Book IV – The Matriarch

Sarah Black

88. Playing With Fire

I don't know who started the kiss, but I immediately knew I was playing with fire. Because that's what Levi was: fire. His touch burned my skin. It was just his fingertips touching me underneath my blouse but I felt I was being engulfed by a blazing fire that would soon be out of control.

I knew at that point that this wasn't just Levi. I could tell his wolf was there, right under his russet skin but mine was trying to get unleashed as well. She was excited and anxious at the same time. And I was losing all sense of time. All I knew was that I needed more of him, I wanted him closer. I pressed my body against him and felt his immediate response.

Lifting me effortlessly, Levi pressed me against the wall and I took off his shirt since I could now use both my hands. He was tall, not as tall the twins, but he was definitely taller than Jay and he was strong too because he was supporting all of my weight.

My wolf was pleased with him. He was the perfect mate. He wasn't an alpha but he was the best candidate we had come across. She disliked everyone else. I didn't know why though. Levi was temperamental, smug, and sometimes even antisocial. But my wolf sensed loyalty, devotion, and truthfulness. And that was enough.

Right now, Levi was fumbling with my bra. My blouse had disappeared somewhere and I could feel his desperation in every thrust. I knew my jeans were going to get torn if the friction between our lower bodies didn't stop.

"Your scent is intoxicating." I heard him whispered.

"You smell nice too." I practically moaned into his lips.

"Shit… I don't think I can stop."

"I don't want you to stop."

I had no experience in that department but my wolf seemed to know what to do. If I allowed her to control me, there would be no turning back.

It's fine. Release me. Everything will be okay. You took the birth control shot. Just let it go, Sarah. Let me go and everything will be back to normal after a few weeks.

The idea of staying with Levi for a few weeks was tempting. We could take off into the woods and stay there during the whole mating season. I knew his wolf was contemplating the same.

Levi's lips went down my neck and into my cleavage and I was letting my resolve slip. His eyes were turning silver and our temperature was rising fast.

"I want you to take me right here." Those words left my mouth unintentionally. I would never say something like that if not controlled by my wolf spirit.

Levi lifted his head to meet my eyes. He was breathing heavily, his eyes shining with lust.

"Fuck!" He said and then he let me go and I almost fell on the floor. "You shouldn't have come. You shouldn't be here!"

"But we both want this."

"Our wolves want this, not us. I can't believe I'm falling for this shit again."

"You don't want me?"

That was the wolf talking, I knew that but I was still not in control of myself, so I took a step towards Levi. He stretched his arm to prevent me from getting closer.

"Leave. Now!" He said. "I don't know if I can stop myself if you stay here. Your scent is all over the place."

"What if I don't go?" I challenged. "What are you going to do to me?"

"Don't you get it?" He yelled. His eyes were now brighter with a silver glint. "If you don't leave, I'm going to fuck you right here, right now!" His aggressive tone didn't intimidate me.

"Then do it!"

I was playing with fire. A wildfire.

"Fuck my life!" Levi turned around and took something out of a drawer. It took me a while to register what it was.

"Shoot me and get out of here. My self-control is slipping." He warned me. I didn't know if he was serious or not but he pushed the small caliber gun into my hands. He was shaking.

"I'm not going to shoot you."

"If you don't… things will get pretty rough." He took a step closer. "I'm not going to be the guy that took advantage of Jacob Black's perfect daughter! I'm trying to do what's right!"

It was impressive that Levi was trying to fight the wolf inside of him, and I knew I should do the same, but the more he fought, the more my wolf wanted to spice things up and challenge him.

"Put the gun down and let's go outside. If you give me a head start I'll reward you." I teased him.

"Sarah… I'm serious."

I annulled the space between us and kissed him hard. He tried his best to fight it but I could feel his resolve crumbling and a huge fire was consuming us again. Then, all of a sudden, the gun went off.

I screamed. Levi fell on the floor, bleeding. And I panicked.

"Fuck! It hurts like a bitch!" He cursed.

Kneeling beside him, I grabbed a piece of clothing that was nearby and pressed the wound.

