Chapter 18: Eighteenth Birthday
Olivia sighed as she shut the TARDIS door behind her, leaning back on it with a grin. She couldn't recall being this happy. She finally felt she had the best of both worlds: Adventures and family. And all with a man she loved utterly and completely. She couldn't even imagine life without him now.
"Sonic," she recalled with a sigh, still grinning as she approached the console, searching for the screwdriver.
She hummed a happy tune while she stepped around the console, looking on its surface and beneath it. She sighed when she stood tall, placing her hands on her hips as she frowned in wonder when she couldn't find it. She was about to head down the stairs when she noticed a lever on the console shift, making her frown deepen slightly before the telltale sound of take-off filled the room. Her eyes shot wide and she shouted in surprise when the TARDIS thrashed to one side, sending her into the panel she was standing next to before she stared around the room.
"What are you doing?!" she shouted, racing toward the console to try flying it. "Theta's not here! Wherever you're going, take me back, now!"
The TARDIS thrashed again, sending her toward the jump seat with another shout, as if to answer her. She shoved herself out of the seat and raced around the console to the scanner, staring huge eyes at the screen. It was still running the decryption on the data from the Dalek ship, even as the TARDIS thrashed, making her grab onto the edge of the console to keep herself steady. She tried the controls again, but the ship didn't respond, her attention turning to the scanner again when it beeped, reading the words across the screen.
Decryption Successful
She frowned when a sound filled the room, mixing with the sound of the engines, and she knew she had heard it before.
It was a rhythm…a four beat rhythm.
"No," she breathed in realization before shouting in pain and doubling over, throwing her hands up to her ears, trying to block the sound that she was sure was causing that pain in her head.
The TARDIS thrashed again, sending her fully to the floor as she still held onto her head, writhing in agony beneath the console. It was a telepathic assault. She'd felt it before…just before she watched her mother and Aaron change into the Master. She growled in pain, her nails digging into her scalp before screaming, the pain consuming her before her world went dark.
Meanwhile...
The Doctor paced next to Amelia's high chair where the baby sat, watching him and chewing on the cheerios he had given her as he called Joyce on the home phone.
"Hello?"
"Joyce, I need you to watch Amelia," he instantly replied, still pacing.
"Where's Olivia?" Joyce asked, but he could hear her shuffling to finish up whatever she was doing to get across the street. He swallowed, looking to Amelia as she grinned up at him, truly unaware of what was or could be happening to her mother.
"I'll explain everything when you get here," he promised. "But I need somebody here for Amelia."
"I'm on my way," she replied before they both hung up and he sighed as he sat in the chair in front of Amelia's high chair and he looked back at his daughter, reaching up to play with one of her tiny hands.
"No TARDIS, no Sonic…and I have no bloody clue how to get our mum back," he murmured as Amelia's fingers flexed around one of his fingers. "Granny Joyce is coming to take care of you, my little Amelia. You don't give her any trouble. I've got work to do."
"Doctor?" Joyce called from the front door and he stood up, his finger slipping from Amelia's grip as he turned toward Joyce when she entered. "What's going on?"
The Doctor met her halfway to Amelia's spot and held her gaze as he whispered, "Olivia went to the TARDIS and the TARDIS decided to take her on a little trip."
"What?!" Joyce hissed, her eyes wide with panic. "Where?! Why?!"
"I have no idea," he confessed, placing his hands on her shoulders to try calming her. "I've got to work this out, and I need you to take care of Amelia while I do. I promise, Joyce, I'll sort this and get her back. You know I will."
Joyce bit her lower lip before nodding and he pulled her in for a hug, sensing she needed it. When he released her she moved toward her granddaughter with a smile on her face to hide her worry as the Doctor raced outside to stare down at the spot where the TARDIS had been, wondering how he was going to find out where the TARDIS took Olivia. He started pacing next to the spot, running a hand through his hair before clutching the curls with both hands in frustration.
"Why did it take off?" he grumbled to himself, still pacing. "The TARDIS wouldn't take off like that, unless…"
He froze and stared wide eyes filled with realization ahead before racing back into the house, making Joyce frown at him as he ran past the kitchen where she was sitting with Amelia, but she said nothing. He ran out the front door then across the street to Joyce's home where he thankfully found the front door unlocked and he bounded up the stairs leading to the bedrooms, stopping at Olivia's bedroom door.
