Book II – The Protector

26. New Blood

It had been a weird morning and it was bound to turn even weirder. Alice and Jasper had picked me up early morning as planned. Bruno was with them. Apparently he had insisted in travelling with me, which didn't make feel that good. The other Cullens had gone on ahead. Esme had called Carlisle at dawn to tell her husband that Season had a quiet night and that she was improving. As soon as her blood pressure was stable, the doctor would allow her to go home.

During the car ride, Bruno had asked me to model for him about a hundred times. He said that Emmett was the only person he wanted to use as a nude model, so I could keep my clothes on if I accepted his proposal. He even said he'd pay me. I still refused.

When we arrived, Carlisle took us upstairs to Season's room. She was still asleep. Edward explained us that they didn't know exactly how Season's power worked.

"I was with her here in this room when she woke up and I still have my ability. So it's obvious she can't take away our powers by just staying near us. That means we have to be in contact with her… maybe it's just a touch or… a bite. Edward touched her when he was taking the venom out of her body so that probably means… she has to be bitten."

When Alice said that I couldn't supress a deep growl. That was out of question. I was not going to allow it. Season had been bitten already and she had hardly survived. I was not going to let anyone else bit her no matter the circumstances.

Edward knew what I was thinking and he seemed to agree with me. And fortunately he had another theory too.

"I think a touch is all it takes but I believe she has to be conscious. When I touched her she was nearly dead. So we're going to wait until she wakes up and then Bruno will test our theory by merely touching her."

I agreed with his plan.

And we waited.

Esme called us forty minutes later. She was finally waking up and when she finally did, she asked for water. Bruno took her the glass and when their fingers brushed he stood there frozen, completely out.

Season drank the water without noticing what was going on and when she finished she asked for more. She was still groggy so she didn't notice Bruno's weird clothes and hairstyle or the rest of the Cullens who were all inside the bedroom watching closely.

While Esme was pouring more water into the glass, Carlisle and the others pulled Bruno out of the room and into the hallway.

When Bruno finally recovered he said that his ability to feel what other people were feeling was gone. Edward was right. Season had a power that she could only use when conscious: she could erase vampires' abilities with her touch.

Now we were all sitting together in Alice's new house's living room. During the last ten minutes Bruno had tried to pick up our emotions just to be sure his ability was really gone.

"Nothing." He smiled sitting down between Alice and Bella. "I feel absolutely nothing. I can't even describe how awesome it is."

At least someone seems happy. I thought. I had accepted that this weird leech was not so bad. I mean compared to the Volturi the guy was a freaking saint. He fed on blood sold on the black market and didn't attack people. It was still disgusting but it was morally acceptable. Still I was not that interested about him losing his power. I was a lot more preoccupied about the girl upstairs who just seemed to have turned into a trouble magnet.

"She reminds me of Bella when she was a human." Edward said reading my thoughts.

Without the sick obsession to turn into a vampire. I pointed out mentally and he grimaced.

"What are you talking about?" Bella asked.

"You used to be a trouble magnet, remember?" Edward smiled sweetly at his wife.

"Well, that's because I met you." She shot back.

"That's all pretty nice guys but… what now? What's going to happen to her?" I questioned.

"I'm afraid this is worse than we expected." Alice confessed. "If she were like Scarlett I'm pretty sure Aro would do anything to keep her. Human or vampire, he would have a purpose for her… but she's not like Scarlett. She's her opposite."

"While Scarlett is a collector, Season is an eraser." Jasper explained. "One absorbs all powers, the other erases them permanently."

"That means Aro will not be pleased when he finds out." Carlisle said. "She's his worst nightmare. She can take away what he loves the most with only one touch. So when he finds her, he'll kill her."

"She's not dangerous." I pointed out. "I mean if they leave her alone, she won't do anything to them. She doesn't know them. She doesn't even know about their existence."

"Of course she's dangerous, Harry. She can be used against the Volturi. Aro will not allow anyone to have such a weapon ready to be used against his clan. They will try to kill her no matter what." Alice said. "And because she's still human, she'll be an easy target."

