Book I – The Third

Isaac Black

12. Making Amends

"What the hell did you do to me so bad that you think I have to hate you?" My self-control was by a thread now. "If you want to tell me something, just say it! You want me to say sorry about you getting hurt, fine! I'm sorry!"

"You're an asshole, Isaac! You're just trying to be the good guy, but deep inside I know you hate my guts!"

In that moment I remember thinking that my brother probably suffered from some kind of bipolar disorder which would pretty much explain why he was acting like a damn lunatic.

"I've no idea what you're talking about!" I all but yelled. We were way past a civil talk now. We were shouting at each other and I didn't know how to stop. A few more minutes like that and we could both phase right there.

"The hell you don't!"

"Shut up both of you!" My Dad stormed into the house and placed himself between us. He was definitely not happy to find us yelling at each other. Sophia was glued to the wall not very far from me, in silence. "What the hell are you trying to do? Wake up the whole Reservation?" He barked.

Dad was scary when he was standing tall, arms crossed over his chest and eyes boring into us.

Will looked down. "I'm out of here." He muttered and prepared to go upstairs but Dad placed a huge hand on his shoulder.

"You're staying here." It was not a request. There was something in his voice that made me flinch and apparently it had the same effect on Will because he didn't dare to move. "Hi there… I'm Jacob Black, I'm Isaac's father." Dad turned to Sophia. His tone of voice was softer now as if a different person was talking now.

She remained in her spot, her eyes were scanning him and Will intently. She was taking in their height, their features and was probably reaching a conclusion: they weren't normal people.

"I'm Sophia Felton." She stammered nervously. "You look like your father." She whispered to me.

"I'm sorry about my sons. They need to learn how to behave properly in front of our guests." Dad glared at me and William. "Can you give us a minute Sophia? I need a word with my impetuous sons."

"Sure…" She agreed immediately. "Actually I was going to ask if I could use your bathroom and take a quick shower."

"It's the second door on the right." Dad answered with a smile. "Make yourself at home."

Sophia left her safe spot near the wall and moved slowly around us, taking a wider turn than needed to reach the stairs and then we heard her going into my room to collect her bag and finally into the bathroom.

I could feel Dad's eyes on me as soon as Sophia turned the water on upstairs.

"This has to stop." Dad said. Curiously he was not speaking to me but to my brother.

"That's why I want to leave." He replied. "Just let me go. You don't need me anymore."

"I know why you want to leave but you don't need to go William. We talked about this many times before. You were fifteen years old, you were too young and they attacked us by surprise."

I noticed that William was about to cry. I wanted to ask what the hell had happened because it was clear that I didn't know that part of the story, but in that moment Harry walked in. His face was serious when he stretched his arm in my direction. I realized he was holding my cell phone. The same one I had ditched in Port Angeles. I guess they had recovered it but had kept quiet about it.

"It's Sarah. She doesn't want to speak to anyone unless it's Isaac." He informed. My father nodded, and I took the phone from my brother's hand. I knew they would all hear everything which meant I would have to lead the talk and prevent her from speaking about her relationship with Jay.

"Where are you?" I asked her. "Are you alright?"

"Boo… I'm scared…" She whined. "I'm at the E.R. in Seton Medical Center. Jay's not well, the doctors don't know what's wrong with him. I don't know what to do."

"What happened? Did he find the person he was looking for?"

"Yes. We met her and her daughters. She goes by a different name and she didn't recognize him at first."

"Did they argue?"

"Sort of. He was really hurt because she told him he was a mistake. She told him she wasn't ready to have a kid. She even said she never wanted him."

I guess that was not something you wanted to hear your biological mother say.

"She shouldn't have said that." I admitted, feeling sorry for Jay. "What happened after that?"

"We left… We were on our way back to the airport when…" Sarah wept a little. "When Jay began to tremble and when I touched him he was burning. I told the taxi driver to leave us at the nearest Hospital but now I'm here on my own and the doctors… they said they don't know what's wrong. I believe they think he has something contagious and they don't let me see him. They're asking questions and I don't know what to tell them. Can you please come here? I don't want to be here alone but I can't leave him here either."

I didn't reply immediately. Realization had hit me the instant Sarah had mentioned Jay's symptoms and I noticed my father and brothers understood what was happening to him too.

"Jay's turning." Harry spoke finally in a whisper. "He's a wolf like us."

Dad nodded.

"Harry, phase and warn your uncles. Tell them where they are and tell them to hurry. Jay can't phase in that hospital." Dad ordered. "William, bring me Jason. I need to know how Jay was able to find out that his biological mother lives in Austin."

The twins left the house immediately.

