Leah Clearwater

89. Turning Point - part 1

I kept thinking about the White pack. For many reasons. And when I thought about it I felt many things at once. I was angry or at least I was for a while. I knew Lance and the others for years now and I trusted them like they were family, and they had betrayed that trust by chasing my daughter and attacking her to rape her.

I knew I shouldn't be so rough on them because it wasn't their fault. I knew this was not what they wanted because they were decent people and I knew better than anyone that when our wolf is in charge it's hard to fight it. It's almost impossible.

After anger, came disappointment and preoccupation. Lance and his wolf brothers wanted to quit being wolves. We had pleaded with him. This was not the best time to quit. We didn't know what was coming. There were vampire covens ready to start a war and a lot of kids in La Push and Campbell were morphing which suggested we would be involved in some kind of confrontation.

But Lance had been clear. He didn't want to be an alpha anymore. He wanted out. He wanted to resume his life with his wife and his two kids as soon as possible and that caused a major problem. Lance was the alpha of the White pack ever since the pack had been born. He had been the first to phase and he was, without a doubt the best person to lead his pack mates. If he quit, Cody would naturally step up to fill his place because Lance's heirs were still little kids.

The problem was that Cody decided to follow his leader's steps and announced that he too, wanted to leave the pack. He had two kids as well that demanded his full attention. Kinley had already informed that he was quitting so now there were three out of five wolves who wanted to leave the pack. And in a matter of hours, Glenn and Dominic made the same decision.

They informed us and a meeting was scheduled so we could think of a solution because there were three young wolves to consider. They had phased for a reason and they needed guidance. One of the solutions was to bring the three boys back to La Push where one of our packs could take them in. But that would probably cause more harm than good.

Plus that solution didn't please the Heiltsuk council any more than it pleased us. The boys were born in Campbell and they should stay and protect their home. So we had to come up with a different approach. And in the end, I was going to lose another son.

William had been banished from La Push, Sarah had decided to move in with Odessa Clearview's great-granddaughter, and now Harry was leaving too. He was going to take Lance's position temporarily.

"He's not ready, Jacob," I said leaving the bed. It was getting late and Jacob and I had to patrol.

"Yes, he is," Jacob said reaching for his clothes.

"Come on, I know Harrison is not as temperamental as William but I don't think he's ready to go to Canada lead three kids he doesn't even know."

"It will be good for him to be away for a while with Season."

"And that girl… I'm not sure she knows what she's in for. I thought they had broken up."

"It's too late. Harry will never let her go now."

"What do you mean?"

"Oh, it's nothing. It's just that he's in love with her."

I noticed the hesitation in his voice.

"You're hiding something."

Jacob and I had no secrets. We were inside each other's minds all the time and we were mates. We could tell when something was wrong or when the other was upset. That's how I knew for sure he wasn't telling me everything.

"Don't start, Leah."

"Don't start what?"

"I'm going to stop by the shop first, okay? I have to talk to Embry and Collin because we're expecting two clients this afternoon."

"You're running away from me Jacob, I know you better than you know yourself."

"I'm not running away."

"Then tell me."

"Fine, but you have to promise me you won't freak out and you won't tell anything to anyone!"

"I promise."

"We're going to be grandparents."

"Tell me something I don't know." I rolled my eyes. I couldn't believe I was going to have something in common with the Whites. We were going to be family. William was an idiot but there was nothing we could do now.

"I'm not talking about Rhea."

It took me a moment to understand what he was saying.

"Are you fucking kidding me?"

"You promised not to freak out." Jacob shook his head. "I knew I shouldn't have told you."

"I'm not freaking out!"

Jacob looked at me with a stern expression.

"You're freaking out, Leah. You have to pull yourself together."

"Will knocked up Vanessa's niece, Isaac was forced to quit University, Sarah's in heat, and now you're telling me that Harry's going to be a father too?"

"It could be worse… right?"

"Like what?"

"I don't know… I could tell you that JJ is on drugs."

"What?"

"I'm joking. Take it easy."

"We've been a bad influence, haven't we?"

"What are you talking about, woman? How can we be a bad influence on our kids?" Jacob asked amused.

"We became parents before getting married and now the twins are doing the same thing."

