Book I – The Third

13. A New Wolf

Sophia looked at me expectantly. Of course I had no idea what to tell her when she asked me why there were more wolves howling. She was suspicious and I couldn't blame her. About two hours ago she had heard those same howls outside our room in Brinnon and now, the same thing was happening here in La Push.

My brothers had left immediately after the howls had started. They knew what it meant. Because I was younger and had never patrolled or faced a vampire before, they convinced me to stay behind plus someone had to stay and watch over Sophia.

I wanted to be out there with them. My wolf was restless and anxious to hunt down our enemies but I didn't know exactly what was going on so I stayed indoors with Sophia. All I knew was that the whole pack minus my mother, Uncle Embry and Uncle Paul, were in the woods. It was weird but I had felt the moment my father had phased. Maybe it was because he was the alpha, maybe it was because he was my father, I didn't know for sure, but I had felt it.

And right now I could sense that the pack was going north. They were almost leaving our lands. They were fast and seemed to be pursuing something or someone. Dad and Uncle Seth had mentioned a nomad vampire in the area, maybe they were after him.

"Is this normal? To have wolves following you across the state?" Sophia's voice brought me back to reality.

"Nothing is normal here you know…" I tried to make a joke. Sophia rolled her eyes.

"And I thought my family was weird…" She muttered half amused. "So… your brother told me you went to the University when you were fifteen…"

"Yes."

"That's impressive."

"I guess… I'm not going back though…" I had my destiny fated that a long time, I just hadn't realized what it actually meant until now. And it meant that I would have to stay in La Push for many years. It meant that whatever Calleigh had to say to me, it would not make a difference now.

At least I won't have to go to Greenland and live alone. And maybe one day vampires will cease to come here and then I can plan my life again. Go back to Arizona, have a few more degrees, become a professor… or go to Pacific Beach and become a volunteer.

My fantasy was interrupted by the sound of a car pulling over outside my house. It was not my mother like I was expecting.

"You have a Mercedes?" Sophia asked watching the black car parking. I knew that car and I knew its owner however Dr. Cullen wasn't driving, my uncle was.

"It's not our car." I went to the door and ran outside to meet Uncle Embry who was carrying an unconscious Sarah in his arms.

"What happened?" I asked.

"She's fine. She fell asleep when we were landing." Uncle Embry explained. "Take her inside. Jay's in the backseat."

"You brought him here?" With Sophia inside I wasn't sure if having Jay there would be a good idea.

"It's an emergency. Paul joined the others already and I have to go too. Carlisle had to stay in the Austin. He's going to retrieve the blood samples they took from Jay and replace them by human blood otherwise everyone will be suspicious." Uncle Embry informed me.

"Does Sarah know what we are? Did she find out?"

"No. Jay didn't phase yet. Doctor Cullen gave him a mild tranquilizer but when he wakes up, Carlisle thinks nothing will be able to stop him from turning. So make sure he's not inside when that happens."

"But… I can't…" I warned. "He can't stay here. I can't take care of him."

"No one else can do it. Your father needs me. With some luck he'll be alright until we all get back."

"What do I do if he phases? Should I call Jason?"

"Try to calm him down and make sure no one sees him turning. Jason won't be able to help you much. He might help Jay later but not now."

"That might be a bit complicated. I'm not alone."

Uncle Embry saw Sophia who was staring at us by the window.

"She's pretty. I'm sure you'll figure something out, kid. Welcome to the pack and congratulations on your first assignment." He placed my sister on my arms and left.

When I walked inside, I braced myself for Sophia's questions but she only asked me if I needed help which I took gladly. I told her to prepare some food for Sarah and she obliged diligently. Then I went back to the car to get Jay and placed him on the living room's couch.

I was hoping that Jay would remain asleep until Dad and the others came back but I had no such luck. He was sweating and could barely stand. Before his condition could get worse I told Sophia I was going to take him home and asked her to watch over my sister. She consented and kept on preparing Sarah's food.

"Where are we going?" Jay managed to ask when I took him outside into the forest.

"Somewhere safe."

"What's happening to me?"

"The same thing that happened to me. It won't take long and it's not so bad."

"It hurts."

I hadn't experienced much pain but I guess we were all supposed to go through different experiences. I just had to make sure that Jay's wouldn't turn out to be too traumatizing.

