Book III – The Challenger

57. Complications
"Sarah?" I called softly not wanting to scare my sister. It wouldn't be nice watching her falling down the cliff because I snook upon her.
She turned around slowly and I noticed she had her eyes red and wet with tears. I would have to take precautions because it was rather obvious that Sarah was not in her full state of mind and she could do something really stupid like jumping from a thirty feet high cliff.
"What happened?" I asked in a calm voice.
"You were right. He imprinted." She sobbed. "He really imprinted."
Of course, she would be upset about Jay. For some reason I had never really understood, Sarah had fallen in love with our childhood friend Jay who was also five years her senior. Now she was heartbroken because he was a wolf and he had imprinted on our cousin Ella.
"I know, Sarah. But it's going to be okay." I said encouragingly.
"How?"
"One day you'll find the person that is meant for you."
"I've already found him. It's Jay." She yelled.
"You're too young to know that. We all make mistakes when we're young."
"Jay's not a mistake and you were my age when you claimed Rhea White." Sarah pointed out.
It looked like Isaac had been talking too much. I needed to have a little talk with my brother later.
"Why did this happen, Will?" She inquired more softly now.
"Can you please step out of the edge so we can talk properly?" I asked Sarah. "I'll tell you everything you want to know. Just get away from the edge."
People do stupid things when they're hurting. Somehow I remember dad mentioning that mom had once tried to take a vampire on her own after she was dumped by Sam Uley.
"Is there a way to stop this?" Sarah took a few unsure steps in my direction but she was still too close to the cliff's edge.
"Stop what?"
"The imprint."
"Not that I'm aware of. The imprint bond is permanent." I knew that this wasn't what Sarah wanted to hear yet I couldn't bring myself to lie to my sister. Lies made everything worse. "But there are... exceptions."
"Like what?"
"The imprint bond is unpredictable and mysterious. It ties down a wolf to his soulmate forever but the nature of such bond may vary. Quil imprinted on Claire when she was two years old. He didn't love her like a man loves a woman. For many years, he was just her older brother, her guardian, her best friend. So, people say that the wolf is what the imprint wants and needs him to be and nothing more."
"Ella doesn't love Jay. I'm sure of that." Sarah smiled and finally walked forward and away from the precipice. "She can't possibly love someone she hasn't seen for ten years, right? Even when they were just kids, she never showed any interest in him."
I didn't know what was worse: having my kid sister crying and hurting over the imprint between Jay and Ella, or having her hoping that Jay could actually break the imprint for her.
"But Ella is not two years old," I warned Sarah. "Her feelings can change any moment."
"What if he stops phasing?"
I shrugged. No one in the pack knew if the imprint bond could break after a wolf stopped phasing. Both Justin and Josh had stopped phasing though having imprints but they couldn't tell if the bond was gone or just dormant.
Both of them had married other women and now had families. Eighteen years is a long wait for a guy neither Josh nor Justin felt like they had to wait for their imprints to find a wife and have children. They were always present in Julia and Jaelle's lives but only as friends. Jared was quite thankful for that but the truth was that no one knew what would happen when Julia and Jaelle became of age.
The girls were now sixteen years old and it was obvious they had no romantic interest in their imprints, but in the future, their feelings towards Justin and Josh could change, and if that happened it was quite possible that even not being wolves anymore, they could leave their families to be with their imprints.
That was something that could happen to Jay as well. Ella could choose to be only Jay's friend for the moment but one day she could want more and Jay would not be able to deny her anything.
"It's too risky, Sarah."
"Why?"
"Because so far no wolf was able to break an imprint. You may think that Jay can succeed where no one else could, but you'll be fooling yourself. What you had with Jay must remain in the past. I'm sorry."
And I truly was. Even though I didn't appreciate the idea of this relationship between my sister and Jay, I felt no joy knowing that he had imprinted and that my sister was hurting.
"I thought he loved me. I thought he wanted me... we had plans, dreams... Why am I not enough for him?"
That's not it. He's the one who's not enough for you. I thought and I immediately remembered Dana's words when mom had mentioned something about Sam imprinting on Emily. Dana had told her that it wasn't her who wasn't suitable for Sam. It was Sam who wasn't suitable for her.
Maybe the girl isn't a fake like I thought she was. Maybe she's right about the war that's coming and about Sarah. If she phases, every wolf will want to be her mate.
I walked forward so I could pull Sarah away from the cliffs and take her home but she didn't allow me to touch her and took a few steps back again.
