Book I – The Third

80. Sarah's comeback

Dad had always told us about mom's temper. Initially, I thought he was overreacting but now I wasn't so sure. She was pacing back and forth in our backyard after summon me and the twins for a small chat. Will and Harry were sitting down on the stair porch. I was leaning against the balcony.

"You're not going to screw this up!" She said fiercely. Although she was talking to the three of us, her eyes were focusing only on William. He was calm now but we all knew what that meant. He was like a serene ocean before a tsunami. Coming to think of it, the similarities between William, Sarah, and mom were amazing. They had an impulsive side that could obliviate an entire town.

Less than an hour ago William had almost destroyed the house of his soon to be mother-in-law. Luckily Harry had arrived just in time to calm his twin brother, giving dad enough time to pull him out of the house and into the forest where he phased and lashed his fury in the nearby trees.

Scared by Will's outburst, Verena White decided to call the Council. Dad had tried to persuade her to change her mind, but she didn't. She said that William had always been a troublemaker and that she didn't know if he was capable of taking care of her daughter and a child. She also said that she was entitled to warn the Council about Will's behavior because our community could only function if everyone followed the rules. So in her perspective, she was doing our community a favor.

At the moment, dad, Sam, Grandma Sue, and Granddad Billy were gathered with Verena and Hal White.

"They won't punish me," Will said confidently.

"Yes, they will." Mom opposed.

"No, they won't!"

"They will. That's the only way."

"What the hell do you mean?"

We all felt William's demeanor changing. He got up from the stairs and faced mom.

"If the High Council rejects a punishment, the Whites will play their best card. They will accuse us of favoritism. In case you didn't notice, three members of the High Council are your direct relatives, and Sam is your cousin too. They will say the Council is compromised and unfit to apply community standard rules. What do you think will happen then?"

Mom was probably right and the three of us knew it.

"How the hell should I know?"

"They're going to demand the election of a new High Council and then they'll decide on a punishment for you." Mom said with a serious expression. "Your only chance is to hope your father get you off the hook by making a deal with Verena and Hal."

"What will he propose?" I asked.

"Something Will won't like. But he'll try to avoid expelling him from La Push."

"Expel me?" William argued. "They can't do that! I'm a Quileute! I live here! I'm going to be a father!"

"You disobeyed the rules! The Whites asked you not to meet Rhea alone and you did the exact opposite!" Mom raised her voice. "You can't do things like that and not expect a punishment!"

"They're being stupid! Why can't I be with Rhea alone? She's my girlfriend! She's pregnant with my son or daughter! They can't expect me to follow their stupid rules!"

"We had an agreement, William. Until the wedding, you could not be alone with her."

"Fuck the Whites! I have the right to be with Rhea whenever and wherever I want! They're lucky I haven't phased and chewed their asses!"

"You do that and you're going to jail." Mom warned him.

"Let them try!"

"Your challenging attitude is going to be your downfall."

"I don't care anymore." William shrugged.

"Your father and the rest of the Council will stall, so any punishment you receive will be announced after Dana performs your sister's ritual."

Sarah was the priority now. Tomorrow night, Dana Hansen was going to perform a ritual to make my sister go back to her normal self. According to her, it was a ritual that required the presence of important people to Sarah such as her parents, grandparents, siblings, boyfriend, best friends, etc. We had no idea how the ritual would work but mom was pretty confident that Dana wouldn't fail us.

"You all need to be there otherwise the ritual won't work and Dana's efforts will be wasted." Mom continued.

"I think Sarah only needs time." William put in. "Besides I think I prefer things this way."

Mom glared at him.

"At least she stopped whining." He added in his defense.

"Don't screw things up for your sister!"

"Calm down, mom." Harry, who had been in silence until now, finally spoke. "Will won't ruin anything, I'll make sure of it."

"Good. Now... you." She turned to me. "What's going on between you and Callie's daughter?"

