Book I – The Third

7. A different kind

"Look at me kid!" Said a man's voice. "Come on… open your eyes, breathe slowly and look at me."

I didn't know how much time had passed since I had started shaking in the presence of Bella Cullen. I had lost perspective of the world around me when I realized I had no control over my body anymore. I could feel the skin and muscles moving up and down, trying to stretch and my insides burning like fire.

Then the voice of the man who was near me reached my ears again. He was closer this time.

"Come on kid. You're not going to phase in here, are you?"

I'm not a damn kid! I wanted to shout but my voice failed me at the exact moment I felt myself sinking into the floor. My eyes were still shut, probably because I was trying to convince myself that this was just a bad dream.

If it's a bad dream why do I feel so much pain?

At some point I must have tried to get up but my legs were trembling so badly that I fell again. This time someone put a cold hand on my shoulder.

Not cold, dead. This is the hand of a dead person. I thought and felt sicker than before. It was obvious that Bella had called her family. Alone, Bella wasn't a threat to me besides she had mentioned that she looked up to my family as her own family. My mother and my Uncle Seth were her step siblings after all. She would not hurt me intentionally. But what about the others?

They had all seemed nice people once.

Only they're not people, and everyone can fake being nice.

Alice was joyful, eccentric and had the most unusual taste in fashion. She was petite and slim but didn't look weak at all. Her husband Jasper was melancholic and strange but he did seem always alert.

The same applied to Emmett and Rosalie. Only they were a lot more easy-going than the others. Emmett was always joking around and making bets. Rosalie was the epitome of female perfection although she wasn't the most sociable woman on Earth.

Esme was glamourous and gentle while Carlisle was helpful and diligent. None of them seemed like psychotic killers but I was playing with fire by entering their lands and house without permission. Plus I knew their secret and I could tell everyone about it. Was that a chance they were willing to take?

They've always been nice and they claimed they're our friends but that doesn't mean they'll spare me now that I know the truth. I thought.

"I think he's going to phase anytime now."

"I know."

"You were supposed to calm him down Jasper." Said Bella. "He can end up destroying the whole house. Remember when Will phased three years ago?"

"I do." Jasper whispered. "But honestly I'm not worried about the damage Isaac can do to our house, Bella. I'm more concerned about how he'll react as soon as he phases."

Phase into what? A damn werewolf? A giant wolf? Or something else?

I should be the one worried about them. There were eight experienced vampires in the family while I was alone in that house. I had no one to help me.

Panic stroked me and I felt like suffocating. I began to hyperventilate. I couldn't feel anything but the tremors.

"It's not working." I forced myself to open my eyes and I recognized Jasper Hale, kneeling down in front of me. "You better call Jacob."

"His cell phone is turned off."

"Try Leah." Jasper suggested. "We might not be ready for this."

While Bella was talking on the phone with my mother I heard more footsteps coming up the stairs.

More vampires. The obnoxious scent was so intense I thought I was going to throw up.

"Isaac! Look at me!" Jasper ordered, shaking me by the shoulders. I obliged but almost immediately I regretted it. He smelled horribly and his eyes were certainly not human. Like his twin sister Rosalie, Jasper was supposed to have blue eyes, but today they were yellow.

I should have seen it sooner. Everything about them is weird. How could they have me fooled for so many years?

"Do you think he's a shield?" Bella asked after hanging up.

"If he's one, he's even more powerful than you. I can use my powers you on, but he's blocking them somehow." Jasper explained.

At that point I had no idea what the hell they were talking about and honestly I didn't care.

"He's blocking mine too. I can't see what he's thinking." A new voice had entered the conversation and I recognized Edward immediately. He smiled at me when he noticed I was staring at him.

"He's scared." Jasper said. "That much I can tell."

"We're not going to hurt you, Isaac. You're parents are on the way. Just hang on a little bit more, alright?"

Closing my eyes again I tried to focus on something else past the horrible scent inside that room and the idea that I was in a house with eight vampires. Knowing that my parents were coming for me was both encouraging but also alarming. I didn't know if I was ready to face them.

"I feel sick." I managed to say out loud.

"It's perfectly normal." Said Carlisle coming forward. Esme, Emmett, Rosalie and Alice were outside the room.

