Book III – The Challenger
William Black
55. Twilight Boho
"You have got to be kidding me!" I exclaimed after hearing the weirdest story ever. "Do you really want me to believe that this girl was possessed by her great-grandmother's spirit? That is complete bullshit!"
"Will! Watch your language." Mom warned me. "We're sure we were talking to Odessa. This has happened before. Dana is a vessel and…"
"Vessel? She's clearly on drugs, mom." I pointed. "The living can't speak to the dead."
"Dana can." She opposed. "Why is it so hard for you to believe in spirits? You've been dealing with the supernatural world since a young age."
True. I was used to the supernatural and I had accepted my 'special' condition from the very beginning. When we were officially introduced to the pack, and the elders told us about the legends, I believed in every word, every detail.
The Quileute legends are about vampires, cold-blooded killers that must be stopped and destroyed. They are about Quileute men and women who can turn into giant wolves in order to protect the tribe when these cold creatures are nearby. I embraced my nature naturally but what my parents were now presenting me was a bit too much.
"When people are dead, they are dead. They don't come back. This lady you're talking about died like what? Five years ago, right?" Mom and dad nodded. "Then she's dead! Period! There's no way her spirit is still here!"
"Ancient warriors live through you." Dana's voice reached us from the living room's door. Her blindness had returned for she was touching the wall as she walked in and her eyes were white again. "My great-grandmother's spirit lives through me. It's the same principle."
"You should be resting." Mom said pulling Dana gently towards the couch so she could sit.
"I'm fine. Thank you, Leah." The girl smiled. "I also wanted to thank you for convincing Ella to be my private tutor. I missed school."
"You don't have to thank me. Like everyone else, you too, deserve to have a good education."
"You think I made everything up, don't you?"
Yes. Duh. I thought. In my opinion, mom and dad were being played for fools.
"No. Actually, Odessa confessed everything."
"Mom… come on. Are you saying you believe that a spirit of an old lady is trying to get Sarah to go to the Makah Reservation so she can marry some local dude and have his children because she wants the Makah people to have their own pack of wolves?" I tried to reason with my mother.
"I understand your worries and your skepticism, William but… you better leave this to us, all right?"
"What's your plan then? Are you going to keep Sarah indoors forever? Are you going to send her to another state or another country?"
"We don't know but we'll find a way," Dad replied. "We'll be busy for another hour or so, can you wait for us at the Vacant House, please? We'll be there as soon as we can."
I didn't have much choice. With a new crisis in hands, mom and dad would be occupied for the rest of the night and I didn't want Rhea to be alone with EJ for so long.
Unfortunately, I got there too late.
I found EJ and Rhea totally and completely wasted. And they weren't just drunk they were utterly stoned as well.
Rhea was lying down on the couch while EJ was sprawled in the living room's floor watching the ceiling and laughing his ass off about something invisible. I could smell the scent of cheap weed in the air.
I knew I shouldn't have left Rhea with EJ. I thought worriedly.
"What the hell did you give her?" I asked my cousin who took a while to recognize me.
"Hey Will! We were wondering where you were… Did you bring food? 'Cause I'm starving. Do you have money? We could order pizza."
"What have you been smoking, you damn asshole?"
"Smoking?" EJ laughed idiotically. "Oh… yeah… Twilight Boho… I made it myself."
"You gave Rhea a drug that you made?"
I didn't know if I was more impressed about EJ's stupidity or his boldness.
"It's my new creation! I'm going to be rich when I start selling it."
"What the fuck, EJ! Are you stupid!? Do you have any idea what could've happened to her?"
"Relax… She's only sleeping." EJ glanced over to the couch. "It's not like I gave her heroin… besides, I think she liked it."
"How do you fucking know that? She's unconscious!"
"That's because she drank a bottle of vodka all by herself. She's a selfish little bitch, you know?"
Drugs and alcohol are not a good combination so I inspected Rhea to see her condition. Her heart rate was normal, and so was her breathing. She seemed okay, only knocked out.
"What exactly did you give her?"
"I can't tell you the ingredients of my creation!" EJ said in indignation.
I was about murder EJ right there but then I would have to explain it to Aunt Rachel and Uncle Paul, and things would get ugly, so I counted to ten and took a deep breath.
This episode would be resumed tomorrow when both EJ and Rhea sobered up. Right now I was going to play nice. Besides I could identify the ingredients of EJ's creation by smelling the drug pipe on the floor.
"I'm going to stay here with Rhea. Go upstairs and have some sleep." I told my cousin. He squinted his eyes suspiciously, probably wondering if I was serious.
