Chapter 17: Seventeenth Version
"May I have this dance?" Will smirked at Olivia as she sat on the Doctor's knee next to the fire. She looked up at him with wide eyes, chewing on a piece of venison from the deer roasting on the spit over another fire before she looked to the Doctor with an asking smile.
"Fine, go ahead, you star-struck girl," he grumbled, gently pushing her off his knee as she swallowed her mouthful. She beamed at him and leaned over to press a kiss to his cheek before wiping her hands and taking the one Will offered her. "No funny business! Remember, she's my wife!"
Will pulled her away as she giggled when he danced her around the fire to a lively tune the musicians, led by Alan-a-Dale himself, a man Olivia swore looked like Frank Sinatra, but the Doctor kept his lip zipped about that. He watched them dancing around, noting someone sitting next to him but keeping his gaze on his wife.
"Will's a charmer, but he's no thief of married women," Robin assured the Doctor, holding out a handful of berries and the Doctor helped himself to a few, never taking his eyes off Olivia and Will. "Especially a woman so happily married."
"I'm not worried about him charming her," the Doctor replied, smiling when Little John cut in to dance with Olivia. "Quite the opposite. Olivia can be charming without meaning to be."
"As I can see," Robin chuckled, watching John twirl her around and making her laugh. They were silent for a moment before he asked, "What are you hiding, Doctor?"
The Doctor finally pulled his gaze from Olivia and frowned at Robin who looked to him expectantly.
"Ey?"
"There is more to why those…things were here, isn't there?" Robin elaborated, popping a berry into mouth, making the Doctor's frown deepen in wonder at him.
"How did you—?"
"There are some things you can't hide from someone used to keeping secrets," Robin replied. "So, do you care to tell me if we are in more danger?"
The Doctor sighed before looking back to Olivia as she now danced with an unsteady Friar Tuck.
"The Daleks and the Cybermen are from my world," he began. "I don't believe in coincidence. They were here for some reason…I just haven't found out what it is yet."
"Do you have an idea?" Robin wondered, holding out his handful of berries again and the Doctor took a few more.
"The nice version?" the Doctor replied. "It was a coincidence and I'm over thinking it. The scary version? They were dumped here by a crack in time/space that also happens to be another dimension leading to my home planet."
Robin frowned at him, wondering if he should've even asked for an explanation before he looked to Olivia and another question dawned on him.
"Have you told Olivia any of this?" he asked, making the Doctor glance at him before his gaze glued back onto Olivia.
"No," he replied, solemnly. "I don't want her to worry."
"I understand," Robin nodded. "But it seems to be a woman's lot in life to worry…whether we give them cause or no."
"True," the Doctor chuckled. "But I told her I'd explain it when we get back to the TARDIS. I may be wrong."
"Let's hope you are," Robin nodded. "Whatever you said about that crack that I didn't really understand, it seems distressing to you, my friend."
"Only a bit," the Doctor confirmed, before straightening when Olivia skipped around the fire toward him, grinning.
"Come dance with me!" she grinned, leaning down to grab his hand and drag him to his feet.
"Good luck, mate," Robin chuckled before his smile fell when Marian came running toward him. "Marian, no! I'm not dancing!"
Olivia and the Doctor laughed at Marian trying to pull Robin to his feet, but he turned the tables on her when he grabbed onto her arm and pulled her onto him, rolling them over to kiss her passionately and making his men wolf whistle and cat call. Olivia pulled the Doctor right next to Alan-a-Dale and his group of musicians, nodding to him and making the Doctor frown between them in wonder.
"What do you have planned, you little trouble maker?" he smirked down at her.
She gave a wink then released his hand, taking a step back and making him frown at her in wonder, but when Alan and the musicians started a slow song, he realized one of them must have taught her a dance of the times and she was surprising him…as she always did.
He straightened and placed his hands behind his back as she curtsied and he bowed. As they took a step toward each other, he wanted to scoop her up in his arms and hold her, but he forced himself to take a step back, as the dance called for it. They moved in perfect sync as they stepped close again then circled each other, their eyes never leaving the other's and the smile never leaving Olivia's face, making him smile in return. They stepped back then stepped forward, raising their left hands to touch between them, their fingers lightly curling around the other's and entwining before lowering them and stepping back. They repeated the gesture with their right hands, and unable to hold himself back any longer, he grabbed her waist and lifted her high off her feet as she giggled, her hands gripping his shoulders to support herself as he grinned up at her.
