Olivia gently fed Trevor a forkful of food "Does this happen often?" she spoke, motioning to his arms which were shaking so bad that he could not even hold his fork.
He swallowed the food she fed him before speaking up, "it happens sometimes, when I do too much, my arms give out."
"What happened to you? How did you end up in the chair" she asked gently.
He let out a sigh, closing his eyes as he thought back to that day where his entire life was turned upside down. He had a meeting at his law firm and he was running late, his then girlfriend had already left for work and his car had broken down. So he went outside in the pouring rain to hail a cab, he got a cab and halfway through their drive he realised that his driver wasn't looking too good.
The cab driver had a heart attack and the car swerved out of control, smashing straight into another car. Trevor could not remember much of what happened, apart from the pain he felt in his left thigh. He tried to move out of the car but he could not get away, then he passed out. He woke up in a hospital room four days later, and found that he could not move his legs, or anything beneath his chest. It was then that they informed him that he was paralysed, he suffered a severe blow to the thoracic part of his spine.
"So because of that crash I am paralysed from my chest down" he explained, a scoff leaving his lips "my driver died on the spot and his wife and kids came to visit me in the hospital. I felt so fucking guilty because if I hadn't demanded that cab, that man may have still been alive. I would not have been in this damn chair."
She gave his hand a small squeeze "Trevor you cannot do that, you can't blame yourself. What happened was an accident, a horrible one, but it definitely was not your fault."
He swallowed the lump that arose in his throat "That's easier said than done."
She gently wiped the corner of his mouth with a napkin and gave him a warm smile "On the bright side, atleast you are still alive. You can still do so much"
He sighed "how? I can't even take a piss on my own! Let alone get into bed"
He looked up at her and pursed his lips "This is not living, I would have been better off if I died in that crash, because right now, all I am is a liability to those around me. I'm a man that cannot even pour his own damn glass of water because my arms are getting weaker with every passing day."
She reached up and wiped the tear that rolled down his cheek "I know it must be so hard, but I'm here for you, Alex is here for you... You are not a liability Trevor"
"I should take those pills now" he said, bringing their conversation to an abrupt end.
She nodded, knowing that he reached his limit for the day. She was pleasantly surprised that he opened up to her and told her about everything "thank you, for opening up to me"
He gave her a small smile "thank you for listening"
She took the pills he needed to take and handed them to him, she then held his glass of water while he drank it. Once he finished she cleared up the kitchen and made her way over to him "do you wanna go outside for a bit?"
"Sure" he answered.
His chair moved beside her as she opened up the doorway to his huge backyard. She walked beside the electric chair and took a deep breath, enjoying the few minutes of fresh air. She gave him a small smile as she looked at the well kept garden and the green grass that was beautifully spread across the grounds. His backyard looked like something out of a movie and even had a beautiful pond on the far end.
She sat down on the bench opposite the pound and raised her eyebrow at him "Do you come out her much?"
"No I don't" he gently shook his head "I haven't been out here in forever, in fact the last time I was here was a few weeks before the accident."
She took hold of his hand again and ran her thumb over his knuckles "it's really beautiful out here, you should come out more often. Fresh air is good for you and will help you relax"
He chuckled softly "you seem to know a lot about what's good for me, have you been doing your research on paraplegics?"
"No, I just know that everybody could use a few minutes of free time to destress. I learnt that the hard way a few years ago"
"What happened?" he asked, finding himself curious to know more about the gorgeous brunette that sat beside him.
She let out a heavy breath "I had a nervous breakdown and got really sick because I was overworked, stressed out and I was mourning the death of my boyfriend."
"I'm so sorry" he said, genuinely sorry for making her bring it up "when did he pass?"
"A little over three years ago." she said, she gave him a small smile "I found out that I was pregnant a month after his death, so it was pretty hard for me. I'm much better now though, I mean I'll always miss him but I know that it was his time."
"And the baby?"
A massive smile spread on her lips as she reached for her phone "this is my son, Noah Carter Benson"
He looked at the picture of the little boy and smiled "he looks exactly like you, he's cute."
She chuckled "he's naughty... But I love him so much."
"His father would have been proud" Trevor gave a supportive smile.
She nodded "that's true, Carter would have spoilt him rotten."
He nodded gently "well atleast you have a son as a little reminder of Carter."
"Yeah I guess you're right... Do you have any kids?" she asked while leading him further into the massive garden.
He swallowed the lump in his throat "no I don't. I almost had a kid, my ex girlfriend was two months pregnant at the time of the accident. When she found out that I am paralysed she had an abortion and broke up with me."
Olivia gasped softly "I'm so sorry, that must have been horrible."
He scoffed "That's life Olivia. It's cruel and full of shitty surprises, and I got all of my surprises after each other."
She leaned down, kneeling infront of him "there's still hope that things could get better if you just keep pushing."
He took hold of her hand, squeezing it weakly "Well soon I'll be out of my misery so I guess you're right. There is hope."
She furrowed her eyebrows "What do you mean out of your misery?"
He sighed "That's a story for another day."
She nodded, knowing not to push him, so instead she started talking about the various flowers in the gorgeous garden. They spent a good hour just strolling through the massive backyard, talking and laughing as they did. Olivia felt so comfortable around him now, it was as if all the tension between them had melted away and now all that was left was laughter.
They made their way back into the house after a while, both of them still laughing at a story of something Noah had done a few weeks ago. Olivia stopped in the kitchen and got him a glass of juice "come on drink something, we've been outside for a while you have to be thirsty."
He laughed softly at her tone "you are such a mother, I feel like I'll get grounded if I disobey you."
She let out a hearty laugh "hah you like being indoors, so your punishment would be going out"
"No thank you, I've had enough sunlight for today." he chuckled before taking the juice she offered him, he gave her a charming smile "thank you Olivia. Today has been wonderful, I don't think I have laughed this much since... Well before the accident."
She shot him a wink, getting a glass of juice for herself as well "there's no need to thank me, this has been fun for me too."
He smirked "not many people would agree with you on that bit."
"Well maybe that's because not many people see the Trevor I got to see today." she pursed her lips "we should hang out sometime, plus you still owe me dinner since you stood me up this morning."
"I'll check my schedule and let you know when I'm available to take you up on that offer" he teased.
Olivia let out a laugh "you're full of shit."
"That's okay, you're still here so maybe my shit is working" he pipped up.
"This looks cozy" Alex said as she walked into the kitchen with a smirk "what are we talking about?"
Olivia smirked over at Trevor "some top secret business."
Alex chuckled "Trevor she didn't get you in trouble or anything like that right?"
"We went running naked down the street, but other than that we have been on our best behaviour" he quipped up, enticing a laugh from Olivia.
Alex shook her head "oh so we're being sarcastic to the nurse now, I get it. Keep your secrets."
Olivia stood to her feet "that's the plan darling. Now I have to get going because I've still got a case to solve." she gave Trevor a small smile "I had a great time today. See you around."
He smirked "so did I, see you soon Olivia."
Olivia gave Alex a hug before gathering her things and returning to the precinct with a massive smile plastered on her face.