"William is going to be married in a couple of months, and Harry… well, he got a little ahead of his brother but, who cares, right?"

"What? Are you joking? Harry got married?"

"He didn't tell anyone. It's supposed to be a secret."

"Why? Why didn't he tell us? We're his parents! I'm his mother, for the Spirits' sake!"

I was upset. Harrison was my firstborn. I wanted to be a part of the most important events in his life, and he had gotten married in secret. Didn't he want to share his happiness with us?

"He must have his reasons."

The fact that Jacob was okay with everything was making me even more upset.

"What do you want me to do, Leah?" He added.

"I didn't say anything…"

"You didn't need to. I know what's on your head. You're mad at me because I'm not mad at Harry, and you want to know why our son kept this from us, so you want me to be mad at him too."

"I'm not… That's not what I… Okay, fine, I'm a tiny bit upset that you're taking this so lightly."

"He's our son and he's not a kid anymore. He'll tell us when he's ready."

"And that's when? He's going to move to Canada in a few days!"

Rosalie and Edward had won the case against Season's mother in a record time of three days. Bruce and Seara Rowen had made it quite easy for the child support services, having drugs and alcohol hidden in their house when they'd gone there to interview them.

"This wasn't even a challenge." Rosalie had commented when the judge announced the sentence. Bruce had been arrested for possession of illicit drugs.

"He needs his space, Leah. Besides this is not a long-term decision. I believe he can help those kids."

I turned around and headed to the stairs.

"Leah?" Jacob called.

"What?" I stopped.

"You need to accept this." He said softly.

"Accept what?" I didn't bother turning around to face him because I didn't want him to see how much I was hurting.

"That they're leaving. For good. They're starting their own lives now."

The patrol was dreadful. It was raining and Jacob was late. He had things to do at the shop but fifteen minutes later he was still absent so I had to start patrol without him.

It was hard to concentrate with so many things going on. I was worried about Sarah. She was exposed. Not many people knew where she was but I felt that she wasn't safe in the Makah Reservation although Jasper had guaranteed me that no wolf or vampire would be able to find her.

Odessa's shadow was hanging over my daughter. For now, Sarah had kept her word and called us every day but I was still apprehensive, afraid that one day she stopped calling and just disappeared. Maybe I was being paranoid but I was scared because one by one my children were being cast away from me.

"I had never seen such creatures." A voice said as a black-hooded man left the shelter of a huge oak tree.

I recognized him soon enough. That was the vampire that the Romanians had sent to make sure we were not helping the Volturi. He had a strong European accent.

"You are different from the others. They are more beast-like."

I guess he was talking about the real werewolves.

"You're less frightening."

I bared my teeth at him and growled. Who the hell was this asshole? Did he think he could come to our lands to mock us and leave unharmed?

The vampire put his arms up when he sensed my anger.

"I'm not here to fight, wolf. I'm here to warn you. Are you ready for what's coming? Will you be able to protect who you love?"

I growled again.

"The war is about to start. The South is swarming with violent vampires who are pledging their service to Vlad and Stefan. In Europe, the Volturi are about to lose one of their leaders, and Aro is going to make a few mistakes that might cost him his position. The Doctor told me you wish to remain neutral in the conflict but remember this, wolf… there's always a third option. When you're ready to accept that, all you have to do is call my name. I'll find you." He grinned and then waved. "See you another time, lady wolf." And he was gone.

I was baffled. Did that happen? Did that vampire suggest that he was not totally in favor of his coven gaining power?

I turned around and ran towards the border. I had to speak to Alice as soon as possible.

xxxxxxxxxx

"She said what?" My mother asked for the second time that afternoon.

"The Romanians sent their message," I repeated Alice's words. "Aro will know what it means in a couple of days when he receives the fingers of his wife in a box."

"Is that enough for a war declaration?" Billy asked.

"In normal circumstances, Aro would send his elite after the Romanians and kill them without mercy but the loss of a mate affects a vampire so much that Aro will be somehow, incapacitated and he'll be dealing with something else," Jacob explained. He had joined me at the border and had listened to every word Alice had said.

"Something else?" Billy questioned.

