Chapter Twenty-two: Protect Them

Serena woke to the sound of the shower running, stretching she smirked a glint appearing in his eye. Their bathroom was large with a double vanity with a large soaker tub. It also had the most magnificent shower that could easily hold eight people. There were two overhead rain showerheads and the walls had multiple jets lining it. The bathroom had a serene feel to it with the colours and tiles chosen, creating a spa-like experience. Serena walked into the bathroom and stripped off her nightclothes. She watched him biting her lip and enjoying the view of Sesshomaru standing naked under the shower. The water streaming down his chiselled chest and toned arms. "Where are your errands today?" he asked as he gathered some documents for his meeting. Serena sat on their bed brushing her long hair.

She sighed "I have to go to the venue, flowers and check on the thank you gifts" she replied "If I have time I'd like to check out some bands for entertainment. Though I am beginning to feel more like an event planner than an educator. I can't wait until I can get back into the classroom."

Sesshomaru chuckled having heard this complaint many times over the last couple of weeks. He knew where her heart lay and it was in education.

"Are you bringing security?"

She shook her head tossing her hairbrush back on her vanity "I hadn't planned on it"

Sesshomaru stopped getting ready and turned to look at her "Why?" he questioned

"It's just errands, Sesshomaru. I'm a big girl. I've been doing this for a long time love" answered Serena walking to their bedroom door "I'll go wake Rin while you finish getting ready"

Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes at her retreating form. "Then I'll just cancel my meetings and come with you" he stated very nonchalantly.

His statement stopped her in her tracks, Serena whirled around placing her hands on her hips.

"I'm sorry, what?" she exclaimed. 'Did he really just say let me? like I am something to be owned?' she thought, ready to give him a piece of her mind.

Sesshomaru shrugged "I'm not letting you go traipsing around the city without anyone else there to help protect you." He picked up his phone intending to call the office to cancel "so I'll just call in and cancel."

Serena stalked over ripping the phone from his hands. Her lips pursed in anger, a fire in her eyes that Sesshomaru knew all too well. It read that she was not happy with him and was more than happy to let him know why.

"First of all, let me?" she practically growled out "and second of all, you cannot cancel. You said how important this meeting is plus you spent all that time preparing for it."

Gingerly he removed his phone from her hand, placing it on his briefcase. Sesshomaru put his hands on her shoulders, staring down at her.

"I watched you laying on the couch dying. You were deathly pale and your breathing was so low that not even I could hear you. You may have recovered from that but I have not. So yes let you because it is hard enough every time you leave my sight" he rephrased his earlier statement and bringing her hands up to his lips "therefore I'm asking you; for my sanity, to bring someone" he kissed each of her fingers, his eyes pleading with her. "It can be anyone. I know how strong and powerful you are, do this for me?"

Serena searched his eyes that were desperate for her cooperation and internally groaned. He knew exactly how to break down her will. She understood how difficult that day had been for him. He had barely let her out of his sight since then. Many times he would randomly pull her flush against him and take in a deep breath of her scent. She knew he was searching for any trace of illness. Kagome said she had never seen Sesshomaru afraid before but there was fear in his eyes that day.

"Find" she relented "I'll bring Koga okay?"

Sesshomaru smiled pleased that he had gotten his way "perfect, I'll send a quick text"

"You are lucky I love you Mr. Taisho" she teased walking out to wake Rin

"Why's that Miss Luna?" he called after her, watching her perfect ass in those jeans.

"Cause you are a pain in the ass!" she yelled back

He chuckled shaking his head. Kami that woman was going to be the death of him.

Sesshomaru walked into the kitchen to grab some coffee before leaving for his meeting. Izayoi looked up from her tea. He was surprised that she was the only one home considering how early it was in the morning. Pouring himself a cup, he joined Izayoi at the table.

"Ah there you are" Izayoi smiled "your father left already with Inuyasha and Miroku for the office"

He nodded looking around "and the rest?"

"Kagome, Ayame and Sango went to drop Shippo off at his friend's house" she paused "Unfortunately I have some things that require my attention immediately. I cannot take the children with me and Kaede is ill"

Sesshomaru could tell that she felt bad about the situation but she didn't need to. He nodded sipping at his coffee

"Do not feel bad. I shall call father and cancel"

Izayoi looked sympathetic "I'm sorry"

He waved her off "no need to apologize, I'll just reschedule to another day"

"Reschedule what?" a voice piped up

Serena walked in carrying Rin who was snuggled in her arms. She was awake and dressed in under ten minutes, how did she do it? No one had been able to accomplish that, not even Toga.

