Book I – The Third

22. Troublemakers

"Do you want to talk about it?" I asked walking inside Isaac's room. I found my younger brother sitting down on the bed staring at his own reflection on a mirror he had in his hands.

"Not really." He said. "Do we grow teeth?"

"What?"

"If I had lost a few teeth during my fight with EJ would they grow back?"

I shrugged. Isaac was such a nerd sometimes.

"I don't know but you can always ask Uncle Seth." I suggested. "How's your eye?"

Isaac put the mirror down so I could see that his eye was back to normal.

"I like our healing abilities. I didn't even have to put ice on it." He said. "Although it will be hard to explain to people who don't know the truth. No human heals this fast."

"That's why we avoid confrontations like this Isaac."

"He provoked me."

EJ was an idiot hands down. He took after Uncle Paul and from all of our cousins, he was the most impulsive. Aunt Rachel used to stay he was going through a difficult phase, but that was just her excuse for EJ's bad behavior.

My cousin's explosive temper began to show when he was just an infant. When he was four he decided he didn't want people to call him by his name: James Ephraim. Instead he wanted to be called EJ.

When he was five he decided he wanted a brother so he begged his parents to give him a sibling and when that didn't work, he ran away from home almost causing Aunt Rachel to have a nervous breakdown.

When he was six and after Daniel's birth, EJ decided that to have a baby brother wasn't as cool as he thought in the beginning and one afternoon when his parents weren't looking he took Danny and offered him to our teacher at school because she was always saying how much she loved children.

When he was seven he took Uncle Paul's gun to school to scare some of the older kids (fortunately the gun wasn't loaded). When he was eight he broke into our teacher's house to change his school report because he was going to flunk Math and English and Uncle Paul had promised him a new bike only if he didn't flunk anything.

When he was nine he almost caused Aunt Rachel to miscarriage when he climbed the highest tree in the reservation and jumped from the top. Fortunately Quil was passing by and heard Aunt Rachel's screams so he was able to catch EJ before he hit the floor. The list of the incidents caused by EJ's was long and it got more troubling as EJ grew up.

He was now twenty-four years old and the only person he respected was his father but even that was more out of fear than anything else. EJ had his own house now that he shared with three other guys. None of them was a role model. T-Rex was an ex-con (he had been in jail twice for selling drugs), his cousin Gavin was following his footsteps although he didn't have a criminal record yet, and Hitman had a restraining order against him that forbid him to get close to his ex-girlfriend whom he had hit several times in the past.

Aunt Rachel was worried that he could be using drugs too, but so far EJ was clean. She didn't know that the only reason he hadn't used drugs yet was because two years ago my father told EJ that if he ever touched the stuff his friends were selling, he would kill them all. EJ was smart enough not to take my dad's threat lightly.

"You need to understand that now you're stronger than an average human. You could've seriously hurt EJ."

"He shouldn't have said those things about me in front of Sophia. Why does he have to be so damn rude?"

"He's Uncle Paul's child." I laughed. "And actually… Will and I are somehow responsible for his attitude."

"Why?"

"EJ used to hang out with us when we were kids. You probably remember that."

"Sure. They're not good memories though. You used to terrorize me."

"Yeah… well… we were kids." I tried to apologize. "Anyways. When we phased we had to push him away and he resented us for that. The Council ordered us to have limited contact with our human friends because we could accidentally let anything about out secret slip away or lose control and phase in front of them. Things hadn't gone well when Ella found out so they thought it was better to take precautions."

"Ella knows?"

"Yes." I nodded. "That's why she lives in the Makah Reservation with Emily's parents. She's afraid of what we are."

"We can't have contact with humans?"

"Of course we can. But that contact must be limited to certain people and certain occasions. Once you get to control the wolf inside of you, you can be with humans all you want."

"But you didn't."

"Like I said… EJ was really angry with us and when we tried to reconcile, he didn't accept our friendship. He said he didn't need us and that he had new friends so we left him alone."

I could tell Isaac was starting to feel guilty about having hurt EJ.

"Should I apologize?" He finally asked me.

"Do you want to?"

"He said I was gay."

"I know."

Isaac frowned.

"He's like me though." My brother whispered. "Everyone's hiding secrets from him and he probably feels lonely and misplaced."

As I predicted Isaac would apologize to EJ early the next morning. Fortunately he hadn't physically hurt our cousin that much because dad and Uncle Seth ended the argument quickly enough. Isaac had a black eye, EJ a bloody nose and a bruised ego for having his ass kicked by a 17-year old kid.