"Sarah, please come with me. Let me take you home. You need to rest."
"I don't want to go home. I just want to forget. I want the pain to stop."
I was out of ideas. If I didn't do something fast, Sarah was going to jump.
"I felt just like you once." We both heard a familiar voice behind us.
I turned around and saw mom coming out of the forest. She was wearing sports pants and one of dad's old shirts. "Remember when I told you that my boyfriend left me?"
Sarah nodded.
"Well, he didn't just leave me. He left me for my best friend, my cousin. He left me for his imprint." When mom said this, Sarah ran towards our mother's open arms. Mom kissed her hair, wrapping her arms around her and whispering encouraging words while Sarah cried.
I sighed, relieved to know that for now Sarah was safe and one day she would be all right. It would take time, but she would make it.
"How did you know we were here?" I asked mom.
"Denis was on patrol and he spotted you." She replied. "Thanks for being here for her."
"She's my sister. I'll always be here for her."
Mom cupped my face with one hand and then she smiled. "I'll take her home. You can go now."
I nodded. I turned around for a couple of times to check if mom and Sarah were okay, and then I phased and headed towards the Vacant House.
When Harry and I were teenagers we used to run through the forest, racing with each other, careless and free. Both of us aimed to be faster than any other wolf, but we eventually realized we would never be able to beat mom. After those races, we used to head over to Granddad Billy's house and we had been caught naked on several occasions by Aunt Connie, Aunt Rachel and Aunt Becca. Despite the embarrassment, we never thought much of it, because they all knew the secret and were used to deal with it. Plus it was funny to watch Aunt Connie covering up her eyes with her hands, screaming at us to put on some clothes.
When I almost got caught that afternoon by Hannah, who was having a cigarette outside in the backyard of the Vacant House, I decided that from now on I would have to be more careful. Especially because there were children in the house. Luckily for me, Hannah was too focused on her own thoughts to notice my nudity so I put on my shorts on in a record time and joined her.
"You shouldn't smoke, you know?" I told her sitting down next to her on the steps. "It's bad for you, for the baby and you're giving a bad example to the girls."
"I know." She sighed. "It's the last one, I promise. Anyways, you shouldn't walk around half-naked either. It also gives a bad example and your girlfriend might misunderstand things. She is your girlfriend, isn't she?"
"I'm not sure yet." It was my turn to sigh. "It's complicated."
"Complicated?" She laughed. "I'm eight weeks pregnant with my ex-boyfriend's baby. Since I could never go through an abortion I have only two options: have the baby and raise him or her alone, having three more children to look after or go back to Peter and beg him to take me back hence spending the rest of my life serving him while he beats the crap out of me and my daughters."
"You're not going back to that weasel face," I stated. I couldn't even understand how she was pondering to do that. The guy was a major jerk just like his uncle.
"How am I supposed to feed four children on my own?"
"You're not on your own. You have Season, and you have us."
"Season's not here. And you..." She hesitated. "What will happen if Season and Harry break up?"
"What do you mean?"
"You're helping me now because your brother's dating my cousin, but what happens if they split up?"
"Why would they split up?"
"Couples break up all the time."
"You don't know Harry like I do."
"What are you talking about?"
"Trust me, Hannah. My brother's in love with Season and there's no way in hell they're going to split up."
Hannah got up and gave me a sad look before entering the house.
"Love's never that easy." She whispered. "Trust me… I know what I'm talking about."
I couldn't blame Hannah for her skepticism. Apparently, she had been hurt too many times before. I guess that relationships could fail for many different reasons. Actually, I knew that because all of my past relationships hadn't ended well. Lex's silent tears were still fresh in my memory.
I would have to do better with Rhea, I would have to be more careful and pay attention to her feelings otherwise our relationship would be condemned to failure.
With that in mind, I went inside and I grabbed my cell phone. Two days ago, I had received a text message from Josiah. Harry and I were being called back to Seattle to join the team. We had been selected as pilots for the three first competitions of the season. The first one would take place in Helena, Montana in three days. Despite my failed relationship with his daughter, Josiah was still pulling the strings for us.
I had always wanted to be promoted from backup racer to first pilot and this was my chance. But if I accepted, I would have to leave Rhea and my family for months and this was not the best moment to do that.