The Doctor pushed the door open to find the Crack glowing on the wall of her room, but something was different. The Crack's glow was fading in and out, and there was a faint sound coming from it, making him step toward it, slowly with a frown of wonder over his brow. He knelt next to the Crack to try getting a better idea of what the sound was, knowing it had to have been a clue as to why the TARDIS took off with his wife inside. He closed his eyes to focus on the muddle of sound before it came in, loud and clear, and it made his eyes shoot wide in terror as he recognized the sound.
A four beat rhythm.
"No," he breathed, sitting back on the floor and staring at the crack in absolute terror and confusion. "It can't be."
His mind reeled for a moment before he focused on Olivia once more and buried his hands in his hair again, growling in frustration. No Sonic. He had no way of scanning anything that might help him find out what was going on. Suddenly he recalled one of Olivia's Christmas gifts she'd gotten and looked around the room to see if she'd left it here. He shot to his feet and threw the trunk at the bottom of her bed open to rummage through it, grinning when he found what he was looking for. The handheld scanner Sarah Jane had given her.
He rushed toward the Crack again, working the scanner as he did, then ran it over the wall, being careful not to get too close to it, the rhythmic beat still sounding from it and making him even more nervous. Once he was finished he scrambled out of the room and back across the street to race through the house and back outside to the backyard.
"What are you doing?" Joyce frowned as she rocked Amelia, the baby giggling and laughing in her grandmother's arms.
"Something clever," he replied, scanning the spot where the TARDIS had been sitting. "Don't go in Olivia's room when you go home, Joyce."
"Again?" she questioned, stepping outside. "Please, tell me Olivia will be alright."
He stopped and turned to Joyce who looked as worried as she always did when it came to her daughter, and with good reason. Sighing, he made his way back to Joyce and Amelia, pressing a kiss to his mother-in-law's hairline then a kiss to his daughter's cheek before looking Joyce in the eye.
"Your daughter is going to be perfectly fine. I'll see to it."
Amelia gave a little fussing noise as Joyce nodded, tears of worry in her eyes as the baby raised her arms toward the Doctor, wanting him to hold her. His hearts clenched so hard he could barely breathe before he took Amelia with one arm, the scanner in his other hand then looked to Joyce.
"She'll need a bath before her nap," he reported, and Joyce nodded before heading inside the house again to get everything ready, the Doctor turning back to the spot where the TARDIS had been to scan it. "Right, little Amelia, don't you worry. We'll have mummy back in a jiff. Hopefully before bedtime tonight, yes?"
Amelia made a small, high-pitched baby sound before lifting her little hand and hitting the air…only to jump when she actually hit something. The Doctor's head shot up to look at his daughter as she kept hitting the spot while she laughed, then looked to the spot itself. He dropped the scanner to hold out a hand and touch the air in front of him, feeling familiar wood beneath his hand.
"As your mother would say: 'What…the…hell?'" he murmured, looking over the invisible TARDIS, never taking his hand off of the wood and Amelia kept hitting it. "Alright, well…this is new. Let's see if we can get in, eh?"
His hand ran down the door, feeling at the wood for the handle until his fingers curled around it and he tried opening it, but the door wouldn't budge. He growled in frustration as he still tried the door a moment before releasing the handle and shoving his hand into his pocket, Amelia laughing the entire time.
"Amelia, your mother is going to be so cross with you laughing at a time like this," he muttered, finding his key and feeling for the lock before trying to open the door again, but it still wouldn't open. "Blast!"
He started pounding on the door, silencing Amelia as she stared wide eyes ahead at nothing in particular in surprise.
"Olivia!" he shouted. "If you can hear me, open the door! Olivia?!"
When no response came, and the door didn't open, he sighed, leaning his forehead against the invisible wood before turning and sliding down the door, still holding onto Amelia as he sat.
"Invisible TARDIS, no Sonic, no way in, and your mother is likely unconscious in there or doing who knows what," he sighed before looking to the scanner he'd dropped and frowning at the readings on it. He lifted the thing as Amelia wrapped her little arms around his neck, sensing his mood and trying to comfort him as he read the screen. "That can't be right. How can it be there and here? That's not…possible."
"Doctor?" Joyce called from the doorway, making him look to her with wide eyes as she frowned at him in wonder. "What's not possible?"
The Doctor stood and looked to the TARDIS as he hugged Amelia close and still held the scanner before turning back to Joyce who was still frowning at him.
"The readings on the scanner say that the TARDIS is here," he explained.
"Where?!" Joyce questioned, grinning as she thought her daughter was back home and safe.
"There," he replied, gesturing behind him before looking to the scanner again. "But the readings on this say…it's here and in a…parallel universe."