"What do you think Carlisle?" Edward asked.

"I never saw a wolf turning for the first time, but Jacob told me it's pretty much like this."

"Can we be held responsible for this?" Rosalie's voice came from the hallway. "I'm not sure I want to be here when the shit hits the fan. I mean Leah will have to blame someone and I'm not really in the mood for…"

"It's been a day since we're here. I don't think it was our presence that started Isaac's phasing." Carlisle replied.

Listening to them talking as if I wasn't there was unsettling. It was obvious they knew more about me than what I had found out from my little research. Which wasn't reassuring either.

"Why isn't Jasper's power working?" Emmett asked.

"Because I think he's a shield." Bella answered.

"He probably is one." Edward agreed. "Both Harry and Will have dormant powers, so it wouldn't surprise me Isaac has one too."

"Maybe later I can collect a blood sample and study his case." Carlisle said.

"Shouldn't we take him outside? The last time we had a wolf phasing here we had to remodel the whole living room." Warned Rosalie. "Besides… we don't even know if he's going to turn into a wolf like the others. He might be a…" She hesitated.

"A different kind of thing." Carlisle finished for her.

I felt Emmett and Jasper coming to stand beside me, one on each side, and I snarled when they touched me. If being trapped inside a house with vampires was hard enough, being touched by two was even worse.

My blood boiled in disgust and I tried not to breathe.

"Easy there, kid. We're just going to take you outside." Emmett announced taking my left arm.

They're our friends for years. I recalled trying to stay calm while Jasper and Emmett carried me down the stairs and into the back garden where the fresh air helped giving me back some of my rational thinking.

And then I heard them.

"Are you alright son?"

Dad. I raised my eyes and looked into my father's worried face. Emmett and Jasper let me go and stepped aside. My mother came to inspect me.

"Are you hurt?" She asked.

"I'm fine." I lied. I had never felt this bad in my life but I didn't want them to think I was weak.

"What happened?" My mother asked turning to face the Cullens. Carlisle stepped forward.

"He came here on his own." He explained. "We were hunting. Bella decided to come and change her clothes and she found him here. When we noticed she was taking too long we came looking for her."

"I was the first one to arrive. Isaac was already on the floor shaking violently." Jasper continued. "I tried to calm him down but my powers don't work on him. Edward can't read his mind so we think he's a shield."

Now that my parents were here and I wasn't confined in a small room with vampires, I was feeling much better. The tremors had stopped.

"Why were you here Isaac?" My father asked.

If I told them the truth I'd be grounded for life.

"I was…"

Bella locked her eyes with mine and smiled.

"He came to ask me advice on his thesis. I've a degree in Biology, remember?" She was lying but I guess no one needed to know that.

"Thesis?" My father wasn't convinced.

"Biomechanics is such an interesting subject, right Isaac?" She smiled again.

I nodded.

How the hell does she knows my thesis? And why is she helping me out?

I knew her secret. I knew her family was involved in the death of three Quileutes. I could tell everyone about what they were and what they had done in the past. I could end this charade if I went to the police. So I didn't understand why Bella was protecting me.

"You should take the boy home." Said Doctor Cullen. "He's not shaking anymore but I advise you to be careful. He's going to phase sooner or later."

My mother placed her hand on my forehead. "Carlisle is right. He's burning Jacob."

"Give him the medication I prescribed for the twins when they phased and let him rest. It won't stop him from phasing but it will give you time to decide what to do."

"I guess this is the perfect time to talk to the boy about… certain things." Bella said. "Don't you think that's the wise thing to do?

My parents exchanged a look, probably considering if they were going to tell me the whole truth or not.

"If you need me, you know where I am." Carlisle offered.

The sun was setting when we reached our house. We didn't speak all the way back. They were probably deciding what to do and I was feeling way too nauseous to try and get my answers from them. I was relieved when Dad killed the engine.

"Tell me the truth Isaac. Did you go to the Cullens to ask about your thesis?" My father asked turning back.

"Yes." I had to confirm Bella's story or I'd be in trouble.