"But first they have to find her, right? And since Gustaf doesn't have his tracking ability anymore, we can fabricate some story to make them believe she died." I suggested. If they saw a graveyard tomb with Season's name on it, maybe they would just quit searching for her.

"Gustaf doesn't have his ability but he tasted her blood. That means he can feel her scent miles away. He'll know she's alive and well." Edward took Bella's hand in his and kissed it lightly. "It's almost as effective as when you meet your cantante."

Great. So basically they were saying the Volturi would be able to find Season no matter where she was.

"Yes. That's true." Edward confirmed. "They will find her and when Aro realizes what she does, he'll kill her."

"Then we kill Gustaf first." I stated. All of them exchanged a look.

"You'd start a war, Harry. A war that can end badly for the pack. Your numbers are smaller now. Even with Isaac and Jay, you're not enough to face the Volturi and we'll not be much of a help either in case Aro summons his new army."

"What are you saying?" I questioned completely dumbfounded. Were they suggesting we should just abandon Season?

"No. We're not suggesting you should abandon her. We know you'd never do that. It's in your nature to protect people regardless of the circumstances. All we're saying is that this is a very complicated situation and that we might have to resort to extreme measures to solve it." Edward clarified.

"Killing Gustaf would probably end the problem." Emmett supported my idea. "But I don't believe it can be done now. When he reaches Volterra he'll be safer than the President of the US inside the White House."

"Forging her death will also be ineffective." I said. "What does that leave us, then? I'm mean, she can't run and she can't hide. That means she's condemned, right?"

"Like we said, trying to make them believe she's dead won't work because Gustaf will know she's still alive, but we can try to hide her scent so they won't find her." Carlisle announced.

"How?" I asked.

"Blood." Bruno replied. "Blood is the only way."

"Blood?" I was at a loss. "Season's blood scent will guide Gustaf and the Volturi to her, so how can blood be the solution to hide her scent?"

"Bruno meant new blood." Carlisle clarified.

"How can you do that?" I was not super smart like Isaac but I knew pretty well that you can't change your blood type just like that.

"Actually, you can." Edward said. "A group of scientists have discovered that a particular type of enzyme can cut away antigens in blood types A and B, to make them more like type O which is considered the universal blood type, but that's a difficult medical procedure and I don't think we can do that without Season's approval so… there's only one other way."

I had no idea how to get someone to change blood types so I had to wait for their explanation.

"Women can create life, and that life has a new blood type that will camouflage her blood scent. Besides, given the fact that you're a… giant dog, I believe that the blood of a child conceived by you will be able to camouflage her blood scent and when she's pregnant." Bruno said with a confident smile.

I was pretty much speechless after that. I knew this morning was going to be a lot weirder since the moment I had walked inside Alice's car, but this was total and complete madness. They were actually saying that in order to save Season and prevent her to be found and killed by the Volturi, I would have to have a baby with her because my blood scent… or the baby's blood scent would camouflage hers and the leeches wouldn't be able to find her.

"I know how it sounds." Edward admitted.

"You're all insane." I muttered. I couldn't find any other words to express myself in that moment.

"Fatherhood is a great deal but let's face it kid… there's no other way you'll be able to save your girlfriend. I've seen the Volturi in action twice and they have no mercy, no compassion… they're lethal." Bruno said.

"Why the hell are you still here?" I asked.

"I have nothing else to do. I've finished my latest project two days ago." He shrugged indifferently. "I'm also kind of expecting you to reconsider my proposal about a photoshoot session. You can bring your girlfriend too. I can do an amazing photoshoot of you together so you can show your child in a few years. What do you say?"

I got up and glared at him.

"First, I'm not having any photoshoot. Second, she's not my girlfriend, okay!?"

"She's not?" Bruno seemed surprised. "But you've been worried sick about her. I could feel it when we came here this morning."

I felt myself blush a little.

"I was worried because she's a decent girl who didn't deserve this!"

"Are you sure? Your feelings were so strong…" He raised his eyebrows. "Anyways, if your desire is to save her, you may have to consider that she has to have your kid soon." He hesitated a brief moment before continuing. "I don't see what the big deal is when you clearly like her."

