AN: EVERYONE: I'M BACK! I've missed this. If you red my profile a couple days ago, I said my grandma died and I needed to postpone my writing. I just really needed to clear my head and get back into the writing game. Thanks for your patience. Last week another relative died and I just couldn't write anymore. But the past is past because I'm Back! I'm hoping to get an new Broken Legacy done by the end of the week.
Creator of Magic: I am going to read your chapters. I swear I will! Just give me some time. I'm sorry I haven't been very good lately. I see you're posting more. Which is good! I'm glad you're finding the time to write.
Thanks for doing my suggestion. I do think it really adds something to the writing. And yes, Rose was controlling the knights, but she saved them! Hope you are excited to see more of Rose in this chapter. I tried to get her usual character into a nicer form, but still with the sharp tongue. Let me know what you think of the new and improved Rose.
Evie and Carlos are still a little on the rocks, but don't worry. The clarity is coming.
Mal stood still. She was shocked. Ben had trusted her. She had trusted her. Mal could feel the anger beginning to warm her body up. She marched up onto the platform and reached for Rose's cuffs. "Aye! I just saved you guys! You don't need to fix them."
"What?" Mal raised her eyebrows confused. "No the spell did."
"Only because I told you to hit it together," Rose raised her eyebrows. She looked over to Uma. "Hey deserter." Uma folded her arms and looked angry.
"What point is it that we hit the swords together?" Mal was confused.
"The shell," Uma said simply, "My mother's a sea witch remember?" Mal looked back to Rose, who nodded.
"How did you get out?" Mal demanded.
"Ben requested me," Rose admitted, "I thought he'd be with you."
"I don't know where he is." Mal shook her head. "How did you survive the sleeping smoke?"
"Uh," Rose lifted her cuffs, "These things are all magic proof. I'm assuming spells like that don't work unless they're completely off. When you and sea witch over there sent that shock I put my cuffs up to deflect it. It bounced off but it made a crack." Rose placed her arms in a 'x'. Thin cracks traveled down the metal. Mal ran a finger over them. She thought of doing a repairing spell, but Rose dropped her hands back down to her sides.
"Why do you have the sword of enchantment?" Carlos asked. Mal didn't even notice it to be the sword of enchantment, but there it was slung across her body.
"When I heard the roar, I knew there was trouble," Rose clung to the strap of the hilt. "This was closet thing I could find. I've been looking for Ben all over the castle, then I heard chats and singing, so I knew it had to be you're squad." Her lips shaped into a grin when she saw Evie shaking. "Princess blueberry, what's the matter?"
"N-nothing," Evie said unconvincingly. Carlos stepped in front of her.
Rose laughed. "Oh, please. I'm not going to hurt you unless you give me a reason."
"What about you inserting yourself into my thoughts," Evie came from behind Carlos. "Or when you would put me under small spells?"
"What?" Rose raised her eyebrows, "You still haven't forgiven me? That was ages ago. You wouldn't have your lover boy if it wasn't for me. Besides, you were only a pawn that I used for my game."
"A game which you horribly lost," Jay folded his arms.
"We're missing apart of the team aren't we," Rose looked around, "Your little girlfriend up and left you Jay?" Jay was about to charge at her, but Mal stepped in.
"She's not worth it Jay," Mal raised and eyebrow.
"Uh," Rose stepped in front of her. "Speak for yourself. I haven't been in combat since forever ago." She raised her arm, but Mal caught it and bent it back, causing Rose to look straight into your eye.
"Listen," Mal's anger was bubbling, "I'm going to let you redeem yourself. If you help us and don't betray, you might be able to be set free. Ben believes you're still good, I am not quite convinced. You prove to me that you're worth it or you'll spend the rest of your life in that cell. Rotting away. Understand?" Her eyes glowed green. Rose didn't say a word. "Understand?!'
Rose pouted out her lip and looked as if she was going to cry. She then curved her lips into a grin again and started chuckling. Rose mocked her voice, "Understand?!" She began to laugh again. "And the glowing eyes? Mal, that's child's play. Did you learn that from your dad? Oh, wait." She kept laughing. Mal let go of her arm. How did she know?
