Book I – The Third
Isaac Black
78. The date
I took three showers before mum and dad got home and sprayed myself with cologne before going downstairs. Mum left just a few minutes after she arrived. It had something to do with the Small Council. Things were kind of tense ever since my brother had started dating Rhea White, and they were getting worse now that they were engaged.
"And they're not even married yet." I heard mum say before closing the door behind her.
"Don't destroy anything, Leah. We can't afford that right now." Dad said waving at her as I joined him by the window. She just drove away, irritated. "I hope this meeting goes well..." He muttered to himself.
Ever since I had phased, I noticed dad becoming more laid-back around me, before he was always stressed and tense. It wasn't a shock when he offered to make us breakfast. However I had the feeling he had an ulterior motive to do that.
He studied me from the corner of his eye while he cooked and I saw him grinning.
"So... how was your birthday party?" Dad finally asked.
"Alright." I knew this was going to happen. Parents only ask how things went when they suspect something has happened.
"You know you can tell me anything, right son?"
"Sure." I diverted my eyes from him. He stared at me for a while but after a few seconds, he focused on his cooking again.
"Look, if you think for a moment that I don't know what's happening in my own house, you're sadly mistaken, Isaac." Dad started. "I know what's going on with Will, I know what's bothering Harry, and I know what happened last night."
I sniffed the air trying to smell Sophia's scent but I could only smell the food being cooked and the cologne I had put on earlier.
"How?" I asked not totally convinced he knew the whole truth.
"It wasn't the scent that gave you away." He grinned again. "It's the look on your face. I used to have that look on my face too..." He hesitated. "When I was dating your mother."
"Uncle Paul said you never dated mum,"
"Uncle Paul is an idiot." He stated matter of factly. "Now, I just hope you're not like your older brothers and..."
"Yes, dad... I'm not like Will or Harry, so for the love of all that's sacred, spare me."
"I wasn't going to talk about that,"
Did he really think I was that naïve? I knew he was going to lecture me about going to parties, staying out all night, and most definitely spending the night with a girl.
"I was going to ask you if you know what a relationship means. I mean, I know you have a high IQ and you're mature for your age and all, but I still wonder if..."
"I know what it means, dad." I stopped him. "I know well enough."
"Okay but, do you know what it means when you're a wolf?" He added.
"I know what it means," I said again but he noticed my voice faltering in the end.
Everything was different for a wolf. And I had entered this life only a couple of months ago. He had the right to ask me that question. And I had the feeling he knew the reason why my voice had faltered. It was because even though I knew the dangers of having a relationship with someone at this point, I was willing to risk it despite the ugly consequences.
"So you know what will happen to the girl you're dating if you find your alpha female, right?"
I didn't answer. Finding an alpha female would be as bad as finding an imprint. We had been warned about that. Sam Uley had been the first wolf to imprint. Back then he was dating my mum. It was weird thinking about them together, but the truth was that it was Sam's imprint that had allowed my parents to become close. Other wolves had imprinted. Jared on Kim, Uncle Paul on Aunt Rachel, Uncle Embry on Aunt Rebecca. And there was also Quil and Claire, the oddest imprinted couple of all times.
Now things were okay but years ago, Quil and Claire's relationship was taboo, especially because there was a 14-year-old gap between them. Claire was only two when Quil imprinted on her but their romance only blossomed when she was in college.
Imprinting on a baby was rare but had actually happened two more times. Justin and Josh imprinted on Jared's twin girls but because at some point they stopped phasing, their relationship with the girls never evolved. They both cared about Julia and Jaelle but there were no romantic feelings involved. Actually Josh had even imprinted a second time on Hannah Marsh which had led to many questions and no answers. It was still a mystery why Josh had imprinted on Hannah who wasn't even a local girl.
Uncle Embry and Aunt Becca had faced some obstacles too. She was married to another man and they were going to start a family when Uncle Embry imprinted on her. Aunt Becca's ex-husband only accepted the divorce several years later which was a constant source of stress for the couple, especially after David's birth.