"Oh my God, you shot yourself!"

"You better leave, Black. I'm going to pass out and I don't think my mum and my sister will like seeing you next to my body when they arrive."

I bet they wouldn't. They would probably think I had shot him.

"You're insane! Bat shit crazy! You shot yourself and you're bleeding!"

"I didn't hit anything vital… and… you're stating… the obvious." His voice was faltering now. He was losing consciousness because, despite my efforts, he was still bleeding.

"I'm going to call 911."

"It's probably healing already… you fucking idiot. Leave…"

"Sarah?" I heard William's voice outside.

Thank the Spirits. My brother would know what to do.

"Will! Help me!"

"You promised to wait for me… Why do I smell blood?" He said as he walked in and then he stopped and blinked a few times trying to access what was happening.

Things didn't look so well. I was half-naked at the entrance hall of the Uley's house, kneeling beside Levi who was unconscious and bleeding. The gun was still on the floor next to me.

"What in the fuck…" William started and then he halted.

"He passed out."

"I'm can see that, Sarah. Why are you wearing just a bra? Where's your blouse?"

"Can you help him?"

"Did he try to…"

"No! No, that's not what happened, Will… please just help him!"

"Do I look like a doctor?" He kneeled too and checked Levi's pulse. "He's fine. He'll heal. We have amazing healing abilities. In an hour he'll be as good as new."

"Are you sure?" I was walking around frantically trying to find my blouse when I finally noticed that it was covered with Levi's blood because I had used it to stop his bleeding.

"We need to go now!"

"And leave him like this?" I asked shocked. "Emily and Ella are probably coming back as we speak… they'll be scared to death!"

"Neither of us should be in La Push right now and the Council's meeting is over. We need to go and I don't give a fuck about Emily or Ella."

William grabbed my arm and dragged me out of the house.

"We have to phase." He said. "Otherwise we won't arrive on time."

"We can't just leave him!" I got free and was about to turn back when Will stopped me.

"Shut up, Sarah!" He yelled. "I knew this was a bad idea. I shouldn't have left you alone with that idiot! And I shouldn't have trusted you."

"You shut up, Will! He's bleeding!"

"He won't die. It's not a fatal wound. He's healing already. What you did back there was incredibly stupid!"

"What I did?"

"You let your freaking horny-wolf hormones take over and everything went to shit!"

I blushed. My brother was right. I was letting my wolf take over and do things I would never do. Like throwing myself into Levi's arms and kiss him.

"Let's go! We're going to phase and you're going to follow me. If I run faster, you'll run faster. If I stop, you'll stop! Do you understand?"

"What about him?" I pointed to Levi's house.

"I've just told you, haven't I?" I glared at William and he recoiled for a second. "Fine!" He took his phone from his pocket and sent a message.

"What did you do?"

"I asked Harry to come over with Uncle Seth. Happy now?"

I nodded.

"Thank you."

"Just phase, Sarah."

It was the weirdest thing ever. I hadn't phased many times. Not on my own accord. I had phased suddenly and violently in Italy. I barely felt anything besides an immense tension on my body and then a liberating explosion. Then there was the day I argued with Jay. That day I phased because I was angry, jealous, and desperate. I wanted to free Jay from his imprint and rub in my parents' faces that this wolf thing was not as important and impeditive as they advertised.

So basically I had never phased intentionally. I even thought it would hurt but it didn't. I liked it but I wasn't ready to listen to the immense noise of having another person in my head.

'I can hear you.' I was a bit overwhelmed.

'I can hear you too.'

'Why?'

'I have no idea but the same happened when Isaac phased.'

'The only other person I heard was… Levi.'

'You'll get used to it, don't worry. Now… what the fuck happened in there?'

'We lost control.'

'You told me you were going to wait for me and that you were not going to meet him alone!'

'I got tired of waiting.'

'I can't believe you were going to let Levi Uley have his way with you in his house.'

'It wasn't me! It was my wolf!'

Was it? Came a voice inside my head and it wasn't my brother's.