"Let's regroup and just get out of here," Mal said coldly. "We'll deliver Rose back to her cell and get back to our mission."
"What? I just got out?" Rose folded her arms. Mal didn't respond. "Mal." The purple haired girl turned around to see Rose's expression was now serious. "I'll help you. For Ben. No tricks...well, maybe some tricks."
"No."
"Okay fine. No tricks," Rose said as she stepped down from the pedestal. "But you can't doubt me. If we're a team, I want the same treatment. Don't act as if I'm a criminal." She held out her hand to Mal. Mal looked down at it. She felt that this was some sort of trick. She then remembered Ben. The hug between the siblings at graduation. She had to at least give her a chance.
"You do anything to hurt Ben or anybody else," Mal held up a finger. "You will never get another chance." Rose raised her eyebrows before Mal grabbed her hand. it was a firm handshake. Mal could feel the magic spark between their hands. It was definitely an alliance Mal didn't expect to make today.
"Alright then," Rose held up a ring with a red stone,"Who's is this?"
"Mine," Evie walked up to Rose. She looked at Mal with concern. The last time they were face to face she had kidnapped her. Mal nodded in approval of trust. Evie held out her hand and Rose placed it gently in her palm. "It came off with a sword swipe. Better tuck it in here." She placed the ring in her pocket.
Carlos' heart practically broke. He tried his best to hide his pained did this mean? Was she still mad at him? Was he overreacting? Probably. Carlos tried to make eye contact with Evie, but she kept her head down. He felt so confused and so lost.
"Better get a move on," Uma crossed her arms. Mal nodded and they were beginning to walk out of the armor room, but Evie stopped them.
"Guys," Evie raised her eyebrows,"Are we really not going to talk about this? We were working so great together. Why aren't we all celebrating as a team?"
"Uh, yeah," Uma pooped a hip. "We should be celebrating me and my crew." Harry and Gil cheered as she plastered a smug smile on her face. Mal was about t retort, but everything was cut off by Rose's laughter.
"You guys are the best when it comes to entertainment," Rose stepped down from the pedestal and threw her braid behind her shoulder. "You think after teaming up before to stop me, you would get along a little better. But what do I know, I've only been tormenting your lives for a year." She began to walk out too, but Evie stopped her too.
"This includes you," Evie raised an eyebrow.
"What?" Rose looked offended. "I don't need this."
"Why don't we start with an ice breaker?" Evie didn't listen to Rose. Mal, Carlos, and Jay all groaned, but Carlos stopped when Evie shot him a look. "I'll start. Rose, I think your hair is a beautiful color. I bet it would look amazing if you wore it down." Rose started laughing again.
"Little blue," Rose crossed her arms,"I don't know if you remember but I wouldn't be telling me what to do with my hair."
"Evie," Mal interrupted. She grabbed her friends hands. "I love you. And I love what you're trying to do here, but we are low on time, and Audrey knows we are here."
"Where does this princess bunk down anyway?" Uma chimed in. "Even if she's not there maybe we can find a clue."
"She's still in the dorms," Evie said. "I saw her diploma was empty. She's in summer school." This time, Harry was the one laughing. Rose seemed to want to shrink down into a mouse.
"Summer school?" Harry continued to laugh. "No wonder she wants revenge!" He put his hand on Uma's shoulder. She grinned a little at this.
"I need you guys to go find Ben," Mal looked at Rose. "You need to go too. Meet back at Evie's in 2 hours."
"It sounds like you're using my plan," Uma grinned.
"It was the obvious plan," Mal defended.
"Uma said it first!" Gil called out.
"Alright, enough" Rose threw out her hands and clapped them together. "Come on boys. Its playtime." Mal was about to say something, but Rose lead the boys out of the room. Mal was glad that Rose wasn't trying to escape, but there was still a little distrust in her heart.
Carlos glanced back at Evie before following her. Mal wondered about the ring. It wasn't on Evie's finger before, was it?