"If you go talk to EJ tomorrow, be sure to take someone with you."

Isaac nodded.

"Now let's go talk to mum and dad. They're waiting for us."

"And Sarah?"

"She's in her bedroom with Sophia."

"I should apologize to her as well. I ruined her party and her birthday cake."

"She said her birthday was ruined long before your fight with EJ, so chill out." I said. "And don't mention anything about Jay to mum and dad. Let me do the talking, okay?"

"Okay."

I could tell Isaac was apprehensive but after the stunt he had pulled about thirty minutes ago, he would have to face the music sooner or later. William and I had listened to many lectures so now we were didn't feel nervous anymore.

After the fight between Isaac and EJ my parents decided to call off Sarah's party. A few presents were left on the living room's couch, and all the guests left quietly. All except for EJ who had to be taken by his father and Will, and Callie and Sophia who were invited to stay over dinner.

Mum and dad were waiting for us in the kitchen, both drinking coffee while Callie was sitting down on the table, with a huge cup of green tea in front of her.

"Don't worry about me. I already know what you are." She said and my parents nodded.

"What in the name of the Spirits possessed you Isaac Seth Clearwater Black?"

I had never heard mum call any of us by our full names which meant that she was truly pissed. And it was weird because usually mum was never angry with Isaac.

"I'm sorry." He apologized. "I never meant to ruin Sarah's birthday party."

"This is not just about you ruining your sister's party. It's about you attacking your own cousin in public!" She practically yelled. "You could have phased! Sarah and JJ were in that room! And all the other kids!"

"I would never phase near them." Isaac assured. But there was no way he could be one hundred per cent sure that wouldn't happen.

"That's what Sam thought and guess what? He almost killed Emily!"

"Leah… Calm down." Our father spoke calmly, which was very unlike him. Usually whenever we did something wrong he went in for the kill. "Let Isaac explain himself."

But Isaac remained in silence. I guess he didn't want to admit that he had attacked EJ because he liked Sophia.

"EJ provoked him." I decided to help him out.

I wasn't a lie. The first time Isaac noted EJ hitting on Sophia he went to speak to our cousin and he used a diplomatic speech with him. He asked EJ to leave Sophia alone since she was a special guest of our family and should be treated with respect. He also reminded EJ that he shouldn't be hitting on a girl because he already had a girlfriend even though no one knew who she was. EJ was surprised with Isaac's request and initially he did leave Sophia alone. However when we were about to sing 'Happy Birthday' he stood right next to Sophia and he held her by the waist, which was a clear sign of provocation. And in that moment Isaac lost his patience.

He warned EJ again to no avail and without caring who was there listening, my cousin questioned Isaac's sexual orientation. There was no secret in La Push that Isaac wasn't very popular with the girls, and apparently during college, he hadn't dated anyone either. That alone didn't mean he was gay but it was enough for people to wonder.

After that rude comment, Isaac lost it and attacked EJ. The table and Sarah's cake were completely destroyed and the living room almost turned into a war scene. Thanks to dad and Uncle Seth's quick intervention, we managed to keep the rest of our furniture intact.

"And now that his wolf has awoken, Isaac reacted more violently than usual." I added.

"EJ provoked you?" Mum asked.

"Yes. He said I was gay." Isaac looked at me and muttered a 'thanks' before speaking again. "It won't happen again. I will go apologize in the morning to EJ and Aunt Rachel."

"Isaac, you're now probably twice as strong as a normal person. You can't hit people like you did today. Our secret must remain a secret and that means we need to keep a low profile." Dad explained. "Our physical appearance is already too suspicious, we don't need people to suspect something's wrong about us."

"I know. I'm sorry."

"It's important that you take responsibility for your mistakes and it's even more important that you never repeat those mistakes. From now on you're not just a regular teenager, you're not a college student anymore, and you're not just our son. You're a wolf now, a protector and a future leader of the pack. Your body doesn't belong only to you anymore, it belongs to a warrior spirit that you need to learn to control, and you have to live in harmony with the wolf inside you." A long time ago, Will and I had listened to a similar speech on the day we were officially presented to the pack. "It's not easy to be a protector, but you won't be alone, you'll have the whole pack backing you up. Your life won't be the same, and you won't be able to live the life you wanted when you first went to college, but that doesn't mean your life won't be better. In the beginning it will be complicated, you'll have to lie and keep secrets but every time you save a life you'll know that every lie, every sacrifice were worth it."

