Book III – The Challenger

39. Brother in, Brother out
"You know why dad did that, don't you?" Isaac asked joining me at our father's auto shop that evening.
"Of course I know. Because he's a damn hypocrite. And if you're here to defend him you're wasting your breath, little brother."
"I'm not defending him. I'm just trying to get you to understand."
"Look, I've accepted the punishment, isn't that enough?"
"This isn't a punishment."
"Yes, it is!"
I was being punished for putting my cousin unconscious. I had explained everyone that EJ had threatened to kill me and was preparing himself to leave La Push. Other wolves confirmed my story but still, dad decided to apply me a punishment.
Stupid hypocrite.
"I admit that sometimes I overreact, I even admit that I have a special temper but I was soft with EJ. I was careful not to hurt him and this is what I get? Come on…" I complained. "He deserved a lot worse, you know?" I added, pouring some water over the car that was in front of me. Then I picked up the sponge and started cleaning the red automobile. It belonged to some fancy lady from Forks. Dad always ordered someone to wash his clients' cars before returning the vehicle to its owner once it was ready.
"EJ's having a rough time, Will. He has no idea what's going on. I think he doesn't even know who he is anymore."
"He wanted to leave La Push. I did what I did because I had to stop him. We couldn't let him on the loose."
"And dad thanked you for that. He said you did a great job."
"And then he ordered me to wash and deliver three cars. How fucking generous of him! This is Danny's job, not mine!"
"Danny's not ready to resume his daily life. You know that as well as I do. Dad can't risk him morphing in front of clients."
"First he tells me I did well and that he's proud of how I handled the situation, and then he punishes me!? What the fuck was that? I said I'd help fixing the Vacant House!" I kept complaining.
"Did you notice Aunt Rachel's face when she saw EJ knocked out? Dad had to act immediately to avoid more arguments. You know they're not on good terms ever since dad threatened to take EJ to the police three years ago."
I shrugged. I remembered that well enough to know that dad would do anything to keep Aunt Rachel happy. Back then, they didn't speak to each other for six months. Granddad Billy had to pretend he was sick to make them speak to each other again.
"So he punishes me to please Aunt Rachel? That sounds even worse."
"It's not that bad, Will. Here you can't walk around freely, no one comes to the auto shop except for dad and the others. Plus you're finally being helpful…"
"In that case why don't you start being helpful too?" I threw the sponge to my brother. "You can wash and deliver the cars. I've got better things to do."
"Like what?"
"I'm going to visit the Cullens and maybe later I'll drop by the Makah Reservation to check on Harry's girlfriend. She's not safe there with that fucking asshole around."
"I don't think that's a good idea."
"You've been appointed alpha not even two days ago and you're already trying to pass orders?"
"I'm not ordering anything. I'm just saying it's not a good idea because Harry was called to Port Angeles to the Criminal Division. Apparently Tom Harding is suing Harry for minor injuries that prevent him from working and financially support his family."
"What family?"
"He pays child support for two kids, plus he also has to take care of his mother and incapacitated brother-in-law."
"What the hell! Why wasn't I told about that?"
"You were with Uncle Paul in Neilton and then you got busy fighting with EJ." Isaac explained.
I was right after all. Dad hadn't sent Uncle Paul and me to Neilton by chance. He probably wanted to stop me from going to Port Angeles as well.
"Where's Harry now?" I growled.
"Still in Port Angeles."
"I have to see him."
"I know you're worried about him but you can't go there. You can make it worse. Besides, the Cullens are there too. They have everything covered. Rosalie called that officer girl you saved to testify on Harry's behalf. Luckily the appointed prosecutor to the case knows the girl's father and he said there's a good chance that Harry might leave jail today."
"What if something goes wrong? What if she doesn't show up?"
"Edward offered to go pick her up. She's going to be there on time for the final audience."
I kicked the water bucket that was close to my feet spilling all of the liquid on the floor.
"I'm so going to kick that motherfucker's ass!" I growled again thinking about a face-to-face with Tom Harding.
"Then you'll end up in jail too."
"I don't care! He ordered someone to kill Harry! He deserves a good lesson!"
"I agree… but…"
"I need to know who shot me." I cut my brother off.
