75. Wake Me Up - part 3
A white flag has had different meanings throughout history but usually, it's recognized as a symbol of surrender, truce or ceasefire. It means that no violence should fall upon the bearer of such a flag.
Most of us wanted to open up an exception this time because whoever was carrying the white flag was also a vampire. And a white flag didn't give him the right to enter our territory. However, and luckily for the vamp, the wonderful Cullens arrived just in time to avoid a bloodbath.
It wouldn't be a bloodbath in the real sense of the word because even though vampires feed off of blood, they don't bleed. Doesn't make any sense, but that's what we've been told. We were ready to destroy the intruder though. In the most violent and brutal way, but Edward and Carlisle Cullen stopped us.
Jacob Black phased back and joined the vampires. We learned then that the intruder didn't come alone. We were tense when the second vampire appeared but we stood still like Jacob had instructed.
They spoke for about three or four minutes. Introductions first, as the law of politeness demands these days. The two male vampires belonged to the Italian coven of the Volturi. They were awfully away from home and stepping on lands they knew they shouldn't but apparently, they were there on a mission.
They said their names were Leon, short for Napoleon, and Park. One was French, the other was Asian. Probably Korean. When they mentioned the reason for their trip to the Olympic Peninsula, things got drastically dangerous. For them at least. We had the numbers and some wolves, like EJ were eager to fight. One bad word and they were gone.
Unfortunately, Jacob ordered us to stand back and guard the perimeter so we only found out what was going on when chaos erupted inside the Cullens' property and we hurried there. Harry had snapped, phased and tried to attack the two Volturi. Jacob was forced to hold his son down and put him to sleep just for a few minutes. For precaution.
In the meantime, Napoleon and Park told the rest of their story. They had been watching the place where Harry and his girlfriend had been living in Chicago for the last two weeks on behalf of Scarlett Dale, a super powerful vampire who also belonged to the Italian coven. She was a friend, or sort of a friend because she was not like the rest of her coven and was actually trying to help Harry and Season. The objective was to protect them from another coven.
So Napoleon and Park observed and reported back to her every day. They were not supposed to leave the surveillance post at the same time, but today they had decided to hunt together and during their absence, the Romanians had successfully managed to infiltrate the house and take both Season and Sarah.
Nobody knew why they had taken Sarah because Season was their primary target, but Jacob decided that at that moment knowing the reasons wouldn't make any difference. And I agreed with him. It didn't matter why they had taken the girls. It only mattered how we were going to get them back.
Jacob had a plan but he didn't include me or any of the younger wolves in it. I would probably do the same thing if I were him, but that didn't mean I was okay with it. And it wasn't just me. Harry, who had just woken up, and William, were both pissed beyond belief because they too had been excluded from the plan.
"I'm not going to wait here, dad!" Growled Harry. Now that he had his twin brother backing him up, Harry was a lot more confident.
"You don't have a plan other than going after them, have you?" Jacob Black crossed his arms over his chest, trying to intimidate his son.
"No, I don't... but that doesn't mean I won't be useful."
"Actually... I agree with your father." Harry's mother said. "You're too stressed and you're letting your emotions taking over."
"I'm sorry I'm not as calm as you or dad are!" Harry said angrily. "You do realize that your daughter is missing too, right?" He said with a hint of irony.
Jacob and Leah weren't bothered by his comment.
"To bring your sister back we need to stay calm and follow a plan. We can't just run around blindly, searching for clues."
"Fine, dad! I'll follow the damn plan!"
"You're not going. I'm really sorry son, but that's an order." Jacob repeated. "I don't have time to waste trying to get you to follow my orders. Right now I need people to follow me without questioning my authority."
I could see Harry's fierce look and his teeth clenched. William was in the exact same position. They were angry. It was easier for William because he wasn't under his father's control since he had become alpha of his own pack, but Harry would not be able to fight an alpha command.
Or so we thought.
xxxxxxxxxx
Jacob's plan was simple. A group formed by seven wolves and the eight Cullens were to follow the two Volturi back to Chicago to inspect Edward's house. The rest of the wolves were staying in La Push protecting the Reservation. Their orders were clear: kill any vampire who had the audacity to enter our lands. Except if they were from the Denali coven. I learned then that the Denali were all vegetarian and they were friends of the Cullen family. We were not allowed to kill them. EJ was disappointed.