"Alright." He nodded. "Leah, get my father and Sue. I need to talk to them." His voice was laced with a bossy tone that made me flinch. I didn't like the tone and I didn't like the fact that he was ordering my mother like that. "I'm going to send the twins to take Sarah and JJ over to Seth's."

"Okay. I'll be right back."

Dad helped me to go to my bedroom and he gave me some medication. I didn't want to take it but my head was pounding and I still felt sick.

"It's for the headache and nausea." He said handing me a glass with water. "You'll feel better afterwards."

"What's wrong with me?" I decided to ask.

"You're taking on the family's heritage." He said.

"Why is it happening now?"

"I don't know. Things aren't the same for all of us. And you are definitely a different… case."

"So you wanted me gone because I'm… different?"

"No." He stated. "Look Isaac, you rest now and in a couple of hours we'll talk."

"Will you answer all of my questions?"

"Your mother and I will tell you everything you need to know."

He walked towards the door. Whatever that medication was, it was starting to work. I was feeling really tired and sleepy.

"Dad? Will I still be me?"

He shrugged. "I have no idea."

That's not very reassuring. I thought sadly.

"But you will still be my son." He added in a whisper. I blacked out after that and woke up several hours later. It was already dark outside.

"Sam found a fresh trace." I could hear my mother talking in the living room. "And two girls are missing. Charlie checked with the police and they said the girls vanished from their bedrooms without leaving any kind of evidence. No one heard or saw anything."

"Two girls in three days. If it was a nomad, he would feed once and leave the area. They never kill twice in such a small period of time." Uncle Seth said.

"Can this vampire be the reason for Isaac's condition?" My mother asked.

"I doubt it. This vampire came to Forks three days ago. This area has been vampire-free for many months. A single vampire wouldn't awaken his gene, especially when there are still thirteen of us protecting the Reservation." My father answered.

"But with the Cullens and the Denalis here… maybe…"

"The Denalis are already gone and the Cullens will follow soon. When Sam first phased the Cullens were living in Forks for months, Leah. That's how long the gene takes to be activated."

"I know Jacob but… It's like you said before, Isaac is different."

"Let me take care of Isaac, okay?"

"What's the plan Jake?" Uncle Seth asked.

"I want you and Sam to take the pack and investigate the area. I want this leech out of our lands for good. If he's a nomad I want him dead. If he's not, I want to know what's going on and then I want him dead. Got it?"

"Sure."

"What about me?" Asked my mother.

"I know you don't want to do this but I need you to take my place at the Council tonight."

"You want me to go to a meeting with Rhonda White?"

"You have nothing to worry about. Hal won't have old Quil's place. Besides Emily will be there replacing Sam and as far as I know she's not on good terms with Rhonda either."

"I swear to the Spirits that if that woman mentions that I stole you from Vanessa again and calls me a whore, I'll hit her so hard we'll have to call 911."

"That's my girl."

Mum and Uncle Seth left shortly after. Thanks to the medication I was feeling much better. The headache and nausea had stopped although my temperature was still high.

"Are you sure about this son?" I heard Granddad asking my Dad. "Don't you think it's better if you talk to the boy and Leah when she comes back?"

"Leah won't be back until dawn. She'll have a lot to deal with in the meeting. Besides what am I going to say?"

"The truth, son. You need to tell them what Odessa saw."

"I can't. Leah would freak out. And she'd probably kill me."

"She'll freak out all the same when she comes back home and finds Isaac gone."

"I have no other option."

"Yes, you do."

"Dad… he's different. He's not like us. He can't stay here."

"You don't know that for sure."

"He was injured by a werewolf when he was a kid!"

"I know that! But our gene might be more powerful than the werewolves' curse."

"Or he might end up killing us all and go rogue." Dad sounded a little broken when he said that but I couldn't be sure. At least now I knew what was going on. He had to choose between me and all of the people living in La Push. "I also need to think about Harry and Will. And I need to start working with JJ."

"JJ is just a child. He doesn't even know about the legends. Besides you don't know if JJ can actually replace Isaac. Odessa talked about a third alpha. That's Isaac by default not JJ."

"Isaac is not a wolf like us. He might not even be able to join the pack. I need a third potential alpha and JJ is my last son. I thought about trying to convince Leah to give me more children but I think she'll cut off my balls if I even suggest that."