The girls had searched everywhere. Mal and Evie had looked all over campus. As they were walking back, Mal couldn't help but ask, "So the ring?" Evie's face turned pale so fast Mal couldn't even blink. She didn't answer for a while. This made Mal more concerned.
"Actually," Evie gained a little color now, "I'm not sure."
"What do you mean you're not sure?" Mal asked.
"Carlos won the ring at the arcade," Evie didn't make eye contact with Mal. "We were just talking and before I knew it he put it on my finger. That's it."
"Wait," Mal stopped her, "He didn't even say anything?"
"Well he was going to then we got interrupted," Evie began to walk again. "I don't know if its just a gift or-"
"An engagement ring?" Mal raised her eyebrows. "That's a weird place to propose."
"I know!" Evie shook her head. "Carlos doesn't just do things. He is usual a planner, and with something like this it would definitely be in a more romantic place. If he knew me at all he would know I wouldn't want to get engaged at an arcade on the Isle."
"Would you even say yes?" Mal asked before thinking.
"N-Y- I don't know," Evie admitted, "I've been having doubts lately."
"Doubts?"
"Just if he's the one," Evie shrugged, "It isn't always a fairytale. Love is a very complicated thing. I wish it were simpler. Did you have any doubts about Ben."
"When we were first going out," Mal admitted, "I was really wondering if this could amount to something special. But here we are a year and a few months later and I'm engaged to him. And I don't think love is complicated, its just a powerful thing that's different for everyone. You and Carlos are probably the best couple I know. I'm sure you'll be able to put an end to your doubts after all this."
"Thanks M," Evie smiled. They had reached Audrey's dorm room door and opened it. Uma was sitting on her pink bed reading her diary, while Celia was over by the vanity.
"Any luck?" Celia asked.
"She's not anywhere on campus," Evie shook her head.
"I found her diary," Uma laughed and looked at Mal. "Man, did you mess up her life."
"Okay," Mal folded her arms, "Did you find anything in there that we don't already know or not?" Uma looked back down to the book.
"She's hiding out at fairy cottage. You know, where they hid her mom from your mom."
"Yes ha ha," Mal said unenthused, "the irony hasn't escaped me." Uma shrugged and sat up.
"How could anyone with this bed be unhappy," Uma said as she plopped back down. She had thrown the book down by her feet. Mal couldn't help but take a look. After reading a few pages she couldn't help but feel a little guilty. Audrey was really hurting. More than she knew.
At the vanity, Celia was trying on the jewelry. She had a crown and pearl necklaces on. "Okay," she turned to Evie and struck a pose, "How do I look?" Evie turned to her and grinned.
"Great!" After she said this her expression changed to serious, "But the bling stays here."
"But she's bad," Celia whined.
"And we're not," Evie shot back. Celia put it all back. As she did this she accidentally knocked over the bracelet box.
"Whoops," Celia stooped down to collect all of the bracelets. Evie propped the box back up, only to see a small stack of papers underneath it. She pulled them out. They're were pink ink blotches on them as well as two handwritings.
"Mal," Evie called. Mal came over and took the papers from Evie. She looked them over. It was magic paper. She learned about them in magic history back in the Isle. They were very hard to make. The handwriting in a dark ink was unrecognizable. Her nimble finger ran itself over the pink stains. There was only one person Mal could think of who would write this. Face the REALITY.
"Ben!" the boys all called. Rose didn't say anything, she only listened to the rustle of the leaves in the wind. It felt so good to be outside again. Her wisps flew around on her face. She thought about how Evie said her hair would look nice down. She hadn't worn it down for nearly four years. It was a suggestion that should be considered.
"Dude," Carlos called the dog over. "Did you find anything?"
"No," Dude shook his head.
"These grow everywhere!" Gil was picking berries from a bush. He popped a few in his mouth. "Hey! Jay! We should play that ice breaker. I like the way you can bounce around and jump off things. Rose! I like how you're a good girl with an edge." Jay was very surprised by this sudden interaction, but very pleased with the complement. He looked over a Rose too see she had a slight blush on her cheeks. "These are free right?" Gil held up a berry.