Jacob appointed Embry Call to be in charge of everything while he was gone, since both Seth and my father, his beta and gamma wolves, respectively, would be going to Chicago as well. As for Isaac, he gave his pack's leadership to his beta. Opposite Isaac, I didn't believe in Jay Morris' leading abilities, but I was okay with him staying just as long as I could go.
And on a last minute decision, I was accepted into the group as its eighth member. I would have to thank Harrison later.
We didn't find anything useful in Edward's house or the surroundings. Jacob's first order when we arrived was to sweep the perimeter for clues but the Romanians knew how to hide their tracks so my father and Isaac, who were the best trackers, came back empty-handed.
We did find Season's brother and sister inside an underground bunker with three dogs. They were all suffering from hypothermia but alive. Doctor Cullen said the three German Shepherds had actually saved the life of both children. He and his wife took the kids to the nearest Hospital and promised to keep in touch.
The big bulky Cullen and his wife took the dogs to the vet and after a few phone calls, Edward came back from the house with a dark expression in his marble-colored face.
Ian Pratt, an old man hired to take care of his property while Harry and Season were there, was missing. Plus, the blood inside the house, that had been used as a strategy to deceive the Romanians, wasn't just animal blood. There were a few drops of human blood too and the vampire was positive that it belonged to Sarah. So either she was dead or hurt.
"Why would they take a dead girl?" I questioned. No one bothered to answer but soon I knew the answer.
Vampires had needs. They could have killed Sarah to feed on her blood.
"We need to go now!" Harry pressed. "We can't stay here waiting."
"Your father's doing everything he can." Seth Clearwater said placing a hand on his nephew's shoulder. "Don't think for an instance that he'll stop searching for the girls."
"I know he's not going to stop, but... I don't think he understands..."
"He does." Seth grimaced. "When Joham took your mother to make experiments on her while she was pregnant, your father snapped. He ran after her scent for hours until he finally realized that he needed to put his shit together and ask the packs for help. Together we analyzed everything and made a rescue plan. And we managed to save your mom and Kim. Trust him, he knows what he's doing."
"I promised I'd keep her safe, Uncle Seth," Harry whispered.
"He has a valid reason for coming here, doesn't he?" My father asked me when no one was paying attention to us.
"Yes, he does." I conceded.
"They all do," Dad stated. "Except for you."
"I'm following orders."
"From him?" Dad moved his head in Harry's direction. "Do you want me to believe that you're following Harrison Black just because he needs comfort for having lost his girlfriend?"
"He's my alpha and he ordered me to come."
"I'm not that stupid, boy." I didn't reply. "Do you like her?"
"What?"
"Do you like Jacob's daughter?"
"No! Why would I like her?"
Sarah is a conceited little brat who thinks she is better than everyone else. I hate people like her. Plus she's Jacob Black's underaged daughter. For crying out loud!
My father was an idiot if he thought I harbored feelings for Jacob Black's only daughter. To be honest Sarah wasn't ugly. Actually, she was pretty for a girl her age but she was spoiled rotten and she was always trying to prove she was better than others. Besides, it was her fault I had turned into a giant dog.
"I've heard your conversation with Jay Morris before we left La Push."
Morris had tried to convince Jacob to let him come with us to Chicago. He had the nerve to go to the Black's house and tell Jacob that he cared more about Sarah than me, so he should come in my place. He even stated that because he was a wolf longer than me, he'd be more useful.
"So what? I just reminded him of some facts." I stated.
"You told him to leave Sarah alone. You even threatened him."
"I didn't threaten anyone."
Maybe I had but I wasn't going to admit that.
"I'm not deaf."
"Maybe you're getting senile, old man."
Dad laughed.
"I don't want trouble with Jacob. Especially regarding his daughter."
"Trust me, I don't want trouble either. I was just watching over my sister."
My father raised an eyebrow and smiled but I knew he wasn't smiling with happiness. In fact, he disliked Ella's imprint probably more than I did. I hadn't formed an opinion about imprinting yet, but the way it had tied my only sister down to a guy I had no sympathy for didn't turn me into its biggest fan.