"You'll have to tell the truth them sooner or later. Leah definitely needs to know what's going on."

"How can I tell her that she might lose one of the twins because of my incompetence?"

"You're not incompetent." My grandfather sighed. "You did the best you could that night. That… werewolf would've killed Isaac, Sarah, JJ and Madeleine if you hadn't arrived in time."

"And yet, Isaac was still injured."

"Sarah's room was closer and William was there with Isaac already. No one blames you for what happened."

"Right… well my brilliant performance that night turned one of my kids into a werewolf and Will got seriously hurt in the leg too." My father's voice was laced with guilt and regret.

"Will is fine now and Isaac may not turn into a werewolf."

"But what if he does?"

"We'll figure it out. Maybe there's a cure for this curse."

"Carlisle's been investigating for ten years and he found nothing. I can't rely on a cure, dad."

There was a heavy silence between the two for a couple of minutes. I slowly got up from the bed and started to pack. My father's words were clear in my head. I was a werewolf. I would turn into a beast and become a danger to everyone. I should not be in La Push or even near people.

"Jake, Odessa said…"

"I know what she said… I know her words by heart. I've been listening to those words for years. When she told me Leah was going to give birth to another baby boy I was thrilled. I thought my problems were solved. With Isaac here, Harry and Will would not have to kill each other for the alpha position and they'd both live. All I had to do was to make sure Isaac would become the strongest wolf in the pack. But I failed… that's why I have to do this."

I didn't like the sound of that. Actually I didn't understand a word of what he had told my grandfather. Who the hell was Odessa? Why would I prevent my twin brothers from killing each other?

"Can you put an eye on Isaac until I come back?" My Dad asked downstairs. "I don't think he'll phase until the full moon tomorrow night and I need to make the final arrangements with Edward."

"Sure, son."

Final arrangements with Edward? Was he going to hand me over to the Cullens? Maybe he was going to ask Edward to kill me and hide my body?

If I really am a danger to everyone he should've gotten rid of me sooner. I thought bitterly. Standing up, I took my bag and left quietly through the back door. My grandfather's wheelchair would make sure to slow him down when he decided to check on me and after my Dad had left, Granddad seemed more interested on watching television.

Before I hit the road, I had only one more stop to make.

The window opened slowly, making a small noise. Inside it was dark but I could see perfectly. JJ was sleeping soundly in the bed closer to the door. Sarah's bed was just next to the window so I didn't have to walk around much. I could hear four more people breathing in the house: Aunt Gwen, Lilly, Seth Junior and Susie Leigh. They were all sleeping.

Sarah opened her eyes as soon as I shook her.

"Boo?" She asked yawning.

"Shhhh… Don't wake JJ up."

"What are you doing here? Harry said you were sick."

Not sick, cursed. I didn't voice that thought though.

"I'm fine."

"Why are you here? It's late."

"I'm leaving."

"Leaving? To Arizona? Can't you wait until after my birthday?"

I shook my head but she couldn't see me in the darkness.

"I'm not going back to the University. I'm quitting."

Sarah sat down on the bed and looked shocked.

"What?"

"I'm done with that. I just realized I don't need to study anymore. I've got two degrees already, I can find a job easily. I just came here because I wanted to say goodbye."

"But… I thought you were going to be an assistant to one of your professors…"

Yeah, well I thought that too before I learned our parents are giant wolves who protect La Push from vampires and that I was scratched by a werewolf and will probably become one tomorrow night. Once again I kept my mouth shut.

"I'm going to be gone for a while but I'll be fine, okay?"

"You haven't told Mum or Dad, have you?"

"They wouldn't let me go."

"Where are you going Boo?"

"I'll call you when I figure it out."

I had no idea where to go. Probably a remote place, in the middle of nowhere, away from people and civilization.

"I'm sorry about missing your birthday. But one day you'll understand." I hugged my sister and after that I jumped out of the window landing on the soft grass that circled Uncle Seth's house.

"Isaac!" My sister called from upstairs. "Don't go!"

I realized then I would probably be away from my family for a long time. I was leaving to keep them safe and if I couldn't find a way to control myself and stop being a monster, I'd have to stay away forever.

Then again maybe my place was to stay away from them. After all I was different.