'If something happened to you, dad would kill me. Why are you always putting everyone at stake?'

'Because I'm like you?'

'Fuck you, Sarah. We're nothing alike. I would never…'

'What? Get caught red-handed doing improper things? You're the one to talk, Will. Verena White walked in on you and her daughter having sex! And now you can't even be in La Push.'

'We were inside Rhea's room, and she's my fiancée! But… you're being reckless. You shouldn't have come here, so stop patronizing me and don't talk about things you don't know.'

'I know a lot more than you think. Rhea told me. She told me everything. She told how you used to make fun of her when you were teenagers, she told me how you bullied her at school, she told me she's terrified about everything that's been happening.'

'Terrified? Of what?'

It's true what women say about men. They are clueless sometimes.

'What happened to her doesn't usually happen to girls her age, you know that right?'

'What are you talking about?'

'Well, just a few months ago, she had a normal life. She had a fiancé, the date of her wedding was set, she had a ring, a dress, and her in-laws had offered her an apartment in Seattle. And then, you show up, she's kidnapped, she turns into a wolf, she finds out you're a wolf too, and then on top of everything, she discovers she's pregnant. Wake up, William… you have a lot of work to do if you want things to work out.'

I could he was surprised about what I had just said, but he also knew I was trying to change the subject.

'Tells the girl who made a deal with a dead woman to turn into a wolf so she could be with a guy who belongs to someone else.'

'You're an asshole.'

'If we're so much alike I guess that makes you one too, little sister… Now stop beating around the bush and just tell me what happened between you and Levi. Did he hurt you?'

'No.'

'Did you shoot him?'

'He shot himself.'

'Why?'

'Because he managed to control his wolf better than me and he figured that getting shot would eventually stop us from going further.'

And he was right of course. My wolf was tremendously disappointed, and even now, as we ran deep in the forest on our way back to Crimson Creek, she was still trying to convince me to go back. But now that Levi wasn't there and I couldn't smell him, it was easier to ignore her.

'I'm in big trouble, aren't I?'

'You and Levi. It wasn't just you…'

'I went to his house. I mean I thought that I was doing a good thing. A nice thing… he doesn't deserve to be punished.'

'Stop fooling yourself, Sarah. You didn't go to Levi's house to tell him that everything that's happening to him is your fault. You went there because your wolf is in heat. She wants to mate and, for a reason, I will never understand, she likes Levi Uley.'

I couldn't refute that.

'When we get to Alice's house, you're going to have a shower.'

'What? Why?'

'You stink of him.'

'Oh… okay.'

We were lucky. When we arrived at the Cullens, there was no one there so I went to take a shower while William got rid of my clothes.

"Did we arrive before Carlisle and the others?" I asked when I met my brother on the back of the house.

"I don't know," He said. "But we're off the hook for now. Harry found Levi before Emily and Ella, and he decided not to call Uncle Seth because Levi was fine. The bullet wasn't inside of him, so it was easier for his body to heal."

"Is he going to be alright?"

"Of course. He's a wolf, a strong one."

"Aren't all the wolves strong?"

"Sort of. Alpha males are usually stronger than any other wolf in the pack. But there are wolves whose greatest talent isn't their strength but something else. Like speed, you know? Shit like that."

"Right."

"So, what did Rhea want?"

"Oh… right… she thinks she finally discovered the first White to carry the wolf gene. She's still afraid we can be relatives and the baby can have malformations. She's freaking out."

"Carlisle said her gene comes from the Ateara family, so what her problem?"

"The problem is that there's no record what so ever of a marriage between a White and an Ateara."

"Well, tell her it's called extra-marital relationships. It's when people cheat their spouses."

"She thinks that Juliana Kenwood slept with Old Quil and that Hal isn't Christopher White's son."

"But that means that Hal is an Ateara, not a White. And in that case, the White family died with Hal's crazy sister, Muriel."

"Exactly… however, Rhea's wrong. I just didn't dare to tell her."

"What do you mean?"

