Chapter 5

After I left Dimitri there, I walked straight into Alberta's office.

"Rose, there you are. Sit down please. We have lots to go over."

"Right."

Alberta looked me for a second. "Rose is something the matter you don't look happy, being this is what you wanted and all."

"No, I am happy about that. It's another matter that I have a problem with." I said exasperated.

"Do you want to talk about it. I may be your boss temporarily, but I watched you grow up here and helped raise you. Your as close to a daughter to me as it can get without you actually being my daughter."

"I told the father." I said straight to the point.

"And…?"

"And he doesn't believe me that he's the father."

"Why is that?" She asked letting her anger show through her guardian mask.

"Because… because he's a Dhampir." I said quickly.

Alberta looked at me shocked. "How is that possible Rose? Not only that but you do have to understand why he would be doubtful about that."

"I know but he's the only one I've been with that way. The doctor think's it has something to do with being shadow kissed. That somehow Lissa changed/cure that part of me so I can reproduce with a Dhampir. Its crazy I know but it's the only explanation."

"Well, if all of that is true then, you must tell me who so I can make training extra hard for them." She said laughing slightly.

I laughed with her and smiled.

"Cheer up Rose. You're not the only Dhampir to go through this kind of thing, though it's normally with a moroi, but they all get through it and so will you. Besides, you have so many people that will support you in every way, including me and other Guardians here on Campus." She said getting up and giving me a hug.

"Thanks Alberta, I needed to hear that."

"Anytime Rose. Now about your schedule." She said grabbing some papers off her desk. "As you are new to all this I have it set up that for the first week any ward patrol you do will be done with a partner. They will teach you the basics and what to look out for. As for your classroom watches you have seen the just of it while in classes, except for combat classes. Those classes you will be partnering up with one of the teachers to teach. Helping the younger students learn and hone their skills."

"Are you sure you want me teaching kids?"

"Rose you are going to be a mother soon if you don't work well with kids now you never will work well with your own child." She said smiling slightly.

She had a point, if I couldn't handle kids that had already been taught right and wrong then I probably wouldn't have a chance with my own.

"For the most part you will be sticking with classroom watch and a couple of ward shifts. Your typical day will be the afternoon with the lower-level novices then on weekends except for when the princess leaves campus you will be on ward duty. Understand?"

"So far, yes, But if I may didn't you say you were going to put me in spots that didn't put me in risks way of the baby getting hurt?"

"Normally, yes, but the lower levels don't hit hard and are very under trained. You can easily defend and deflect their moves. Plus you are more then welcomed to make them aware of your situation if need be. They also do a lot of poisoning then actual hand to hand combat."

I nodded agreeing with her. After she explained a few more things to me and gave me a Guardian key card so I could access any part of the campus in case of an emergency, she sent me on my way to go and prepare for my first class.

I looked at my schedule as I headed back to my room.

11:00 pm – 11:50 am

Basic Weight Training and Conditioning

Elementary Gymnasium 1

1:00 am – 1:50 am

Basic Guardian Combat Techniques

Elementary Gymnasium 1

2:00 am – 3:00 am

Bodyguard Theory and Personal Protection 1

E building Room 1001

All in all, not a bad schedule though I felt bad for the novices that had to do all that exercise then go and sit down in Stan's class. Heck I felt bad for myself having to sit through his class still.

Once I got to my room, I changed into some basic workout outfit and packed a change of clothes in my gym bag a long with 2 full water bottles. I took a quick look at the time and saw I had about 30 minutes to get to my first class. I left and started walking over.

As I was walking, I had a couple Novices from my year either congratulate me, wolf whistle, or ask if they would get in trouble for hitting on me now that I was a guardian. I laughed at those ones and told them they would never have a chance to begin with for it to even be a problem.

Once I made it to the elementary gym, I saw Guardian Alan setting up equipment for the students. He didn't notice me till I was almost behind him.

"Bad training on your part Alan. Makes me wonder how these kids training will be." I said jokingly.

"So, they stuck you with me, eh. Maybe these kids have a chance now." He said laughing along with me.

"Maybe, So what the plan for them? Some basic weights and cardio?"

"Well actually today I thought I'd switch the classes. These kids have me for 2 hours straight, so I try to switch things up a little bit. Though now that you're here they will probably want to do the Rose Hathaway training."

"Oh come on it won't be that bad will it?"

"Oh ya, these kids adore you. You're the Badass that ran away from school for 2 years, didn't die, and still graduated early. I think you are a new legend among Guardians everywhere, not just the school."

"Oh jeez, Well, do you mind if I go for a warmup run before, we start?"

"Go a head I'll need at least fifteen minutes to do attendance and tell them what wee are doing."

"Sweet thanks. I'm just going to go out to the track."

I headed out to the track and put my earbuds in. I played a random playlist, and set a fifteen-minute timer, on my phone and started my run. By the time the timer had gone off I was able to do 8 laps. Turns out all that running Dimitri made me do worked.

