Hawkmoth grinned as his latest akumatized villain handed him the Ladybug and Cat miraculous. They had done it, him and Mayura. Nathalie? He didn't know, but he knew he needed her and couldn't have done it without her. In a moment of joy, he picked her and spun her around. It looked like a moment straight out of a movie. Setting her down on the ground, Hawkmoth leaned in and kissed the woman who had been by his side through it all.
"Dark wings fall," he mumbled as their kiss broke.
"Fall my feathers," she repeated after him.
They were close and Gabriel's arms were still wrapped about Nathalie's waist.
"I-" Nathalie didn't know what to say.
Part of her felt like she should apologize, but for what. She didn't kiss him, well she did, but he kissed her first. She wasn't necessarily sorry that she kissed him either. It wasn't like she regretted kissing him.
"I'm sorry," Gabriel finally said, though his arms didn't let her go, "I was caught up in the moment."
Nathalie held her typical cold and neutral expression through her heart cracking, "so was I. It's okay. We have the miraculous now, you can make your wish and everything can be as it was before."
Gabriel nodded, "can you come down there with me?"
Nathalie was a little surprised by the question but nodded, she might as well be with him to the end, she had stuck with him this long.
Only then did his arms, which had held her close being they were wrapped around her waist, leave. Nathalie didn't like it as the warmth of his touch left her body, but she knew, she never should have gotten used to it to begin with.
Standing there, Gabriel didn't know if he could make the wish anymore.
Standing there, Nathalie tried to remind herself that Gabriel would be happier like this.
Standing there, rolling the miraculous over in his hand, Gabriel couldn't even put the jewelry on.
Standing there, Nathalie looked at Gabriel confused because he looked as though he was unsure how to put on a pair of earrings.
Nathalie took a step closer to Gabriel and gently touched his hand which held the two miraculous. His gaze shifted up as he looked and Nathalie. She looked up at him and she had never seen him look so conflicted.
"Do you want me to make the wish?" Nathalie asked.
Gabriel looked at his wife's confinement and then back at Nathalie, "no," he decided.
Nathalie was curious, "did you forget how to put on a ring and a pair of earrings then?"
"No, I-" Gabriel was struggling. Kissing Mayura felt like the worst thing he could have done, he had been close to victory, and then he was unfaithful.
"Then I don't see the problem," Nathalie interrupted his thoughts, "you have the perfect opportunity right in front of you. I wouldn't wait."
Gabriel nodded, he supposed Nathalie was right, and she didn't seem hung up on the fact that they had kissed as their alter egos only moments ago.
He quickly put on the jewels and unified their kwamis. A wish, he just had to wish for his wife back and everything would be fine. It would go back to the way it was, the way it should have been.
"I wish my wife, Emilie Agreste, was alive and well," he stated. It was a clear-cut wish that ensured that Emilie would be fine once out of her confinement.
Nathalie let out a groan as he made the wish. She was overcome with a stabbing pain in her side, a terrible headache, and she became very dizzy. Nathalie fell to the ground but Gabriel didn't even notice the light thump she made as she collapsed.
Opening her casket-like confinement, Gabriel gave a smile to his brilliant wife. Emilie slowly stepped out and almost fell, it had been a while since she moved. Gabriel quickly caught her and Emilie let herself be supported by her husband.
"What happened?" she asked weakly, her voice clearly hoarse, "where are we?"
"Follow me, you need water," Gabriel told her, "you're probably hungry too."
Emilie brought a hand up to her throat, it was dry. She felt like had been asleep for years with how stiff she felt as well. She started coughing a little bit, the darn peacock miraculous. Wait? That was it, she started to remember. She had used the peacock miraculous and the last thing she could remember was... fainting? Yes, she had a horrendous headache and had been coughing all day. She remembered feeling dizzy before everything went blank.
"The peacock miraculous!" Emilie gasped, "what happened to it?"
