CHAPTER 2
After I got to the cafeteria, I saw Eddie and Adrian sitting down at a table and went over. I took a seat beside Adrian and looked at the huge pile of food on a tray in front of him.
"It's for you little Dhampir, not me." He said as he passed it over to me.
I smiled at him and picked up a chocolate donut.
"My hero." I said sarcastically still smiling at him.
"I take it that announcement was a part of your plan?" Adrian asked me.
"Yes, it was, I'll explain once everyone is here. Is Lissa and Christian at the feeders?"
"Ya, they should be back any second." Eddie said.
"Ok good, give me time to eat." I said laughing.
After I had eaten 3 doughnuts, Lissa and Christian finally came back.
"Hey Rose, I'm so glad your okay!" Lissa said giving me a hug.
"I'm fine, you should know me better by now, it takes a lot to keep me down."
"I know but I still worry".
"You can even check my aura if you don't believe me."
Lissa sat down beside me and started talking with Eddie and Christian. As I was looking around it became final in my head that what I was doing is right and I will never have any doubts about it.
"So Rose, are you going to tell us what that announcement was about yet?" Eddie asked me after a few moments of talking about whatever.
"Oh, ya right, almost forgot. I got special permission from Kirova to graduate and do my trail earlier then the rest of the novices this year. Apparently she wants to either make a big spectacle about it or a small one, I don't know. I just know that by this time next week I will be a full Guardian working for the school and as Lissa's Guardian till the rest of you graduate." I said proudly.
"What!" They all said together.
"Hey, relax, we don't want the whole school talking about it yet."
"Are you crazy Rose?" Eddie said.
"No, this is a great solution. The academy is down a Guardian now because of Guardian Belikov leaving, Lissa needs a stationed Guardian at the academy, And I get to learn the real-world stuff the teachers won't teach us while being safe in the school still instead of out in the field. As far as I can see it's a win-win situation." I said taking another bite of a doughnut.
"While all those reasons make sense little Dhampir. Don't you think that's a bit … well… rash?" Adrian said calmly.
"I agree it is a bit but, it's what I want. Not only that but Kirova agreed a long with some of the schools Guardians." I said lying a little bit because I knew that would help them stop worrying over it.
"Well, I mean, if they all agreed then we can't stop you." Eddie said after a few minutes of them staring at me thinking.
"See… It's not as bad as it sounds." I said standing up. "I'm going to head to bed I'll see you guys tomorrow."
"Wait. You're not going to come with us to say good-bye to Guardian Belikov?" Christian asked me.
I looked down sad for a moment. "What time is he leaving at?"
"In about an hour. He said he really hoped to talk to you before he left, when we saw him earlier." Lissa said not realizing how that made me feel.
I took a deep breath. "As long as you guys are going to be there, sure. I'll just meet you all at the gate. I'm gonna go for a walk." I said walking away.
As I was walking, I started to think about everything that will be happening in the next week. I started to think about all my past choices and if this is really what I wanted, just like after I had met Dimitri. I shook my head. It had been stupid of me to think about all of that then and it still was now.
I kept walking in silence, looking around making sure I knew what the school grounds looked like normally so I could watchout of anything not normal. As I was, Guardians kept coming up to me congratulating me about getting my graduation moved ahead of time or about becoming apart of "the team". It was weird really. I thought a lot of the would be against it.
It wasn't until I heard the one voice, I didn't want to hear yet call for me that I started to pick up speed in my walk. They kept following me picking up speed a long with me. I kept going faster and faster until I realized, I was at the woods at the edge of campus. I stopped and waited a minute. I didn't hear any footsteps coming towards me or hear his voice. I guess he must have given up at some point and I didn't realize.
I turned around about to head back towards the gate figuring it was almost time to say good-bye when a sudden wave of nausea hit me, and I turned back around to the woods and puked. I stood there leaned up against a tree till it had passed over. Looking at the time I still had thirty minutes till I had to be at the front gate with my friends, so I decided to head to the infirmary to get checked out quick.
As I neared the building for it another wave hit me. I had just made to the side of the building hidden from anyone passing by when I puked again. This time after it passed I went in and right to Dr. Olendzki.
"Rose, my dear, what brings you here?" She asked smiling.
"I need you to do a quick check on me. I … I puked twice today."
Hearing that she new something was going on. Dhampir's don't get sick with the flue or colds. We have a better immune system thanks to our moroi gene's. She brought me in to her office and sat me down and gave me some water and what I assume is an anti-nausea medication. Then she started with all the normal questions. Have I been eating. Have I been sleeping properly. All of those. Then she got to the one question I had replied no to since I was thirteen.
"Alright, last question, Are you sexually active Rose?"
I sighed. "Yes, I am."
"Alright, then, I am going to give you this. It's a pregnancy test. Dhampir a immune to a lot of sicknesses that make you puke, but pregnancy is not one of them my dear. I just need you to take to make sure it's off the list of possibilities."
It made sense that she would ask, not knowing who I have done that with, it would be a normal thing to ask. I had only been with Dimitri and since it was impossible for us to reproduce with each other I saw no harm in doing it. I nodded and got up to take the test.
"I will be right back; I have a couple of others I need to take care of quickly and I will be right back." She said as she left.
I nodded. After I took the test, I sat back down in the chair I had been earlier. When Dr. Olendzki came back in she looked at the test sitting on her desk in a clear bag.