"Alice has a name but she didn't tell us." Isaac told me.
Alice wouldn't say anything because she knew if she did, I'd find him and send him to nearest hospital or to the morgue.
"And quite frankly, in your current state, I think it's better if you don't know. You'll end up doing something stupid, like Harry did." My brother added. "You know it was actually Tom who ordered it… that's enough for now."
"No, it's not. If I find the person who shot me I can force him to testify against Tom and that will make things a lot easier."
"Alice will make sure that man pays for everything he's done… eventually."
"Alice is doing things her way, and that means it can take days. I know how she works. I want this over right now. Harry doesn't deserve to be in a cell."
Isaac and I locked gazes in that moment. My fiery brown eyes met his and I was surprised to find fire in his eyes too. He wanted to get Harry out as much as I did.
"Okay and what are you going to do about that?" He finally asked me.
xxxxxxxxxx
"You've got to be kidding me." My younger brother complained when he realised my plan. "I thought you were fooling around when you said we were coming to a... house with... girls."
"You didn't have to come. You could've stayed in La Push."
"Washing the cars you're supposed to be washing? No thanks, Will."
"In that case, just follow my lead and act as if this is not the first time you come into a place like this. These people know amateurs."
I left the car and Isaac followed me closely. Fortunately that area of the Makah Reservation wasn't too busy at that hour.
"What if someone recognises you? I mean, you said you were here before." Isaac asked me.
"I was inside the car the whole time. No one saw me."
"Why are we coming here anyways?"
"There's something I remember from when I fell right after being shot. At the time I didn't make much of it, but now..."
Isaac was still confused so I decided to explain better.
"I smelled perfume. And it was the same cheap perfume that I smelled right here a few nights ago. So... just like Tom, whoever shot me is a client here."
"And how are you going to find out his identity? Are you going to walk inside and ask the girl who wears that perfume who she slept with on the day you were shot?"
"It's a plan... but I don't think she'd like that approach. I have to be a little bit more discreet."
"Do you even know what 'discreet' means?"
"Shut up and do what I say."
I knocked three times before being welcomed by a middle-aged woman with way too many make-up and wearing probably the shortest dress I had ever seen. She ordered us to get inside and called the attention of the twelve young girls that were sitting in the living room. Some of them were reading, others were watching TV and one was painting her nails.
"Form a line girls. We have young clients. It's quite unusual to have clients at this hour but it's good for business. You're not from here are you?"
"We're from Montana. We're passing by and a good friend of mine told me about this... house. It happens that we have a couple of hours to spare."
"Your friend has good taste. So... an hour each?" She looked from me to my brother.
"Yeah. I guess..."
"Do you want full service or something less expensive?"
"Full service is fine."
"For our full package each of you can choose your girl. If you choose the same girl you can share her. If you don't want to share one of you will have to wait until the other is over but in that case, she's entitled to a thirty-minute break between clients."
"We won't choose the same girl." I said inspecting all the girls. They were barely dressed. One was a natural red hair, two others were blonde but the others were local girls with brown or black hair and golden skin.
Fortunately only one wore the perfume I was searching for. She lowered her eyes when I stopped in front of her.
"I'm sure February will take good care of you, Mr...?"
"Jacob... Solomon. But you can call me Jake."
Isaac shook his head when I said my fake name. Maybe I shouldn't have used my father's name, but in that house no one knew my father and I couldn't use my real name, right?
"What about you boy? Are you going to choose or what?" The woman asked Isaac.
My brother was livid. I was sure he had never thought about entering a place like that much less having to pick up a girl and go to a room alone with her. Actually, I could've told him to wait in the car but it was a lot funnier to have him there with me. The look of horror on his face was priceless.
"I think Zac likes the red hair girl, right?"
"August's our youngest and newest girl. She's still learning. Maybe it's better if he chooses October."
"No. It's fine. He'll take August. Right?"
Isaac nodded and we went upstairs with the girls.
"What am I supposed to do?" Isaac whispered nervously to me. Since I was the one who had questions to make to February, Isaac was free to do whatever he wanted with August.
"Have fun with her. I mean she's the hottest month of the year." I mocked him.
"Seriously William..."
"Be a man, Isaac. Show her a good time." Isaac sighed impatiently when I said that.
