Chapter 1

Darcy

"IF YOU STEP ONE MORE FOOT ONTO OUR LAND WE WILL BLOW YOUR HEAD OFF!"

Miss Elizabeth Bennet directed this statement towards me while holding back a fireball cocked and ready for my head.

Her emerald green eyes laid into mine with an intense stare, emblazoned from the fire balanced on her palm and the fire of her anger within.

It was in this moment, that I knew I could never love someone as strongly as I loved this woman!

But before I have lost myself too far deep into those thoughts. I should explain how my two best friends and I ended up in a Mage battle with the Bennet sisters.

Because I am Fitzwilliam Darcy, The Master of Pemberly. I was trained by not only the best Wizards in the country but was raised by two of the most powerful Mages of their time. I have multiple gifts, and I am very powerful in most of them because of my extensive training. Because of one of my specific gifts I am often called upon by the Capitol to help with special matters. I am one of the few Mage's gifted as a Mind Reader. Most Mages are able to communicate Telepathically. But Mind Readers are a rare gift. Mine is even more rare in the way I don't need to be near the person I am focusing on to read their mind. I can be on the other side of the country, but when I focus on that person- I immediately can read them. I have never heard of another who has this particular skill. Because of so I am in high demand.

I have heard of those with the gift that are unable to control it, as soon as they are in a room with another person they are filled with their thoughts. I am beyond relief that this is not my gift. Which to me would be more like a curse.

Hearing the matrons of the Ton droll on and on about my fortune and how they might "Compromise me" would be the worst kind of torture.

When I am called up to the Capitol I am often paired working with my two best friends. Charles Bingley and my cousin Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam, who is more like a brother then anything else.

Charles and I went to school together, he is lighthearted, jovial and falls head over heels in love with every woman he meets. He is multi-gifted, though not as trained as I. But his most powerful gift is in Emotion Manipulation. He has the ability to manipulate the emotions or feelings of others around him. Because of this and his hate of conflict, you can often find him using his gift to lighten the mood when heated discussions arise.

My cousin Richard Fitzwilliam, who I like to call Fitz, is a Colonel in the army. He is multi-gifted, but excels in Enhanced Combat gifts. Such as speed, strength and martial arts to the extreme variant of each. He is the ultimate fighter and I have never seen him lose a fight.

All together we are a perfect team. I find the person in question and figure out where they will strike next. Charles changes their anger to happiness. Richard bounds them. Then we bring the almost-felon to the Capitol. Most of the time it's all done with ease. That's why we are called upon to help more often then not.

Though sometimes like now it is not easy at all.

We were told the Bennet sisters had multiple gifts that were not common and very useful to the Capitol. But their father had installed in them a major distrust in the Capitol. For reasons no one is aware of.

This past Wednesday both of their parents mysteriously died at different times of the day. No one saw either happen and no visible causes have been seen. To make things worse their estate has been entailed away to a cousin who any day will come and remove them from their home.

The Capitol is offering them housing and very good pay if they all come work for the Capitol. But because of their deep seeded mistrust in the Capitol, so far they have been unable to convince the Bennet sisters to join the team.

That's where we come in…

Like normal when we are given our next assignment we go over the files we were given in my study at Darcy house. The three of us started looking at each registered file on the Bennet sisters.

At the age of 13 each person is registered at the Capitol. By that time most gifts have become known to each Mage and can be added to their file.

It became very clear as we glanced over each sisters registered file that they do not match the most recent papers on top of the file. Our handler told us they had been tipped off that Mr. Bennet had misinformed his daughters registered files, only registering one or two of their basic gifts. Because of this the Capitol has placed people in Hertfordshire throughout the years to get a more accurate account of each daughter.

"Can you imagine, all this power in one house?" Charles exhaled with a low whistle while glancing between a few different sisters files.

"I can only imagine what it would be like when they were cross with each other." I can't help but add my thought and glanced at fitz with my eyebrows raised.

He smiled with a knowing grin and nodded q back at me "Well if they were anything like us as kids, it's a miracle they all survived past their governesses. But my question is are they really this beautiful? Clearly these sketches must be off." He looked at each miniature that had been clipped to each file. Yearly you are required to sit for a basic drawing so your file will be kept up to date.

Charles leaned in and nodded with a huge boyish smile on his face in agreement. He seemed to be favoring the eldest sister, Miss Jane Bennet. Which is no surprise there. She is a classic beauty from what we can tell from the sketches.

I can't help but be relieved that Fitz seemed to be continually glancing at the youngest Miss Lydia Bennet's file. Who is only 16 but something in her has sparked his attention, my guess is her Guardian gifts.

I am relieved since from the second I glanced down at the second eldest Miss Elizabeth Bennet's drawing I feel I have been bewitched. It's like while she was being sketched she put a spell on the paper that anyone who would look at it would fall madly in love with her. Obviously she did not do that, but I can't seem to fathom how a drawing has caused me to struggle breathing and this overwhelming need to know her.