"We've been investigating too. Mum and Grandma Sue, I mean. We discovered that one of Rhea's ancestors was Irene Ateara and apparently, Old Quil and Juliana Kenwood never had an affair but there are non-confirmed suspicions that one of Ephraim Black's twin sisters had a baby with Gregory White. We can't prove it yet because all the records before 1965 were destroyed in the fire ten years ago, but sooner or later we'll have answers."

"If that's true then the Whites are related to the Blacks."

"Yes. We're distant relatives, just like the Clearwaters and the Blacks. But that's not unusual in a small community like ours, right? In the end, we are all related."

"Are you going to tell her?"

"One day… but not now."

xxxxxxxxxx

I was surprised when Carlisle told me that my parents had agreed to let me go to the Makah Reservation to live with Dana Hansen. I knew they didn't trust Odessa Clearview and that they would rather know that I was safe with the Cullens.

"After a long and tiring conversation, they finally agreed." Those had been Carlisle's words a few hours ago. He forgot to mention that they had conditions. A lot of conditions, some of which I would probably forget in a day or two.

"Call home every two days. Inform Carlisle Cullen of any considerable change in your behavior. Keep studying for the finals. Do not leave the Makah Reservation without permission of the Quileute Tribal Council. Inform the packs if a wolf tries to reach or contact you. Make sure you eat healthy food and have exercise. Try to learn about Odessa's real plans. To avoid boredom, find a part-time job somewhere within the Reservation's perimeter." I read my mother's last text message out loud. She was overreacting. I was only like fifty minutes away from La Push, at the most. Plus I knew I would probably see William and Isaac all the time.

William, because he would get bored with the Cullens. Let's be honest, they were our friends, and sometimes it was fun being around them, but they had strange habits and routines. Plus they were not social creatures like us. Their conception of fun was also very different from ours.

And Isaac, because Sophia Felton was going to stay with Dana and me for a while. Ten days ago Sophia had turned nineteen and on that same day, she received a supernatural gift that had changed her life in an instant. Last week Sophia asked her brother to take her to the place where their mother had been born so she could find out the source of her gift but she only found out she had native blood on her veins.

The only person who had known about Callie's divination gift was her paternal grandmother, Carmine Colburn, and she was long dead. For a few days, Sophia was desperate to get rid of a gift she had never wanted but then Callie realized that when her daughter's gift woke up, her own disappeared just like magic. It was a trade of a sort. Maybe only one member of the Colburn family could have a gift, or maybe it was just time for Callie to retire. No one knew for sure, but then all of a sudden, Sophia decided that she needed help.

She wanted to understand what her gift meant, and how she could live a normal life having to deal with it. So she asked for help for the only person she knew that had some knowledge about her gift: Odessa Clearview.

Unfortunately, her decision didn't allow her to continue her relationship with Isaac. Not until she was ready to learn the truth about wolves and vampires. And if it was hard for her to accept that she had a gift that allowed her to seal a soul to a body, it would be even harder to accept the existence of a shapeshifting gene and the undead walking around.

"We're here," Alice said stopping the car. We took my things out and then she held my hand affectionately.

"We'll never be too far, okay?" She said.

"Okay."

"If you decide to go back, we'll be more than pleased to receive you again."

"I know. Thanks, Alice."

"Pay attention to everything the old lady says and does."

"Don't worry."

"Take care, Sarah."

"I will."

Alice drove away in her Mercedes and in that precise moment, Sophia arrived with her mother. She came to greet me. I could tell she was nervous but she was trying her best to hide it.

"So this is our new house," I told her playfully. She smiled a little. "I hope they allow pets."

Sophia looked at me and raised her eyebrows.

"You brought your pet?" She asked looking around.

"No… I didn't bring anything. But he'll come to me soon." I winked.

Together we walked to the house in front of us and knocked. Our host came to the door. Her black eyes shone when she saw us there, and an indication that Odessa was in charge now.

"Welcome." She greeted us with a smile. That wasn't just a smile. It wasn't just Odessa being nice or feeling happy to see us. No, that was a victorious grin, from ear to ear, a smile that said: "At last, the victory is mine."