Jay crossed over to him. "Yeah ah-" Jay shrugged, "I like how you get a kick out of a berry bush." He ran his fingers threw his hair. He just noticed Gil had hair just like him.
"I guess you've seen everything," Gil ate another, "Like furry rocks, big fish, and grabbing lunch off a bush."
"No," jay shook his head as he grabbed his own berry. "I usually use the vending machines at practice. Tourney used to take up most of time actually."
"That's a wee boy's game!" Harry laughed behind them.
"I couldn't agree more," Rose chimed in. Jay shot her a look. "I'm kidding. Take a joke."
"Hey you know what is fun," Gil was chipper. "To go rafting in a jungle river."
"Maybe find a lost civilization," Jay added.
"Maybe a penguin!" Gil said excitedly.
"Oh well," Jay shrugged, "While you would find those more on an iceberg, but yeah that would be fun."
"You guys are killing me," Harry shook his head.
Rose looked over at Carlos, who was petting Dude. He looked very distraught. With a little hesitance, Rose walked over and sat down on the rock with him. He looked at her alarmed. Dude had ran away to smell something. She tried to keep a calm face. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing," Carlos straightened.
"Oh so that's how its going to be," Rose nodded. "Believe me I know silent suffering when I see one. Lemme guess. Something with big blue?"
"She's not big," Carlos turned away from her. Rose took a breath to diminish her annoyance.
"I know we are not off to a great restart," Rose admitted. "But I'm just trying to act normal for once."
"Why with me?" Carlos asked.
"Because I think you and I are on the same level," Rose put together.
"Of what?" Carlos was confused. They weren't eh same age. What else could they have in common.
"With our struggles of the parents department," Rose shrugged. Carlos turned towards her.
"You don't know anything about me," Carlos tried to put on an angered face.
"I know that both of our mother's didn't love us," Rose shot back before thinking. Carlos' face turned into a hurt expression. She instantly regretted saying anything. "Listen, I know I've caused you a lot of pain in the past year, but when you think about it, I actually did you a lot of good." Carlos raised an eyebrow. "You and Evie wouldn't even be together if it weren't for me. You would've been denying yourselves for the rest of your lives. I think I deserve to know what's wrong."
Carlos took a deep breath. He just wanted this out. "I think I mess up. I put a ring on her finger without saying anything and I think she thought I was proposing and I haven't clarified it."
"Well, what did you mean?" Rose raised an eyebrow.
"I just wanted it to be a promise ring," Carlos admitted. "I didn't want to propose to her on the Isle in an arcade. I would make it much more meaningful and romantic if I was going to propose. Evie should know that."
"Maybe she doesn't," Rose said simply. "She may have though you were proposing. Love is a weird thing, or so I've been told. Its different for everyone. But what is it without its tragedy?" Carlos thought about this statement. She was right. He needed to make things clear.
"You know," Carlos said after a moment ,"You're actually not that bad at being a friend."
"Friend?" Rose looked shocked.
"Friend," Carlos grinned. Rose couldn't help but let her own lips curve a little. She felt a weird warm feeling inside of her chest. Was this what friendship felt like?
"Carlos!" Dude called as he ran back. "Come this way!" Rose felt alarmed as they all bolted to where the dog was leading them. They ran through the forest. Rose's eyes darted around in search of her brother. They all suddenly stopped. They looked around in every direction. Rose could hear the faint deep breathing of another creature.
Her animal senses kicked in. The rustle of the grass sprung her into action. She threw her arm towards Carlos and pushed him down with magic. Jay was about to run at her, but she pushed him down too. A roar echoed as a beast wearing a blue jacket and pants jumped from the trees. She had just saved both Carlos and Jay's lives. The cuffs burned as she lifted the spell keeping them down.
Gil helped up Jay and Carlos, but Harry was nowhere to be found.
The girls were all making their way to Evie's place. When Evie saw it her lips curved into a smile. Mal stared blankly into the horizon. "I really hope they find Ben," she said. Evie understood the pain of being separated from someone they loved. When she was kidnapped, all she could think about was Carlos. She wondered how they were doing with the search for Ben. Hopefully they were alright.