That was the reason why I had confronted Jay Morris once he left the Black's place. He got angry when I accused him of playing with my sister and Sarah's feelings. We exchanged glares and a few insults and then we followed opposite directions.
Whoever thought I'd faced Jay Morris because I was jealous of him was sadly mistaken. I just didn't like him. Period. I didn't like to work with him, I didn't like to talk to him, and I didn't like him as a wolf. The way he was leading Sarah on was not right. And I hated the fact that one day he could end up being my brother-in-law.
My thoughts were interrupted by Edward Cullen who had returned with Jacob and Leah. They had gone to check the property's surveillance cameras.
"We've watched the footage and it was as I expected. They were three and they only took Sarah because she said she was Season."
Great! She's spoiled and stupid. Nice combination. The mind reader glanced at me but didn't say a word about my thoughts.
"She's a brave girl. I don't think they took her to feed which means she's probably still alive." He said. I had my doubts though it was nice of Edward Cullen to say that for sake of Sarah's parents and brothers.
"Can you see anything yet Alice?" Leah asked. "Even if it's just a glimpse..."
"I'm sorry... something seems to be blocking my visions."
"If Sarah phased, you won't be able to see a damn thing and that means they're in trouble," William said. "Why can't we just fly over to Italy and kill them all?"
"I'm not one hundred percent sure they're in Italy," Alice announced.
"Come on, Alice. It makes sense. Tomorrow's the day of Aro's supposed trial in Val Rosandra. The Romanians will be there and I'm sure Season and Sarah are going to be with them." Harry said. "We just need to get there."
"What we need is a fucking airplane," William added. "How about you ask that vampire who lent us the jet to go to Iceland?"
Alice nodded and her husband huffed impatiently but before he could even speak, she was already dialing a number.
xxxxxxxxxx
I had never traveled in an airplane before yet when I was seven years old I decided that I wanted to become a pilot. I started studying aircraft after that. My parents thought it was just a phase but my curiosity about airplanes only grew with time.
After a couple of years, I knew by heart all of the aircraft models of the US Air Force and the materials used to build them. Then I started studying commercial aircraft.
When I was fourteen I knew I wanted to fly. But now because of the supernatural mess I was involved in, I was bound to stay at the Reservation forever. Or so I thought until I put my eyes on a Cessna Horizon XL.
Alice Cullen had called a friend who had agreed to receive her so we all traveled back to Washington, more precisely to Portland. The vamp was called Jean-Piérre and he had previously helped the pack by lending his jet so Will could bring back his girlfriend from Iceland. I had no idea how she ended up there, but honestly, I didn't care.
Alice was optimistic but Jean-Piérre refused to help us again.
That meant we would have to wait another hour to take a commercial flight in Seatac. The problem was the time that the journey would take to reach its final destination: the Airport of Trieste, in Italy. It would take us between 14 to 20 hours to get there and we would have to stop twice to refuel. Plus Alice was only able to book three passages.
William knew where Jean-Piérre had his aircraft. He had been there before. He also knew there were no guards there. When Alice told us to follow her car to the Seatac Airport, William, Harry and I decided to follow our own plan and we ran straight to the place where Jean-Piérre's airplanes were.
When the pack realized what we were going to do, we already had a five-minute head start on them.
"Sarah said you're an expert in airplanes." Harry turned to me as we reached the jet-packed building. It was like a dream come true.
"I've studied aircraft... that doesn't mean I'm an expert," I confessed.
"Can you fly one of these or not?" He asked.
"In theory... yes."
I'd read all about the majority of the airplanes in front of us. Some were brand new models, others were older than our great-grandparents.
I ran to a Cessna Horizon XL. I knew that model like the palm of my hands plus I had tested it a few times in a simulator.
"We need someone to open the doors so I can take this baby to the runway."
That person would have to stay behind. William volunteered.
"I'll try to give you a head start. Don't let my sacrifice be in vain." He said dramatically. Then he hugged his brother and left running. "Try not to crash with my brother on board, Uley!" He shouted opening the door for us.
"Are you sure you know what you're doing?" Harry asked taking the co-pilot seat.
"We're about to find out."
It wasn't as easy as flying on a simulator but I did manage to put the Cessna in the air before the rest of the pack and the Cullens reached William on the ground.