'Harry and I are unavailable right now. I'm really sorry.' I wrote down quickly and pressed the 'send' button. Then I went to check on EJ.
xxxxxxxxxx
The teenage girl from the Makah Reservation turned out to be right. Ever since Rhea and I had returned to La Push, I had become an alpha. However, so far, no other wolf had joined our pack which was rather comforting, especially for Rhea.
She was taking her time to adapt to this new reality and it was obvious she wasn't like the others. Isaac, Jay, Danny, EJ and even Quinn, who had temporarily moved into La Push were now used to the basics. Quinn was the only new wolf who didn't respond to any of the alphas of the reservation, but that didn't mean he was less enthusiastic about training.
Rhea, however, was not making it easy for anyone. She had recently learned that phasing into a giant wolf takes away our privacy in the worst kind of way. During her first practice with Uncle Embry and the new wolves she had gotten too anxious and couldn't control her phasing, so she ended up turning back to human unexpectedly in front of everyone. Luckily, Isaac was fast enough to cover her with his shirt but Rhea had hated the experience so much she had refused to phase the next day.
But nudity wasn't what she hated the most about being a wolf. She loathed the mind-link we shared. In the beginning, she was thankful that she only had one wolf to share her mind with, but she had clearly changed her opinion after being caught thinking about me.
I had no intention to violate her mind whatsoever but I got worried when EJ got home without her on the day of her first training. He told me about her difficulties in staying in wolf form and about her leaving into the woods, abandoning the practice wearing only Isaac's shirt. I went to look out for her and when I phased I realized she was daydreaming about me.
It was proof enough that she was attracted to me and that it was just a matter of time until she understood that there was no future for her and Art. When she realized I was there, reading her thoughts she got angry. Extremely angry.
She started avoiding me ever since. So today I had decided to corner Rhea and get her to talk to me about whatever was bothering her.
Rhea was about to leave the house when I caught up with her.
"I'm late for practice. Your uncle hates when I'm late." She said before I could even breathe a word.
"Uncle Seth is not your alpha. I am." For now, Rhea was practicing lessons with Uncle Seth while Uncle Embry was teaching the boys.
"So I've heard." She spat sarcastically. "Get out of the way, Will. I really have to go."
Rhea left but today I wasn't willing to let her go so easily.
"We need to talk," I said going after her.
"Why?"
"Because you're avoiding me as if I've done something really horrible to you," I said. "I never meant to look into your mind like that, and I promise I won't do it again. I know it's uncomfortable because I've felt the same when I turned for the first time, but there are ways you can protect your thoughts, you just need to be patience and practice."
"I can't believe you can't even admit it!"
"Admit what? That I'm glad you thought about choosing me over Art? Because if that's the problem, I admit it! I'm happy you prefer me. I'm happy that I make you feel safe and I'm happy that you enjoyed my performance when we slept together."
"That's not what I'm talking about!" She stopped walking and turned to face me. "I'm talking about you telling the Council to forbid me from going to Seattle."
"What?"
I had no idea what she's talking about. Why would she want to go to Seattle?
"I went talked to the Council two days ago. I asked them to allow me to go to Seattle to see Art. They said no and when I asked why they said I should talk to you. So, you told them to forbid me from going."
"No. I didn't know about that."
"Of course you did. You're always saying I'm not ready to be with other people. You're always telling me to be careful..."
"Because you're not ready Rhea! You know that as much as I do. It's been five days since your first morphed. It's not enough time for you to master the wolf inside of you. Can you imagine what it would be like if you phased inside your house? With your mother right next to you? Sam almost killed Emily once. She was mauled and had to go to the hospital! Is that what you want?"
Rhea's eyes went to the floor.
"No, that's not what I want." She admitted.
"Look... here in this house you're amongst your kind. There are very small chances that you lose control here and even if you do, EJ and I will be around to make sure nothing bad happens. But when you're with your family or Art, the chances of losing control will increase. That's why they don't want you to go."
"So it wasn't you who asked them to..."
"No." I cut her off. "Even though I don't quite understand why you suddenly want to go see Art and talk to him."
"You don't understand?" She raised her voice. " .Into. !"
"So I've heard." I joked.