Recently Jay, who was sort of my second-in-command had also imprinted on Sam's daughter, Ella. Unfortunately, he had a brief relationship with my sister and now she was distraught.
I could tell that imprinting wasn't all sunshine and rainbows despite the happiness it brought to both wolf and imprintee. We all knew that imprinting could destroy people, even families. And finding a mate worked the same way because wolves mate for life and apparently a wolf can't fight off the bond with a mate the same way he can't fight off the imprint.
"Your brother is already in deep shit." Dad added. "He got married, he's going to have a kid... if he finds his mate, this girl and the child are going to suffer."
So he did know about Season's pregnancy.
"At least the girl William knocked up is his mate,"
"I didn't get married, dad. And I didn't knock up anyone."
"Yet." He said. "You like this girl, don't you?"
"Yes, I do," I answered truthfully.
"Then remember that one day you're probably going to break her heart." Dad wasn't grinning anymore. He was serious. Despite the coldness of his words, I knew he was only worried about me. "I'm not saying you have to break up with her right now. I'm just asking you to be careful and try not to get hurt, okay?"
"Sure," I nodded.
"Good. Now... was she impressed?"
"I need to go..." I excused myself.
"Come on... It was just an innocent question." Dad said. "Don't you want breakfast?" He said putting the scrambled eggs on the plates.
"I'm not that hungry," I stated walking backward.
"You've already made me lose a hundred bucks, so the least you can do is give me some details."
"Bye, dad. I'll see you later."
Fortunately dad's phone started to ring. It was mum and she was upset. Apparently Hal White had showed up with both his daughters and his wife at the meeting to discuss details about Rhea's condition and the upcoming wedding. I had no doubts that dad would have to go and join the Small Council to avoid mum from killing one of the Whites.
"Leah, calm down. Is Quil with you?"
"No, he's not here yet. The nerve of these people!" I heard mum say. "They're all here demanding money for the wedding! Can you believe that?"
That was my cue to leave. I had a plan for today but I needed a favor and the only person I could ask for help was not in a very good mood. Actually ever since he had been forbidden to see Rhea, William was always in a bad mood. I understood his point of view. They were engaged and she was expecting his baby, so it was stupid to forbid them to see each other. But as long as Vanessa White controlled her family, the feud between the Blacks and the Whites would never end.
"Still looks like a dump, right?" William asked me when I arrived at his place. Last week he had bought the old Armstrong's house. It was a small place that needed a lot of work but once remodelled it would be enough for Will, his wife, and their kid.
"You should've asked for help."
"If I do that the Whites will crucify me. They think I'm useless already."
"We're family, Will. Besides who cares about what they think?"
William shrugged. He was probably thinking that he had made a mistake buying that house.
"What are you doing here, Isaac? Shouldn't you be resting after such a busy night?" He grinned. It was the same tone and the same grin my dad had given me.
"I'm not that tired," I said trying to sound undisturbed.
"So, you're here to help me?"
"Sort of. I need a favor from you." I confessed.
"A favor?"
"I'm taking Sophia out for lunch. In a real date..." I began. "But I need someone to cover my shift this afternoon and since you're free I thought you could help me out."
"A real date, huh? So what did you two do last night?"
"Are you going to help me or not?"
"I'll help you if you help me."
"With what?"
"I need you to phase and show me what you did last night. I can't win the five hundred dollars I bet last night without real proof."
"You bet five hundred dollars on me getting laid?"
"Yep." He said happily.
"And who entered the bet?"
"Everyone."
That was why dad had asked me for details. He wanted proof.
"Everyone?"
"Everyone except for Harry. He's too righteous."
"I'm not going to tell you shit, Will."
"Come on... Don't be such a baby. This betting thing is a tradition, you know that by now, right?"