"Marcus is leaving the coven. Tomorrow will be the turning point." Jacob answered his father. "Tomorrow, everything will change."

Alice had had a vision about the Volturi's future. They were facing difficult times and tomorrow Marcus was going to make his choice. According to Alice, he was going to challenge Aro to come clean about Dydime's death.

"Why will Aro allow Marcus to leave the coven?" Sam asked.

"Marcus will seize the moment right after Aro receives the box containing Sulpicia's fingers. He will run away undetected."

"What about the Elite, Alec, and Jane? Won't they go after him?"

"They don't act unless they're told to and Aro will need several hours, maybe days, to put himself back together. But then it will be too late."

"Too late?" Billy and my mother asked.

"The war will be a reality by then," I informed.

"But for the first time, we are safe from that war. I mean they won't come here to fight, right?"

"It's not that simple, mom." I sighed. She wasn't seeing the whole picture.

Three covens from South America had answered the Romanian's call. Lured by Vlad's promises of power and of a world controlled by vampires, these covens had been preparing for war for weeks. Between the three they counted twelve vampires, one of them had once been Jasper's lover and creator, Maria. And the Cullens knew for a fact that Maria was recruiting more.

There were also rumors of more allies for the Romanians from other parts of the world. Excited by Vlad's secret weapon and the news about the abduction of Sulpicia and Athenodora, many were convinced that this time, the Volturi were finally done.

There was something they didn't know though. Vlad's secret weapon was gone. Carlisle had announced two days ago that Season's gift was gone. She could no longer erase the powers of vampires. The Doctor was certain that the baby's development was behind this but he didn't know enough about our gene or about Season's gift to give us a better explanation.

What it seemed to be good news for the Volturi, turned out to be the origin of the Romanians' war declaration. Vlad and Stefan couldn't wait for the news about Season's new condition to spread because when their allies found out that they would have to fight Aro's powerful elite guards without Season's erasing ability, they would turn around and abandon the war.

"It's now or never for the Romanians," I added. "If they don't start the war now… they will lose their best chance to win."

"How is this going to affect us?" Sam asked. "The girl is safe with Harry, isn't she?"

"Yes."

"And the leech that was here is gone, right?"

"Yes."

"Does Alice know what's going to happen to us?"

Jacob and I looked at each other and then we both looked at Sam who, like Billy and my mother, was watching us closely.

"She does… but you're not going to like it." I replied.

There was no way we would be able to avoid a confrontation with the vampires that were coming from the South. As of tomorrow, Jacob was going to send two wolves as scouts as far south as they could go so we wouldn't be caught off guard.

Because they were violent, the vampires led by Maria were also erratic and Alice was afraid she could miss something. Besides we were going to have another problem.

A problem named Marcus.

"Why is Marcus a problem?" My mother asked surprised. "If he's going to leave his buddies, he'll be one less vampire we'll have to worry about."

"Marcus' agenda includes coming here. He'll want to talk to Edward about Aro."

Edward could read minds, and Marcus wanted to know if he knew anything about Aro's involvement in Dydime's death. He was also interested in hearing both Carlisle and Eleazar, who had been close friends with Aro once upon a time.

"We've just got rid of a leech…" Sam commented referring to the Romanian vampire. "And now another one is coming. Was Alice able to confirm what he meant when he said there was always a third option?"

"No, not yet." And it was true. Alice was frustrated because something was blocking her visions whenever she tried to know more about the Romanians. However, right now she was more concerned with Maria and her friends coming up North than with Janus, who was returning to Europe.

"Apart from the new patrol routes and schedules, is there anything else we need to know about? Will Harry and Season be safe in Campbell?" Billy asked.

"Yes," Jacob answered. "They'll be fine."

"Good."

We waited until my mother and Billy left to speak to Sam. We had to elaborate a plan in case we were attacked by the enemy but we didn't want to cause panic.

"Are we talking about a full evacuation? Because you know that's almost impossible. Between La Push and Forks we're talking about several hundreds of people. Where would we put them?"

"That's why I said we need to find a solution, Sam. We don't know what we're going to do yet." Jacob replied. "But if Maria and her bloodsucking friends come here, we need to be prepared and we won't be able to do that without a good plan."