"Art was good to me. We met a month before I graduated. I was driving to meet some friends when I got a flat tire. He was driving to a job interview that day but he stopped to help me change the tire. He gave me his number when he was done and a few days later I decided to call him back to thank him. He didn't get the job because of me but he said it was okay. We met a few times after that and then he asked me out. We had a good relationship going on. He proposed to me on the top of my favorite place in Seattle, he got me a ring and when I told him my family didn't have much money, he said his family would pay for the wedding and then..." Rhea looked at me intensively. "I cheated on him, with you... and the worst thing is that I don't regret it. When I'm with you I feel at home, I feel I'm safe and that I'm where I belong but that doesn't make everything all right. Art deserves an apology and he deserves the chance to move on, but I can only do that if I go to Seattle because I can't break up with him on the phone. Do you understand now? I'll always be the girl who cheated on her fiancé, but at least I want to make this right for Art."
"I'll take you there myself." I decided. She was right about this. She couldn't cancel her wedding by phone. Besides, it was obvious that Rhea also needed closure so she could stop feeling guilty about the situation. "You can't stay there, okay? You have to go see Art and then you have to return with me."
Rhea nodded.
"I'll let Uncle Seth know you'll miss your practice," I added.
It was a quiet journey. Rhea seemed to be in deep thought, probably trying to rehearse her speech for when she was face to face with her soon to be ex-fiancé. I couldn't deny that I was happy to see this coming to an end. The sooner this wedding was canceled, the better.
Just like Rhea had predicted, Art arrived at his place, at exactly five o'clock in the afternoon. He arrived in a black sedan and parked in the driveway. As soon as he walked into the house with a bag of groceries, Rhea moved uncomfortably in the passenger seat. I had parked the car a few feet away from Art's house.
"You have the right to be anxious and emotional about this, but once you're in there with him try to be objective and keep it simple."
"Simple? I'm going to break his heart, William!"
"I'm telling you this because I don't want to be forced to go there and get you," I told her. "Stay calm and don't argue."
"Okay." She sighed deeply and then she went to break up with Art Brenner. Finally.
It wasn't the lovey-dovey talk that all couples do in the movies when they break up. Art was surprised when he opened the door and saw Rhea there. He was a perceptive guy so he realized quite soon what her real purpose was.
He got the answers he wanted and in the end, he did have his heart broken. Rhea was brutally honest about everything. She confessed she cheated on him and that she couldn't marry him because she would hurt them both if she accepted to be his wife since she didn't love him. She told him he was a nice guy and that any other girl would be tremendously lucky to have him as a boyfriend and then she kissed him and gave him the engagement ring.
He didn't accept it back because he said it would bring him bad luck in the future so Rhea kept the ring and after about forty minutes she came back to the car. To me.
She remained in silence for a couple of seconds, her right hand firmly closed.
"I need to get rid of this." She told me when I turned the engine on. She was talking about the ring in her hand.
"Are you okay?"
"I'm a horrible person." She said and then she started crying.
Rhea cried all the way back to La Push. No word was exchanged between us. She needed time to heal. She needed closure. Tomorrow it would be a better day. Or so I hoped.
xxxxxxxxxx
I was wrong. The previous day I thought today would be a better day but it wasn't. Cristine Spears had passed away at exactly 2.20 am at the age of thirty and her funeral service would take place that afternoon. There were two families distraught after her death. The Groves were a proud family, they had common ancestors with the Uley and either Cristine's parents or grandparents had supported her marriage with Josh. She was a few years younger than him, seven to be more precise, and she quit college to be with Josh. Her parents never forgave her for that.
Nonetheless, Josh and his two children were the ones suffering the most, so the Groves decided to bring the white flag and they offered Josh and the girls all the support they needed. It was a good gesture if Josh hadn't mentioned how little support they had given them during the time they were married and how poor they had treated Cristine after she got married and had children.
Christine's parents didn't like the comment and Gary had to act as a mediator between his father and his brother-in-law to prevent an argument.
I sympathized with Josh. He was a nice guy and unfortunately, he was also the living proof that not all marriages end with a happily-ever-after. The pain of losing Cristine was visible in his eyes but he didn't cry during the whole ceremony for the sake of his daughters.
"Hey... what are you doing here alone?" Isaac asked coming to sit next to me in the back of the room. Almost everyone was around the coffin, talking, whispering, and placing flowers on top of the casket.
"I'm not in the best of moods today," I told my brother.
"Did something happen with Rhea?" He whispered.
"She broke up with her fiancé and has been acting strangely," I told him.
"Strangely?"
"She's still locked inside her bedroom. I don't know if she's sad or angry."
"You have to be patient, Will."
"It's not like she was in love with him. She admitted to me that she always had feelings for me. I don't understand why she's acting this way."
