Book I – The Third

9. Howls
"My mum is going to kill me." Sophia whined again. "We should've called the tow truck. Do you know what happens when you abandon a car on the side of the road?"
I rolled my eyes. I knew that the next time we'd see that car (if we ever see again it at all) it would probably be without the tyres, the wheel, the seats… A car on the side of the road was an invitation for all kinds of thieves.
"My mum is going to be so angry when I tell her I left her car behind." She continued. "I specifically told you not to go over 90 per hour."
We had this discussion about four or five times since we'd left the car a few miles after going through Sequim.
"You should've told me the consequences first. How was I supposed to know that the engine would collapse like that? Most of the cars don't break when they're going over 90 per hour!" I retorted.
"We should've turned back and go to Sequim."
Turning back to Sequim was one of our options at that point. Without a car we didn't have any chance to reach Seattle and we'd probably be caught by my uncles and older brothers. But that meant we'd have to walk about 80 miles on foot and it was raining.
"We discussed our options and we agreed we should take a ride, didn't we?" I recalled her.
She had been the one to convince Chuck to give us a ride to Lynnwood. The forty-six year old truck driver was nice and helpful but in the end he did not keep his word.
"We shouldn't have trusted Chuck." Sophia said and I stopped walking.
"I told you he wasn't going the right way. You said I was being paranoid and that Chuck knew these roads like the palm of his hands." I turned to face her.
She crossed her arms over her chest.
"So now I'm the one to blame?"
Taking the opportunity when we were both sleeping, Chuck went south instead of east. He had fooled us well. He had promised he'd take us to Lynnwood but we ended up in a farm next to Dosewallips State Park. I realized something was wrong as soon as the truck stopped. Then Chuck introduced us his family: his wife Jessy and his kids Hunter and Carson.
They were not the people we'd seen in the pictures Chuck had in his truck. The pictures showed a blondish woman around forty years old with an also blonde teenage girl.
Jessy was younger and had red hair and freckles. So I figured Jessy was either his mistress or Chuck had two wives and two families who probably knew nothing about one another. There were numerous of cases of men having two different families in the USA.
When I asked him about taking us to Lynnwood like he'd promised, he told us he'd be back to the road in a couple of days.
That was unacceptable. Once my family realized the way I was taking, they'd reach us in a few hours much less two days. However I couldn't force Chuck to take us when he had been nice enough to get us a ride, and I sure couldn't pull him away from his family, even knowing he was a cheater. So I decided to leave. Brinnon was only a few miles away from Jessy's farm and the city was our best chance to get a place to stay for the night and a new vehicle.
"I'm not saying this is your fault." I said trying to be diplomatic. "But it's no use to keep complaining now. We have to keep going."
"It's raining, it's damn cold and I'm tired."
"I can't control the weather. I offered you my jacket which you promptly declined and I can carry you although it won't be a comfortable journey, so suck it up."
"You're an idiot."
"And you complain too much."
We had to keep walking. We had to keep putting distance between us and my uncles and brothers even though right now they were going the wrong way. Just before leaving Port Angeles I had made a stop at the bus terminal and placed some of my clothes inside a bus that was leaving with twelve passengers to Neah Bay. Fortunately Uncle Embry and the others took the bite but they would find out I had fooled them sooner or later.
"We should go back to Chuck's house."
"If we keep walking south we'll reach Brinnon in an hour or so."
"An hour? Come on Isaac… We won't get to Seattle today that's for sure, so might as well go back and ask Chuck and Jessy to let us stay."
"We can't stay two days in there!" I raised my voice.
"Why not?"
"Because… my family is coming after me." I announced. I figured it would be best to hide the fact that my family could morph into giant wolves and were following my tracks as we spoke.
"What?"
"A friend of mine sent me a text message telling me my parents are looking for me."
"Is that why you ditched your cell phone?"
"Yes."
I had received a message from Jay right after leaving Port Angeles warning me that something was going on. He also said that the Cullens were involved which meant more trouble for me. Apparently the Cullens were no ordinary vampires. They were rich, they had centuries of experience, they had influent friends all around the country and some of them had special powers.