"I don't like her!" I turned to Carlisle and the others then. "Does he really have to be here? This business has nothing to do with him."

"Fine…" Bruno got up from his seat. "I have to get going anyways. I have a date this afternoon."

"A date?" Emmett teased.

"Yes, a date, Emmett. It's our third date actually and I'm quite convinced he's the one."

"You're not dating a human, are you?" Bella asked.

"Of course not. Humans are too fragile to date and I don't like the idea of losing control and… well ending up having a meal instead of a date. Besides human's life span is limited."

"Where did you meet him?" Alice asked curiously.

"Online. He is so my type."

"I'm glad you're moving on, BB Ray." Rosalie commented. "Tim was an asshole. I've never liked him."

"Rocky is nothing like Tim, trust me. He's quiet and loves fashion. He's from North Dakota and he's only five years younger than me."

"Good for you then." Emmett patted Bruno in the back. "It was about time you forgot about that idiot."

"I guess." He smiled. "Well… thanks for what you did for me. I'm sure I'll see you soon. After all if Rocky proposes, I'll need a best man." He glanced over to Emmett who nodded.

Bruno said goodbye and took a few steps towards the front door before stopping abruptly. He then walked in my direction with a resolute look on his androgynous face. I crossed my arms over my chest, feeling rather uncomfortable with the sudden lack of space between us. I thought he was going to try and convince me to be his model one last time but I was wrong.

"If you decide that you want to play… you know… in the other league just give me a call. Despite your intense smell of a wet dog, I have a couple of friends who definitely wouldn't mind to have a ride with you." He looked amused. "You have no idea the fetishes a vampire can have." He winked at me, blew me a kiss and was gone in a flash.

Despite keeping his voice to the lowest, everyone in the living room heard Bruno's words. Edward and Jasper coughed trying to hide their laugh, Emmett however was not so subtle.

I have no idea what shocked me the most: if the fact that a damn leech had just insinuated that I was gay, or the fact that there were actually vampires having fetishes about wolves.

"The next time that idiot is around I'm going to kill him and I don't care if he's your friend!" I warned. "And stop laughing, Emmett! It's not funny!"

"That was fucking hilarious, Harry." Emmett said between laughs. "I'd love to see you playing in the other league." He mocked me.

Great. Now he's never going to let me live down to it.

I took a deep breath before knocking on the door in front of me. This was a point of no return. After this, everything would change.

In the last hour the Cullens and I had discussed what to do about Season. The fact that her life was in danger because she had an ability that could turn the Volturi into normal vampires instead of lethal weapons, was our main problem.

We had to try and ensure that Aro and the other leeches would not hurt her. Unfortunately we hadn't reached a verdict yet. Escaping the Volturi wasn't easy. Only her death would prevent them to come looking for her.

Hiding seemed to be the only way to save her, but even that had to be carefully planned. She couldn't stay in the Makah Reservation and surrounding area that was for sure. And even if we took her to La Push or someplace else, they would still be able to pick up her blood scent easily through Gustaf.

Carlisle had searched ways to camouflage blood scents and the most effective way was to add a new blood scent to Season. For that she needed to have blood transfusions regularly or getting pregnant, preferably with a wolf's child. Apparently the blood of a wolf had a specific and intense odour that was able to hide Season's scent.

Season's blood was type B. For her to have blood transfusions in order to change her blood type to O, Carlisle would have to come up with a medical reason, credible enough, to convince Season she really needed treatment. However there was no guarantee that Season would actually believe in Carlisle's fabricated story and even if she did, that meant the Cullens would be forced to meet her on a frequent basis and it was dangerous for them to be associated with Season.

If Aro ever found out about their involvement in this, they could be charged of treason like they had been years ago.

For that reason, the eight vampires thought that a pregnancy was the best way to ensure her safety. And that's where we disagreed. Maybe it was not a big deal for them since they were frozen in time and vampire women could not conceive but Season was a human girl with a life ahead of her and probably had no intention of being a mother anytime soon. Besides a baby should be born out of love and not out of necessity.

Since I was going to pretend to be her boyfriend in order to stay close to her and protect her, they all thought that it was only natural I should be the father of her child. I refused. After reading my mind Edward understood my point of view and explained it to the others and in the end the pregnancy option was discarded but only temporarily.