A few minutes later we received a radio call from Edward Cullen. He told us we were going to be disinherited by our parents and probably murdered by Jean-Piérre if we ever managed to survive the flight and landing.
After a long pause, Edward agreed to help us. He gave us the coordinates to a small aerodrome near the Val Rosandra Natural Park and said he would contact us immediately if Alice managed to see something in her visions regarding Season and Sarah's whereabouts.
Traveling at the highest speed, we would still have to travel between eight to nine hours until reaching our destiny.
"I'm going to sleep for a few hours. I advise you to do the same." I warned Harry.
"What about the plane?"
"It's on autopilot. Don't be such a chicken."
"What about other planes?"
"Commercial airplanes usually don't fly over 45,000 feet. We're flying over 48,000 feet so we won't need to worry about anything."
"Yeah... but you said usually, what if..."
"An alarm will sound if any aircraft, commercial or Air Forces, comes in our direction. Stop worrying." I shut him up.
"Okay. Sorry." Harrison put his head back on the headrest and closed his eyes. I was also ready to fall asleep when he turned to me again. "I feel that we need to know each better." He stated. I simply groaned.
"What the hell are you talking about?"
"I just became your alpha a few hours ago and I don't know anything about you."
"Yes, you do."
"Okay... I know who you are. I know your family but..."
"It's enough."
"No, it's not. We're going to be a team from now on."
"It won't be for long."
"What do you mean?"
"I don't plan on being a wolf forever. Once this shit is over, I'm going to leave La Push."
"Really?"
"Yeah, really."
"Then why are you here?"
"You needed a pilot."
"I would've managed."
"Sure you would..." I sneered. "Fuck, you Blacks are all the same."
"Why did you choose me as your alpha?"
"You know why."
"Please enlighten me."
"I didn't want to be in the same pack as my father, I didn't want to be in the same pack as Morris and EJ, and didn't want to be William's third wheel. So my wolf chose you. It's not a big deal. Don't let it come to your head, Black."
"You want to know what I think?"
"Will you shut up afterward?"
Harrison smirked.
"I think you knew that you'd have better chances of finding Sarah by staying with me. I think you want to go rescue my sister and prove that you're better than Jay."
"The altitude is clearly affecting your head." I mocked him. "I don't need to prove myself to anyone, much less that moron!"
"You're worried about Sarah. That much I know. I've seen your face when Edward said that Sarah's blood was found inside the house. You cringed."
"That's because I hate blood."
"Why?"
"Because when I was a kid my dad brought someone hurt from the middle of the forest and that person was bleeding out so much he left a trail of blood on the grass and on my house's floor."
"How old were you?"
"I don't know... nine or ten years old..."
"You don't know who it was, do you?" He sounded surprised as if he knew something that I didn't.
"No, they never told me. Mom locked me up inside my bedroom although I could still feel the metallic scent. I'd never seen so much blood in my life." I closed my eyes again trying to forget that day and all that blood.
"We should definitely spend some time knowing each other. I mean... I'm your alpha."
"We're not in a relationship, Black. Plus I'm tired and I have to land this plane in a few hours."
"Come on, Levi."
"You sound like a girl," I whined. "Fine... My favorite color is grey. Happy now?"
Harry huffed impatiently. That was not what he had expected me to say. He wanted to know personal things not my favorite color.
"Fine... have some rest, Uley." He finally said when he realized I wasn't going to tell him anything. "I'll be inside your head in a few hours, anyway."
I didn't reply. Having someone in my head was still new to me.
"But you could just be a man and tell me."
"Tell you what, Black?"
"For how long are you in love with my sister?" I didn't have to open my eyes to know he was smirking.
Stupid Blacks.

Landing an aircraft is a lot more difficult in real life than in a simulator. For a split second, I thought I could do it but I was wrong. Very wrong. A pilot is taught to always remain calm. Panic is responsible for the majority of the accidents regarding airplanes and I had failed that lesson.
So we crashed. First I missed the small runway of the aerodrome we were supposed to land on. Then, I realized the aircraft had no fuel to turn around and make a second attempt. At that moment panic had settled in and Harry contacted Jasper so he could help me landing the plane.