"I... we... I'm not sure." I admitted.

"They had sex. Isn't that obvious?" William rolled his eyes.

"Language." Mom warned him. "And I didn't ask you, I asked Isaac."

"I asked her on a date last night," I said trying to fix the damages Will had made with his comment. "She accepted but when I went there to pick her up, she was gone."

"Did you know she had powers?"

"No."

"She has powers?" Harry asked. "Like Season?"

"Dana... I mean Odessa said she's a Sealer." Mom explained the twins. "It means she can seal the soul of a person inside a living body."

Harry and William didn't seem convinced.

"You believe that?" Will asked.

"I have no reason not to."

"Mom, you're being naïve. You've been played by this girl! She's not being possessed by an old lady, she can't talk to the dead because when you die, you die! She's been lying to you from the start about prophecies and catastrophes."

"I used to be like you. I used to be skeptic about these things but... this is different."

"Why?" I asked.

"I don't know. I can't explain." She admitted. "Right now, we need to help Sarah. She can't stay on wolf-mode forever. I want my daughter back."

"Where does this leave Sophia?" I wanted to know. "Can I tell her the truth about us?"

"Not yet. After your sister's ritual, I want you to join the Feltons in Astoria."

"Why?"

"You can't let her control her powers."

I knew what mom was trying to do. If Sophia never controlled her soul-sealing ability, nothing would happen to Dana. Because despite what Odessa had said, mom didn't trust her and she probably thought the old lady was trying to steal her great-granddaughter's body.

"No matter what Callie wants, you can't let Sophia control her powers, okay?"

I nodded. I doubted Sophia wanted to control whatever power she had. She liked being normal and she never believed in her mother's gift of divination. By having a relationship with her, I was prepared to lie and never tell Sophia the truth about the supernatural. Now everything was different and I didn't know where we stood anymore.

It wasn't easy to gather all the people needed to perform the comeback ritual for Sarah, so the ritual started two hours later than scheduled. We went to the forest, to a place where no one could see us and then Dana called each one of us, chanting up to the sky to an unknown entity.

The ones who gave her life, Leah Clearwater and Jacob Black.

The ones who share her blood, Harrison, William, and Isaac Black.

The ones who protect her, Seth Clearwater, Quil Ateara, Embry Call, and Sam Uley.

Her love interest and the one who's in love with her, Jay Morris.

Her rival, Ella Uley.

Sarah was given a herbal tea and quickly dozed off. We all sat down circling her sleeping form while Dana kneeled beside her. She chanted a few more words in an ancient language, and then she asked us to drink something, close our eyes and think about Sarah. The objective was to call her human spirit back into her body.

Jay and Ella were the first to fall into the ground. They were both sleeping. Then a few minutes later we all felt dizzy and we blacked out too. When I got to open my eyes I saw that my family and friends were still asleep. I could hear a girl crying and I tried to lift my head only to feel like I had been hit by a truck. Crawling into a sitting position, I saw Dana crying over Sarah. First I panicked thinking that somehow this ritual had killed my sister but then I noticed she was still breathing.

"It didn't work," Dana explained. "Something's wrong... I tried my best but her wolf spirit is still in charge."

"It's okay," I said. "It's not your fault."

I thought about William's words on the previous day. Maybe Dana was a hoax. Maybe she was playing us for fools. But if that was the case why was she so upset?

"I don't understand. I did everything right. I know these chants by heart." Dana kept telling.

Then all of a sudden, Dana's white eyes turned dark. I flinched when she spoke again because that wasn't her voice anymore. Dana's great-grandmother had just taken her place.

"Stupid girl! You should've let me handle this." She reprimanded. "You!" She turned to me. "Get the boy who's behind those bushes! Bring him here!"

That's when I noticed we were not alone. Someone had followed us. Luckily it was one of us.

"I can go there by myself," Levi said getting out of his hiding place and joining me.

"You shouldn't be here," I told him. "You probably ruined the ritual."