"Parallel universe?" Joyce frowned back at him. "Olivia told me that was impossible. That you couldn't travel from one parallel universe to another, not with the TARDIS, anyway."
"Technically, you can't."
"Technically?"
"I've done it once before, and others found ways to do it, but no one else I knew in this universe had achieved it…until now."
"So…if the TARDIS is in two places at once, does that mean…Olivia is too?"
"The TARDIS is physically here, but its image is in the parallel world," he continued, looking over the readings. "Which means Olivia's physical body is here…but her mind would be with the TARDIS' image." He growled and looked back at the invisible TARDIS, adding, "But I can't get into the TARDIS to say for sure or try to fix it."
"Then…what do we do?" Joyce breathed, making the Doctor swallow before looking back at her.
"One thing at a time," he replied, hugging Amelia close. "I have to get into the TARDIS."
Olivia gasped as her eyes shot open and she tried to remember where she was.
Her bedroom.
She sighed and rubbed her face, trying to remember what day it was and she grinned, staring up at the ceiling.
Her eighteenth birthday.
She frowned in thought, trying to recall the dream she had just had. It had been so wonderful and fantastic. Having adventures through time and space, meeting an extraordinary man and marrying him. She was so happy. She hoped her future was just as exciting and wonderful.
Now, eighteen year old Olivia sat up and swept the covers off to stand and start her morning routine before heading down to breakfast, then the mall. Her graduation was in a few days, prom had been a blast with her best friend, Aaron Marcus, and her girlfriend, Heather was coming over to put the party together while Aaron treated her to a shopping spree. She was so happy her birthday had fallen on a Saturday. She rushed downstairs and into the kitchen where her mother, Joyce, stood at the stove.
"Morning!" Olivia grinned, coming up next to Joyce to kiss her cheek.
"Morning, birthday girl!" Joyce grinned back as Olivia stepped toward the fridge to pull out the gallon of milk. "Ready for a shopping spree?"
"More than ready," Olivia grinned back, grabbing a glass and pouring milk into it. "I need a dress for graduation…and some new shoes."
"Aaron's taking you?" Joyce reported, flipping something in the pan, making Olivia snicker as she sat at the kitchen table with her milk.
"Yeah, and I know his MO," she smirked. "Follow me around the mall to see what I react the most to then buy it for me as my birthday gift."
"At least he gets what you like," Joyce replied.
"What are you making?" Olivia wondered.
"One of my friends gave me this recipe for banana pancakes," Joyce replied, flipping another in the air and catching it with the pan again.
Olivia frowned in wonder before gritting her teeth in pain when a sharp headache sliced through her brain, making her lift a hand to her temple to try relieving it.
"Olivia? What's the matter?" Joyce called, making Olivia look up at her with a slight frown and nod.
"I'm alright," Olivia nodded, her headache gone as quickly as it had arrived. "Pancakes sound great."
"Olivia Felton!"
"Aaron Marcus!" she called back as the red-head sauntered into the kitchen, having let himself in. He stepped toward her and pressed a kiss to her head.
"Happy birthday, gorgeous," he smirked.
"Thanks," she grinned back.
"Hello! Aaron! You gonna help me with this box?!"
Olivia frowned in wonder before looking over to see Heather, her auburn curls a mess as she lugged a box into the kitchen.
"Sorry, babe," Aaron called, taking the box from her and setting it on the table.
"Babe?" Olivia echoed, making the couple look to her with frowns each. "I thought you two broke up."
"No," Aaron scoffed as Joyce turned to frown at her as well. "Geez, for practically being my sister you miss a lot."
He leaned over to tousle her hair as Heather went to the box and opened it, pulling out purple decorations.
"Now, don't you worry about a thing," she grinned. "I'll take care of everything. And don't worry about Stephanie. I made sure she's not coming, no matter how much she begs."
"You won't be lonely without her?" Olivia smirked, taking a sip of her milk, and Heather frowned at her in utter confusion, making Olivia frown at her again. "What?"
"Stephanie and I don't talk at all, you know that," Heather reported. "What's gotten into you? Early onset Alzheimer's?"
Olivia frowned in wonder as Aaron helped Joyce prepare plates of breakfast for all of them.
"I could've sworn…" she whispered, but became distracted when Joyce set her plate of pancakes in front of her.
"Eat up! Can't be starved while shopping," Joyce grinned. "Can't have a grumpy birthday girl."
The Mall...