"Isaac? Are you still there?" My sister called.

"Stay calm Sarah. I'm coming, okay?" I lied. "Whatever you do, don't leave that Hospital."

"You won't tell anyone, will you?"

"No, of course not. Wait there. Everything will be alright." I waited a few more seconds until she hung up.

"You knew…" Dad looked at me intensively. "You knew she was in Austin with Jay Morris and you knew he was searching for his mother."

"I can explain."

"Then you better do it fast." He snarled.

I had promised Sarah I wouldn't tell anyone about her dating Jay and I was going to keep my word even if that meant I'd have to leave out some information from Dad.

"Jay knows that something is going on and when I disappeared from La Push he probably thought someone had hurt me so I guess he tried to protect Sarah, like I instructed him to do." I had never ordered such a thing but I felt that somehow I owed something to Jay since he did have the courage to protect my sister. "He probably thought that something bad could happen to her too and took her to a place he thought they'd be safe."

Only things didn't turn out the way he thought and now he's going to phase. I thought worriedly.

"You should've told me she was with Jay. And you should've told me Jay knew about us."

"He doesn't know exactly what is happening or what we really are. He's just suspicious. He believes that you and the others are involved in something weird but he doesn't know anything specifically."

"Well I guess he'll know soon enough."

"So… he has the gene too, right?"

"Yes. Jason was a wolf once but he stopped phasing years ago."

"Will Uncle Embry and Uncle Paul reach them on time?"

"Probably not but I'll send back-ups."

The back-ups he was referring to were the Cullens. Right before Will's arrival with Jason Morris, Dad had called the vampires and Carlisle left with his son Jasper to Austin, promising to do everything they could to help.

"Why did you call them?" I asked when we were joining Will and Jason in the living room. Our agreement and our friendship with the Cullens was still a mystery to me.

"Carlisle's a doctor and we might need someone like him to take care of… collateral damages."

I nodded. I guess he was right. Carlisle Cullen's influence as a prestigious doctor could help Jay and my sister.

"Jake… I swear I didn't know Jay was going to Austin." Jason Morris said even before my father motioned him to sit down.

"I remember you said you'd never tell your son about Milena."

"I didn't tell him a word. Every time he questioned me about her, I'd always tell him the same. That I didn't know where she was."

"Did you give him her name?"

"Maybe I mentioned her name once or twice, but she changed names when she was put under the witness protection program, so I figured it would be fine."

"I guess Jay's a lot smarter than you think." I said. I shouldn't be standing up for him because the idiot was dating my sister, but to hide his mother's identity and whereabouts was not right on Jason's part. He deserved to know the truth.

"I never actually thought he'd do this. When he gets home, I'll have a word with him. I promise."

"That won't be needed. When he gets here he'll answer directly to me." Dad announced.

"What do you mean?"

"He's about to phase Jason. Your son is going to be in the pack soon."

Jason was frozen. I guess he had never contemplated that idea.

"But our lands haven't been visited by vampires since… years. And the Cullens have been here for what? Two days? That's not enough time to activate the gene, is it?"

"I don't know what's going on either." My father admitted. "But we have two new wolves and there's been a nomad lurking around so, it possible that they're phasing because of him."

"Is there a new enemy?" Jason asked worriedly.

"Alice doesn't seem to think so." Dad confessed. "But still… I need a favour. I want you to warn the other former wolves. Tell them to look after their kids closely. Especially Ethan and Rick. Theo and August are old enough to phase now."

Jason nodded. "What about Jay? Should I go to Austin?"

"No. I've sent Embry and Paul already. He'll be fine."

Before leaving our house Jason made my father promise he'd call him as soon as Jay stepped inside La Push's soil. Whether it was his guilty conscience for being a crappy father to Jay or authentic care for his son's wellbeing I didn't know but at least Jason wanted to be there to help and tell Jay about the legends.

"Can you be civil with each other for the rest of the day?" Dad asked turning to me and Will. My brother was the first to nod. "Good. Now I'm going to see Granddad. Behave. And don't forget we have a guest upstairs."

As soon as Dad left William went to the kitchen where he raided the fridge. He took some food and a bottle of water with him and then he left through the back door.

"Let him go." Harry told me when I took a few steps towards the kitchen. I meant to follow him because I wanted to know the truth. "Let him go… if you want to know what really happened… I'll tell you."

I turned back to face Harry. He was serious now which meant that whatever he had to tell me, it was no joke.

"You said you remembered that night. Do you really remember everything?" He asked.

"Yes, I mean... I think so."

"Do you remember why Mum and Dad weren't home?"

"Not really…" I admitted.