"Izayoi has some matters to attend to so no one can watch over Rin" he replied leaning down to kiss her on the head.

"Good morning Baby" he whispered against her hair

"Good morning Daddy" she mumbled letting out a small yawn

Serena put her down at the table, filling a small bowl with some fruit. She put in front of her with a glass of juice before pouring herself a cup of coffee. The woman lived on the stuff, how she didn't bounce off the walls he didn't know. It was not uncommon for her to have four or five cups a day with the occasional run to Starbucks in the afternoon.

"Why reschedule? I'll just take her with me, I will shorten my day to just the venue and flowers. Then afterwards we'll go to the park" she smiled down at Rin smoothing down her hair before looking back at Sesshomaru "if that's okay…"

Sesshomaru pulled her close to him. "You never need to ask to take our daughter anywhere my love" he kissed her cheek, letting his lips linger on her soft skin "she is your daughter and you are her mother, you do as you please. You never need to look to me for permission in that"

Serena smiled and sighed in relief. Sometimes she questioned how much of a mother she could be with Rin, she never wanted to step on Sesshomaru's toes. He had done such an amazing job raising her as a single father. She was happy to hear that he trusted her judgement as a mother.

Sesshomaru's phone pinged and he glanced at it quickly "Koga should be down in a minute" he said.

She nodded sitting beside Rin as she ate.

"Yes, Sesshomaru wants someone with me so I'm taking Koga" Serena filled Izayoi who looked confused for a moment. She rubbed the back of his hand under the table "he is a little nervous"

He scoffed in response "this one does not get nervous. Just precautious"

Izayoi nodded understanding and stood to gather her belongings

"That will make your Father happy. And he is right darling, we have to be more cautious now. Our family would be incomplete without you"

Izayoi hugged Rin and Serena before placing her hand on Sesshomaru's shoulder "have a good day Rin. Grandmama will see you later"

"Bye Grandmama," Rin tugged on Serena's sleeve "mama when are we leaving?"

Serena looked down at her "as soon as Uncle Koga gets down here" she said

They ate their breakfast as Sesshomaru watched Serena interact with Rin. She slipped into the role of mother so seamlessly. She cared for her, offering praise and love unconditionally but also knew when to put her foot down and discipline. There were many times that Rin did something that made him think that she was Serena's biological daughter. From day one, Rin never questioned who Serena was to her. She was her mother and that the end of that. Sesshomaru always thought that Rin knew before him that they would end up together.

"Rin finish your fruit or we won't stop for ice cream" she gently chided giving Rin a motherly look.

"Yes mama" Rin replied digging into her mixed fruit bowl.

"Don't worry bug, Uncle Koga will still get you some" Koga started walking in.

"Koga…" Serena warned narrowing her eyes at him.

"What?" widening his eyes throwing up his hands, pretending to look innocent "I didn't do anything"

She cocked her eyebrow at him. 'uh-huh that man would buy the world for her' she thought.

"Terrible influence" she mumbled sipping on her coffee

Sesshomaru looked at his watch and stood up

"I'm heading in" tilting Serena's head capturing her lips in a kiss "I love you"

She smiled "as I love you." Her smile alone brightened up his day.

He kissed Rin on the head reminding her to listen to her mother and not her Uncle Koga. He motioned for Koga to follow him.

"Hey! I'm a good uncle"

Sesshomaru rolled his eyes picking up his briefcase "you spoil her too much" he stated as they stood in the front hall.

Koga smirked and shrugged "that's my job"

Sesshomaru paused taking a deep breath

"Koga…guard them" his face growing serious "that's my whole world in there. Protect my girls" he stated firmly

Koga nodded curtly, his face growing sombre. He was Sesshomaru's best friend but he knew that even with Koga he was hesitant to leave them. Especially with everything else going on.