There also is the knowledge the handler informed us that they seemed to believe Miss Elizabeth is the most powerful Mage of all the sisters. Even as far as stating she might be just as powerful as myself. Which is definitely intriguing.

"Well Darce, you going to start digging around or just stare at her drawing."

I glared daggers at Fitz.

He leaned back in his seat and put his hands up, in saying he will leave me alone. I then noticed him picking up Miss Lydia's file once again. I could make a comment right back, but it is time to see what we can figure out.

I leaned back in my large leather chair, closed my eyes and focused on Miss Elizabeth Bennet.

Immediately I see a red aura. Can feel the pain radiating through her.

Papa! Papa! What are we going to do? You always said not to trust the Cap- EXCUSE ME! WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING? I ASK THAT YOU STOP READING MY MIND IMMEDIATELY!

You know?!?!?! I am completely taken back in shock.

She lets out a loud laugh

Oh, you thought you were the only one that could read minds from a distance? That's sweet. Sorry to wound your pride sir. But in truth I am asking you politely to stay out of my head. If you try again without my permission- you will be sorry. Good day sir.

"Uh Darcy, all ok my good man?" Charles said in concern.

I can't help but shake my head, trying to snap out of my confusion.

"She knew I was reading her mind."

Both men look over at me in shock.

"Has that ever happened before?"

"Did she say something to you?"

Both Fitz and Charles speak at the same time.

"I have never heard of this happening before and yes, she most definitely spoke to me. She forcefully told me to stop reading her mind. Then she heard my confusion and started laughing. Saying something about my wounded pride not being the only distance mind reader."

I see them both making faces at each other and know they are talking to each other telepathically. I can't help but listen in.

Finally he has met his match!

Could this be the only woman in the country to call out the great Fitzwilliam Darcy???

At this point my eyes are fixed on the ceiling.

"Well I just will have to try with one of her sisters then."

I noticed them both unknowingly lean in. Even though they would not be able to hear anything. I decided to go with Miss Katherine, as she seemed to be the sister with the least known gifts. The most non-threatening of them all.

I leaned back in my chair closed my eyes and focused.

DID I NOT MAKE MYSELF CLEAR LAST TIME? YOU WILL NOT INVADE ME OR MY FAMILIES MINDS! This is an extended warning because apparently you are slow in the head.

How?… How are you able to respond from your sisters mind?

Another loud laugh.

Now I am the one confused, I thought that to be a quite common spell. I was not aware that you were so dim witted.

Around me the ground began to shake and I could almost feel the steam coming out of my ears. There were no thoughts other then pure anger.

Well since all I can see is anger crashing out of your aura and not hearing any rebuttal. I will take this time to tell you once again- if you pry into my or my sisters minds again, you will no longer have any of that small brain of yours left after I am done with you. And with that, again I say good day sir.

I couldn't contain my anger anymore without hurting someone so I immediately went outside in need to hit something. When living in the Capitol there was not a lot of room to get my frustrations out. Not like at Pemberly. But I did have a small courtyard off the back. I had a boulder brought in for moments just as this. I shot fireballs, a slash of wind that sliced through one side and ended with a bolt of lightening that split the whole boulder in half. I sat down on the bench to the side staring at the now two smaller boulders.

I soon realized Charles had sat down on the bench beside me and Fitz was close to the boulders admiring my damage.

"So you want to tell us about it?" Charles said while clearly trying to lessen my anger. He was never very successful with me, especially when it came to my anger.

"You might as well just tell us Darce. We will have to know eventually."

Fitz was right. Even if I didn't share with him her full sentiments, he would somehow find out later. Fitz always did.

"Miss Elizabeth has guarded her sisters minds as well."

"What?!?! I was not aware you could do something like that?"

They both looked as astonished as I was.

"Apparently. And when she realized I was not aware of it she called me… dim witted." I ended up growling out the last word through clenched teeth.

Immediately both Fitz and Charles tried hard not to erupt with laughter.

"Wow. I might be changing my thoughts. She might just be the most amazing woman I have ever met or I guess heard of." Fitz said with a sly smile.

I continued to glare at him.

"Well it looks like we will just have to go and try to convince them." Charles stated plainly.

I nodded my head. Knowing that was most likely are only option at this point.

"Ok, I say we rest up and head out at first light." Fitz looked at both of us as he made his declaration.

We all agreed and went to our separate rooms to pack our things.

Who does this woman think she is? Ok she is beautiful and talented. But she is a country nobody and I am the Master of Pemberley!

As my frustration started to ease away and I laid in bed. Replaying both of our conversations, there was still part of me that wanted to read her mind once again just so I could hear her. Which is completely twisted! Why on earth do I want to get another tongue lashing from her?

It was even more frustrating when I dreamt of her bewitching eyes that night.

We decided to ride in the carriage to give us more time to gather a plan of action. We talked through every scenario possible and how we would react. We went over all the gifts we knew of and how we would counteract if said gifts were used on us.

Before we even took two steps away from the carriage we were attacked.