Their eyes remained locked as he turned them before he slowly lowered her back to her feet, making sure he pulled her as close as possible to feel her against him when he did. When her lips passed his forehead she pressed a kiss to it, her nose brushing his when that passed his as well, and he couldn't help but plant his lips to hers when she was finally on her feet, his hands still on her waist and her hands never leaving his shoulders. The men cat called and whistled again as the music continued, but they didn't notice as he kissed her as deeply as he could and the surge of passion made one of her feet pop up as her arms slid around his neck to pull him closer.
Alan started up some lively music again, and they were soon surrounded by dancing people as they finally emerged from their kiss, grinning like mad at each other. He wrapped his arms tighter around her waist as he grabbed her right hand and grinned down at her as she giggled.
"Andiamo!" he called, dancing her around, making her laugh as her feet barely touched the ground, and she felt like Deborah Kerr being danced around by Yul Brynner in The King and I. As if reading her mind, he started humming Shall We Dance as they danced around the fire and she laughed out loud at him. He suddenly stopped, twirling her out with one hand before twirling her back and wrapping his arms around her from behind, snuggling up to her cheek and making her giggle.
"Happy Valentine's day," he whispered, pressing a kiss to her cheek and she grinned up at him over her shoulder.
"I know this was a mistake…and there were Daleks…and Cybermen, but tonight makes up for all of it," she grinned, snuggling closer to him. "Happy Valentine's day."
He grinned and looked up at the full moon, as did she. They stared up at it for a moment, a yard or so away from the dancing group.
"You think they dropped out of the Crack, don't you?" she murmured after a moment, making him sigh and bow his head to her shoulder.
"Yes," he groaned, making her unable to help smiling because she'd guessed what he was trying to hide. "How do you do that?"
"Intuition, perception, the fact that you can't hide anything from me; take your pick," she shrugged, unmoving before adding, "How bad is it?"
"Bad enough," he replied. "If Daleks and Cybermen can get through it to our dimension…what else can?"
"I can only imagine," she murmured before turning in his arms and making frown down at her in wonder. "What will you do?"
"Analyze the information from the Dalek ship," he sighed, lifting a hand to brush some of her hair from her face, making her smile, sweetly. "Maybe find out what else could've come through with them."
"It explains why they couldn't get themselves repaired properly," she nodded. "Not only were they from a different dimension…but a different time altogether."
"Two different times," he agreed before pulling her closer to press a kiss to her temple. "I miss Amelia."
"Me too," she sighed, wrapping her arms around his chest to hug him, tightly. "Let's go home?"
"If you like, my love," he grinned. "We'll try a getaway trip some other time, eh?"
"I dread to think where we'll end up," Olivia chuckled, pulling away to head back toward the camp.
"Oi! You'll pay for that!" the Doctor retorted, rushing after her as she burst into a run back to the camp, laughing as he chased her.
Some Time Later...
"I don't want a party for her," Olivia insisted from the kitchen in the house the Doctor had bought for them, cleaning dishes that had piled up from when they spent time there, Amelia sitting in a high chair picking at cheerios on the tray in front of her. "She won't remember it anyway. She's just turning one."
"But it's her first year!" the Doctor insisted, sitting in the chair in front of Amelia and smiling at her as she made noises with her tongue and vocalized, testing her tongue and voice as she picked up a sticky handful of cheerios. He smoothed his fingers through her black curls, making her look up at him as she shoved her hand into her mouth, making him chuckle as she drooled all over her hand. "It's a milestone, Liv! It's one of the things I love about humans…the way you mark things with holidays and birthdays and all sorts of celebrations."
"I know," she smiled, lifting a dish towel to dry her hands before turning to head toward them. "But don't you want her to remember it?"
"What makes you think she won't remember?" he frowned in wonder before looking to Amelia just as she made a raspberry at the two of them. "I think she'll remember. If she's got a memory like her mum, which I'm sure she has."
"Well, why don't you just ask her if she wants a party for her first birthday, hm?" she smirked, leaning next to him to press a kiss to his cheek.
"I will," he chirped, turning to Amelia and taking one of her tiny hands as it curled tightly around his finger. "Would you like a party for your first birthday, my little Amelia?"