I followed everything he said but I only had two options left after missing the runway: a golf court in a VIP Resort or the river. Amongst all the chaos with Harry yelling at me, Jasper shouting instructions on the radio and branches of the highest trees hitting the belly of the Cessna, I decided to try the river. Not because it would be easier to land on the water but because we could jump out of the aircraft before it hit the surface.
Jumping into the water would give us more chances of surviving the crash without broken bones.
We jumped when we were about 65 feet from the surface of the water. We didn't see the airplane crashing but when we resurfaced we saw the Cessna had lost its tail and right wing and was quickly sinking. Other smaller parts of the aircraft were floating in the water.
During the first few minutes, we simply gazed at the fallen airplane. Both of us were still astonished after jumping off of a plane. Harry had a small bleeding cut over his eyebrow. Either he had hit a rock underwater or a piece of the airplane had hit him. I had scratched my knee but apart from that, we were both fine.
"I thought you could land that thing." Harry looked intently at me.
"You asked me if I could fly it, you never mentioned anything about the landing."
Harry rolled his eyes at me.
"That vampire is going to kill us for sure," I commented watching the airplane going under the water. Fortunately, the Cessna was a small craft and we were flying unidentified which was illegal but convenient for us. Without eyewitnesses, the authorities would never know about that crash.
"Now, things are going to get serious," Harry warned me. His expression was now somber and severe, impelling me to pay attention to his words. "I know you fought well against Jane and Alec to protect Sarah the day you phased for the first time but don't think for a minute that this is going to be easy."
I rolled my eyes but I decided not to comment. The last thing I needed was an alpha who thought I couldn't handle the enemy.
"I need you to focus and remember every single detail of your training with Uncle Embry and the others."
"Yes, mom."
"I'm not joking, Levi." He stated gravely. "Do you remember the guy that bled out in your house when you were a kid?"
I nodded.
"That was me." He said making me gasp in surprise. "Will and I thought we could handle a vampire on our own. And she wasn't half as dangerous as the Romanians are. Plus we don't know how many vamps we're about to face although I know for sure that we're outnumbered."
"Then what's your plan? Do we wait for the others to arrive?"
"No. We don't have time to wait. We're going to find the leeches and get the girls back."
"So, you don't have a plan." I pointed out.
"I do. It's called the 'staying alive plan'."
"Right..."
"We kill every vampire that crosses our way. I'll be on the lead and you have to follow my instructions, okay?"
I found it interesting that he had used the word instructions instead of orders.
"Are you ready?" He asked, taking his shirt off. I nodded. "Take your shoelaces and tie your clothes to your ankle. Let's kick some ass!"
It felt weird to phase in that place. In La Push, I was home. In that forest, I felt misplaced. Harry was more at ease. He had been there before and apparently he was used to fighting in other places other than La Push.
'You'll get used to different battlegrounds sooner than you think.' I heard him through the mind link we now shared. 'Just try not to think too much about it. After all, we're in a different forest but it's still a forest.'
'It's not the fact that it's a different forest that worries me.' It was the fact that we didn't have help and we didn't have a way to go back home.
'I know.' Harry was still calm. 'We'll manage. Right now focus on finding the girls.'
That was easy to say. Isaac had taught us how to follow tracks but I didn't pay much attention.
'It's all about the scents.' Harry told me.
After a while, I managed to focus on the task ahead. Suddenly a memory assaulted my mind. I was in a forest, not in La Push, in Whiskey Cove, Sarah was asleep in my arms wearing my jacket. Somehow I could feel her scent as if she was standing right next to me.
'Look who slept with my sister.' Harry commented playfully.
'Don't start, Black. We fell asleep. Nothing happened.'
'Don't worry, Uley. I saw your thoughts. Though it's still a bit awkward to know that you remember my sister's scent so clearly.' He sounded amused and that annoyed me.
'Next time, I'll make sure to sleep with your girlfriend too so I can remember her scent as clearly as I remember your sister's.'
Harry growled, displeased about my comment. He thought something and tried to block his thoughts the next instant but it was too late.
'So, she's not your girlfriend anymore.' I stated. It was my turn to be amused. 'Jacob Black's firstborn got married in secret. I'm impressed. I would expect that from William but not you.'
'Focus, Levi!'
'Yes, almighty alpha!'
'We've got company.' Harry warned me. 'You better be prepared.'