"We'll try to think of another way to help her but if we can't find any, this will be our only option. Either she gets pregnant or she dies at the Volturi's hands. We can opt by an artificial insemination procedure and if you don't want to be a part of it, there are other wolves who can be donors."

Those had been Carlisle's final words before I left to the Makah Reservation to meet with Hannah Marsh. In less than two hours I was going to bring Season home but first I need to consult with her cousin.

Sighing deeply, I knocked the wooden door in front of me and waited. I could hear the voices of six different people inside the small house. One adult and five children.

I knocked again and seconds later a girl that had a few resemblances with Season opened the door.

"Hi." I greeted. "Can I speak to Hannah Marsh?"

The girl looked intently at me and nodded. "Hannah! There's a guy here wanting to talk to you."

Hannah appeared then, dressed with a green robe, and carrying a cup of black coffee. She was the average Native-American woman. She had long dark hair caught up in a braid and almond-shaped brown eyes.

"Look, I've told your boss I don't know where Declan is and I don't care. He left me three years ago and never contacted me, okay?"

I had no idea who Declan was but she seemed a bit nervous which meant he was not good news.

"I'm here to talk to you about your cousin Season." I announced.

"Season?" She inquired suspiciously. "Isn't she at work?"

"Hannah! Tamsyn is throwing up again!" A voice came from the living room.

"Can't we talk later?" Hannah asked me.

"Actually, no."

"Okay. Wait here. I have to check on my daughter first."

I nodded. Leaving the door half-open, Hannah ran inside and fifteen minutes later she came back with two children, a boy and a girl, following her. They both had school bags.

"Don't forget to tell Mrs. Gilmore that Tamsyn and Nyla are sick, alright?" She instructed. "And before you go to classes go to the bakery and ask Owen for some lunch. Tell him, I'll pay him tomorrow."

Both kids passed me by and I couldn't help myself. I took twenty dollars out of my pocket and gave them to the boy.

"Get yourselves a nice lunch, alright?" I told him.

The boy looked at his cousin before accepting the money and when she nodded, he thanked me and they both left hurriedly.

"You didn't have to do that."

"They're Season's siblings, aren't they?"

"Yes. Why? Who the hell are you? Did Tom send you?"

"Relax. I don't know any Tom. I just came here because I really need to talk to you about your cousin."

"Right… Come inside."

Alice had mentioned Season lived in small house but I never thought it was that small. It consisted in an ample living room with a kitchen in one corner, a tiny bedroom and a bathroom that didn't even have a bathtub. All of the divisions in the house were a mess. There were clothes around the floor and on the sofas, there was a table with leftovers and some medicine near the stove and two buckets filled with water right next to the bathroom's door.

In one of the sofas, two little girls were lying down, covered with a blanket, watching the cartoons in an old television set.

"Are they okay?" I asked.

"It's just a cold." She said sitting down on a chair and pouring more coffee into her mug. "You want some?"

"No, thanks."

"Okay… so what about Season?"

"Well… I suppose you don't know what happened to her a night ago, right?"

"She said she'd be doing a double shift. Why? What's going on? Where's Season?" She was worried now. I could feel it.

"She had an accident." I lowered my voice so that the two young girls wouldn't listen.

"Oh my God! An accident?" Hannah got up and started to pace nervously. "Is she okay? Is she alive?"

"She's alive and she'll be fine. She hit her head pretty hard and has been a little bit confused during the last few hours… she kind of lost her memory or some parts of her memory… but she'll be alright."

Hannah sighed. "Oh my God. You scared me. I almost thought she had died… just like my parents and Uncle Aiden."

"Sorry."

"Is she in the hospital? Shit… I don't have any money left to pay the hospital…"

"She's not in the hospital. I took her to my friend's house because her injuries are not that serious. I decided to come and speak to you because I'm going to stay around to take care of her for a while and I thought you and I should meet."

"You're going to take care of her? What are you talking about? Who are you?"

Here goes nothing.

"I'm her boyfriend." I replied. "Nice to meet you Hannah. My name is Harrison Black."