Gabriel paused from rolling his eyes. Nothing had changed, the stubborn woman was going to do whatever she wanted. He glanced over to the owner of the peacock miraculous only to see her lying on the ground.
"Nathalie!" he called and ran over to her fallen body.
Emilie stumbled and fell into a kneeling position as she watched her husband lift the head of his assistant.
"Nathalie!" he called again but her eyes would not open no matter how much he called her name. Checking for a pulse, he realized that Nathalie wasn't there. Her body was cold and limp. Her face had gone pale and her body was lifeless. What was he supposed to do now?
"It took her life in exchange for mine?" Emilie guessed weakly.
Gabriel turned his head in shock, he had forgotten about his wife. Ignoring her question, Gabriel moved Nathalie's body to Emilie's previous coffin-like container. He couldn't wish for her back, it would take Emilie from him again and he couldn't risk that, not when they had fought so hard just to get Emilie back.
"I'm sorry Nath," Gabriel mumbled. He wouldn't cry, he had his wife back, he should be happy, yet here he was secretly mourning the loss of his assistant.
In the dining room, Gabriel let his head fall onto the hand that was propped on the table. He felt exhausted but blamed it on the wish.
"It's okay if you love her Gabriel," Emilie said.
"No, Emilie, I only ever loved you," Gabriel immediately objected.
Emilie rolled her eyes, her husband hadn't changed at all and she still knew him better than he knew himself.
She was right, Emilie Agreste always had a way of being right, and once again she was. His lips still tingled from the sensation of kissing Mayura and part of him wondered if kissing Nathalie would taste the same. He shouldn't have been thinking like this, his wife was in front of him, he could kiss her all he wanted, yet he couldn't bring himself to do it.
"It's late," Emilie finally said, "and I think it's been a long day for you. Let's just go to bed, we can talk more in the morning."
Gabriel nodded, a lot had happened in one day.
"Gabriel, whose shirt is this in your bed?" Emilie asked, picking up a black nightshirt.
Gabriel's eyes widened, he couldn't even remember the last time he had slept in the bed that was technically his. He had let Nathalie stay in his bed for work and just didn't move her at night, he had stayed in a guest room. While Nathalie had objected to the whole idea at first, Gabriel insisted that the arrangement was fine.
"It's Nathalie's, isn't it?" Emilie assumed when her husband didn't answer.
"It isn't what it looks like. I just let her work from bed. She got dizzy spells often."
"You let her work from OUR bed."
Gabriel opened his mouth to say something, but he couldn't deny it. It looked bad, it looked like they did a lot more than just kiss while Emilie was in her coma. There he was thinking about their kiss again, why couldn't he get it out of his head? Her blue skin that had a purple blush when they pulled away. He brought a hand to his mouth wishing to feel the soft touch of her hand against his lips instead. Somehow nothing was about Emilie anymore.
He panicked as he woke up the next morning. He only had 5 minutes before his first meeting.
He went and banged on the guest room door, "Nathalie! Why didn't you wake me? I have a meeting in less than five minutes!" he yelled as he quickly finished putting on his jacket.
"Nathalie! What are you doing?" He tried again when the door didn't open.
That's when he remembered, his assistant wasn't here, he would have to find a new one. Nobody was as capable as Nathalie was though. He remembered times before Nathalie, when he was growing through 5 plus assistants a month, he couldn't do that again. A very important fashion show was coming up and there was no room for error, Nathalie always made sure of that too. Gabriel shook his head, he would focus on it later, right now he had to get to his meeting, thankfully it was virtual.
After his meeting, Emilie walked into his office.
Without looking up Gabriel said, "about time Nathalie, get me a cup of coffee."
"Gabriel," Emilie signed, "she's still gone."