To avoid being tracked I had left my cell phone in the trash back in Port Angeles. They could easily find me if I kept it with me.
"So they called the police?"
Though it was a possibility I highly doubted they had involved the police in this matter when they had already involved the Cullens.
"I'm not sure."
"What did you do Isaac? You must've done something for them to be after you and don't give me that bullshit about werewolves."
"I didn't do anything. I've find out a few things they were keeping from me, things that apparently your mother can corroborate so I guess they're trying to keep me from meeting her."
"I don't understand what my mother has to do with your family."
"That makes two of us but that's why I want to talk to her. Now can we please go?"
We were wasting time and Sophia was right, the weather was turning worse and I wanted to find a place to stay for the night because according to my father, tonight there would be a full moon.
I grabbed Sophia's hand and pulled her with me but all of a sudden she gasped and released herself from my grip.
"Oh my God Isaac, you're burning!"
I had forgotten that my temperature was running high ever since I had left La Push. I wasn't feeling sick or anything, it seemed that it was normal to me to be this hot.
"I'm fine."
"No, you're not. You have a fever. You must be sick."
"I feel fine. Let's keep going."
Sophia approached me and grabbed my hand in hers.
"You can't be fine when your temperature is this high."
"Trust me Sophia. I'm okay."
"As soon as we reach Brinnon, I'll buy some medication." She announced and took the lead. I felt somehow happy to know that she was worried about me even though I couldn't exactly tell why.
When we entered Brinnon it wasn't raining anymore it was pouring. Fortunately we found a small motel and we decided it was better to get a room and rest for the night. The journey from Port Angeles to Brinnon had taken us almost eight hours. We weren't even supposed to be there. By now we should be reaching Seattle.
The motel consisted in a single building of connected rooms with only one floor, whose doors faced the parking area. I noticed there were only three cars parked. Two from Washington State and a third one from Nevada. We got the last two bedrooms on the west wing of the motel both were in close proximity with the forest that spread on the west side of Brinnon.
A few minutes later I heard Sophia calling her mother from her bedroom to let her know we wouldn't be able to get to Seattle until tomorrow. She was able to leave out the part where we ditched her car on the side of the road though. She also tried to question her mother about how she had met my family, but it didn't work.
I took a cold shower and then I turned on the old computer in the desk. I had paid a few extra dollars to access the internet.
The sun would disappear soon from the sky and I wanted to research a few things about werewolves. I was hoping to find something more than what people usually knew from films and novels. Werewolves' stories were famous all around the world. There were thousands of different legends related to the half-man, half-wolf creature.
According to a Russian professor who had been teaching History of the Supernatural in Russian State University for the Humanities for fifteen years there were still people who believed that werewolves, as well as vampires and witches, were real.
On his webpage there was a description of what people thought a werewolf was in modern days: "In folklore, a werewolf is a person who changes into a wolf or a wolf-like creature after being either bitten or scratched by another werewolf. It's believed that the full moon exerts some kind of power over the beast and it triggers the transformation. The werewolf is hence a beast half-human, half-animal whose only purpose is to attack and kill everyone that stands in its way. There's no part of human conscience present in the werewolf, he is unable to think or recognize his loved ones, and most of the times he won't even acknowledge what he has done. There is rarely a cure for this condition and the only way to kill a werewolf is to wound him with silver."
I had a lot of doubts about the use of silver to kill a werewolf. I had seen a wolf fighting a werewolf inside my own bedroom once and I had almost one hundred per cent sure that Will did not kill that monster with silver. What I saw were claws, teeth and brute force.
As for the moon, my father had mentioned something about me phasing during the full moon which meant I should actually consider that. There were a few things I couldn't still comprehend such as if I was a werewolf why hadn't I phased in the last ten years? Could the medication Dr. Cullen had prescribed me prevent me from morphing? I know it was a strong sedative that took away my memories of that night but could it also be an inhibitor?