When I fought against the Volturi in Whiskey Cove I felt how powerful those creatures could be. Both Alec and Jane had mental powers and they had both used them on me that day. It was the adrenaline of my first fight on the day I had morphed for the very first time that allowed me not to succumb to the pain. That and the help of Jacob's pack. I had feigned acknowledgment but I knew that my father attacked the Volturi when Jane came at me.
I had heard him tell mom that I had done pretty well for a new wolf but today things were different. For one, I didn't have him or any member of Jacob's wolfpack to back me up. Actually, I should be the one backing up Harrison since he was my alpha.
'There are two of them.' Harry informed. 'Remember what Uncle Embry said about fighting a vampire?'
'Never let them put their arms around us?'
'Exactly.' Harry confirmed. 'And avoid being bitten. One bite doesn't kill you, but sure stings like hell.'
'Roger that.'
My wolf was ready to do some damages to these bloodsuckers but the human part of me was scared. Failure was my biggest fear right now.
'You're not going to fail, Levi. You were genetically made to kill vampires.'
'But I never killed one before.'
'Then you can start today.' He was trying to raise up my spirit. 'Look, just let your instincts take over and don't shut off your mind. I need full access to your thoughts.'
'I thought we already had a mind connection.'
'And we do, but that doesn't mean I'll be able to read your mind in the middle of a battle. Things tend to get too intense when we're fighting. When you first join a pack, part of your training should include mind communication with the older wolves, and especially with your alpha. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to do that which means that the mind link between us might vanish in certain occasions.'
'What do I do if that happens?' The idea of being on my own fighting off a leech was suddenly quite upsetting.
'Think of the moment when your wolf accepted mine as his alpha.'
'Okay. I can feel the stench already.'
'Yeah... pretty nasty, huh?'
'Yep.'
'You just wait until you have to cut them off with your own teeth.'
That thought made me feel nauseous.
'They're going separate ways.' Harry warned me. 'You go left. We'll regroup as soon as we take care of them, okay?'
'Okay.'
Harry and I took opposite directions. He went right and I went left, after our enemies. Right now they had already realized we were following them.
I was after a petite vampire. Soon enough I realized it was a woman. She had short and curly red hair and was wearing green pants and a beige sweatshirt. She was pretty fast but I wasn't going to accept such an easy defeat, so I pushed my legs harder and faster.
Then when I was almost reaching her, she jumped and let herself gracefully dance among the high tree branches above me. I couldn't catch her if she kept flitting from branch to branch.
Sensing my frustration, the vampire stopped and looked down.
"Wanna catch me, wolfy?" She asked mockingly. I snarled, baring my teeth at her. "If only you had wings..." She laughed.
'Bitch!'
'You don't need wings, Levi. Use the trees!'
I followed Harry's instructions and with an impulse I jumped, my hind legs hit a tree trunk and propelled me into the direction of my enemy. Caught by surprise, she was unable to avoid the impact and we fell rapidly to the ground, rolling.
Fortunately, she had hit the floor first, breaking my fall.
"You motherfucker! I'm going to kill you!" She yelled trying to get away from my teeth. I had her pinned but before I could rip off her head, she kicked me in the abdomen and sent me flying.
"Who the fuck do you think you are?" She yelled again, brushing off her clothes. "I'm so going to extra charge Yordan for this!"
I was preparing myself to attack the leech when another one arrived. I had seen him through Harry's eyes. Suddenly I realized I couldn't hear my alpha anymore.
"Where's the girl, Luc? Did you find her?"
"She's hiding, babe." The male vampire said. "We'll find her as soon as we finish this one off too."
'Shit! Harry, are you there? I hope you're not dead, you asshole! You're supposed to be stronger than this fucking vamp! Come on, Black!'
I couldn't believe that Harry had been killed by that vampire. Besides if Harry was dead why hadn't I felt it? We were supposed to be connected. And why hadn't I heard him howl for help? If he needed assistance, he would've called.
"This one looks even more pathetic than the one I got rid of." The vampire male said walking forward.
"Be careful, he can fight." The vampire woman warned her partner.
"Did he give you a hard time, babe?"
"He threw me to the floor. I got dirt all over me." The woman whined.
"I'll make him pay, you just watch." He promised. "Now it's between us, you filthy dog!"