"Last time I checked people hate to go against their moral values. I believe Rhea is someone who values honesty, commitment, and loyalty above everything but because of a... lot of things she betrayed and abandoned her fiancé."
"You mean because of me."
He shrugged.
"I think she's trying to regain faith in herself but for that she needs time."
"Okay..." I finally said. "And what should I do?"
"Don't pressure her. Give her a couple of days."
I guess a couple of days wouldn't hurt. If she needed those days to erase the guilt she was feeling for hurting Art, then I would give her privacy. After all, I had also felt like crap after breaking up with Lex.
Cristine's funeral took place a few hours later. It rained the whole time. A storm was brawling not only in the atmosphere but also inside of me.
Cristine was dead but in thirty years she had achieved many things and she had loved. She had had a husband and two beautiful daughters. She had been happy until cancer had stolen her life.
And what about me? I was twenty-five years old and I had wasted years fooling around.
Life is too short. I thought while I was watching the coffin being lowered into the grave. Far away a thunder roared and at the same time, my phone vibrated. I read the message: 'The Volturi are coming. We have two weeks.'
"You said they would come in the summer." Dad faced Alice. It was kind of funny to watch someone as short as Alice Cullen facing someone as tall as my father on equal terms. Because she was a vampire, Alice wasn't intimidated by dad's frown or his death glare.
We had met the Cullens at their house after Cristine's funeral. Only me, dad, mom and Uncle Seth were present. The rest of the pack had been released for the rest of the day.
"Something happened. I don't know what it was but it made Aro and Caius leave Mazzola and head home before scheduled. They'll reach Volterra soon enough and then Aro will read Gustaf's mind and he'll come to the conclusion that Gustaf's power was removed by the last person he had contact with."
"You mean Season, right?" I said.
Alice nodded.
"They won't find her here though." My mother pointed out.
"That's the problem," Alice informed. "They'll think we're hiding her."
"But we can prove them that we're not," I said.
"Yes, we can. But then we'll have to tell them the truth. We'll have to tell them that the Romanian Coven is back..."
"And that we knew about it and didn't inform them right away." Edward finished his sister's sentence.
"The Volturi take betrayal quite seriously," Carlisle announced. "I'm afraid we'll be in trouble again."
"How many of them will come?" Dad asked.
"Twenty-seven. Including Alec and Jane." Alice replied.
"If we call the White pack we'll beat them in numbers. And with Bella, we have a chance to win the fight." I advanced. Bella was a shield. She could protect everyone against Jane and Alec.
"We don't recommend a fight against the Volturi," Carlisle said. The air inside the Cullen's living room was suddenly tense. "The Volturi will know, just like the Romanians did, that not all of you are experienced fighters and there's no time to train young wolves."
He was right. Jay, Quinn, Rhea, Danny, EJ and the two new wolves from the White pack didn't have time to become experienced fighters in only two weeks. So even if we had the numbers, we'd be in disadvantage and if there was a fight, we could still lose.
"What do you suggest then?" I asked.
"We'll play the victim," Edward said. "But we need to be very convincing."
The plan was to tell the Volturi that we had been ordered by the Romanians to stay put and don't say anything about their coven otherwise they would kill Harry.
"And if they believe us... what will happen then?" Mom inquired.
"Hopefully, they will go back to Italy to plan a way of destroying the Romanians, again," Carlisle said.
"What about Harry and Season? Aro won't spare them, will he?"
Season was a danger to the Volturi so it was possible that Aro would order her death too, and as for Harry, I believed the Volturi didn't care enough about him to spare his life.
"Season and Harry are expandable," Edward confirmed my thoughts.
We all growled.
"But there's still hope for them." Alice smiled.
"Hope?" Mom and dad asked in unison.
"We can warn them."
"Who? The Romanians? Won't the Volturi know we did it?"
"Not the Romanians. Only Harry." Alice specified. "And then Harry can plan an escape with the girl before the Volturi attack the Romanian coven."
It sounded easy but in reality, the plan could end up blowing up in our faces thus getting us all killed.
"Jasper, can you help training the younger wolves? I know there's not much time but they'll be better prepared if you help us." Dad asked.
"Of course." Jasper accepted.
"Can I go too?" Emmett pleaded. "Come on, I can help."
"Any help is welcome," Dad said.
"I'm going to kick some ass," Emmett said cheerfully. "When do we start?"
"Tomorrow."