"Isaac?" Sophia's voice reached me. She was outside my bedroom's door. The last thing I needed right now was having someone with me. If my father thought I was dangerous, I should be careful because he certainly knew more about werewolves than me. Plus I dindn't want to hurt innocent people.
"Isaac? I know you're in there. I need your help."
I got up and opened the door making sure I didn't leave the dark shadows that were flooding the bedroom.
"What's wrong?" I asked. Sophia handed me a paper bag and passed through the door carrying another bag in her hands. "What's this?"
"Dinner. There's a Burger King nearby. I'm sure you must be hungry."
Actually I was starving but I was thinking about buying something on a vending machine outside and eating alone.
"I need to use your bathroom. Mine doesn't have hot water and it is freaking cold."
"Did you call the reception?"
"Yep. They said they'll fix the problem tomorrow."
Sophia took her bag over to my bathroom and closed the door behind her, not giving me the chance to argue. She took a quick shower and as she left the small bathroom a line of steam and the smell of coconut followed her around.
"You like burgers don't you?"
"Yes but you shouldn't have bothered."
"You let me use your shower."
You didn't give me an option. I thought.
"So… what do you need from my mother Isaac?" Sophia asked sitting down next to me on the bed and unwrapping her hamburger.
"First I'd like to know how she met my parents. They rarely leave La Push. Before my youngest brother was born, my dad used to spend a few weeks on the road. He was a truck driver for a few years but when JJ was born, he bought his old garage back and opened an auto shop that he runs with his brother-in-law and his cousin."
"Before moving to Astoria my mother lived in Gold Beach, Oregon. Does that place mean anything to you?"
"Not really." I pondered a bit about my next question. "What you told me about your mother earlier… is it true?"
"About owing a flower shop?"
"No. About the other thing. About what she says she can do." Sophia had told me her mother had a special ability.
"I don't know. Dad believes it. He says that she's like a medium but instead of having contact with spirits and stuff she can see fragments of other people's futures when she looks into the palm of their hands."
"Were her premonitions ever right?"
Sophia shrugged. "I have no idea. The only other person she talks about this ability, besides my dad, is her friend who still lives in Gold Beach. Besides she doesn't practice it frequently."
"If she has her family and friends in Gold Beach… why did she move away to Astoria?"
"I've been in Gold Beach twice. It's a small town and very boring. I guess mum wanted to live in a bigger town."
"So no one can really tell if she can actually see the future."
"I guess not…"
Some vampires had abilities and according to Edward my twin brothers also had dormant powers, so why couldn't Calleigh Felton see the future by touching one's hand? Could she know something about my future? But how if we had never met before?
"It's raining again." Sophia complained as we listened to the raindrops hitting the pavement outside. "And it's damn cold in here."
"The AC is broken." I warned her.
"Yours too? This is the crappiest motel ever!"
The broken AC was not a problem to me right now. My temperature was too high for me to feel cold but for Sophia things were different.
"Now it would be a good idea to offer me your jacket, you know?" She suggested.
"Right…" I took my jacket from the chair next to the window and gave it to her. When our hands brushed she gasped just like the first time.
"Your temperature is not right Isaac. I think you should go to the Hospital."
"High temperatures run in the family. I'm fine."
Sophia looked at me suspiciously but then she abandoned the subject by turning the TV on. She took the right side of the bed and started flipping the channels.
No quiet night for me. I thought as I took the left side of the bed.
"I can feel your heat over here." She murmured.
"Well you can always go back to your room and your TV."
"I'm not complaining." She stated. "You're better than a blanket."
I probably turned red when she smiled at me after that comment. I wasn't used being complimented by a girl even if that girl had just compared me to a blanket.
"So… do you want to talk more about your family?" She asked while watching the commercials.
"Not really. Besides there's not much to tell."
"There's always something to tell."
"In that case, you start."
She frowned, thinking about something to share with me.
"I'm the middle child. I have an older brother and a younger sister." She declared. Then she turned to face me.
"Me too." I confessed. "Two older siblings and two younger."
"Five kids? Your parents have been busy, huh?"