"Do you think this will bring your sister back?" He asked in a mocking voice.

"Actually, the ritual didn't work because he wasn't here," Odessa said. "But now that he is, I can fix this."

She handed Levi a cup with the same drink she gave us but he didn't take it.

"I'm not drinking this!"

"If you want to help this girl, you'll drink it."

"What is it?" He asked.

"Something that will help your memory."

"Why did Isaac wake up but they didn't?" He pressed on, pointing to everyone on the forest floor.

She shrugged.

"Are you going to drink that or what?" Odessa questioned. She was upset about Levi's hesitation.

"I'm not sure if I can trust you." Levi pointed out.

"My sister can't stay like this forever, Levi. Just drink it!"

"Fine... but if this is poison, I'll kill you myself, Black!"

Levi drank the tea and it only took about thirty seconds until he passed out.

"Why do you think this will work now?"

"My great-granddaughter thought Sarah's love interest and the one who's in love with her was the same person. That's why the ritual didn't work the first time." She explained while making another tea.

"Jay imprinted on Ella. He's not in love with Sarah anymore." I understood. "And Levi..."

Odessa grinned.

"This one is for you. You have to be unconscious to call her spirit back. I'm sure she'll listen to you this time."

I knew this tea was different from the first one from the smell. Like Levi, I felt a bit unsure. Odessa seemed to be helping us but she secretly had her plan. She wanted Sarah to leave La Push and go to the Makah Reservation to marry a local boy.

"What did you put in it?"

"Herbs. They'll help you relax and they'll trigger your memory."

"Why are you preparing another one?"

"This one is for Sarah."

"Why?" I asked while drinking the tea Odessa had given me.

"Let's just say that I can't wait two years for your sister to enter the mating season. This is just a boost."

"You can't do that!" I tried to get up but my legs gave in. I felt dizzy. The damn tea was working already.

"The sooner she gets into heat, the sooner your parents will send her to me."

"Sarah's only seventeen. She's too young to get married and have kids."

"I gave birth to my first son when I was eighteen."

"I won't..." I was feeling sleepy. "I will stop you..."

"You won't remember this conversation when you wake up."

And then I slept. And I dreamed. I dreamed of Sarah and me when we were kids. The way she fought my fights at school when other kids were mocking me, the way she consoled me when everyone was calling me a nerd, the way she encouraged me to tell our parents I wanted to leave La Push and go to the University. Sarah was my best friend. I loved her and cherished her. And I wanted her to come back. I wanted to apologize for having lied to her. It was time to have her back.

"Where's your girlfriend?" Will asked sitting next to me on the bench later that night.

"Home."

"So, that's why you're sulking here in a corner while everyone else is celebrating, right?"

"No."

"One-word sentences... nice one, Isaac."

"Leave me alone."

"Nah... It's fun watching you sulking,"

"I'm not sulking."

I was. But not because Sophia wasn't there. It was because after Sarah's ritual no one had believed me when I said that Odessa Clearview, Dana's great-grandmother had done something to my sister. I just couldn't remember what.

"I didn't make it up," I muttered.

"Sarah's fine. The ritual worked. Why are you still talking about that?"

"Because Odessa is playing us."

"Odessa doesn't exist! She's dead." Will recalled.

"The ritual didn't work the first time. She took over Dana's body and she did something to Sarah!"

"That's not possible, Isaac. When we woke up everything was fine. Nothing was out of place and Sarah woke up eight hours later. In my opinion that was a success!"

"You think I'm lying?"

"No, Isaac. I think you hallucinated. That tea was pretty strong." For once, Will sounded serious.

No one believed me but I knew something was wrong. I could feel it in my bones.

"Look... For the record, I don't trust that girl completely either, but she brought our sister back, and I'm grateful for that. I wanted to believe you, kid. I really do. But... Dana was herself when we woke up and Levi was nowhere to be found unlike your version of the story."