It took him five minutes to be able to stand and then he took another five trying to find the pipe and the lighter he had used in his smoking session earlier. Both items were with me, of course. I had snatched them from the floor while my cousin was struggling to stand. He eventually gave up and went upstairs but not before telling me to keep my 'dick' in my pants because he didn't want to wake up in the middle of the night listening to me getting laid.
I heard EJ falling down three times going up the stairs, and then he finally reached his bedroom. He dived into the mattress and fell asleep. I sighed in relief. I now understood what it was like to deal with a rebel son. Uncle Paul had my sympathy.
It looked like EJ's drug was made of marijuana, some opium and probably some kind of tobacco. It was a powerful combination given the fact that had put Rhea into a very heavy sleep.
But EJ was an idiot if he thought that he could simply mix up different types of smoking drugs and sell it. I had smoked weed in the past when I was a teenager but I did it for recreational purposes. EJ was messing with fire if he decided to become a drug dealer.
I sat down on the couch and placed Rhea's head on my lap. I guess that I would have to do something about my cousin but not tonight. I was a bit tired and I wanted to have some time to think about what was happening.
According to the Makah fortune teller, Rhea and I were now a pack.
The alpha pair.
But why? What use could another pack, only with two members, have in La Push? Mom and dad were the real alpha pair. They had more experience, they had been wolves for years and knew how to lead a pack. Despite all of my confidence, I still had a lot to learn. I had to agree that between me, Harry and Isaac, I was the one who lacked leading abilities due to my explosive temper. Isaac was a bit too permissive and insecure but he was learning fast.
And Harry…
"Finally… I thought you'd forgotten all about me." Harry said in a mocking tone.
Despite being miles away from each other, Harry and I were able to talk to each other. In order to do it, we had to be either sleeping or meditating.
"Come back Harry, please. I need you." I whined.
"I can't leave Season here by herself. We've talked about this."
"Yes but it's been a week and it's quite obvious the Romanians don't want to hurt her otherwise they would've killed her already."
I had no right to demand my brother to leave his girlfriend behind. Season needed him more than I did. She had been caught in the middle of this crappy reality and she was still trying to adjust. But I was selfish and I missed him more than I was willing to admit.
"Has she forgiven you or what?" I changed the subject knowing that I wouldn't be able to change his mind.
"Sort of."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"I cooked her dinner yesterday. She was a little impressed." He bragged.
"Really? Was the food edible?" I teased him.
"Almost…" He confessed. "We talked and…"
"Talked!? Come on Harry, you can do better than that! The girl needs more than words if you get what I mean."
"Before you start with your stupid ideas, Season asked me to ask you to go to the Makah Reservation and check on her family. She spoke to Hannah yesterday but she feels something's wrong. She's afraid that Tom might be back."
I had been neglecting the part of the agreement I had made with Harry about protecting Season's family. I had tried to persuade Hannah to stay in La Push with her children and with Season's brother and sister but she had refused because the kids couldn't miss school. Since I was too busy trying to find the mercenary leech that had kidnapped Rhea, I kind of let her go home two days ago.
"She's probably imagining things," I said to appease my brother. "If Tom was back, Hannah would've called us."
"Can you just go there to check it out? Please?"
"Sure. I guess I can always volunteer to take the fortune teller home. That way I won't waste time going there twice."
"Fortune teller?"
"Dana something… She's Makah and… it's complicated."
"I've got time."
"Okay…" Did I really know how to explain what had happened earlier with Dana? "Mom and dad think this girl is a vessel to her great-grandmother's spirit. I have no idea how they knew the old lady or the teenage girl herself but apparently, there's a prophecy about a catastrophe and you and I are the ones who'll save the day."
"What the hell are you talking about?"
"The old lady said that the prophecy refers that a pair of twins will save everyone," I explained. "However not everyone believes we're the twins of that prophecy. Besides the old lady lied about other things to get mom and dad to have more children."
"What?"
"Yeah… it seems that she told mom and dad that we were going to fight for dad's position in the pack and that one of us would kill the other. The only way to prevent that and to ensure that the twins from the prophecy would both survive would be for mom and dad to have a third potential alpha."
Thinking about it, that was wrong. Having a third child to save Harry and me was not right. If Isaac ever found out about this, it would probably hurt him badly. Who wants to be told that they only exist because their siblings needed to be saved?
"Do you really believe that mom and dad had Isaac just because they wanted to keep us safe?" Harry asked. I guess he wasn't very comfortable with that idea either.