We left the Cullen's house shortly after. Dad ordered Uncle Seth to call everyone for a meeting tonight. According to Carlisle, we should avoid a confrontation with the Italians but dad wanted to be prepared.
"We have to take precautions. That is why I want us to have a backup plan. Alice can't see the outcome of this visit because we're involved so I want everyone ready to fight."
I could have told dad that I didn't want Rhea to participate in this but he was still the most powerful alpha in La Push and the truth was we needed the numbers. The Volturi wouldn't appreciate knowing that the pack had new additions but they would certainly be more careful.
Isaac and I went to the Vacant House while mom, dad and Uncle Seth headed towards Granddad Billy's house.
Rhea was at home with Hannah's youngest children, Nyla and Maisy. Aunt Rachel had found Hannah a job at Forks High school. It was a good job and she was better paid than in the restaurant and bar she had worked previously. At least in a school's cafeteria, she wouldn't have men groping her or unsatisfied costumers yelling at her.
For the first time in many years, Hannah was hopeful and she had finally stopped thinking about contacting her ex-boyfriend.
Danny, Jay, and Quinn joined us after a few minutes. EJ arrived after everyone else.
"Mom wants to know if you're going to have dinner with us tonight," Danny asked his brother when he sat down on the kitchen counter, holding his pipe and a small bag of dope.
"I don't know." He shrugged. "Will dad be there?"
"I guess so,"
"Then I'm staying here. Will's girlfriend can cook a few things quite decently."
"I'm not William's girlfriend!" Rhea stated firmly.
"Whatever sister... but I should warn you that you call his name practically every night."
"You liar!"
"Yey..." I put myself between EJ and Rhea. "Calm down!"
"He's lying!" She insisted.
EJ put his tongue out like a kid fooling around and he went to get a beer from the fridge.
"We don't have much time to explain to you what's happening," Isaac said. Danny, Quinn, and Jay took their seats at the table and I forced Rhea down into a chair next to me. "EJ can you please sit down?"
"You know something, Isaac? You're starting to sound a lot like my dad." EJ said. "You're not my boss!"
"Technically, I am." Isaac opposed and I grinned. A couple of months ago my brother would've never said something like that.
"Just because you're alpha, doesn't make you king!"
"Sit the fuck down, EJ!" I ordered him.
He glared at me and Isaac and he finally sat down, away from us. I sighed.
"We're going to have training sessions every day from now on. No exceptions. Rhea will have to join the boys again and we'll have a new instructor." Isaac informed.
"Jasper is a vampire who fought many battles against other vampires, especially newborns. He's a brilliant strategist and he can teach you many things but you have to behave and listen to what he says." I added.
"Is it wise to have a leech teaching us?" Quinn asked. "Won't we attack him?"
"You might find his scent repulsing and your wolf might feel anxious to be close to him, but Jasper's an empath, he can control your emotions so you won't attack him. Just remember he's not the enemy."
"No damn leech is going to touch my emotions!" EJ growled.
"Look, we're not prepared to fight against the Volturi. And without Jasper's guidance, we'll lose!" Isaac said. "He's a vampire, but he can help us to be stronger and to face our enemies. If you don't take this seriously you won't survive the battle."
"Yes, I will!" EJ stated stubbornly. "I'm not useless. I fought against the other ones and I killed one of them! So don't tell me I'm not good enough to fight these... vultures!"
"It's Volturi, they're Italian," Isaac informed.
"Really? I guess I feel much better now that I know their nationality." EJ mocked.
"That shit with the Romanians was nothing compared to what we're about to face in two weeks." I backed up Isaac. "These bastards have powers. They can kill us in a heartbeat if we're not prepared."
"Powers?" Rhea asked. "Like the ones the Cullens have?"
"Worse."
"The Cullens have powers?" Danny, Quinn, and EJ asked. I had spoken to Rhea about the Cullens but I guess no one had bothered to explain it to the younger wolves.
"They do. Edward can read minds, Bella is a shield, Alice can see the future and Jasper can control emotions." Isaac resumed. He had been learning many things about vampires, werewolves, and wolves with Carlisle lately.
"The Volturi have more powers though. Alec and Jane are elite members of the Volturi Guard, and despite their young appearance they have deadly powers." I said.
"Like what?" EJ wanted to know.
"Alec can deprive you of your senses and Jane can inflict pain," I said. "But they're not the only ones."
By the look on their faces, I knew there would be no more jokes or questions so Isaac and I began to fill them in about each and every member of the Volturi coven and their special powers.
