Chapter 19: Nineteen Computers
The Doctor paced in front of the invisible TARDIS, trying to figure out how he could get in. He'd been out there for what felt like hours. Joyce had come out to try to help but when he didn't even notice her watching him, she went back into the house to look after Amelia. He realized he would have to bring the TARDIS image back before he could get in…but he wasn't even sure how to
"There must be a way for me to get in," he growled, ruffling his hair. "Think, think, think! Of all the things she could do, taking off to a parallel universe is, by far, the worst! And taking my TARDIS and Sonic with her! I knew she was sentimental but—!"
He cut himself off, freezing in his spot as he suddenly burst into a grin.
"Sentimental! Of course!"
He shot toward the house and down the hall to the master bedroom to start rummaging through every drawer he could get into. Joyce rushed in when she heard him hurry in, grunting and mumbled as he flung things across the room.
"Doctor?" she frowned as she watched clothes and other things fly into the air then land to the floor around him. "What are you doing?"
"Where is it?!" he replied, still searching the room, making her frown in wonder.
"Where's what?" she asked back, still watching him.
"Her Sonic!" he replied, moving to Olivia's side of the bed to rummage through her nightstand. "She always keeps her old ones! She's sentimental! Where is it?!"
"I…I don't know," Joyce admitted, then paused in thought. "If she doesn't have any of them here, they'd probably be in her Treasure Chest back at my house."
"Go look," he ordered her, still rummaging. "I'll take care of Amelia. Hurry!"
Joyce rushed back out to do as he told her as he stood tall again, ruffling his hair with one hand and sighing heavily in thought.
"She has to have one somewhere," he whispered to himself, glancing around before kneeling next to the bed and shoving his hands beneath the mattress, thinking she might have hidden one there. He frowned in wonder when his fingers brushed against something and he grabbed it to pull it out to examine it. He frowned at the thing and murmured, "Stun Gun."
He bit on his lower lip in thought, the wheels in his head turning before he stepped into the hallway and toward Amelia's room to check on her in her crib. She slept soundly, making him smile slightly before heading back down the hall, toward the kitchen, grabbing the baby monitor on his way out to the backyard again. He took in a breath and hoped to whatever powers that could have been that this would work.
The Doctor swallowed then lifted the stun gun, whispering, "Sorry."
He pressed the stun gun to the approximate spot where the lock was and pulled the trigger. The bolts of static ran out from the barrel of the stun gun along the outline of the invisible TARDIS. He cringed as he watched the static run along what seemed like air, but his cringe turned to wide-eyed shock as the familiar blue of the TARDIS began bleeding out from where the barrel touched the lock.
"Yes!" he cheered through a grin, but it was an early celebration when the color began fading again. "No!"
He pulled the stun gun back to look at the battery power display. It was running on empty. He growled in frustration before racing back into the house, just as Amelia's cries came through the baby monitor. The cries brought him out of his frustration and he set both the monitor and the stun gun down on the counter to make his way toward her room.
"Hello, my love," he crooned, leaning into Amelia's crib to lift her up and hold her close, her cries fading as he rocked her in his arms. He had to be calm for her. He wasn't about to take out this latest situation on his innocent daughter. "Have a nice nap? Let's get some food in you, eh?"
He stepped out of the room and into the hall where he met Joyce with something familiar in her hand.
"Oh, look, granny Joyce found mummy's Sonic," he grinned, passing Joyce and plucking the thing from her hands as she watched him. "Say thank you, granny." He turned to face the now sniffling but otherwise quiet Amelia toward Joyce and took one of her tiny hands to wave it at Joyce, imitating a small voice as he called, "Thanks you, granny."
"Is that Olivia's Stun Gun?" Joyce wondered, pointing to it on the counter as he sat Amelia in in her high chair, strapping her in.
"Yeah," he replied, stepping toward it. "Can you feed her?"
"Of course," Joyce nodded, instantly starting to bustle around the kitchen as the Doctor lifted the Stun Gun to use the Sonic Screwdriver on it. She glanced at him as he worked on the thing while she fed her granddaughter then finally asked, "What are you doing with it?"
"I thought maybe the electricity from the Stun Gun would somehow reboot the TARDIS image, like a defibrillator reboots a heart," he explained, still working. "It started working but I need more power and I'm not sure even boosting this thing with the Sonic is going to help, but I have to try."
"Power?" Joyce frowned in thought before recalling, "There's a generator in the basement. Do you think you can use it?"
The Doctor stared at her with wide eyes before stepping toward her and planting a kiss to her head, grinning, "Now I see why Olivia's so quick on her feet. I'll be across the street if you need me."