Olivia stared blankly at the dress in front of her, running her fingers over the fabric, distractedly. She wasn't really seeing the dress, even though it really was gorgeous, but her mind was wandering. She couldn't figure out why she thought so differently of her friends. She had been so sure Aaron was gay with a boyfriend named Dax who she had yet to meet but was assured he was a great guy. And she had also been sure Heather and Stephanie spoke and it pissed Olivia off to no end.
"Like it?"
She jumped and looked to Aaron as he stood next to her then back at the dress, now seeing it and smiling.
"It's nice, but…nah," she shrugged before stepping away from it and out of the small store to scour the mall, Aaron trailing behind her.
"You've been thinking," he sang into her ear as they strolled amongst the shoppers and she frowned at him. "You always go quiet when you're thinking."
"I can't believe I forgot that you and Heather were still together," she muttered.
"Oh, stop beating yourself up!" Aaron grinned, slinging an arm over her shoulders. "I've forgiven you. Now, find a gift for me to give to you for your birthday."
"I knew you hadn't gotten me anything yet!" she laughed as they still strolled.
"Liv!"
They both turned around at the sound of the British accented voice, both frowning in wonder at the man that ran toward them. He was tall and slim with wild brown hair, brown eyes and cheeks decorated with freckles wearing a blue suit with a burgundy tie and a long brown coat, red Converse on his feet as he ran toward them.
"Who the hell is that?" Aaron frowned in wonder as the man raced toward them, looking desperate and panicked.
"W-Wha—? Hey!" Olivia snapped, frowning at him when he stopped and grabbed her arms, staring into her eyes.
"Let her go!" Aaron snapped, trying to pull the man back but he held Olivia fast.
"Olivia, you have to pay attention," he urged, making her frown in absolute confusion. "Pay attention!"
"Pay attention…to what?" she frowned as Aaron called a security guard over.
He didn't respond as his hands finally left her when he was dragged away by the security guard, but they kept their gazes locked before Aaron pulled her attention away.
"You ok?" he hoped, pulling her gently to face him and she looked to him with wide, jade eyes before registering his question and nodding. "Foreigners, huh?"
"Yeah," she muttered before he said something about getting a snack and pulled her by the hand toward the food court.
Where have I seen that man before? she wondered.
Felton Home...
"I can't believe that guy just came outta nowhere and assaulted you!" Heather gasped as she and Olivia stood in the back yard with all the birthday guests, some of which Olivia wasn't even sure she knew.
"Well, I wouldn't exactly call it an assault," Olivia replied, staring into her glass of punch. "But it was…weird."
"Weird?" Heather frowned in wonder. "What do you mean?"
Olivia thought for a moment before finally shaking her head and smiling, "Nothing. So what's planned for this shindig? Games?"
"Games are so last year," Heather grinned. "Aaron's gonna DJ once he's set up. Get ready to party hard!"
Olivia laughed as Heather stepped away to check on Aaron's progress, but her smile fell when she had a feeling like she was being watched. She also felt like something was missing. Someone else should've been there. Someone important.
"Excuse me."
She jumped and spun around, her punch splashing from her glass and onto the shirt of the man that called out to her.
"Oh, my god! I'm so sorry!" Olivia gasped, only seeing the red stain on the white shirt before looking for something to clean up the mess.
"It's alright," he chuckled, and she finally looked up at him to see a handsome young man, her age with brown, close cut hair and brown eyes. "Only a shirt."
"Come inside, my mom can wash it for you," she insisted. "I have a few shirts of my friend's you can borrow."
"You're very kind, Olivia," he nodded, making her frown up at him in wonder.
"Sorry, but…I don't know our name," she confessed.
"Oh, my name's Harry," he grinned, holding a hand out to her. "Harry Saxon."
"Nice meeting you," Olivia nodded, shaking his hand then nodding toward the house. "Better get you cleaned up."
She turned to lead him toward the house, fighting the urge to clutch at her head when another headache sliced through her brain, along with a faint four beat rhythm she must've heard somewhere, but couldn't remember where. Once inside Olivia left the washing of his shirt to her mother while she went to get one of Aaron's shirts he often accidentally left when he stayed over. She stepped into her room, but stopped when she noticed something on her wall.
The crack was curved and ragged, and somehow…looked familiar. She cringed when she felt a stab of pain in her head again before shaking it off and searching her room for a shirt. Finding a black t-shirt she hurried back downstairs to find Harry in the living room, shirtless. She blushed and swallowed as she slowly approached and he turned to her when he heard her footsteps. He stood with a smile and took the shirt when she handed it to him, still blushing.