She made a few noises that made the Doctor grin and Olivia roll her eyes but she couldn't help but smile.
"That's it then!" he grinned up at Olivia. "We'll have a party! I'll arrange everything, and you, my dear sweet Liv, make all the calls."
"Arrange?" she frowned as he leaned forward to press a kiss to Amelia's little hand before sneering and wiping his mouth when he realized her hand had been covered in baby drool. Olivia couldn't help but laugh at the face as Amelia giggled as well before Olivia chuckled, "What are you arranging?"
"Just call your mum and anyone else you want to be here," he grinned, slinging an arm around her shoulders to press a kiss to her cheek. "You have a few weeks, after all. Plenty of time, yes?"
"Y-Yeah, but—"
"She'll remember and she'll love it, Liv," he murmured, hugging her before releasing her and nearly skipping toward the glass door leading from the kitchen to the back yard. "I'll be in the TARDIS if you need me!"
"Of course you will," Olivia smirked as he ran out the door and she took a cloth to wipe the drool from Amelia's face and hands as she finished off her cheerios then lifted her from the high chair. "When is he anywhere else, right sweetie?"
Olivia chuckled and kissed her little belly, making Amelia giggle before she pulled her baby closer to dance around the kitchen, humming some random song. She didn't notice the Doctor heading back to the door and stop in the threshold with a smile, watching her dance as Amelia laughed her baby laugh.
"Do you know, little Amelia, I can dance circles around your father," Olivia smiled. "Which brings me to the next adventure of The Doctor and Mrs. Sigma. After leaving Ramses the Little Shape-shifter with his parents, the Doctor took Mrs. Sigma to a place called New New York—"
"Technically it's New New New New New New New New New New New New New New New York," the Doctor piped up, making her turn to him and grin as he approached them, stepping in front of Olivia to place one arm around her waist and the other on her hand as she held Amelia's to dance them both around the kitchen. "It's probably on its seventeenth version, now. And yes, your mother danced circles around me, but I had a few good moves as well."
"Before the Cyberman showed up and ruined everything," she muttered. "Stupid aliens, messing up our dates."
"Doc…tor."
They froze and the Doctor and Olivia stared at each other in wide-eyed shock and disbelief before looking to Amelia who was now chewing on her free hand.
"Did she just…?"
"I think she…?"
"Doctor."
Olivia burst into a grin and hugged Amelia close as she cheered and the Doctor threw his arms up in the air as he grinned as well.
"She said her first word!" he cheered before throwing his arms around both of them and lifting them to twirl them around once before setting them down and pulling Amelia from her mother's arms. "Give me my little girl! She's gonna be such a daddy's girl with a first word like that, eh?!"
"I have to call mom!" Olivia reported, pulling her phone from her pocket as the Doctor kissed Amelia all over her face, making her giggle as her little hands flailed up and down.
"Wouldn't it be smashing if her next word was TARDIS?!" he grinned as Olivia dialed her mother.
"Like father like daughter," she smirked.
Amelia's Birthday...
"I can't believe her first word was Doctor," Aaron grumbled, stabbing at a piece of the cake Joyce had made, and Olivia chuckled as she stepped behind him with another piece of cake, pressing a kiss to his head before tousling his hair. She handed the plate to Jack who sat next Aaron at the table outside beside the TARDIS, under the weeping willow tree.
"I can," Jack smirked, taking the plate from Olivia with a wink. "He's just upset her first word wasn't Bun-Bun."
"I'll call you the second she says it, Uncle Aaron," Olivia assured him as she sat on the Doctor's knee while Amelia sat on a mat covering the grass with Anwen, Gwen and Rhys' daughter, Gwen sitting on the grass with them. "I'm glad you and Rhys could make it, Gwen. Amelia needs a friend closer to her age. She's only ever around adults that act like children."
"Oi! Your mother doesn't act like a child," the Doctor reminded her, making everyone laugh.
"I'm glad we could finally visit!" Gwen grinned as Rhys and Joyce came out from the kitchen, both with plates of cake in each hand. "I'm sorry we missed Christmas."
"My fault," Rhys confessed, handing a plate to Gwen and sitting himself with the children as well. "I had to work and Gwen wouldn't leave without me."
"It's alright," Joyce smiled, handing her plates to Olivia and the Doctor. "Any more people and my house would've exploded. Unlike the TARDIS, my house is not bigger on the inside."