Gabriel looked up and blinked at his wife, of course, Nathalie was gone. He would have to tell HR to get him a new PA, he was already going mad without one. Nobody could replace her though? They wouldn't quickly catch on to his typical coffee order or what times of the day he liked tea. They wouldn't know he only drank green tea when he was stressed and chamomile before bed. Nathalie always picked up on those things and within the first week, she knew it better than he did himself sometimes.
"It's okay, I know you miss her," Emilie told her husband, putting a hand on his shoulder.
Gabriel sets his hand on top of hers and looks up to smile at his wife. When he looks up, he doesn't see her honey blonde hair and he doesn't see green eyes looking back at him either. He blinks a few and the blue eyes turn green and the midnight blue with a streak of red turns blonde and everything is as it should be.
"I love you Em," he doesn't know if he is reminding her or if he is reminding himself but he knows that he loves her. Doesn't he? It's never been a question before. He had been thinking about Nathalie all-day and now even as he said I love you to his wife.
"But you love her," Emilie says, knowing she never should have been brought back.
"What are you talking about? No, I might miss her but I love her."
Emilie raised her eyebrows and Gabriel realized what he said.
"That's not-" Gabriel tried. He didn't mean it, he couldn't love Nathalie. Regardless of how unprofessional their relationship got, she was just his assistant.
"I know what you meant, Gabriel," Emilie cut him off, "give me the miraculous, I'll fix it."
"No, Emilie, I made a mistake, I tripped on my words, I-"
"Gabriel, you love her, and that's okay, I wasn't supposed to come back. You moved on like you should have."
"I-" Gabriel tried again.
"Just tell me where the miraculous are," Emilie said, not letting Gabriel speak.
Gabriel didn't even try to speak as he walked over to a locked drawer. He pulled out the silverish ring and earrings that were a maroon color. His hand shook a little bit as he handed the jewelry to his wife.
"Let's go see her," she said.
It felt different seeing Nathalie in a coma compared to Emilie. Seeing Nathalie tugged at his heart, he felt bad for the woman that had suffered a fate she never deserved. He wouldn't have said Emilie had deserved that fate either but maybe it was true when they said everything happens for a reason because somehow the world still felt right when Emilie was in a coma.
Gabriel had been so focused on Nathalie he didn't realize when she put on the two miraculous and unified their kwami's. Her voice snapped his trance away.
"I wish that my husband always had and always will love me and only me," she spit selfishly.
"No!" Gabriel gasped, he lunged towards Emilie but it was too late and the wish was made.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gabriel woke up with a major headache. He shielded his eyes with his arm feelings blinded by the bright light.
"Oh, honey, you're awake," a sweet voice called to him.
He blinked a few times, "Emilie?"
"You had such a terrible fall, I was so worried about you," Emilie cooed sitting next to her husband on the bed.
Gabriel hummed, he couldn't seem to remember a thing, it must have been a symptom of his concussion.
Gabriel's life was perfect. The Agreste family was perfect, the three of them, Gabriel, Emilie, and Adrien, lived happily.
The biggest problem was now Gabriel was visited by a blue angel in his sleep. She had blue skin with even darker hair and her eyes were a brilliant shade of pink. Often she wore a long dress that had a slit to her mid-thigh. She was an undeniable beauty, far from anything his wife looked like, but it was stupid, he couldn't be in love with a dream. Though sometimes his dream angel took a different form. A beautiful woman dressed in navy and red, her outfit resembled her hair which was midnight blue beside for the single strip of red. She seemed so familiar and so in reach, yet he could never place a name to the face of the woman who was always there.
In one of his best dreams, the beautiful blue lady kissed him. It felt so real, like it happened in real life. He couldn't tell Emilie, so he never did. He lived a peaceful life though it always felt like something was missing. He could never explain how a dream could make a man feel whole so he remained silent. He loved his life, his wife, and his son but some part of him loved his blue girl and the kiss that they shared.
"Nathalie!" he shouted, jolting himself from bed.
Looking beside him, he only saw his wife, but all he could think about was Nathalie, or rather Mayura, and their victory kiss.