When I entered the class, everyone turned to see who had entered. I waved nervously and walked to the front of the room to stand beside Alan. He pretended to not notice my arrival back. After about two minutes he sighed and turned to me.

"They're not paying attention to me so do you want to do your intro and lead they probably won't do what I want anyway." Alan said laughing.

"If your sure…" I said taking his place. "Hello everyone, my name is Rose Hathaway. You can all call me Rose. Yes, I am a Guardian, no I do not want to hear Guardian Hathaway to me that is my mother. Yes, I have survived outside the wards with the princess Dragomir for two years. Yes, I have killed two strigoi, which you will hear about later in your other class. Finally remember up until yesterday I was just a student here at the academy a long with you. Now any questions?"

"Can we train like you?" A boy from the back said.

I gave a little chuckle and looked to Alan. "Well?"

"Go a head my class is officially yours." He said laughing.

"Alright then, First things first. How many laps can you guys do?"

I went one by one and they all told me their names and their lap count. The most was 6 laps in 30 minutes. It was a little sad, but I remembered these guys were only about 15 or 16.

"Uh, Rose? Why does it matter how many laps we can do?" Said a kid named mark I think he had his name was said.

"Good question, Kind of gives me a bit of déjà vu to be honest. Alright who can tell me what they would do if they cam face to face with a strigoi?"

"Fight them, and kill them, what else would we do?" Said a girl from the front, I think her name was Marie.

"Your right that's what a fully trained Guardian would do. You lot on the other hand do not. I am telling you right now the first time you see a Strigoi, you will freeze, all of you. If you were out in the real world right now, you would have fully trained Guardians with you to fight that is their job. Yours is to run. You run as fast as you can and get to safety. If you had a moroi with you, you stay with them in a safe spot that is away from the strigoi. If that means you pick your moroi up and carry them to safety that is what you do. Is that clear?"

When everyone was nodding their heads, I smirked briefly.

"That is the first step you try to do even as a promised Guardian. You try and run and find an escape to safety. Your second is to fight if there is no other choice." I said as I rubbed the back of my neck, thinking of what happened in Spokane.

"Alright, now everyone you have 30 minutes to run laps. I will make it fun even. If you can outrun me, I'll give you extra training outside of class if your up for it."

A chorus of "Really" and "Sweet" was heard as everyone left the gym.

"that was kind of mean, don't you think?" Alan asked me.

I smirked. "Nope, it gives them something to try for. Motivates them to try for better then they can do."

I left the gym after about five minutes to see how many laps they had done. I was surprised to find a couple of them were already on their third lap. I set another timer on my phone for 25 minutes and then went and matched pace with the guy in the front. He smirked at me.

"Those training sessions are as good as mine." He said after we finished another lap.

"You think so? How many laps have you done?"

"This is my 4th lap now and your three laps behind."

"Not bad kid, but it's going to take more then a 3-lap lead to beat me." I said smiling at him.

I slowly started to pick up speed and he tried to keep up with me. After about the third lap I got board and started running my normal pace and just kept going till my phone went off. By that time, I had done about 30 laps. I looked over at the students and outright laughed. Some were leaning on the trees, while others were laying on the ground getting water poured on to them by the students that were still able to stand.

"Okay so you guys clearly need to up your stamina. I'll give you all a ten-minute break after you do some cool down stretches, if you don't your muscles will hurt like there is no tomorrow till you get a hot shower." I said as I walked past them back to the gym.

"I told you that was unfair. You surpassed all of them by at least 10 laps." Alan said as he walked up to me with my water.

"You are right I should have maybe went a bit easier on them, but now they know what it fels like to push themselves, and what they are capable of if they try."

"Yes, but maybe after they do cool down, we could let them go for the day do shower and clean up?"

"I was going to even if you hadn't said anything. Plus, you know this is your class right not mine." I said laughing.

"Not today, it's not." He said laughing with me.

As the student's started to slow come back in and talk amongst themselves I had to admire that they could all still be kids. Oblivious to real world drama. The biggest problem they had was who was dating who, or their marks in class. I shook my head at how long ago that felt for me.

"Alright everyone great work today. How do you feel?" Alan asked once everyone was in.

"How do you think we feel? We just got our butt's handed to us even Dominic, and he's the best in our grade!" Said Mark.

"Don't feel bad I also have more training and experience then you guys, plus I had a really good mentor."

"Ya, didn't you have the Russian god as your mentor?" Asked the student I now knew was Dominic.

"Yes, I did. If you thought what we just did was hard then you wouldn't last a day with him here. On my first day back on training, after he brought me and the princess back, I was no better off by the end of it then you guys are now. But I found something worth training to protect and after it did not matter how much I train and was sore after. I wanted to get better for my reason."

"So, what was your reason then?" Asked Marie.

I hesitated. "Love. Specifically, the ones I love. The ones I want to protect. The princess being one of the biggest ones."

Everyone staired at me thoughtfully. Thinking of their own reasons to train.

I sat on the bench and thought about the real person I wanted to train for, Dimitri. When I started training after we came back it was for Lissa's sake that I wanted to, but after a while it became Dimitri. I wanted to show him how strong I could be with him, because of him.