Of course I'd rather tell Sarah what was going on but I was scared of her reaction. I had been skeptical myself until the moment I realized what the Cullens really were. And Jay, he only knew half of it. Sarah, who knew nothing about this, would most definitely freak out and call me a lunatic. So it was better to leave things like this.

Carrying a small bag with some clothes and personal objects, I walked away from La Push unnoticed in the night. I was going to take a bus to Port Angeles as soon as I reached Forks and I would meet the woman who had called me earlier. Maybe she could help me.

I was half way to Forks when I noticed a car parked at the side of the road. A woman came out and kicked the tire in frustration.

"Stupid piece of junk!" She yelled. I approached her quietly. She was younger than she seemed from afar. She had brown long hair and green eyes.

"Do you need help?" I asked her.

She turned around, surprised to see someone there so late at night.

"Only if you know a car shop nearby." She took a few steps back.

"As a matter of fact, I do." I smiled trying to tell her I was harmless. "But they're closed. It's late."

"Great…" She mumbled. "I'm not going to get there on time."

"My father's a mechanics… I can take a look if you want to." I shouldn't be wasting my time like this, especially because when my grandfather realized I wasn't in the house, he'd call my father and they'd put half of La Push searching for me, but I felt sorry for her. She was alone and that road was not used often which meant she'd have toubles asking for help.

"Maybe I should just call the tow truck." She took another step back and I sighed heavily realizing she was actually scared of me.

"Look, Miss, if I were a serial killer or a rapist I would've hurt you already. So if you want me to fix your car just open the hood, alright?"

"You think I'm a scared little girl?" She asked trying to sound confident.

Yes. I thought to myself. I could feel her fear rolling off of her in waves and she was shorter than me, so yes she was just a scared little girl. She could hardly intimidate anyone.

"Well I'm not…" She added. "I'm a black belt in karate for three years now and I'm not afraid of using my techniques."

I fought the urge to laugh. This girl was a riot. She was bold, but still a riot.

"My mother is scarier than you and she's older and never learned karate." I told her. "I'm Seth by the way. What's your name?"

I decided to use my middle name. Even on that particular aspect I was different from my siblings. I was the only one who had a middle name.

"Sophia." She finally said. Then she bent down, opened the hood and grabbed a flashlight. "I knew I should've asked Caden to bring his car."

"That's the problem." I pointed out to the battery. "This wire is loose. It's not making contact with the battery."

"So… it will work again, right?"

"Sure."

"Thank God for your father!" She exclaimed.

"My father?" I asked confused.

"You learned this from him, right?"

"I used to watch him fixing cars, yes… but he only taught my older brothers. I guess I learned from myself. Besides fixing a car it's hardly rocket science." I told her. "There. Try now."

"Thanks Seth." Sophia said placing her seat belt on. As soon as she turned the key, the engine started.

"You're welcome."

"Hey… Where are you going at this hour?"

"I'm taking the first bus that leaves in the morning from Forks to Port Angeles."

"Well… I'm going to Port Angeles too. Do you want to come?"

"Are you sure? I can be a monster."

You are one. A voice inside of my head recalled.

"If you are, I think you're the good kind of monster, so come along. At least I'll have someone to talk to."

I walked inside of the black Ford and smiled in disbelief. A few minutes ago that girl was scared of me and now she wanted me to travel with her.

"I never knew there is a good kind of monsters." I said.

"I guess you'll just have to trust me, won't you?" Sophia stated.

I took one last look behind of me before leaving La Push. I didn't know if I was actually doing the right thing. All I know was that a few hours later my parents would realize I was gone and they would come after me. Maybe the Cullens too. By then I would have to be as far away as I could from the state of Washington.

"Are you okay?" Sophia asked when she noticed I was still looking back.

"I don't know why… but I think I'm going to miss this place." I confessed out loud.

It was not just the place, it was the people as well. My parents, my sister, my brothers, my uncles and my aunts, my grandparents, my cousins, hell I would probably even miss Jay.

"What made you leave then?"

"A monster." I faced the girl at the wheel. Her green eyes were shining brightly.

"Good or bad?" She inquired.

"Actually," I told her. "He's just a monster of a different kind."