"I don't know."
"What about Sarah and JJ? If the idea was saving us with a third child, then why did they have two more kids?"
"I'm as clueless as you are, Harry. I'm just telling you what I know."
"But she lied right?"
"About us fighting for dad's position, yes. However, she still claims that the prophecy is true."
"Why did she need mom and dad to have more kids then?"
"She wants the Makah tribe to have a pack of protectors just like we have."
"Seriously?" Harry inquired. "And what was she planning? Kidnapping Isaac?"
"Actually she's interested in Sarah instead."
"Sarah? But Sarah's not a wolf."
"Not yet."
"Does she have any symptoms?"
"No, but with fewer wolves in La Push and a calamity coming our way, everyone believes more kids will phase and Sarah's on top of the list."
"The wolf gene is stronger in boys. You have David, Jerry, Levi, August, and Theo. So as you can see there are many boys in La Push that have more chances of phasing than Sarah because she's a girl."
"Actually… A girl phased recently."
"A girl?" Harry was curious now. "What girl? Was it Ella?"
It made sense for him to think about our cousin because Ella was Sam's daughter and the eldest of our generation.
"No. It was Rhea."
Harry didn't say a word for more than a minute. And when he recovered from the shock, he could barely find the words to articulate a whole sentence.
"Rhea White… how is that possible? Does she… I mean..."
"Yes, she's a wolf like us. She looks a lot like mom. She's slender, fast and her fur is dark gray, the same color as her eyes."
"That's why you marked her."
"Probably. We're still analyzing things."
"At least now she won't marry the other guy, right?"
"I have no idea. She's not taking this easily. When we became wolves we loved it, remember? It was cool to be able to phase and feel the adrenaline of hunting vamps. It was fun to be with the others and be a part of a group but for her things are different. She's taking it a lot worse than Jay, EJ or even Danny."
"I guess that's normal… I mean she's still trying to understand everything. You can't just expect Rhea to accept this reality just like that. Give her time."
"Time to do what? Smoke weed and drink a bottle of vodka with EJ?"
"She did really do that?"
"Yes. I know EJ probably talked her into it, but still… I'm kind of…"
"Disappointed?"
"Angry," I confessed. "If she's feeling confused, irritated or whatever… she should've talked to me. I'm her mate."
"She will talk to you. You just need to be patient. And be there when she wakes up in the morning, all right? Stop with your bad boy attitude, man up and help her to fit in the pack."
Harry had always been good in the motivational speeches.
"Didn't I tell you? I'm alpha now. Alpha of my own pack. It's just me and Rhea but the Makah girl said there will be more members soon. Isn't it great news?"
I'm sure Harry understood the sarcasm in my voice.
"I thought that's what you wanted."
"To be a leader of a pack of two? Come on, Harry…"
"At least you don't have to follow anyone's orders anymore."
That was the moment I realized how petty and ignorant I had been so far. Of course, that being under my father's rule was frustrating, especially for my wolf who was competitive and liked to challenge everyone around. The wolf spirit that lived in me wanted to be an alpha because that was his birthright and that was his goal regardless of the way to achieve that position.
And that had led me to believe that I'd be completely happy when I ceased to be under my father's leadership. I thought that becoming an alpha would make everything all right. But it didn't because I was still not a real leader.
Dad was a real leader and Isaac would be a real leader very soon.
I was just an alpha by chance. This was not how I wanted things to happen. I wanted to have a pack following me because I was worth following, because I was the best wolf to take that position, because I was the best warrior, and because I could take care of everyone just like dad had been doing until now.
I didn't want to be an alpha just because I was Jacob Black's son or because I had marked Rhea as my mate eight years ago and now she needed an alpha in order to take her position as alpha female.
Along with the disappointment, I was feeling about this, came the guilt because I didn't want to be an alpha without my twin brother being one too. After all, Harry was my parents' firstborn child.
They were always saying that it didn't matter that Harry was born forty-three minutes before me and that we had equal rights to the alpha position, but Harrison was indeed their firstborn.
"Will, I have to go now. Tell Alice and Edward that I still don't have any idea where we are. I'm not even sure we're in Europe anymore. There's no TV, no radio, no computers… everything they bring here for us doesn't bring any label. We're not authorized to go outside for long, but the yard has huge walls so I can't even have a glimpse of the landscape."
"We'll figure something out to bring you home." I tried to sound optimistic though every piece of information Harry had given to us so far had ended in failure.