"We need you to be strong, brave and mostly, we need you to be responsible." Mum added.

Isaac nodded in agreement.

"Tomorrow morning you begin your training with Embry." Dad announced. "You will train here for six months. Then you will go to Astoria to live with Callie and her family. Until then you need to prove to me that you can control yourself or I won't allow you to go."

My brother opened his mouth to speak but I beat him to it.

"Astoria?" I asked surprised. When William and I joined the pack officially no one wanted us to patrol alone much less going to another state on our own. So how could dad accept to send Isaac there under these circumstances? Why was my brother going to live with this woman and her family? "Isaac just phased. Why is he going away?"

My brother had been away from our family in the last three years and now that he was finally home and he finally knew the truth, dad was sending him away again. I didn't understand and I certainly didn't approve.

"He's going to be there to protect me." Callie said. "I'm sorry that I will take him away from you again but I'll make sure to pay this debt to your family the best way I can."

I still didn't get it. Why did Callie need protection?

Noticing that Isaac and I were at a loss, mum decided to give us some explanation.

"Callie can see the future like Alice. And she saw a vampire killing her, she also believes that Isaac is the only one who can save her so… he'll go to Astoria to keep an eye on Callie and make sure she's not killed by any leech." Mum said. "It's not like he's moving to the other side of the world." She added showing us half a smile. Deep down I guess she wasn't thrilled about sending Isaac to another state.

"You can visit him whenever you like and he can come here whenever he wishes." Callie clarified. "I don't want to keep you apart."

"Callie also accepted to welcome more of us at her place in case we don't feel comfortable enough to let Isaac go alone." Dad informed. "If you or Will want, you can always join Isaac there."

I nodded. This kind of mission wasn't common but a long time ago the pack had done the same for Bella when she was still a human girl because there was a leech trying to kill her. Through the pack's memories I had learned that Bella had been personally protected by several wolves and that the pack had done a truce with the Cullens so that Bella could escape to the vampire that was after her. Luckily Bella lived in Forks, but Callie didn't.

However, the fact that Callie lived miles away from La Push didn't mean we could simply turn our back on her. She needed protection and it was our job to provide it. Still, Isaac seemed as surprised as I was.

I guess he had expected to receive some kind of a punishment and instead he was being chosen to carry out a mission. There were, of course, many details about Isaac's assignment to revise with the pack and to discuss with the Council.

"Are you up for this son?" Dad asked Isaac who nodded affirmatively.

Of course he is. I thought. Going to Astoria means he'll get to spend more time with Sophia.

"Okay. Until then, you have to promise me you won't attack anyone else." Mum asked him.

"I won't." He promised solemnly.

We sighed deeply in relief. Things hadn't worked out so bad after all. However when we were about to leave the kitchen, dad coughed and called us again.

"We're not over yet, boys. I still need to ask a few more things." He said. "So which one of you is going to tell me what happened to my car? Or did you think I wouldn't notice?"

We gulped. As the older sibling I should take the blame and take Isaac off the hook, after all he had only done what I had ordered him to do. But I really didn't need to get into more trouble after having beaten a priest this afternoon.

Isaac was looking at me with pleading eyes and I was trying to find a safe way out of that mess when Sarah barged into the kitchen, crying her eyes out with her cell phone in her hands. She trembled, wiped her tears with the palm of her left hand and stood between Isaac and I.

"They went to get me and Isaac hit Jerry's car." She confessed leaving both of us completely shocked. We had agreed not to tell anything to anyone and here she was telling our parents the truth.

"Get you?" Dad raised his eyebrows, still unconvinced.

"I got married today." She announced defiantly. Dad stood frozen and mum spilled the coffee she had in her cup. Isaac and I were still in shock. "I went to a church in Cape Flattery Road and got married to the man I love." Sarah held her hand showing the silver wedding ring Jay had given her.

Several seconds passed until dad was finally able to react.

"Isaac, get me Jerry Cameron." He ordered in a deep commando voice. "Now!" He bellowed when Isaac didn't move.

"Jerry has nothing to do with this." Sarah informed. "I'm married to…"

"Don't do that." I whispered to her.

"To Jay Morris." She finished.

I saw dad holding back his anger to prevent phasing inside our kitchen and mum gripping her cup so hard she almost broke it.

Now the shit had just hit the fan.