I remember talking to Levi at some point but my memory was a bit jumbled.

"Enjoy the bonfire, Isaac. I'll be doing the same. After all, this might be my last night in La Push."

Tomorrow Will was going to face the High Council. They had decided to punish him but if the punishment didn't please the Whites, they could invoke an old custom and expel William from La Push.

"Shit... she's back on the drinking table..." Will said tiredly. "It's your turn now."

I got up and left my brother to join Season. Harry hadn't told anyone about Season's pregnancy except for me and William. So we were taking turns to make sure she didn't drink since if Harry asked her not to drink it would sound suspicious. Luckily when I got there she was pouring orange juice into her glass.

"Can I get you something?" I asked Season. "A hotdog? A burger?"

"No, thanks. I'm good." She said. "Do I have 'starving' written on my forehead?" She asked bemused. "Everyone seems to think I need to eat as much as a bear or something..."

"Sorry... it's just a habit we have... we like to treat our guests the best way possible."

"Well, I appreciate your effort, Isaac but I'll eat when I'm hungry." She smiled and poured more juice. "So... what's their story?"

I followed Season's line of vision and watched my parents near the fire, cooking hotdogs together.

"Their story?" I didn't know exactly what to tell Season. She already knew about the wolf gene and the pack. She also knew my mother was a rarity amongst wolves, just like Rhea and Sarah.

"The way your mother looks at your father... it's like he's the only man on Earth."

"Uh... I never realized that. But they do love each other so I guess it's normal, right?"

"It's the same way Rhea White looks at William but it's not the way your aunts look at their husbands."

Because they're not mates. I thought. Season was extremely smart for someone who had been initiated in the supernatural so recently.

"How did they meet?"

"They lived here their whole lives. It's a small community and their fathers were best friends."

"High school sweethearts?"

"That would be Jared and Kim. My parents weren't even in the same class. They..."

"They got drunk one night and the next thing they knew Aunt Leah was knocked up. So they got married and then because they had to kill some time and since they were already married... they had alpha-boy here, Sarah and JJ." Season and I turned around to see EJ standing behind us.

"You're so obnoxious, EJ," I said noticing Season's shocked expression. "That's not what happened."

That was one of the rumors that had spread through La Push when my mother got pregnant for the first time. Since mom and dad weren't a couple, people assumed they had had a one-night stand. That was also the story Vanessa White kept telling around in the Reservation because, apparently, she had a big crush on dad back then. But she couldn't be furthest from the truth.

"I would take that as an insult if I knew what that shitty word means." My cousin faked a laugh. "But you're right. That's not what happened. Aunt Leah got knocked up because she was in heat and that's what the alpha pair of a pack is for. They fuck and breed puppies. That's why they have more kids than everyone else and that's why the White girl is pregnant too... It's a twisted breeding program if you ask me but I guess you can't go against nature. When the alpha male finds its mate it's impossible to set them apart."

I had no idea where that came from. Maybe EJ had been watching too many tv shows about wild packs or maybe he had been listening to my thoughts about all the conversations I had with Doctor Cullen. We had discussed this topic quite recently.

"I guess it's good to be the alpha." He kept going. "You get to boss everyone around, you give alpha commands, you have a fuck partner for life. Wolf rules don't allow incest, do they? Because there is only one female available right now and it would be awkward watching you and Harry fight for the right to mate with your kid sister!" Those were EJ's last words before Harry's massive fist punched his lights out however, the damage was already done.

xxxxxxxxxx

Last night's bonfire had been a fiasco. Besides Harry punching the lights out of our cousin, we also had to deal with Levi and Jay's argument which led to insults, a broken nose, and a broken jaw. Then things just turned chaotic because Alex and Adam, the young wolves from the Makah Reservation announced that they were feeling attracked to Sarah. They said there was something different about her. The next thing we knew dad had ordered Sarah to be taken home escorted by four wolves and he also ordered that she should never be left alone.