Harry and Levi were about to leave to Campbell; Sarah was an untrained and unreliable young wolf; Isaac and his pack were also young and didn't have any experience fighting against lethal vampires, so we were twelve wolves and a bunch of untrained pups.

According to Jasper, Maria and her vampire friends didn't have any special abilities but they were all very dangerous and the Cullens had too many things to take care of and with Marcus' arrival, they would be too busy to protect La Push.

"Okay, okay… I might have an idea." Sam suddenly said.

xxxxxxxxxx

"Will Sam's plan work?"

"It might," Jacob answered my question as he opened the door for our house. "With the Police Department's help, I think it will work."

"I'm glad we decided to talk to him. I would never remember suggesting a natural disaster simulation."

"I'm going to talk to Embry."

"About the cars? I thought you already did that."

"Not about the cars, about the other thing."

"Oh… Do you think he'll agree?"

Jacob shrugged.

"He's gotten a bit stubborn over the years… but I'm the alpha, remember?"

"Don't you even think about ordering him!"

"Relax. I'm not going to alpha command him. Have some faith in me."

"Okay. Are you going to be home by six?"

"I think so. What's your plan?"

"Well, I was thinking… since we're home alone, we could have a quiet dinner and watch a movie?"

"It sounds great." Jacob kissed me, and after picking up his car keys he left. "Don't forget to go to my dad's."

"Sure."

"Thanks. Oh… and if you go to the store, don't forget the wine." He said before entering the car.

It wasn't just the patrols that were about to change, Jacob had already thought about the organization of the pack in case we were forced to fight or leave our lands. He had chosen Embry to stay behind with our families and to lead a small group of wolves that would stay Denis, Brady, and Collin in case the rest of us had to leave.

In a normal situation, that job would go to Seth, who was now Jacob's second-in-command, but my brother had already told us that he wanted to fight and that he didn't mind giving that role to Embry. I knew Seth well enough to know that he was trying to protect Embry now that Becca was pregnant. But we didn't know if Embry was going to accept.

I hated to spend my time going shopping but if I had to cook dinner, I had to have ingredients so I went to the nearest grocery store. Fortunately, the store didn't have many costumers inside, so I was able to navigate in the aisles on my own and choose what I wanted without anyone staring at me until I entered the wine section. I was surprised to see Rhea there as much as she was to see me.

"Mrs. Black." She greeted.

"Rhea." I looked at the bottle of wine in her hands. "You shouldn't drink alcohol. It's bad for the baby."

Rhea blushed and then looked at me alarmed.

"It's not for me. It's for my mother. She's having…"

"I was kidding. I mean… alcohol is not good for the baby but one glass of wine doesn't hurt."

"Right…"

I picked up a bottle for myself and wondered if I should keep talking to her or ignore her presence. I didn't like small talk and except for the fact that she was carrying my son's child, we had little to talk about.

"Mrs. Black I was wondering if you could…"

"You can call me Leah." Whether I liked it or not we would be family someday and Jacob was right about something: I shouldn't blame Rhea for what her family did. They were gossipers and ill-intentioned but she didn't seem to be like them. And I guess she did love William, probably not as much as I did, because he was my son, but she was his mate and I had to make an effort to ensure that my son was happy with this girl and their child.

"I've been thinking about the baby and most women take pre-natal vitamins and go to the doctor. Will said that I can't go to a regular doctor so, I was wondering if you could talk to your brother and ask him if he can see me one of these days."

"It's not a good time for my brother but I can talk to Doctor Cullen and I'm sure he can see you tomorrow."

"Doctor Cullen? But he's a vampire." She lowered her voice. "What if I can't control myself around him?"

I sighed. I should have kept my mouth shut but now was too late. Besides I could see that this girl needed someone by her side. It shouldn't be me, of course. But my son was an idiot and he was paying for that, so his pregnant girlfriend was now my problem.

"Don't worry about that. I'm going with you."

"You?"

"Yes, me. Why? You don't want company?"

"Of course I do, it's just that I thought you had to go to work and… take care of pack things."

"I'm having a few days off and I'm sure Jacob can handle the pack one day without me."

"Okay."

"I'll pick you up tomorrow at ten."