"Well, Rose, Problem solved. You're pregnant." She said smiling.
I was shocked. "Wait… What! That is impossible. I have only had sex with a Dhampir. I can't be pregnant."
"Well, my dear this says you are. We can do a couple more tests if you want to make sure but these are hardly ever wrong."
I just nodded.
"The only thing I can think of is maybe this is an affect of spirit from Vasilisa. There is a lot we don't know about it. Maybe it had an affect on you when she used it on you."
She was right. That is the only possible way that I could be pregnant right now. I got up and said my thanks and gave her a hug. She also gave me some prenatal pills to take everyday. I agreed and left.
I looked at the time and saw I had just enough time to run to the gate and meet everyone while they said good-bye. I started running and made just before they were about to leave.
"Rose you finally made it. I thought you were going to miss seeing them off." Adrian said as he walked over to me.
"Wouldn't miss it." I said in a fake happy voice.
"It'll be alright little Dhampir. He'll be back before you know it." He said giving me a hug.
"Adrian, can you do something quick for me? Can you hide these in your pocket they don't fit in mine?" I said pleadingly.
"Ah, so you know now?"
"wait you know and didn't tell me?" I hissed under my breath.
"I started to se their aura about a week ago. I didn't want to be the one to tell you."
I shook my head. "Thanks for the heads up, instead I found out from puking twice." I said quietly as we walked over to everyone else.
Adrian just smiled and put his arm around me over my shoulder. As we got closer, I heard everyone saying their good-byes to Tasha and Dimitri. Adrian's arm dropped after he saw Dimitri staring at him. I laughed a little and then went into Guardian mode.
"Rose, aren't you going to say good-bye to them?" Lissa asked.
"I hope you had a Nice visit Lady Ozera." I said looking at Tasha.
"Oh Rose I wish we could have spent more time to get to know each other but Dimitri here kept you busy all the time outside of class that we couldn't." she said reaching to give me a hug.
"I mean seriously how much time does a mentor need to be with his student. You were with him even all night some time I swear." She said quietly in my ear as she hugged me.
When she said that I looked at Dimitri. He gave me a look like he was wanting me to understand something that I was missing. I looked away and pulled away from Tasha. I smiled at her half heartedly.
"Ya, he was a tough mentor. But he is the reason that I am as skilled as I am now. Thanks to him my graduation got moved forward. As of next week, I'm going to be Princess Dragomir's new stationary Guardian and working for the school till everyone else is graduated." I said smiling slightly smug.
"Oh really! That's news to us, Isn't it Dimitri?"
"Yes, it is. When was that decided? I certainly didn't say anything, and nothing was said to me." He said looking at me questioningly.
"Headmistress Kirova and I came up with it a few hours ago. It was a simple and obvious solution to Guardian Belikov leaving both the academy and the princess."
"Well, I guess we will have to come back to watch your trail. I'm sure Dimitri would want to watch." She said in what seemed like a forced happiness.
"You both are more then welcomed to watch if that is what you wish Lady Ozera." I said smiling.
"Well, we best get going. Other wise we are going to miss our flight to Russia." Tasha said walking back to the car.
I nodded and stood with my Guardian mask on.
"Can I speak with Rose privately for a minute?" Dimitri asked Tasha.
"Sure, just be quick." Tasha said as she got in the car.
Lissa looked over at me and I smiled and nodded to let her know I was fine. Lissa and Christian said one more final good-bye and walked away. Adrian walked away far enough to give us privacy but not far enough that I couldn't see him.
"Rose, please believe me when I say this is for the best. I wouldn't be doing this if I had another option."
"D… Guardian Belikov, our past is in the past. You were simply my mentor nothing more as you made clear. You are just doing what you want. You are simply doing what you think is best for your career and your future. I understand no need to justify that to your student. You did say on a couple of occasions that you wanted to start a family. She can give you that. I wish all the best to you and hope I will maybe see you next week for my trail on Thursday." I said curtly.
After I finished my speech I turned and walked over to Adrian, who put his arm around me as he started to walk away with me. I kept walking till I heard the car pull away. That's when my tears started to fall, as the love of my life drove away from me.
"Rose, why didn't you tell him about the baby?" Adrian asked after a minute.
"Because as much as I wanted to tell him, it's better if he doesn't know right now. He chose to leave me, who is to say after I told him he would have stayed. I rather tell my kid one day that he is their father and he left me before he knew I was pregnant then tell them that he chose to leave them as well as me."
"I understand, but you are going to tell him eventually, right?"
"If he choses to come back on his own, I will. But right now, he's choosing to go with Tasha."
"Well, then it's decided."
"What is?" I asked laughing slightly.
"Until he knows, I will be the baby's father, or deemed as father. When you start showing people are going to come up with rumors and theories on who the father is. So, until you tell him if it takes that long I will do everything in my power to make sure you and the baby are happy, healthy, and well cared for." He said smiling at me.
"Thanks Adrian, but no offense, I hope it doesn't come to that."
"Me neither little Dhampir, but if it does just know I will do whatever I can to make you happy." He said kissing my forehead.
I smiled and nodded slightly. He pushed me to start walking again and we ended up at his room in guest housing watching movies, playing games and talking all night till I passed out from exhaustion.