"Sarah…" He whispered, clinging to my shoulder.

"She's fine. She's sleeping."

"I feel like I'm burning from the inside. What's wrong with me?"

"It's normal. Just keep calm, I'll help you."

That was a lie. Unfortunately I had no idea what I could do to help him.

"You're one of them now, aren't you?" Somehow his question sounded more like an accusation.

I didn't answer. I was considering what to tell him next. Should I tell him what we were? Should I warn him what he was about to become? Should I tell him the legends and let him figure things out on his own? Or should I just stay quiet and wait until he turned into a wolf?

My father had told me that most of the wolves couldn't control their emotions the first time they phased. That meant Jay could end up running away and I couldn't let that happen. He could even hurt someone.

"Listen to me Jay. After this your life is going to change, but you're not alone, okay? I'll be here, and Harry and Will too. You'll be fine. Do you remember the legends?"

Jay only made a whimpering sound.

"Do you remember?" I insisted.

"My head hurts and I feel sick. I'm going to throw up."

I lowered Jay into the floor and he got on his hands and knees. I could see his muscles trembling violently. I knew the feeling quite well and I also knew that in a few more minutes, he'd be a wolf so I decided to phase first, the problem was I had never done it deliberately.

Harry had taught me to phase back but no one had told me how to actually transform into the animal.

What if I can't phase anymore? What if this was a one-time thing?

I tried to keep myself calm and then my limbs expanded and I felt myself float. Everything was black for a while but then I opened my eyes and saw I was still in the same spot. My clothes were gone. I noticed that the fur on my right front leg was russet while on my left leg was light grey.

Then many things happened at the same time. I got in tune with the forest, with my surroundings and with my wolf and I saw what was happening many miles away. I could hear so many voices in my head that I had the impression they were all speaking at the same time, all shouting imperceptible words.

'Will! Harry! You're too close!' I could hear my father saying.

'How many are they?' Quil was asking to no one in particular.

'More than two, that's for sure.' Uncle Seth replied.

'I've lost him! I've lost the nomad!' Brady yelled. 'Damn it! I was so close! Collin have you seen where he went? Is he behind us?'

Brady and Collin had stopped running.

'I can't see anything! Everything's black!' Collin was about to panic and almost all of the wolves were now confused by the sudden darkness that had affect him. To prevent his friend from becoming an easy target, Brady ran towards Collin and suddenly he too was blind.

'Jake! We can't see a damn thing!'

'Seth? Your position?' My father ordered.

'On your left, two minutes ahead.'

'Can you smell this?'

'Is it the nomad?' Uncle Seth seemed confused.

'No. It's the Volturi!' Sam's voice echoed.

'How many?' Dad asked.

'Two… no… three…' Sam hesitated.

'Four. There are four.' Uncle Seth replied.

'Plus the nomad.' Uncle Paul recalled.

'Where are the Cullens?' Asked Sam. 'Weren't they supposed to assist us?'

'Northwest. They're going to close their way around the leeches.' Embry informed.

'Jared… I saw something on your right. Go check it out and make sure Paul and Quil are flanking you.' Dad ordered. 'Harry! William! You stay with me. Seth, go check on Brady and Collin.'

'Isaac! What the hell is happening?' Jay's scream made me aware of what was happening. He had finally phased and apparently he was the only other wolf who was aware of my thoughts. My father and the rest of the pack didn't seem able to feel our presence.

'Jay, stay calm.'

And that was exactly the opposite of what Jay did. He panicked and made me almost panic too. I had to gather all of my wits to keep myself focused on showing him what was happening without making him feel even more fear.

He was scared. Of course he would be scared. To become a giant wolf was something that didn't happen to most people and Jay had probably never imagined it could be possible. How could he? Monsters aren't supposed to be real. History is already packed with individuals that ended up becoming real monsters: people who ordered the execution of an entire population, people who murdered innocents in cold blood, people who let women and children die of hunger… the world is already messed up without the supernatural beings in the mix.

But now, here we were, trapped in bodies that weren't ours, bodies of huge wolves, of beings that we never dreamed existed. So I guess Jay did have the right to react like that. A normal person would definitely freak out after being thrown into the middle of this madness. A normal person would think of this as a nightmare or the product of a very powerful drug.