"I hate you!" He almost growled. "I don't want to do anything with this girl."
"Look... she's new and it looks like she's very young too so just show her that not all of us are pigs." I added.
I had suggested August for my brother's partner because she was the youngest girl in that house. She wouldn't be too suspicious or unhappy if Isaac didn't want to sleep with her. If he had chosen any other girl his lack of interest in sex would end up giving us away and the head mistress could start wondering about the real reasons of our presence there.
After all costumers went to that house with only one purpose.
A quick glance between us told me that Isaac had understood what I said because he was a lot calmer when he followed August inside the bedroom next to mine.
"I don't do blowjobs or anything that includes sticking objects inside my body, got it?" February announced once we were inside a rather naked bedroom. There was a large bed in the centre, a bedside table with a clock with a timer and a closet with two doors probably to keep clothes and sexual toys. I felt sorry for these girls. They shouldn't be forced to do this to be able to make a living.
"Damn, no TV?" I joked. She rolled her eyes.
"What? You need porn movies to get you in the mood?"
"Haha." I laughed sarcastically. "You're so funny."
She smiled and went over to the bedside table.
"I'm going to set the timer so you better start taking your clothes off. You paid an hour and it's an hour you'll get."
"You don't need to take you clothes off for what we're going to do."
"You want us to do it with my clothes on?" She asked me dumbfounded. "Guys are weirder and weirder these days..."
"Sit down. We need to talk."
"You paid almost ninety dollars to talk?"
"Yes."
"Are you a cop?"
"Do I look like a cop?"
"No, usually cops aren't this handsome."
I grinned. To hear a girl say that, even if she was the type of girl who had to satisfy clients with sex, was always a boost to my ego.
"Good. Now all I really need from you is a list of the men that required you services five days ago."
I only hoped it was a short list.
"We don't talk about our clients." She said. "It's against internal policy. Sorry."
"I'll give you an extra if you forget about the internal policy."
"How much?"
"Forty dollars."
"Fifty." She bargained.
"Fine. Fifty."
In the room next door, Isaac cursed. I had asked Isaac to lend me his savings and I had just spent 220 dollars in a visit to a local brothel. But if I could find the guy that Tom had hired to kill my brother, it would worth it.
"Now the list, please." I insisted.
"Why do you need that information if you're not a cop?" February asked suspiciously.
Because one of them tried to kill me. I was tempted to say.
"It's personal. But let's just say there's a debt involved."
"I don't need problems right now. I don't want to have anything to do with other people's debts."
"I won't mention your name. Besides, it's not what you think. I only want to repay a debt."
"What kind of debt?"
"I thought you said you don't want to get involved."
"Right… Okay, fine. I think that five days ago I received about seven or eight clients. Two-inch Tim, Leo, Zero, Hector Lovejoy, Grant, Fantastic Mike, Doug the Bug, and Bill Bull."
Thank the spirits she had a good memory.
"Which of these guys is friends with Tom Harding?"
"Tommy? What does this have to do with Tommy?"
"I'm in debt with Tom but to pay him back I need to talk to a friend of his."
"Does this has anything to do with the Marsh girl?"
"I don't know who you're talking about." I lied. "I don't know any Marsh girl."
"That bitch is messing with Tommy's head!"
"The business I have with Tom has nothing to do with a girl." I explained. And I wasn't lying. My business with Tom had to do with the fact that he had ordered someone to kill my brother. But that bastard had taken me for Harry and I was shot instead. "Now from that list who is friends with Tom Harding?" I repeated the question.
"Leo and Mike are his friends for since I can remember. They always come here together."
"Where can I find them?"
"Leo works in a carpentry outside Port Angeles and Mike spends his days in his fishing boat. He's always wasted so you won't get a decent conversation from him."
If Mike was always drinking he couldn't be the shooter. Drunken people are lousy shooters, and this guy had missed my heart by only a few inches. So it had to be Leo.
"Oh… there's Bill too." She added. "I mean, he's not friends with Tom but they went to the same class when they were kids. And they've been hanging around a lot more since last week."
"Okay. That's quite helpful. And where can I find Bill? I need a word with him."