"There was a bonfire at First Beach that night. The whole pack was meant to be there as well as the Cullens and the Tribal Council. We were upset when Mum said we weren't going. She said that Alice wanted to speak to the pack about some boring visions concerning the Volturi and we'd be better off at home. Will argued about being treated like a kid but in the end we stayed. Maddie came to take care of JJ and Will and I were suppose to put an eye on you and Sarah."

"You're not adding anything up, Harry." My brother rolled his eyes at me.

"Let me finish." He said and I nodded. "A half an hour after our parents left, Lewis called. He was having a party at his house. He invited us. Drinks, food, music, girls… How could we say no to that, right? Besides Maddie was here. We thought it would be okay to go."

So they had disobeyed our parents. There was nothing new there.

"I hesitated before leaving." He continued. "I told Will that maybe we should stay but he convinced me to go. And as soon as we got there, we kind of forgot our responsibilities. We were having a good time until Lewis said something about smoke coming from a block away. Since he was high, as most of the other guys at the party, we didn't think much of it immediately. Then the smoke turned more intense and Will and I went to the back yard. Only then we realized that it came from our house. We arrived only seconds before Dad. I pulled Maddie and JJ out and Will went upstairs to get you and Sarah but he found that werewolf blocking his way. He phased and the battle begun. Dad arrived shortly after… and the rest you already know."

"So… Will's angry because you two went to a party…" I didn't know what else to say to my brother.

"Yes… if we had stayed…"

"You couldn't guess there was a werewolf coming. You were fifteen years old and most fifteen-year old kids never do what their parents order them to do. You and Will shouldn't feel guilty."

"We were supposed to take care of you." Harry muttered. "We failed."

"I thought Will hated me because I got him hurt."

"He doesn't hate you. He thinks you should hate him because he was not here to help you when you needed the most."

I had lived ten years believing that my father and brother didn't like me and all of a sudden I had learned they acted that way due to remorse and guilt over something that was completely out of their reach. That werewolf's attack had not been their fault. Was I the only one who could see that? Why were they still clinging to guilt?

"Let it go, Harry. If you need to blame someone, blame the werewolf."

"It's easy to talk… but… things were really hard back then. William wanted to take the blame for the attack. He even suggested that Dad should punish him but Dad was feeling as guilty as we were and he refused to do it."

"So basically Dad and Will have been beating themselves up all these years because I was attacked that night?"

"Yes." He confessed. "I feel guilty too, you know…"

"Well, you shouldn't."

"Maybe you should tell William that. So he can let it go and feel a little better?" Harry suggested.

"I would tell him if I knew where he went."

"Try the cliffs. He was always fond of that place."

The cliffs. I could hardly believe that my favourite place in La Push was also my brother's. It was kind of weird knowing we actually had things in common because Will and I were pretty much the opposite of each other.

I sighed deeply when I spotted Will sitting down on the cliffs, his legs falling over the edge. There was hardly any wind that morning so the ocean was calm. Will had a pile of small rocks on his right side and one by one he was throwing them into the water. He was still frustrated, I could tell, but hopefully we'd be able to sort things out soon.

As I approached, he turned back and sighed resentfully after realizing it was me.

"Can't a guy be left alone in this damn place?" He fumed throwing a rock with more strength than needed. I ignored the comment and sat down on his left side, leaving a safe distance between us.

"I came in peace."

"I want to be left alone." He insisted.

"I won't take much of your time."

"What do you want Isaac?"

"I want to say thanks."

William met my eyes and again I realized we had the same brown eyes. Our father's eyes. I guess that was one more thing we had in common.

"Why are you thanking me?" He finally asked.

"Because you were there for me that night. Because you saved me."

He diverted his eyes as soon as I said that and focused on the water below.

"Harry asked you to come here and tell me this, didn't he?"

"No." Harry suggested it but I was there because I wanted to be. "I know what happened. I know you feel guilty, just like Dad does… but you are being idiots. You couldn't have predicated the attack so you shouldn't feel guilty."

"I convinced Harry to go to that party. Did he tell you that?"

I nodded. Just like Harry had told me, Will wanted someone to blame him so he could feel less bad about what he had done however I was an understanding and reasonable person and I didn't want my family to feel guilty anymore.

"And you don't hate me?" He asked stunned. "I almost caused your death."

"You saved me. You faced a monster and you even got hurt in the process… You have to be really brave to do that."

I was hoping that a boost on his ego would do the trick and allow him to understand I was okay with the past.

"It's okay to hate me. I deserve it."

Now he sounded broken and I was sick and tired of repeating myself.