Fortunately when I phased I had been able to remember the stories I was told when I was younger. Besides I had time to prepare myself to embrace this weird reality while Jay had been sucked into this without any kind of warning.

I watched him growl and give a few uncertain and disorientated steps towards me. I heard his mental confusion and his paranoia. And then, I knew what to do. I projected all of the memories of when I was a kid and Granddad Billy used to tell me the stories of our people and the brave warrior spirits who protected us.

That spiked Jay's curiosity and he was finally able to focus on something else other than his fear.

'I know it sounds completely crazy. Trust me. I've felt the same.' I told him sincerely.

'So the legends are true… we are wolves and we have to kill the Cold Ones. That's it, right?' He asked finally understanding what my memories had meant.

'Basically.'

'How?'

'How what?'

'Your father is a wolf. Your brothers are wolves too… it's a family thing, isn't it?'

'Yes.'

'What about me? How can I be a… wolf too?'

Jay didn't know about his father and honestly I didn't know if I should be the one breaking the news to him. But there was no turning back now. I couldn't simply ignore his question.

'My father said that the gene is passed on from father to son. I'm still trying to learn more things about this gene and our… condition. There are many things about us and the pack that I don't fully understand but with time…'

'So my father is a wolf too? That's not possible, I would've noticed.'

'He was. He's not anymore.'

'So we can stop?'

'I guess so.'

He felt relieved when I said that. But there was still something bothering him.

'How long are we going to be in these bodies? I feel weird, restless, on edge.'

'This form is not permanent Jay. We can change back to humans. Try to relax and think about something nice.'

Fifteen minutes later Jay was finally able to phase back. He was so confused when he hit the ground that he didn't notice my father coming behind him. With a well applied blow on the back of the neck, he knocked Jay out swiftly and ordered me to phase back too only I had no clothes with me. Noticing my discomfort, Dad took something from the hem of his shorts and tossed it over to me.

"Put that on and hurry up."

"What happened. Did you catch the vampire?" I asked him while I was dressing. If I could remember correctly the pack was chasing a vampire a few minutes ago.

"How do you…?"

"I could see you… I mean I could read your thoughts but I don't think you could read mine."

Dad was wrapping Jay in a blanket when I joined him.

"Things got complicated but we need to go now. Your mother and Calleigh are here."

"How do you know?"

"I always know when she's near." He said in a whisper. "We have to take him to Granddad's house. Jason is going to pick him up."

"Did something happen? Where are the others? Harry and Will?"

"Your brothers are fine. I asked them to take Brady and Collin home."

"Why?"

"It's a long story."

"We have time." I helped Dad to carry an unconscious Jay through the woods. "What happened to the vampire you were chasing?"

"He escaped."

"How?"

"We were attacked by another vampire when we were almost catching the nomad."

"So there are more?"

"There are at least four of them but these ones, we know who they are. They are powerful vampires and they definitely want something we just don't know what it is yet. As soon as we solve things out with Calleigh, we're having an emergency meeting at the Cullens to learn what's going on. I'm sure Edward will be able to fill us in."

"Where's the rest of the pack?" I asked. "Brady and Collin were injured, weren't they?"

"I'll explain later. It's complicated."

Why would it be complicated to talk about an injury? Why was he so evasive about his answers?

"So… what happens now? I mean about Jay."

"I don't have time to worry about Jay right now that's why I'm taking him to his father. Jason will talk to him when he wakes up. Denis will be nearby to make sure Jay doesn't hurt anyone."

"I told him about the legends."

"You did?"

"I had to tell him something to make him calm down."

"You did well, Isaac. It was never my intention to leave you alone with Jay. I'm sorry we weren't able to help you."

Granddad was waiting for us by the door. He had the couch prepared for Jay and some clean clothes for us. If ripping off clothes was going to become a habit, I was going to have to find a job to buy new ones every week.

"What's going on?" Granddad asked sounding alarmed.

"I sent Paul to pick up Caleb." Dad said. Caleb Lowrey was a deputy officer and he worked in Forks Police Department. "Seth found two bodies. Two girls they're right outside our lands. The police will ask questions, so we need Caleb."

"Are they the girls who were missing?"