"Thank you."

I nodded and watched as she left to the cashier.

"And tell my son that if he gets caught again, I'm not going to take his side. He can start solving his mess."

Rhea was one of us. A wolf and my son's mate. And she looked lonely, abandoned, and scared. I was doing the right thing.

Rhea blushed again but smiled a little.

When I arrived at Billy's house he was cleaning his gun on the back porch.

"Where's Marianne?"

"Yoga."

Marianne was living with Billy for a couple of weeks now. She was now more than just the person who took care of Billy's meals and clothes. She was a local widow who had been helping Billy for a long time now and since her house was falling apart, Billy finally asked her to move in with him before some tragedy happened.

"I have your meds. Jacob wanted to come but he went to the shop to talk to Embry."

Billy nodded. "Have you seen Becca lately?"

"No. She's a bit mad at me. She thinks I'm siding with Embry because we're pack."

"Embry needs to sort things out," Billy said. "He's having a baby… it's not the end of the world. I mean I know that he must feel conflicted, and he's worried because they shouldn't be having a child at this age, but it happened. It can't be undone, and my daughter needs support."

Billy didn't know half of it. But it wasn't the time or the place to talk about it.

"Talking about children… when were you going to tell us about the Whites?"

Billy lifted his eyes to look at me.

"What are you talking about Leah?"

"You know what. You've always known that the Whites carried the gene but you never told us."

Billy sighed.

"I didn't know. I had a few suspicions but there are no records, no proof, nothing."

"But there were rumors."

"And do you believe in all the rumors you listen to?"

"It depends."

Billy sighed again.

"Are you going to tell me or what?" I insisted.

"I heard things… when I was a boy. My grandmother often said that Ephraim's sisters, Deborah and Susannah had fallen in love with the same boy because they were twins and twins usually like the same things."

"That boy being?"

"Gregory White." He admitted. "He was a playboy or so it was said. He played with both of them even when he was already betrothed to Candice Freeman. And then something happened and both Deborah and Susannah disappeared for a whole summer and when they came back each one married a local boy and resumed their lives but some people say that their relationship was never the same again."

"Do you know what happened?"

"No. No one knows. But when they arrived after that summer, Gus White's wife had a baby. A baby boy named Christopher and Christopher had all the Black's traits: black hair and brown eyes."

"So one of the twins had Greggory's baby, and she gave him to Greg's brother and sister-in-law who already had two girls?" It didn't sound a good explanation to me.

"Gus and Molly had always wanted a boy but after Brenda, their youngest daughter, Molly had four miscarriages in three years. And no one in La Push noticed she was pregnant with Christopher. When they were asked about it, Molly said she didn't want anyone to know because she was afraid it would bring her bad luck. Two months later Greg and Candice got married and that was it."

"Then it's true. Blacks are related to the Whites. Christopher was a Black on his mother's side which means he inherited the wolf gene. He was the first White to carry the gene."

"It's a possibility, yes," Billy admitted.

"Hal was Christopher's son, and he passed the gene on to his daughters, and now his granddaughter is one of us. Vanessa could have phased too… she has the gene. Can you imagine? Vanessa could've been an alpha female. She could've been Jacob's mate instead of me." I was awestruck with the realization. If things had happened differently, Vanessa could've had the life she'd ever wanted with Jacob and I would be alone and angry, probably still hating Sam and Emily for what they had done to me. Or maybe I would be in another state, living a completely different life.

"Vanessa wasn't worthy. You were chosen Leah, not her." Billy stated with a grave tone. "There's only one female wolf for each pack and you fitted the criteria better than any other girl in La Push."

A heavy silence fell over us.

"I'm sorry, Leah. I didn't mean to upset you. I know how you wanted to be free and leave La Push when you were younger but… the pack needed you. Jacob needed you."

"I know Billy. I'm not upset. I mean not anymore. I'm okay with how things are now but I wish I had known about the Whites sooner. I would at least try to keep the girl away from here to spare her. She could've stayed in Seattle and marry her boyfriend and now we wouldn't have to deal with the Whites."

"Things happen for a reason, Leah."

I rolled my eyes.

"Yeah… usually, it's to screw me over. Why didn't you tell us about this?"