I had two suspects to investigate. One of them was the man I was searching for. One of them would soon be inside a prison cell in my brother's place.
"That's impossible, Bill left for a couple of months. He said he had some businesses to attend on the east coast."
"That's our guy." Isaac whispered in the next room. As I expected, he was playing cards with August while listening to my conversation with February. "He's hiding his tracks. Ask her where he lives. We'll get him if we know where he's gone to."
The prosecutor was right. Harry would be a free man before dinner. We just had to find Bill Bull.
xxxxxxxxxx
"Do you have any idea what you've done, Will?" Rosalie exploded as soon as we got inside the room she had just rented for two hours in a small inn nearby the Port Angeles Criminal Division building.
Emmett grinned, Jasper shook his head in disbelief and Edward gave me that patronising look that screamed 'You blew it.' But I didn't care. Everything I was doing was for Harry.
"We could all be in La Push celebrating Harry's release as we speak! And now… we'll have to endure three more hours of interrogations and that was not on my plans!"
"You lack proof and witnesses. I got you all the proof you need and a witness that will testify against Tom." I countered. "You could show a little bit of appreciation."
"The guy is knocked out." Jasper said. "He won't do us any good if he can't speak."
"He'll wake up in a few minutes. Jay was a bit rough when Bill tried to bite his hand off." I explained briefly not wanting to go into the details.
"The point is… we didn't need him…" Rosalie pointed to the unconscious man that I had brought all the way from the state of Idaho to serve as a witness against Tom Harding.
Newport, Idaho was the place where Bill Bull was hiding and waiting for Tom's next orders. Luckily when we arrived he was already half-drunk so it was easy to convince him to travel with us to Port Angeles. However Bill sobered up during the ride and demanded answers. When we couldn't provide him with a convincing story, he attacked us inside my new car. I almost hit a truck but Jay and Danny were able to restrain him long enough for me to stop the car safely on the side of the road.
Then Bill tried to get out, Danny got hit with a punch in his family jewels, I was forced to help Isaac and Jay to hold Bill down and when he tried to bit Jay's hand off, Jay didn't even think twice and punched the lights out of the almost six-foot and one-hundred pound man we had captured.
He was unconscious ever since.
"Come on Rosie… the kid messed up again but he's only doing this for his brother which is kind of… lovely." Emmett mocked.
"The prosecutor was convinced, the jury was deliberating the sum to pay for his release on bail. A few more minutes and we'd have Harry back." Rosalie complained.
"Fine… but now we'll have Harry back for good and someone who can help us to put Tom in jail." I said.
"Do you really think he'll talk?" Rosalie asked unsure of Bill Bull's cooperation.
"Oh, I'm sure he will." I grinned. "I didn't ask Isaac to call Jay and Danny for nothing."
Bill 'Bull' Seahall could be considered a large and strong man and he probably didn't feel intimidated often but we were going to change that.
As soon as he woke up, he was going to be thrown into the wolves, literally. Four against one wasn't fair but it was necessary to show him we had the number advantage and if he didn't confess the truth, we would make his life a living hell. At least that was my plan.
"I'm sure your father doesn't know that you're here, right?" Edward asked. He knew my answer before I voiced it.
"Dad's busy right now. He has an auto shop to run and three cars to wash and deliver."
Edward laughed after reading my thoughts.
Before leaving La Push I had left a note for dad telling him that unfortunately I wouldn't be able to help in the auto shop for the rest of the day. I knew he would flip once he read the post-it I had left in the red Mercedes but right now I didn't give a shit because the most important thing to me was to free my brother from jail.
"Call your brother and the others back here." Rosalie ordered. "Someone has to watch this guy while I try to sort things out with the prosecutor."
"Can I speak to Harry?" I asked hopeful.
"Of course not! You're supposed to be in a coma, remember?" Rosalie snapped at me. "You're going to stay in here too. Just make sure this idiot turns himself in willingly." She said. "And make sure you don't hit him. If he goes to the judge covered in bruises they'll know he was coerced."
"And record everything he says once he's awake." Jasper added, following Rosalie into the hall. "We put a recorder under the bed."
"I'll contact Esme and Carlisle and ask them to finish the investigation on this guy. I'm sure Alice had already started digging up things about him but she probably didn't finish it." Edward announced.