"Cut it out Will! You and Dad are being stupid! Blaming yourselves won't lead you anywhere! You fought bravely, you did what you could and in the end things turned out okay. I'm a wolf, like all of you, and even if I won't get to be in the pack, I'll still be a wolf."

"But… we could've prevented the attack… your nightmares, your anxiety… it's on us."

"People overcome obstacles every day. I overcame mine. Maybe it was harder than it was supposed to be if I had known the truth sooner but it doesn't matter anymore. You have to let it go. You have to give yourself a break." I put an uncertain hand on his shoulder. Since he didn't push me away I kept going. "Guilt eats you alive William… and I want my brother back."

"Are you sure?" He almost chocked. "You don't hate me for what I did?"

I nodded negatively. I knew it would take a while for us to start over, but I was willing to take a chance.

"I'm sure." I smiled. "But if it's punishment that you want, you can always let me hit you."

"You want to throw a punch at me?" Will was surprised.

"Yep, actually I'd love to. You punched me in the face earlier, remember? It's payback time."

My brother got up slowly and I copied him.

"Take your best shot, pup." He cooed me. "Let me see what you have."

I swung my right arm at him and hit his face with a clenched fist. He took three steps backwards after the impact and got a bleeding lip. Cleaning the blood with the back of his hand he finally smiled.

"Not bad!" He exclaimed. "We're even now, right?" He asked fighting back the tears. We could have hugged but we decided to leave the sentimental actions for another time.

"Sure. But I will require more forms of compensation. Your new car, for example… I'm sure you won't mind giving her to me."

He laughed loudly and I joined him.

"You got some nerve, kid."

"I've learned from the best." I replied with a grin and I could tell he understood what I meant. After all Will did have a reputation as an insolent young man. "We better go home. I left Harry with Sophia."

"You left Harry with your girl? That was a bad move, Isaac."

I was tired of explaining to everyone that Sophia was just a friend, so this time I didn't bother.

"I told him to leave her alone."

"You clearly don't know Harry."

We had slowly started to walk back home when I felt two wolves nearby. I saw their shadows passing through the trees about fifty feet away from us. I didn't know who they were but William did because he waved at them and they kept going north.

"Collin and Brady." He answered my silent question. "You'll meet everyone soon enough, don't worry."

"Is there any advice you want to give me… about the pack?" I asked.

He pretended to be in deep thought.

"Well if you want to talk about girls, don't go to Dad. He's useless. You can come to me or Harry instead… Uncle Paul and Brady can also provide good advice for you." He paused for a couple of seconds. "To be inside someone's mind can be intimidating at first but you need to go with the flow and learn how to read the information the others give you. It's also a very useful tool if you know how to use it."

"What do you mean?"

"Let's just say that the more you learn about your pack mates the less night patrols you'll have to run."

He was clearly talking about blackmail. Through the mind link he was able to get a few secrets from the other members of the pack and then all he had to do was ask for favours in return of his silence.

"You blackmail the others?"

"That's a nasty way to describe it, Isaac. We just reach friendly agreements, that's all. Besides, this is just an advice. It doesn't mean you have to follow it."

"I don't think I can follow it."

"You've always been so… straight." He commented. "So perfect… that's why Dad wants you to be the next alpha."

I decided not to go further into that subject besides we had reached our backyard and the sound of laugher had caught our attention.

"What the hell." I exclaimed entering the living room where Harry and Sophia were sitting down, side by side, laughing happily. On Sophia's lap rested a photo album.

Great. That's all I needed. Sophia watching pictures of my childhood.

"That's Isaac when he had to take Peter, the hamster to Dee's house. He cried for the rest of the day. He was twelve, can you believe that?"

"I was ten and I didn't cry." I glared towards my brother.

"Hey, you're back." He cheered. "Is everything okay?"

"Everything's great apart from you trying to make me look like an idiot." I told him.

"Come on Isaac, Sophia was bored and I thought she would like to see this."

At least Sophia had the decency of closing the album, which was actually good because they were reaching the pictures of my first time at the dentist. It was not one of my best moments. I still hate dentists. But if he was going to keep trying to humiliate me in front of Sophia, I could play that game too.

There were pretty nice pictures of the twins I could show her, like the one Mum took when Dad forced them to repaint the living room. Harry and Will were about twelve and they had used the paintball gun Uncle Paul had offered them on their birthday inside the house, colouring the living room's walls in red, green and yellow.

Even better I could show her the one they were sitting down, hiding behind Harry's bed blowing condoms (they thought it was balloons) they had snatched from our parent's bedroom. The twins were about eight or nine years old by then.

But as I planned getting even against Harry for making me look like an idiot, a piercing howl echoed in the Reservation and we all froze.