"I won't let you down Sesshomaru" he swore, offering his arm "I won't let anything happen to either of them. You have my word"

Sesshomaru clasped his arm with his own, appreciating the gesture that Koga offered. He was offering his arm to him as a demonstration that he would protect them as if they were his intended and pup. Sesshomaru took one last glance towards the laughter of his intended and daughter. He hesitated for a moment and then left. She was everything. Rin was everything. He trusted Koga immensely which showed as he left his most precious belongings in his hands. He arrived at the office settling into his work, wishing the day was already over. Even now he was slightly regretting not going with them himself, he trusted Serena to keep Rin safe. But if something happened, he knew she would sacrifice herself before letting anyone else get hurt even strangers. That was the part that he didn't like to think about.

After an hour of answering emails, he texted Serena telling her he loved her and to keep him updated. She sent him a picture of the three of them in the car smiling.

"Yes sir" she replied

Sesshomaru shook his head, he swore he was corrupting her. He tossed his phone on his desk turning his attention back to the meeting that was on the books today. It was important, it had the potential to be big business for them.

Toga walked in knocking simultaneously "morning son"

"Why do you bother knocking if you don't wait to be let in?" rolling his eyes at his father.

Toga shrugged his shoulders settling in the chair in front of him "it's my building" he paused for a moment "though I am surprised you are here. With Izayoi being busy today, I thought you'd be home with Rin"

Leaning back, Sesshomaru replied "I was going to but Serena took her with her on errands for that benefit you insisted on"

Toga looked shocked "you let her go with Rin?"

Sesshomaru felt his anger rise. Serena was her mother, he didn't trust anyone more with Rin than her.

"Yes, why wouldn't I?" he bit out "Rin is her daughter and I trust her implicitly"

"No, you misunderstand" Toga started shaking his head "I am referring to security that's all. I trust her as well but with that; you can't even call him a man out there, I want her to be protected." His overprotective nature was showing. He got that way with all his girls, they may not be his biologically but they were his girls and he was Alpha. Toga would always protect his girls.

Sesshomaru took a deep breath, calming his anger.

"That's why Koga is not here. He has been tasked with their protection. I want to triple the guard at the house and with the children. One of us needs to be with her at all times" commanded Sesshomaru. Even though his father was Alpha, when it came to his family he stepped into that role. Toga was pleased to see how easy it was for him to become Alpha, maybe he could finally retire.

Toga was in complete agreement. Until they dealt with the situation, they would all need to take the proper measures to ensure everyone's safety. Serena was powerful and could defend herself if needed but both men did not want that risk. She was precious both men and deserved to have a happy life. They shifted their discussion to some upcoming projects including an extension to the hospital wing. They went over the documents for the meeting they had today which was centred on Taisho taking over a smaller company. They had reached the cap of what they could do on their own. Taisho could take them to a whole new level resulting in huge profits for both sides.

"Hey pops," Inuyasha said strolling into Sesshomaru's office, "The client says they have landed" plopping down in a seat.

"Does no one knock anymore?" Sesshomaru grumbled. Why did he have a door if no one would bother to use it properly?

"Thank you son" Toga replied

Inuyasha turned to Sesshomaru smirking "where did you leave your runt?"

Sesshomaru resisted the urge to throttle his brother with his hands. He knew he was only doing it to get a rise out of him. It was working, that ridiculous half breed always knew which buttons to press.

"Watch your tongue" Sesshomaru growled "She is with her mother and Koga"

"Ahh that's why he isn't here and we all thought he slept in again" Inuyasha smirked, he was relieved Serena wasn't alone. He had moved himself into Kagome's office as a precautionary measure.

Toga barked out a laugh.

Sesshomaru dragged his claw along his desk. There was something he wanted to bring up but he wasn't sure how to do it. So he went with blunt and to the point.

"Now that I have you both here, I wish to discuss something with you" he cleared his throat again "I am going to propose to Serena after the benefit and take her as my mate"

Inuyasha let out a small cheer "hell yea!"

Toga smiled "I was wondering how much longer you'd take"

Toga could not be happier, she was the one for him. Serena had this ability to open people's hearts up and she had done this with Sesshomaru. He was a changed man, the man Toga knew he was meant to be. His mother's death had changed him in some way and now he was finally beginning to act like the son he knew. She was the missing piece of their family.

Sesshomaru waved them off "I still need to get a ring and plan without her realizing what I am doing. Which is where you two come in. I will need assistance though I do not want this to leave the room" he stated staring pointedly at Inuyasha. He had a problem with keeping secrets, especially from Kagome. That's why he was the last to know about Sesshomaru adopting Rin.