As the bonfire came to an end other things happened. Aunt Rebecca announced she was pregnant and Uncle Embry left to the woods. Mom followed him to make sure he was okay and probably to try and figure out what the hell was happening because in a normal situation we all believed Uncle Embry would be happy to hear his wife's news even though this was a dangerous age for Aunt Rebecca to have another baby.

Then dad sent everyone home but he called the packs to rearrange the patrol schedules for the next three days. I took the first shift with Sam, Quill and Jay. During patrol Jay's thoughts were all over the place. He was worried about my sister, I could feel he still clinged to some of their memories, he was also anxious about what Alex and Adam had said earlier, however I could feel that every time he thought of Sarah, the imprint bond with Ella was there reminding him that Ella had longer hair, softer eyes, she was less impulsive, she suited him better than any other woman.

In a way I felt sorry for Jay and for my sister. It was clear to me that the imprint bond between him and my cousin would be an obstacle almost impossible to overcome for the both of them. The only reason why Jay and Ella weren't already dating was because she was still reluctant in accepting te bond but when that happened, Sarah would lose Jay forever.

As I arrived home after patrol, all thoughts of having a quiet night dissipated when I heard the loud voices of Harry and Season. She wanted to leave immediately because now that she knew that an alpha male would eventually need a female wolf to mate with and produce offspring, she didn't see a future with Harry. All she saw was hurt and disappointment.

My brother tried to convince her otherwise. He told her that right now there weren't any female wolves available and even if they existed they would be our relatives which would make any romantic relationship impossible.

Season didn't care. She was not going to stay in a relationship that had a time limit. That's when Harry said he would stop phasing just to prove her he truly wanted to be with her. Season almost changed her mind but in the end she realised he wouldn't be able to let go of his wolf that easily and she packed her bags.

There was nothing Harry could do. Except telling her that she was going to have his baby. William and I suggested that he should tell her but Harry declined vehemently. We thought he was being an idiot but the truth was that I had no idea how I would react if I were him.

Harry had every right to feel insecure and scared. Season was abandoning him because she believed that one day Harry would leave her to mate with a wolf girl, so no one could actually guess what she'd do if she found out she was pregnant. She could get an abortion or give up the baby for adoption. She cleary wasn't ready to know she was having a baby. But not telling her was also a risky decision.

"If it makes you feel better, I'm about to be punished for something I shouldn't be punished for." William said with a worried expression painting his features. The Council was about to deliver the veridict. Since the Whites would have the last call, William was convinced he was about to receive the worst punishment possible: banishment. I believed that mom and dad would be able to prevent that.

"If it makes you feel better I'm going to be grounded for the rest of my life." Sarah intention was noble but Harry was still unresponsive. "Besides I still hold the record of the shortest marriage ever." She was right. Her marriage with Jay had lasted less than 48 hours. But the reason why Sarah was about to be locked at home for the bext century didn't have anything to do with her annuled marriage. It had to do with her attacking both Jay and Levi last night.

"If it makes you feel better..." I hesitated. I wasn't used to share things like this. Even with the mind link I had been able to hide a few things. "I had the worst first date ever. Actually my relationship with Sophia didn't even last 24 hours."

"You're dating?" Sarah asked surprised.

"We were going to start dating." I confessed awkwardly.

"What happened?"

"Her gift was activated and now she's having doubts." It was more complicated than that but I wasn't going to tell my sister all the details of my failed relationship.

"I'm really sorry about that, Boo." Sarah said with a sad look. "I kind of liked her..."

"The wolf gene sure fucked us up..." William commented. "Do you still think being a wolf is everything you ever wanted?" He turned to Sarah.

"It's not what I always wanted but it's better than being kept in the dark." She said truthfully. "By the way... you should go and tell her she's pregnant before the taxi arrives, Harrison. I know you're worried but she deserves to know."

Harry glanced at Sarah and then he finally got up.
