled how the royal couple looked at each other like life began and ended with one another.

"It was the middle of the night and she heard something outside her window, when she went to it she saw my Father. He had covered the entire lawn in thousands of candles that were lit, he said that for every flame she saw that represented a year he would love her. She told him that there must be thousands of candles lit, he replied then I guess I better start loving you as soon as possible"

"Wow that is romance," said Kagome look wistful.

Serena smiled and continued "He eventually replaced all those candles with the flowers you all saw and reminded Mother every time they walked through that he would love her for over a thousand years than would relight them so he could do it all over again," she said looking sombre for a moment then smiling "Mother always said that when you find the one who changes the way your heart beats, dance with them to that rhythm for as long as the song lasts. I think they are still dancing"

All the women sighed wistfully.

"Their love story is legendary across the kingdoms. Grandmother wanted her to marry someone else, but he said no wanting her to follow who she loved" Izayoi looked to Toga who was concentrated on the words coming from Serena "Mother told me he was her best friend as a child and she loved him a lot but not the way he loved her. If he weren't so selfless, Mother wouldn't have married my Father. They would have been incomplete."

Inuyasha looked thoughtful "who was this person?"

"No idea, Mother never told me. She would get sad when I asked saying how much she missed him and their time together. I think he died"

Toga frowned. She missed him, their friendship as much as he missed her. Izayoi squeezed his hand offering comfort and understanding. He leaned over and kissed her cheek nuzzling her face. That woman would never understand how much he did not deserve her. He stared into Izayoi's eyes having a silent conversation where he thanked her for being so understanding and reiterated how much he loved and adored her.

"What was your mama like mama?" a tiny voice piped up. Serena looked down at Rin who stared back at her. She kissed her head lovingly.

"Oh my mama was beautiful, kind and warm. She had this ability to make you feel like you could anything, our people adored her. When I was a little girl, she would take me through the town meeting all our people. She helped them where she could" She continued "this one time, she tried helping a man move some large bags of flour and ended up dumping it all over herself"

Everyone laughed trying to picture the regal Queen they saw standing covered in flour looking shocked. Toga chuckled, he could only picture Serenity looking flustered trying to dust off the flour. Serena laughed as tears dripped from her eyes. She felt Rin crawl into her lap, wiping her face

"Why are you sad mama?" asked Rin touching Serena's face.

Serena shook her head hugging her "I miss my mama my sweet girl but I'm happy too"

"Why?" she asked looking confused

Serena held her close kissing the top of her head "because it was nice to talk about them. Plus now I understand why she always said she loved me most because I love you most." She pinched Rin's little nose before resting her head against hers.

"Come let's eat some food, I'm starving" said Inuyasha. Serena placed Rin back in her chair.

"When are you not Inu?" she teased, he growled back playfully.

They sat eating devouring the waffles, fruit and bacon that Izayoi prepared, Sesshomaru's hand never leaving her thigh. He looked at his intended as she cut Rin's waffles laughing at a joke Koga had said. He never felt luckier then he did at this moment. He still couldn't believe she was his. Squeezing her thigh, he captured her lips in a kiss when she turned to him. When he pulled away, Serena dragged her nose across his jawline before placing a kiss on his neck.

"What shall we do today?" asked Izayoi like they were any other normal family on a weekend.

Serena cleared her throat "actually I had hoped to use the dojo this morning. If Sion is coming, I need to be prepared. It has been a while since I trained properly"

"Good idea, we should get ready to kick his ass" Inuyasha growled cracking his knuckles

Serena looked shocked, they didn't think she would let them get into harm's way.

"No Inuyasha, you all will not be fighting him" she shook her head "I will not allow you to put yourselves in this fight"

"You won't face him alone" Sesshomaru stated sipping his coffee. Serena looked at him annoyed.

"I appreciate that but this is my war, not yours" her eyes narrowing feeling her frustration growing

"It is!" he growled "I will not have you face an entire army potentially alone"

She sighed frustrated "Sesshomaru, it is my duty as Queen"

She couldn't ask him or his family to put their lives on the line for a fight that wasn't theirs. They didn't ask for this to be dropped at their doorstep, she refused to let them be tangled in her problem. She wouldn't watch them die.

"Are we not your family?" turning to her anger written all over his face. That was not the point, she had already watched one family die, she could not ask another to sacrifice themselves for her.

Serena slammed her hands on the table and stood so quickly her chair fell on the floor with a clatter.

"Then don't ask me to watch another family die!" she yelled stalking out of the house towards the dojo, fuming.

They watched her with wide eyes, you could smell the outrage and pain roll off her in waves.

"That woman frustrates me" Sesshomaru grumbled picking up her chair. 'Our mate is unhappy with us' his beast growled 'she is disobeying us, we are her Alpha.' Sesshomaru growled inwardly commanding his beast to shut up and sit down. Now was not the time.

Toga nodded "I wouldn't expect anything else from your mate son. You aren't exactly always calm, cool and collected yourself"

"She probably carries a lot of guilt" Sango added "when my dad died, I did. I blamed myself because he was coming to pick me up when the accident happened. Now take that and multiply it by an entire family, friends and people"

Sesshomaru sighed, great he was being an asshole again. He should have calmly discussed it with her and understand why she felt the way she did. She had this way of bringing out the beast in him, she just wouldn't let herself be loved and protected why?

"Daddy, who is mama talking about?" asked Rin tugging on his sleeve

He looked down at her 'of all the times for her to be paying attention'

Kagome quickly jumped in to help him out

"He was a very bad man who hurt your Mama a lot" she explained

Rin looked thoughtful for a minute munching on a waffle. Her little face scrunched up in concentration.

"Is he coming because mama saved me?"

"What do you mean Rin?" Sesshomaru asked leaning over Serena's empty chair looking closely at his daughter. Everyone looked confused, unsure of what she was talking about. They all searched their memories to when she could have been hurt but nothing came up. Rin looked nervous, looking to Shippo who just nodded urging her to confess.

"When Rin almost died. Mama saved me."