"Don't worry about me. Just make sure Hannah and the kids are okay. And stay close to Sarah. I know you don't trust the Makah girl, but if she's right, you need to make sure our sister doesn't phase."
Harry was right. Even though I really wanted him to come back, I should focus on Sarah right now because Harry could take care of himself and Sarah was still our kid sister.
I woke up suddenly. Rhea was not on the couch with me, she was bent over the kitchen's sink throwing up. I held her long dark hair so it wouldn't get dirty.
"I feel like shit…" She whispered miserably.
"Good," I said. "That will teach not to do trust EJ ever again."
She grunted something I didn't understand.
"I thought you said we couldn't get sick."
"You're not sick. You have a hangover because you took drugs and alcohol."
"He said it wouldn't affect me."
"EJ's a new wolf as well and he likes to try things so he decided to use you in his little experiment. He gave you a home-made drug and alcohol to see how much a wolf can take. If you were an ordinary human, you'd be dead."
"Bastard."
"Do you want some coffee?" I asked when she was done throwing up.
"No… I don't think my stomach is well enough to take anything yet. Just tell me there's hot water in this house. I'm dying for a bath."
xxxxxxxxxx
Mom and dad came to the Vacant House later that morning. Rhea had just met me in the kitchen after her bath, for breakfast when they arrived. EJ was still sleeping upstairs and I decided it would be better to leave him like that. The last thing I needed was my parents noticing EJ had been smoking weed last night.
"Your mother was… really nice." Rhea admitted. "I wasn't expecting her to be so… understanding."
"My mother is a caring person."
"Unless my Aunt Vanessa is involved, right?"
"Close enough."
"She told me that I should stay a week or two in the Vacant House before calling my family."
"I won't forbid you to contact them if that's your wish. You're free to call them whenever you like."
I knew mom wanted to delay facing the Whites but I couldn't stop Rhea from calling her mother.
"Maybe I should do what your mother suggested. I also need some time to figure out what I'm going to tell mom."
"My mother told you about Holly and Melissa, didn't she?"
Rhea nodded. The story about the two girls who had tragically died after learning about the legends and about their lovers' true nature, worked every time.
Mom had managed to get Rhea to think twice about telling her family about the pack.
"She's right about telling the truth to other people. I can hardly believe all of this myself much less my mom and grandparents. I need time to prepare them."
"What about Art?"
"What?"
"You only mentioned your mother and grandparents. What about your fiancé?"
"What about your girlfriend? Did you tell her what you are?" Rhea dodged my question.
"No. And Lex is not my girlfriend anymore. I broke up with her almost a week ago. Personally."
Rhea was in silence for a couple of seconds.
"I'm not going to tell Art. At least not for now."
"And when he starts calling you?"
"I'll tell him I need time."
I nodded. Whenever a girl says that she needs time, the chances of getting her back are close to none.
"Where are we going anyway?" Rhea asked.
"To the Makah Reservation."
"Why?"
"I'm doing my brother a favor."
Actually, I had phoned Hannah a few minutes ago and it kept going to voicemail so I decided it was time to check on Season's cousin. Thanks to the mind link I'd seen where Hannah lived so I was on my way.
"Is this pack related?"
"No, why?"
"I'm kind of curious, that's all."
"About what exactly?"
"The pack and what you do… I want to…"
"You want to know if what my mom told you is true." I guessed.
"She told me about healing abilities, super strength, mind reading, and a lot of other things."
"It's not mind reading. It's a link between all of the pack members." I corrected. "It's something that… It may sound a bit invasive but it's quite useful when we're on the ground, fighting our enemies."
My father had told me the same words when I first phased, and I had told him to go to hell. I smiled at the memory.
"Fight enemies… I've never fought before."
"You will learn with the best wolf warriors."
"What for?"
"I'm sure my mother explained it to you."
"Yes, she told me that from now on I'm a protector and my job is to make sure no vampire crosses our lands and kills innocent people. She also told me that in order to become a good warrior I'll have to lie to my family and friends, I'll have to live here for the rest of my life, I'll have to obey orders of an alpha, and I'll experience several changes in my body that will make me feel like I'm a dude instead of a girl."
"I know it sounds bad… but that's just in the beginning." I tried to appease her. "Besides, sometimes our abilities are useful."
"Really? When?"
When you're dying. I was about to say that when we arrived at the small house I'd seen in Harry's memories. As I stopped the car, two little girls came running down the porch and started to wave their arms frantically at me.
"He's hitting mom! Please, help her!" They both screamed.
Did Tom decide to come back and get even? If he did, he was as good as dead.