I sized up the vamp. He wasn't as tall as the Cullen's giant and he probably wasn't as strong either but I had to be careful. Vampires were deceptive.
When he dashed at me, I moved to the side and shoved him against a tree. He recovered fast and attacked again. His efforts to immobilize me were unsuccessful though.
"Luc... come on, we need to find that stupid bitch. Yordan won't pay us if we let her escape."
"Go on ahead, babe. I'll finish this in a minute."
Who were they talking about? Could it be Sarah or Season? If so, that meant they really were on that forest.
We fought for a while. None of us was able to inflict permanent damages to the other but then I slipped and he managed to grab my neck with his left hand.
I braced myself for the pain but I never felt the blow. The next thing I knew he was being tossed away from me. He screamed a hand full of profanities as he got up and then I saw a russet shadow lunging for his throat.
The vampire's head was separated from his body and I heard a scream coming from the vampire woman. She had witnessed it all and was consumed by rage. Since I was closer to her, she charged against me. I felt the impact and then I blacked out.
"Levi! Wake up! Come on! We've got things to do. We can't stay here."
I rubbed my head and sat down straight. Harry was crouching in front of me.
"What happened?" I asked him. "Aren't you dead?"
"Do I look dead to you?" He asked standing up.
"No," I said. "Fuck..." I blurted when I realized I was naked.
"Hey... it's fine. There's no need to be shy." Harry laughed slightly.
"I'll never get used to this," I complained putting on my clothes. "You're hurt." I pointed to his right thigh. There was blood dripping to the floor.
"It's just a cut."
"Seems like a nasty one."
"It'll heal."
"So... that vamp was stronger than you thought, huh?"
"Who? That one?" Harry pointed to a pile of ash on the forest floor. "It wasn't him. Or her." He motioned his head to another pile of ash. "They were average fighters. Before I burnt her, she said they were hired to babysit a human girl for a vampire named Yordan."
"Only one girl?"
"Yes."
"Season?" I tried.
"My sister."
"How do you know?"
"She described her to me. Plus, only Sarah would run off from two vampires."
"She's a fucking idiot," I whispered though I didn't mean it in a bad way.
"Okay... now, I need to go and rescue Season. She's not far from here. I need you to take care of this." Harry put something cold on my hands. I almost threw up when I realized it was a leg. I dropped it and Harry laughed.
"Fuck! What's that?"
"That's the reason why I didn't come to help you when I should."
"What do you mean?"
"I was going to kill Luc when I sensed two more leeches in the area. I made Luc believe he had mortally wounded me and I waited for them to come to me. I recognized them immediately. They were here twenty days ago. Meet, Amelia and Andrei from the Romanian coven."
Harry lifted two heads from the floor. They had their red eyes open and their tongues were missing.
"Fuck!" I cursed. "What the fuck, Black? Are you kidding me?"
"They're vamps. They don't die unless we burn them."
"I know... but you don't have to... keep their heads as trophies."
"These aren't trophies. These are our passports out of this place with Season and my sister." He said confidently. "Now pick up that damn leg so I can explain my plan to you."
"It's gross!" I exclaimed in disgust. "I don't want it!"
"Listen up, Uley! They have my wife only a few miles away from here and I'm going to get her. I'll make a bargain... these two for her."
"Will they accept?"
"Amelia is an elder. Vlad and Stefan will want her back."
"All of her? Or just her head?" I dared to ask.
"All of her, of course."
"And the rest of the bodies?"
"I dismembered them into several pieces and tossed them as far as I could in several directions. Vampires can assemble their bodies but it will take a while until that happens."
"And what do you need me to do?"
"I need you to stay here. If they agree with my proposal and let Season go, I'll join you, if they refuse, I want you to burn that leg. Make a huge fire so they can see I'm not bluffing."
"What about Sarah?"
"I'll try to find out what happened to her. If she's in the forest, I'm sure we'll find her."
It wasn't a bulletproof plan, but at least we had something to bargain with. Now it was up to the Romanian elders.

Information: I was supposed to post this chapter in early August but technology screwed me over. I had 89% of the chapter written when the disk where I had saved the document kind of broke. I spent a week trying to recover everything but I was unsuccessful so I had to start all over again. I'm sorry for the delay. Hopefully, this won't happen again.
Take care,
Karisan