"We can fix that," the Doctor smirked, taking a bite of cake.
"No, thank you, Alien-who-married-my-daughter," Joyce smirked back, turning to head back toward the house. "I will not have my house experimented on by a madman in a box."
"Come on, mom, it could be fun," Olivia teased, making Joyce roll her eyes with a smile and a wag of a finger at.
"Come here, Mrs. F," Jack smiled, grabbing her by the waist to sit her on his knee. "Get off your feet for a bit."
"Right in front of me," Aaron snapped. "Really?!"
"Oh, don't start, you two," Olivia sighed as Joyce tried to escape Jack's grip, but he held her fast. "Release my mother, Harkness, or I shall be forced to use the Stun Gun on you."
"She's good with it, too," the Doctor warned, through a mouthful of cake.
"Fine," Jack sighed, letting Joyce go and she straightened herself out as she turned her nose up at Jack.
"You're lucky Shane isn't here," she retorted. "He'd knock you out in one punch."
"Still seeing the S.E.A.L.?" Aaron smirked as she sauntered back into the house.
"I'm waiting for her to tell me I get to call him 'Daddy' soon," Olivia smirked through a bite of cake.
"Shut up!" Joyce screeched, making them all laugh heartily.
That Night...
The Doctor and Olivia stared down at Amelia as she slept, clutching her Bun-Bun and sucking her thumb. Olivia leaned down to pull her thumb from her mouth, making the Doctor frown in wonder.
"She never did that before," he whispered as Olivia stood tall next to him again.
"She's still teething," Olivia murmured. "When she's really tired she does it. We'll have to put something on her thumb to keep her from doing that."
"I think it's cute," he smiled.
"You won't think it's so cute when she pulls her thumb out of her mouth and gets her spit all over you," she chuckled, then giggled when she looked up at him and he made a face. "Not to mention she might end up buck-toothed."
"Bucked-tooth can be adorable," he whispered, making her roll her eyes as he leaned down to stroke her head, affectionately. "Can you believe it's been a year already, Liv?"
"No," she smiled. "It feels like the time just flew. She's getting so big."
"Too big," he agreed then frowned as he muttered, "Bloody hell, I'm gonna have to fight off lads that try to take her from me."
Olivia laughed, softly, turning to wrap her arms around him and his arms slipped around her shoulders as she smiled, "I hardly doubt she'd choose an idiot for a boyfriend or husband."
"You did."
"No, I chose a genius who gave me a gorgeous daughter and a life full of adventure."
"Same thing."
Olivia lightly slapped his chest, making him chuckle before leaning down to press a kiss to the side of her head.
"We should get to bed," he whispered into her ear and she nodded before pulling away from him to take his hand and lead him to their room.
"Did you have a chance to analyze the information from the Dalek ship yet?" Olivia asked as they stepped into the room and she made her way to the dresser to pull out a pair of pajamas for the both of them.
"It's encrypted," he sighed, stripping off his suit jacket and starting to unbutton his waistcoat. "The TARDIS is working on it. There's something embedded in the data."
"Embedded?" she frowned in wonder, handing him a pair of white pajamas with rainbow stripes, making him smirk at her as she winked at him before she turned to the bed to toss her own pajamas on the bed to start undressing. "You think they were trying to hide something?"
"They're Daleks," he muttered, pulling off his waistcoat. "They always have a hidden motive. But if the Cybermen were in on this as well, then we're all in big trouble. Can you imagine the two of them teaming up?"
"Don't even think it," she shuddered, visibly as they changed into their pajamas. "You'll jinx it."
"All will be revealed when I look it over," he assured her, flopping onto the bed as she sat next to him on the other side, giggling when he bounced on the mattress. He smiled at her as she settled next to him and leaned on an elbow to look down at him with a matching smile. "I love you, Liv."
"I love you, Theta," she smiled, resting against him to press a kiss to his lips, letting him wrap his arms around her to pull her closer. "I think Amelia had a wonderful time today."
"She did," he smiled. "Last thing she said before she drifted off was how much fun she had with Anwen, Auntie Gwen and Uncle Rhys."
"Gwen and Rhys will be happy about that," she chuckled. "I'm glad. Maybe next year we take her to Disneyland?"