"Yes, but it's not right betting about this."
"Forget about your date then." He said harshly.
"I was hoping we could come to an agreement."
"If you agree to phase, I'll agree to patrol this afternoon so you can gon on a date. That's the only agreement I'll make."
"If you agree to patrol this afternoon, I'll agree to share some information regarding Rhea. You can take it or leave it." I bargained.
William sharpened his eyes and came to stand right in front of me.
"What are you talking about?" He asked.
"Do we have a deal?"
"Did something happen to her?"
"I'll tell you everything if you take my shift."
"Isaac..." He said menacingly.
I stood my ground and faced him directly. It took me by surprise realizing that I didn't feel intimidated by William even though he was older and taller than me.
Not much taller. I took notice. In the past William and Harry were at least thirty centimeters taller than me but now I was almost as tall as they were.
"I wouldn't hold information from you if something bad had happened," I said and my brother finally relaxed.
"Fine. I'll take your shift. Now tell me!"
I rose my arm so we could shake hands and then I decided to tell him.
"She's home alone."
William glared at me.
"That's the information you have for me?"
"Yes."
"You little creep!"
"When was the last time you talked to her alone?"
"I..." He hesitated. "I don't know..."
"Then what are you waiting for? The Whites are having a meeting with the Small Council."
"I'm sure they left someone behind."
"Hal is there with his wife and daughters. Mum's pissed at them. Trust me, Rhea's alone and if I were you, I'd be taking this chance."
William ruffled my air and left running.
"My shift starts at noon!" I yelled at him.
"I'll be there!" He yelled back.
I had the coast clear. Now all I had to do was finding the perfect present for Sophia and pick her up at her place. I already had a reservation at a restaurant in Astoria. That alone was going to surprise her, but I wanted to give her something special too.
Ever since she had left her job to help her parents at the flower shop, Sophia had left music behind. And she loved music almost as much as she loved dancing, so I bought her an acoustic guitar and I traveled to Astoria hoping to spend the perfect day with my girlfriend.
Driving non-stop, it would take me about three hours to get to Astoria following US-101 route. I would rather save some time and run there as a wolf but that meant I would have to ditch the car and I couldn't do that. What kind of a boyfriend shows up for the first date without a car?
When I was driving through the city of Raymond I realized I hadn't slept at all. Sophia and I had been on the cliffs for two hours, then I took her home around midnight. We got there around three in the morning and then I had to drive all the way back to La Push.
I wasn't tired but I could use some sleep. If I took a nap right now, I would still make it on time to pick up Sophia at noon. I parked the car in the parking area of a small motel and closed my eyes.
When I woke up, an hour later, I resumed the journey to Astoria. I only had about 52 miles to travel now. The Felton's Flower Shop was located at one of the busiest streets in Astoria but the family's house was secluded at Lexington Avenue, surrounded by a forest area. Their closest neighbors lived one mile away up north the Felton's property. I was surprised when I noticed that no one seemed to be at home.
Sophia had a younger sister called Valentine and an older brother called Caden. Both still lived at home with their parents. As far as I knew Caden didn't have a job and Valentine was too young to work. Someone should be there.
I knocked a few times on the front door and since no one opened it I decided to call Sophia. No one answered the phone. Circling the house I tried to find any indication that could tell me where the residents were but I found nothing except for tires' marks on the driveway.
Could they have left the house for a family gathering? Why would Sophia not warn me if that was the case? I mean we had made plans for the afternoon.
I was about to go back to my car when a red Rover stopped right next to me. A young man stepped out and suddenly I was being pushed against the hood of my car.
"What the fuck did you do to my sister!?" He yelled at me. "Where is she?"
Callie and her husband arrived the next minute and managed to push their eldest son away from me.
"Cade! Let him go!" Callie said. "It's just Isaac! He's a friend!"
"I don't care who he is! I saw his car leaving our house at three in the morning! That's when Sophia disappeared!"