"We don't know yet. But they were definitely attacked by a leech." Dad explained. "Isaac? Are you ready?"

I had just finished changing clothes in one of the rooms. Dad put his tennis shoes on and glanced over at Jay.

"Jason will be here in about five minutes. Tell him to go easy on the boy."

Granddad Billy nodded and when I was heading for the door he grabbed my wrist and smiled.

"You're going to be a great alpha, Isaac." He said with conviction. "I'm proud of you kid."

"Thanks. This is still new to me granddad, but I promise I'll try my best."

"I know you will." He let me go then.

We reached our house within minutes. Mum joined us in the kitchen one second after we went through the back door. She ran straight towards me and hugged me so tightly I almost choked.

"I'm so sorry you have to go through this, Isaac. We should've told you sooner but we were so scared… I'm so glad you're not a werewolf. I hope you can forgive us…"

"I'm okay with that Mum, seriously. But I need some air."

"Sorry…" She let me go and then she circled me to see if I was hurt.

"I'm fine too, honey. Thanks for asking." Dad muttered and she simply rolled her eyes not looking at him.

"I'm fine, mum. I didn't even participate in the hunting."

"What hunting?" She turned to face my father and that was when I realized she had no idea what was going on.

"Brady and Collin found the nomad's tracks and the pack was mobilized." He informed. "Isaac stayed here with Jay, who is now a wolf too."

"Jay Morris? Jason's kid?"

Dad nodded. "Sarah was with him in Austin but Embry and Paul reached them on time."

"What a mess. Does she know?"

"No. And I don't want her to know unless it's strictly necessary." Dad stated. "First we'll need to take care of Isaac and Jay. They need to be introduced to the pack and the Council…" He hesitated. "My father told me what happened in the meeting. I had no idea Hal had so many supporters."

"Neither did I. But we'll talk about that later. The meeting was rescheduled for tomorrow evening."

Mum had always said that Hal White was an idiot but now there was a possibility of that idiot to be a part of the Tribal Council.

"You were talking about the hunting." Mum wanted details about that and so did I.

"The nomad escaped and we were attacked by Alec. At least I think it is Alec. Brady and Collin lost their eyesight and Jared and Quil couldn't hear or smell anything. Only Alec can do that."

"And Scarlett. She absorbed everyone's abilities, remember?" Mum asked.

"Aro would never allow Scarlett to leave Volterra. It has to be Alec."

"Does that mean Jane is here as well?"

I had no idea who those people were.

"Sam was closer to the vampire who attacked us when we lost the nomad and said he could only sense Alec. He didn't see him, but he recognized his scent. He said there were three more Volturi in the area but couldn't say who they were."

"Why are they here? Did they attack us on our lands? Because we have a deal with Aro. They can't come here unannounced and they can't hurt us."

"We were outside our lands. We were almost near Neah Bay. The deal wasn't broken. Let's sort things out with your friend so we can go talk to Edward." Dad suggested. "Do you know what she wants?"

Mum nodded negatively.

"She said she would only talk when we had Isaac with us."

"Do you trust her?"

"Yes. Calleigh was a good friend when I lived in Gold Beach. She is a little bit weird but I don't think she's a threat."

Gold Beach. Sophia had mentioned that town. It was her mother's hometown.

"Okay. In that case, let's go talk to her."

Dad led us out of the kitchen and into the living room where Calleigh Felton was with Sophia. They both got up immediately. She looked like a decent person. I was expecting her to be more like Alice Cullen but she dressed normally and didn't use weird hats, which was quite a relief.

"I believe you're Isaac." She watched me intently with piercing green eyes.

I nodded.

"It's so nice to meet you at last." She smiled friendly. "You do look a lot like your father." She added glancing at the both of us. I noticed my father's smirk.

"Callie, we don't have much time…" Mum started. "Can you tell us why you called Isaac? Why did you want him to meet you in Port Angeles?"

"I told you we would meet again, do you remember that Leah?" Callie asked calmly. "I knew our lives were connected as soon as I met you but I only found out why when you left us."

"What are you talking about Callie?"

"I'm talking about your boy. Your third son… Everything is about him."

Upon hearing those words I felt a chill running through my spine and a single thought hit me.

Why the hell it's always me?