"Nice digs," Uma nodded in approval.
"I got a really good deal," Evie nodded. Sometimes she forgot that it was her house. Soon, Mal would be leaving, along with Jay if he goes to college, and Maybe even Carlos if he wants to go too. Evie didn't like the thought of being alone. But being close to the castle made her fell a little bit better.
Inside, the twins and Dizzy were sleeping on the couch. They were hit by the sleeping spell. Celia watched as Dizzy stirred in reaction to a nightmare. Celia placed a blanket over them and whispered, "Its okay." The other three watched in amazement. "Dizzy told me about the wars," Celia looked at Evie, "She's more scarred than you think."
Evie felt a pang of guilt. She caused an innocent girl so much trauma. With the fire, the wolf attack, and the battle. Dizzy would never not be scarred from it. "Happy dreams Dizzy," Celia looked over at her, "Once we fix this they're going to let all the kids come off the Isle." This Made Mal feel bad. She made that promise even though she knew it could never happen.
There was a sudden snore from the glass room. The girls all rushed over to see Harry sleeping on the table with cake smeared across his face. The girls all exchanged looks of disgust. "He must've got lost?" Evie suggested.
"He's a coward," Mal shook her head. Uma snarled at her and wiped her hair back. The two friends stayed by the door as Uma went over to her sleeping first mate.
"Harry!" Uma nudged him. "Harry! Wake up!"
"He must be spelled," Mal concluded.
"But then why aren't we?" Uma raised her eyebrow.
"Maybe Audrey's playing some sort of game." Evie shrugged.
"Well a captain needs her first mate," Uma looked down at him, "Mal, can't you undo this?"
"You have the ember," Mal reminded. "And do we really want him to be up anyways."
"Well what about true love's kiss," Uma suggested. She then looked at Mal expectantly.
"No way!" Mal held up her left hand, "I'm engaged."
"You two used to go out," Uma shrugged.
"Ages ago," Mal shook her head. "My true love is Ben."
"Blue?"
"I'm taken as well," Evie pouted her lips, "I guess that leaves you."
"No," Uma shook her head.
"It was your idea!" the two girls said at the same time.
"You know a lot better than either of us do," Mal added. Uma looked down at Harry. He looked so peaceful in his sleep.
"Its not going to work," Uma said after a moment.
"You can at least try and prove it." Mal stepped down and kissed Harry's cheek. Evie did the same. Nothing happened both times. "See, now its your turn."
"Can you two not watch," Uma said with disgust.
"What have you never kissed anyone before?" Evie said as a joke, Uma began to blush.
"You never kissed anyone before?" Mal raised her eyebrows in surprise.
"Yes I have," Uma interrupted the girl's giggles. This was lie, but she didn't like to be weak. "Just go."
"Okay," Evie bit her lip to stop smiling. The two girls left the room.
Uma looked down at her first mate. He looked quite handsome and at peace. He was always very flirtatious with her, but he was with everyone. Although, he did often put his arm around her. But that wasn't love, was it? They've known each other for all of their lives. He never put her down for who she was. Harry always seemed proud to work with her. They were definitely best friends, but anything more was just wasn't a though in her mind. She just didn't know.
"Here I go," Uma whispered before leaning down. When her face was inches away from his, her eyes fluttered shut. She touched her lips to his softly. After a moment, she felt his lips kissing back. Alarmed, Uma wiped back her head to see Harry was awake. Before she could think she punched him right in the face. He was out instantly. "Fish sticks!" Uma jumped back from the unconscious Harry.
She clapped her hands over her mouth and tried to ignore the tingling sensation in her chest. Her cheeks were heating up steadily. "Uma!" Mal and Eive rushed in. "What's wrong."
"I woke him up, and put him back to sleep."
AN 2: Betcha' weren't expecting THAT! Hopefully you enjoyed the twist and don't hate my writing after this. (lol I don't really care that much if you hate it) I don't know exactly where I'm going with this scene but I think it should've happened. Please Review What you Think!