"You have an unhealthy obsession with that place," he muttered, making her smack his chest lightly and he laughed before lowering his face to kiss her playfully. She gave a small squeal when he rolled onto her, kissing her all over her face and making her laugh.
The Next Morning...
"Blast this thing!" the Doctor growled, shoving the toaster away and it hit the wall as Olivia turned a frown to him, Amelia jumping and bursting into loud cries in her high chair where Olivia was trying to feed her.
"Theta!" Olivia scolded, putting the jar of baby food down as they switched places and he plopped into the chair where Olivia had been sitting while she stepped toward the offending toaster. "What's wrong with it now?"
"It turns bread into charcoal!" he snapped, trying to calm Amelia by taking one of her tiny hands in his and gently shushing her, running his other hand over her hair and cheek. "If I wanted charcoal I'd go get it from a grill."
"Did you try checking the setting?" Olivia questioned as Amelia's cries calmed and the Doctor picked up her jar of food to feed her.
"Of course I did," he chirped. "Why wouldn't I?"
Olivia looked to the setting on the side, rolling her eyes and adjusting it before pulling the pieces of, indeed, charcoal out of the slots then placed two pieces of bread into it, pushing the slider down.
"You didn't," she sighed, turning back to him as he frowned up at her. "It was set for dark. On that setting, you get charcoal."
"Why would anyone want burnt toast?" he questioned as she tossed the two pieces of burnt-beyond-belief toast into the trash under the sink.
"It's good for a stomachache," she shrugged, stepping closer to him as he made the TARDIS noise while waving a spoon in front of the now happy Amelia.
"TARDIS coming in for a landing on the slobbery, smelly moon of Amelia's taste buds," he coaxed, pushing the spoon toward her mouth.
Olivia laughed as he made a face at their daughter, opening his mouth wide and the baby imitated his face, letting him place the spoon in her mouth and she closed it around the spoon to eat. Some food spilled onto her lower lip which the Doctor gathered with the spoon as Olivia had showed him before he grinned up at Olivia, a proud daddy feeding his little girl.
"Been a while," he admitted, scooping some more food from the jar to feed it to Amelia. "But I think I'm getting the hang of it."
"That's right," she breathed, making him look up at her in wonder as her smile fell. "You had a family on Gallifrey."
"A long time ago, Liv," he assured her, turning back to feeding Amelia. "By the time I fought in the Time War…they were long gone. But I never got to do this for my children. I was the worker and my wife stayed at home."
"Do you…miss them?" she wondered, not knowing whether or not she really wanted to know.
"I do, at times," he nodded, making another face at Amelia, sticking his tongue out and his daughter imitated him, making him giggle as he fed her. "They'll always have a place in my heart."
Olivia nodded as he looked back at her with a warm smile, taking her hand and making her look to him in wonder.
"But you two are my family now," he smiled. "And I love you two as much, if not more, than them."
Olivia smiled before leaning down to press a kiss to his cheek, tousling his curly hair and making him chuckle before he turned back to feeding Amelia.
"Bring me my Sonic," he ordered, making her frown as she stood tall. "I'm going to be manly and fix that toaster so it makes perfect toast."
"Using the Sonic is cheating," she smirked, turning to head for the TARDIS, where he'd left it and he stuck his tongue out at her before turning back to Amelia.
"It's a screwdriver, yes?" he called back as she opened the door.
"Only just," she retorted, stepping through the door and shutting it behind her.
The Doctor lifted the spoonful of baby food and was about to give it to his daughter before lifting the jar to see what flavor it was.
"Pears?" he sneered with a frown before looking back to Amelia who gave a baby laugh, clapping her little hands, experimentally and he leaned in to look her in the eye. "How can you like pears? You mustn't be my daughter. Don't tell your mum I said that."
She made a raspberry, spitting little bits of food into his face and he jerked back before wiping his face and wagging a scolding finger at him as she laughed.
"That's it, no pony for you, little lady."
A familiar sound caught his ear, making him frown as a gust blew up around them from the open door, leading to the backyard. He looked to the TARDIS to see it dematerializing, making him shoot to his feet and race for the open door, but he stopped at the threshold. His hearts raced in panic as the TARDIS disappeared, knowing Olivia wouldn't just leave. The box disappeared completely and he raced out into the yard, standing where the TARDIS had been before looking up, his eyes wide as he searched for the ship, hopefully twirling through the air and heading back home.
"Olivia!"