"Thanks, doll," he smirked, pulling the shirt on over his head just as music caught their ears. "How about, as an apology, I get to dance with you for a while, huh?"
"Um…" she hummed as her heart raced and she finally nodded, "Yeah. Sure."
Harry took her hand and pulled her out of the living room and back to the kitchen to head outside where everyone was dancing. Olivia frowned when she felt a sudden sense of guilt, as if she were betraying a significant other. But she didn't have a boyfriend, or even a crush. However, as she danced with Harry, she felt like she was holding back, and she still felt like she was being watched.
That Night...
Olivia bid the last of her guests goodnight from her front door as they left, grinning like mad at the day she'd had, despite the confusion and the, as Heather put it, 'assault' at the mall. She stood on her porch and stared up at the stars, unable to fathom the beauty of it. She found herself thinking about that dream she'd had that night about traveling through those stars she was staring at. She had seen so many crazy things in that dream that it could only be her imagination.
"Beautiful, isn't it?"
She jumped, her heart skipping as Harry suddenly stood next to her and she looked to him with wide eyes before matching his smile at her.
"It is," she agreed as they turned back to the look at the sky. "Makes me wanna get a closer look."
"Maybe you will," Harry smiled, making her frown back at him as he grinned down at her. "Thanks for washing my shirt, and the dance. Party was great."
"Yeah, it was nice meeting you," she smiled.
"See you at graduation," he smirked, leaning over to press a kiss to her cheek then heading down the stairs as Olivia stared at him in disbelief. He turned to wave at her, still smiling, charmingly, before sauntering down the street.
"Ooh, who was that?" Aaron asked, stepping up next to her and catching her attention as he slung his arm around her neck. "And how dare he kiss you without my permission?"
"Harry Saxon," Olivia reported. "Apparently he's in my physics class, but I've never seen him. I spilled punch on his shirt and mom had to wash it."
"That's one way to meet a guy," he chuckled. "You like him?"
"He's charming," she shrugged then smirked, "Don't start picturing me in a wedding dress just yet."
"Wouldn't dream of it," he chuckled. "But I have to admit…he doesn't seem like your type. Thought you went for the tall lanky type. He's not that lanky…or tall."
"None of us are done growing up yet, dork," she smirked, shoving him away by the face and he laughed. "You taking Heather home?"
"Yeah," he sighed, pressing a kiss to her temple. "See ya later."
"Be safe," she called as Heather came out and hugged Olivia tightly before pulling on Aaron's arm to lead him toward his car.
She watched them drive off before looking back at the sky to stare at the stars. She frowned when she still felt like she was being watched again. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up before she finally looked ahead and across the street to see a silhouette that she wasn't sure she recognized or not.
The man from the mall.
"Olivia!" Joyce called from within the house, making her jump and look back at the open door. "You coming in?"
"In a minute!" Olivia called back. "Don't wait up!"
She turned back to stare at the figure across the street who hadn't moved. Chewing on her lower lip, she was sure this would be a bad idea but she couldn't keep her curiosity at bay. This man obviously knew her, even if she didn't know him. She glanced around the dark street before heading toward him, her head held high and when she stepped up to him, she couldn't help but wonder why he was smirking at her.
"Who are you?" she instantly questioned.
"You're not paying attention, Liv," he replied, making her frown at him in confusion. "You have to pay attention."
"To what?" she asked.
"Gravity," he replied, making her frown deepen, but he didn't explain as he resumed. "Tomorrow won't be the day you expect it to be, and when you see me again, I won't look like this."
"Look, I'm not Alice and you don't look like a white rabbit, or the Mad Hatter," she shot back, and he smirked again with a small scoff. "Would you quit talking in riddles and tell me what I'm supposed to be paying attention to and who you are?"
"You have to work it out yourself, Liv."
"And why do you keep calling me that?"
"Because it's your name," he smirked, making her arch a brow at him and he laughed before turning to head down the street, but he stopped and turned back to her again. "Bit of advice, darling: Stay away from Harry Saxon."
"Don't give me advice on my love life, stranger!" she shot back as he sauntered away, and his laughter echoed after him as she stomped toward her house again. She stopped at her front door when a familiar sound caught her ear, but she didn't turn to look as she frowned in thought, then whispered, "Doctor. That's…who he is…I think. The Doctor."
A/N: Ten cameo! because I just couldn't resist. now...are you paying attention? (lol) reviews?