"Alright guys time to hit the showers. You guys did enough for today." Alan said after a while.

"Wait a minute. We don't know who won." Said Dominic.

"Okay fine here." I said as I walked over to a white board. I grabbed the marker and made four columns and labeled them as 5, 10, 15, and 20.

"I want everyone to come up and put a dash under the closest number to the amount of laps you did." I said looking at everyone.

One by one everyone went up. Once the last one went up it was already obvious that only one of them cam even close to my amount.

"Alright now, out of those numbers the next highest number by five is your goal. Once you get it you go up to the next. Does everyone understand?" I asked.

Everyone nodded their head and waited for me to say who had won.

"Who got 20 or close to?"

"I did. I did 17 laps in total." Said Dominic proudly.

"Good job. You were 13 off from me. Not bad for someone your age and with your training."

"Wait you seriously did 30 laps in 25 minutes? That is incredible. If Guardian Belikov is a god then you must be a goddess. You're probably the only one that could match him." Said Marie.

I smiled and shook my head. "The only reason I even have a chance against him is because I trained with him for so long, that I know all of his moves and his little warning signs, you could say. Anyway, that is enough for today, get out of here, and go shower. I'll see you all in Guardian Alto's class."

Everyone got up and left saying good-byes as they did. I was just about to help pack up when Alan told me he had it and to go shower and change as well. I laughed but agreed heading back to my room with my stuff.

A little while later I was in Stan's class and just as I thought he wanted me to retell my story of what happened in Spokane. That is exactly all the class was that day was me telling my story, scaring the kids, and answering questions. After the bell rang, I left and went to dinner I sat down with my friends and had a good time telling them about my day and how it went since they were curious. At one point, Eddie made a joke saying I should not be sitting with them because I was not a student anymore. To which I replied by pushing his chair out from under him.

After dinner was done, I walked with Adrian back to his room.

"So, little Dhampir, what did the cradle robber want earlier?" He asked as he lit a smoke while walking.

"To apologise, then followed by him telling me that it's not his kid."

"He believed me yesterday?" He said surprised.

"Ya, he did, just not about him being the father."

"I'm sorry Rose. Is there anything I could do to help?"

"No, not unless you can somehow make him believe. Although after what he said last night, I don't think I want him even around me or the baby."

"Care to enlighten me as to what exactly happened after you left with him?"

"When we get to your place, I will. I don't want anyone over hearing."

"Understandable little Dhampir."

We walked in silence the rest of the way. I took the time to think and sort my thoughts out. When Dimitri left, I had decided to show everyone I wasn't a child, including Dimitri, and I still wanted to do that. But me finding out I'm pregnant certainly changed my plans. My original plan was to graduate, then go guard Lissa. It was simple, all I had to do was what I was trained for. Now I had someone else's life to think about.

Then there was Dimitri. I couldn't figure out what I wanted with him. I knew I wanted him to be apart of his child's life. It was one of the things he wanted more then anything in the world. When he chose to be with me after I graduated, he chose to give the whole notion of a family up. Now that, by some miracle, we could have one, he doesn't believe me that he's the father. Then there was everything he has said to me the past 2 days.

After what he said last night about Tasha knowing about him and me, it made more sense with what she said before she left. It also made sense as to why he left, but it didn't make sense as to why he slept with her. I could forgive him leaving, that I don't think I ever can forgive. I could even understand him not believing me about who the father was, being he was right it should have been impossible.

The other thing I wasn't sure I could forgive was what he had said about me last night. Regardless of if he believed me or not what he said was completely uncalled for. When some random person that I didn't care for said that about me, it was nothing. It hurt yes, but hearing it come from someone I care about was completely different.

Once we got to Adrian's room, I told him everything I was feeling. He sat and listened to everything I needed to get off my mind and everything that had happened last night. He didn't say anything the whole time, but I could tell by his facial expressions he was not happy in slightest bit.

"I'm going to be honest with you Rose. The guy is definitely on the top kill list." I gave slight chuckle.

"You and me both right now."

"Only difference is I actually might, you wouldn't." He said pull me over to the couch to sit down. "Look, you have to look at the bright side. He now knows about baby Rose, right? So now you will really learn the kind of guy he is. If he choses to leave the baby, regardless of if he believes you or not. Even if there were another guy that could be the father, just that there is a chance he is the father, and he still leaves. Then do you really want to be with him or have him around?"

"Your right Adrian. I really can only wait and see what he does."

"All you can really do is make the best of the time until he does, and then make an even better situation out of what he does pick. You don't have to be miserable just because he can't figure out that, even before the baby, you are worth so much more then what he is doing to you and putting you through."

I smiled. "Thanks Adrian."

He put his arm around me and kissed my temple. "Now how about we watch a movie and relax for the rest of the night?"

"Sounds great." I said as I cuddled into his side.

We picked a movie and sat quietly watching. This is exactly what I needed, a night just relaxing and not worrying about anyone else.