I rolled my eyes. Every friend of mine in the University used to be surprised whenever I mentioned I had four siblings. Most of them were an only child.
"But at least you never get bored, right?" Sophia added.
"I guess not."
Pausing again, she focused.
"My best friend's name is Mackenzie." She announced.
"Is that a boy's name or a girl's name?" I asked curiously.
Just ask her if she has a boyfriend, you moron! A part of my brain rebelled.
"In this case… it's a girl's name. She left Astoria last year. She wants to be a dancer and went to live with her mother in Las Vegas. Who's your best friend?"
I was surprised to notice that I was glad Mackenzie was a girl.
"My best friend's name is Sarah." I replied.
"How sweet. Your girlfriend is your best friend." She commented.
"Sarah is not my girlfriend. She's my sister. She's one year younger than me."
"Sorry… I thought she was your girlfriend."
I could almost swear she sighed in relief when I said Sarah was actually my sister.
"I'm going to be nineteen on November eleventh."
"Really? I'll be eighteen on November eleventh."
We were born on the same day, only Sophia was one year older than me.
"That's quite a coincidence." She stated. "I wonder if my mother knows about this."
"We'll ask her when we see her tomorrow." That and much more. Mrs. Calleigh Felton would have a lot to answer for. "Is there anything else you want to share?"
"Are you trying to get rid of me?" Sophia asked.
"No." I answered sincerely. Having Sophia there was both right and wrong. I enjoyed her company because it made me feel less alone but since it was a full moon tonight it was also dangerous. She should stay away from me. Actually if what my father had said was true no one was safe around me, especially tonight.
"What are you going to do after you speak to my mum? Are you going back home? Are you going to Arizona? Or will you just… go away?"
That is an interesting question. I thought to myself. I guess it all depended on what Calleigh Felton would tell me.
"I have no idea."
"Pacific Beach is a nice place to live, you know." She locked her green eyes on mine when she spoke.
"Really? What do you do in Pacific Beach?"
"I teach kids with disabilities."
"What do you teach them?"
"To play guitar, piano, violin… It's cool. The kids are great and our team is lacking volunteers right now."
"Are you offering me a job?"
"If you're interested I can talk to my boss."
"What if I can't play any instrument at all?"
"They do all sort of activities. Sports, reading classes, walks in the natural park, trips to museums. I'm sure you can fit in one of those programs."
A werewolf taking care of disabled children in the woods. That sounded like a fail to me.
"Is that your dream job? I mean I know it's quite gratifying but do you want to spend your life in Pacific Beach?"
"I wanted to be with Mackenzie in Las Vegas dancing. I wanted to be a dancer."
"Why didn't you go with her?"
"I had an accident a few years ago. My left knee had to go through five surgeries. I still feel pain from time to time. And even if I didn't have that accident, I didn't have the money. Mackenzie's family is wealthy but mine… not so much. After the accident my parents told me I should finish high school and go to community college or work with them in the flower shop."
"But you went to Pacific Beach instead."
"I met someone who told me about this project, and then Caden told me I should go, he told me I should heal myself too because I was going through a self-destructive path when all of my dreams went down the drain. He said that it would be good for me to leave home for a while, so I went. Now I'm saving money and in a couple of years I'm going to travel. I haven't set a destiny yet… maybe Chile or Peru."
"Travelling seems nice…" I said. "If that's what you want, go for it."
"It's definitely better than to stay here thinking about what my life could've been if I could still dance." She commented sadly.
Involuntarily I squeezed her hand to transmit her some reassurance. Still staring at the TV, Sophia hugged my arm and leaned her head into my shoulder. A few minutes later the both of us drifted off to sleep.
I woke up suddenly. The clock marked four in the morning. My senses were on high alert even though I didn't understand why. Sophia was still sleeping next to me. The scent of her shampoo was now fading away and I could feel another scent overpowering the coconut perfume in her hair.
Wolves. Two wolves.
And as if they were able to read my mind, two synchronized howls echoed in the woods, right outside my bedroom.
They had found me.