"Too late!" shrieked Kagome bursting into the room and running over to pull him into a hug. She had been listening at the door when she heard the words propose. Kagome had had a feeling this was coming since the day they first met.

"Get. Off. Me" Sesshomaru grumbled

Kagome laughed squeezing him tighter. She was so pleased this day had finally come, Serena was the perfect addition to their family. Serena just seemed to fill that space that was always empty in their family, providing a type of love and light that no one was able to.

Pulling away Kagome smiled softly "I'm really happy you found her big brother, she is your other half"

Sesshomaru nodded in agreement. If Kagome hadn't insisted that they hire her, he wouldn't have met her and who knows what would have happened to her or where she would be right now. The thought that if things had been different, she would still be alone out in the world and not beside him was not a pleasant thought.

"So…" she began going to sit on Inuyasha's lap "have you thought of what ring you want?"

Sesshomaru nodded pulling up a rendering that he had meticulously detailed to a designer. The moment he realized Serena was the one, the design practically jumped out to him. The ring had an 18 karat white gold band with small diamonds encrusted on it, in the centre sat a 5 karat teardrop diamond surrounded in a halo of moonstones. Engraved within the band were to be two crescent moons side by side.

The trio leaned in to get a better look and was not disappointed. Sesshomaru never did anything halfway. So it was not surprising that when it came to his proposal he would make her ring from scratch, in his mind nothing from a store would be good enough to grace her finger. It would need to be one of a kind.

"Wow" Kagome gasped "That is magnificent Sesshomaru. She will love it"

Inuyasha nodded in agreement "Yea, you outdid yourself on this one"

Sesshomaru felt proud, he had spent many hours describing the exact details he wanted to see to an artist who made his vision come to life. He had sent many designs back with small changes. He cared not for the price, the ring that would grace his mate's finger would be perfection.

"We'll see it done son" Toga added "leave me with the design and I'll give it to our jeweller. It is will be perfect"

Toga would ensure that no expense was spared, he did the same with Inuyasha when he proposed to Kagome. He smiled to himself thinking of how happy Serenity would have been to see her daughter getting married and being happy. They talked about the future when they were younger. She always said when she had children, she would let her children pick based on their hearts and not what would benefit the kingdom. He just hoped she would be pleased with where her daughter's heart led her.

"Thank you Father" Sesshomaru nodded curtly "I want a ring worthy of her hand"

The receptionist buzzed interrupting their conversation, stating that their client had arrived and was headed up to the conference room. Kagome jumped up and clapped her hands

"Okay, you guys go slay that meeting and I'll brainstorm some ideas then we can regroup and come up with your proposal" she stated seeming very pleased with herself. They headed towards the conference room when a thought struck Sesshomaru.

"Kagome" he started.

She paused and turned back to him "yes?"

He looked thoughtful for a moment "make sure it is reminiscent of her home that is important"

Kagome smiled and nodded "I got you"

Honestly, Sesshomaru was grateful for the help. He never pictured himself as the type to mate or marry. But here he was anxious for the day to arrive, there was nothing more he wanted then Serena to be sporting his mark and carrying his last name. It was something that gave him great happiness and always brought a smile to his face. Never in all his long years did he think he would be the domestic type. He glanced at his phone once more reading a text from Serena that said they were at the venue but turning his phone to vibrate and entered the conference room. Things could not get any better at the moment.

The meeting was progressing nicely. The clients were open to all their proposed changes and plans for expansion. They were impressed by the detail put into the expansion and pleased that they had no plans of making any big staffing changes. Many times with takeovers, companies would lay off staff and bring in their own. Taisho Corp. never liked to conduct business that way, why train their staff in the ways of their company when they already had loyal employees? The negotiations had been going on for a few hours and were down to the last small details when Kagome burst into the boardroom. Terror rolled off her in waves. The trio jumped to their feet with Inuyasha flying to her side. In an instant, Sesshomaru knew something was wrong. He checked his phone, he hadn't heard from Serena or Koga in hours. That was unlike her.

Toga ushered the clients out claiming a family emergency. He had this gut feeling that something had happened. He told his assistant to make sure they had a night out on them with no expense spared for the interruption. They were more than understanding having mates and pups themselves. Family came before business.

Inuyasha held Kagome by the shoulders as she cried "Kags what's wrong?"

She looked at Inuyasha before her glance went straight to Sesshomaru's face. That's when he knew. Something had happened to his girls.

"There's been an explosion…"