"Where's Alice by the way? I thought she'd be here." I questioned.
"She's trying to tie some loose ends." He replied. I felt some hesitation in his voice but I wasn't able to keep the conversation because in that moment Isaac, Jay and Danny came back from a nearby supermarket with food for the four of us.
"Can you tell Harry I'm here and that I'm not leaving without him?" I asked Edward.
"Yes. Don't worry, I'll pass him your message."
The decision to show up unannounced at Port Angeles, bringing along a crucial witness to my brother's case had been bold, and just like Rosalie had said, it would probably delay the prosecutor and the judge's final decision but to return to La Push without Harry was not an option anymore, especially now that things with Rhea were tense and I had to put up with EJ and Sam Uley. I needed my twin brother by my side asap.
"Where's the water bottle I asked you to bring?" I asked Danny who was emptying the groceries' bag on the top of the table.
"Here." He threw the bottle over to me. Then I poured all of the water inside the plastic on Bill's face who woke up immediately.
"WHAT THE FUCK!" He roared sitting down completely lost. "Where the fuck am I?"
"Do you remember me now that you're sober?" I demanded, pushing him down to the bed again. My forearm was pressed against his neck so he couldn't get up.
Danny, Isaac and Jay were quietly eating but I could feel they were ready to intervene in case Bill decided to fight back. Fortunately, he didn't.
"No… I don't know who you are…" He said between gasps.
"Your friend Tom ordered you to kill me." I launched the bait. "Does it ring a bell now?"
He stopped moving and looked carefully at me and then he must have finally recognised who I was.
"I… hit you… in the chest! I watched you fall down."
That was the best and the easiest confession I had ever hoped for. Bill's confession on the shooting was recorded, now I needed him to mention Tom's name.
"I guess you're not as good as you thought you were, plus I don't fall down that easily." I said as he watched me in awe. "And in case you don't know, you shot the wrong person. I guess Tom forgot to tell you that Harry has an identical twin brother."
"Twin?"
"We look the same… but I'm not Harry. So you're going to jail for nothing."
"I'm not going to jail!" He spat. "You can't prove shit so you and your buddies better let me go."
"What makes you think you can make demands?"
"What makes you think I feel intimidated by you and your little friends?" Bill forced my hand back and managed to get up. He was taller than any of us and bulkier too but I could take him down easily. The problem was that I needed him conscious and talking.
"You're going to have to choose." Isaac said. My younger brother was a lot more eloquent than me so I let him take the lead. He didn't have three PhDs by coincidence. "You can either take all the blames and be convicted for attempted murder or you can justify against the person who ordered my brother's death and maybe you can walk away with only a few years of sentence."
"You have nothing against me." He insisted.
"We can put you in La Push on the day Will was shot. We also have proof of your connection to Tom Harding." Isaac explained.
"But you don't have the gun." Bill grinned.
"Our lawyers won't need the gun to put you in jail. They have motive and opportunity. Oh… and there's also the bullet recovered at the crime scene. Did you know the bullet had drugs inside? I bet you mixed up the ammo of the shotgun you used and I'm sure the police will find matching bullets in your house."
"Bullshit!"
"What will happen to your mother and father when you go to jail for life? How will they live without your help?"
We had been at Bill's house. That's how we had learned where he was hiding. His mother was a seventy-something year old lady who liked to talk and had no idea the scumbag her son really was. She had told us he was spending some time in Newport, a small town in Idaho.
"Your father's stroke left him depending on medication, right? And your mother's atherosclerosis is getting worse, isn't it?" Isaac kept going. "If you do this, if you confess, the judge might give you a light penalty but for that you have to tell everyone about Tom's part in my brother's attack."
Isaac's words were now starting to have the desired effect. Bill was silently contemplating his options with a worried expression because he knew he wouldn't be able to get away with this.
"I'll do it on one condition." He decided.
"What?" I asked.
"My brother is serving time for robbery. He's supposed to get out in two years. I want him out now." He bargained. "A brother for a brother. What do you say?"
"It's a deal." I agreed.
The Cullens could easily take care of Bill's brother, then he would turn himself in, Tom would be caught by the police and Harry would be out of prison.
Simple, right?