"As I said before, all I know were stories I heard when I was a child. When Susannah and Deborah married and had their own families, the rumors stopped."

"They had children? I didn't know about that."

"Yes, Deborah married Brian Lightgood and they had a daughter named Ilona. Susannah married Nathaniel Seabrook and had twin girls named Josie and Janie. The three girls all died at a young age with no children." He put his gun away and watched me closely. "Now that you know what are you going to do?"

"Nothing. I'll just wait to see what happens." I shrugged. "And now I need to go. I have a delicious meal to cook."

Billy waved.

"Go! You better not make my son wait with an empty stomach. He gets grumpy when he's hungry."

"Grumpy doesn't even come close." I laughed.

xxxxxxxxxx

"How long has it been?" Jacob asked kissing my naked shoulder and then sprawling his huge body on our king-sized bed.

"It hasn't been that long…"

"In our bed?" Jacob cut me off. "It was like two months ago when I came home and left Isaac and the twins camping, wasn't it?"

It was not easy to conciliate our professional and personal lives, not that we had stressful professions, but when you have five kids to take care of, it's hard to have time to yourself. And on top of that Jacob and I had the pack. Besides four of our children were now wolves and had enhanced senses, so we had limited our intimate moments for when we were completely alone in the house like now, or we would have to go somewhere else.

"Probably." I shrugged putting on one of his t-shirts while fetching my phone.

"I miss this!" He said cheerfully.

"You miss what?"

"I miss our bed, the clean sheets, and my pillow, I miss not having to get dressed in a hurry, I miss staying in bed holding you in my arms for the night. I miss our alone time indoors."

"Is that supposed to talk me into going back to the bed? Because you're losing your touch, Black,"

"Why don't you come here so I can touch you better, Clearwater,"

"Weren't we supposed to be watching a movie?"

Jacob pulled me into his lap but I still managed to get my phone from my purse. I had texted all of our children before dinner, and none of them had replied.

"Three hours and still no answer. Not even JJ…"

"He's either playing with Lilly and Junior or in bed already. If something had happened, your brother and Gwen would call us."

"What about Isaac?"

"He's with Carlisle in that lab… studying genes and DNA sequences. The kid has weird hobbies."

"I'm worried, okay?"

"About what? Everyone's fine."

"Sarah, Harry and Season, Will and Rhea…"

"Stop thinking about them, Leah. We deserve this break. You can worry about everything tomorrow."

"I'm not saying we don't deserve it but…" Jacob kissed me and slowly removed the phone from my hands.

"Let's enjoy this wonderful bed some more." He grinned forcing me to lie down the mattress. "And then we'll watch a movie."

We didn't watch anything for the rest of the night. Jacob was right. Moments like these were rare and we shouldn't waste them. In the past, I had thought that the wolf gene was a curse. I used to think that I was a fluke. I used to believe that the pack didn't need me. Why would they need a bitter bitch like me? Because I was a bitch back then. Then Jacob happened, we became parents, and I started to enjoy life again. And suddenly being a wolf stopped being a curse and turned more into a blessing.

"Jacob, take your time. We're not going anywhere." I half moaned while he was trying to get rid of the t-shirt I had put on without ripping it too much. "I think you should just lie down and relax… Let me take care of you."

We were older now. Our teen years were long gone, but the wolf gene made us look a lot younger than we were. Unfortunately, that gave even more credit to Rhonda and Vanessa's rumors about us using drugs and steroids.

But age didn't look bad on Jacob. He was still the most perfect man I had ever placed eyes on. And not just because he still had an amazing body. Everything about him was special. He was a kind and gentle soul, slightly stubborn and strong-willed, but fair and pragmatic. A true leader. Jacob was one in a million.

You chose right, Leah Clearwater. My wolf was pleased. We had the perfect mate. There was no one else in the pack that could replace Jacob neither as its leader nor as my mate.

You belong together.

We were mates, the alpha pair. Jacob had claimed me many years ago. Wolves mate for life. The only thing that could separate us now was death but as I danced on top of him, making him chant my name, intertwining our hands together, feeling his essence blend with mine, a stupid thought came to my mind.

What if Jacob had had a choice?