"I bought an extra-long extension cord that'll reach as far as your backyard!" she called to him as he ran toward the front door.
"Thank you, you brilliant woman!" he called back, making Joyce smile before turning back to Amelia to feed her.
"Don't worry, Little Amy," she smiled, but her own worry glazed over her green eyes. "Your daddy is gonna bring your mommy home. I know he will."
Olivia's eyes fluttered open to be met with a new, but familiar setting. She frowned as she tried to recall where she was.
Her flat in Cardiff.
Then she recalled she had to go to work. What did she do again? She was surprised she couldn't remember, but a moment later, it came to her.
She was a computer tech for Harkness Incorporated, originating in South Wales.
She always felt drawn to Cardiff, and when she graduated college, she was instantly picked up by the company's US branch. Then when they offered her a relocation to Cardiff, at twenty-two, she jumped at the chance. No one could ever understand what drew her there, not even herself.
And something about Jack Harkness, the son of the CEO of Harkness Inc., drew her in as well. She couldn't explain what, or why, but it was almost like she knew him so well, even though she'd never met him. It was another reason she wanted to go to Cardiff…that was where Jack chose to live.
Her mobile rang, making her frown in wonder as she sat up in bed and reached for it. Looking at the caller ID, she had to wait for a moment for her mind to catch up before recalling who 'Harry' was.
"Hey, Harry," she smiled as she answered.
"Morning, Sunshine," he replied, and she could hear his smile on the other end of the line. "Morning for you, anyway. How's Cardiff?"
"Rainy," she sighed, lying back again. "And gloomy."
"Can't wait to get back to Cali?" Harry smirked.
"Almost," she smirked back. "Other than the rain, I kinda like it here."
"Good, because I was planning to visit you over there, soon," he confessed.
"Really?" she grinned, sitting up again. "How soon?"
"Pretty soon."
The doorbell sounded, making her frown in wonder at the hall. She wasn't expecting anyone, especially not at seven in the morning.
"Hang on a sec," she told Harry before looking down at herself to be sure her pajamas were decent as she made her way to the door. When she opened the door enough to peek out, her eyes shot wide and she threw it open with a grin and a squeal. "Harry!"
He laughed as she threw herself at him, both hanging up their phones as he wrapped his arms around her to lift her off her feet and carry her back into her flat. He kicked the door shut, his huge duffle bag strapped to his back before he set her down and she pulled back enough to plant her lips to his.
"You sly thing!" she giggled, hitting his chest, lightly. "Too bad you came on a workday. We could've spent all day together."
"I'll take you out for drinks and dinner tonight," he smiled. "It's Friday, right? We'll start the weekend off early."
"Is it Friday?" she frowned in wonder. "I thought it was Monday."
"Getting your days mixed up again?" he chuckled, pressing a kiss to her temple. "You get ready. I'll make myself at home."
Olivia still frowned in wonder at why her days were a mix as Harry made his way to the sofa to dump his duffle on it.
"I think…we'll just have take away tonight," she requested, distractedly. "I'm in the mood for Chinese."
"Get going!" he chuckled, coming up behind her to grip her arms and turn her toward her bedroom. "You're gonna be late!"
Harkness Inc.…
"Ianto, you're worse than Gwen!" Olivia sighed as she lay on her back, under the desk of a young man with auburn hair and light eyes, trying to fix his computer while he sat in his chair a foot or so away. "You should really just stick to coffee."
"Very funny, Olivia," Ianto smirked. "You sound like Owen, when he nearly kills his own computer by spilling anything he drinks on it!"
"Yeah, you have a point," she chuckled, shimmying out from under the desk and shooting up to kneel in front of it. "I scolded him, too, don't worry. You're all terrible. At least Tashiko has respect for the equipment. That should do it."
The computer came back on as Ianto shuffled next to her in his chair, staring on as she worked on the machine, and brought up everything he'd been working on before the thing broke down.
"You're a lifesaver, Olivia," he sighed in relief. "I thought I lost Jack's schedule for the entire year!"
"Supertech to the rescue, huh?" Olivia smirked. "Nineteen computers in this office and it has to be yours that breaks down, every Friday. If you're trying to get my attention just say so, Ianto."
"Oi, you two, stop flirtin' over there!" a young woman with dark hair, light eyes and fair skin smiled, showing off the adorable gap in her two front teeth as she approached with two cups of coffee. "Jack's in today and he'd have something to say about that."
"Jack's here today?!" Olivia grinned as Gwen sipped at one cup, handing the other to Ianto.
"You have a crush on him, too?" Gwen smirked with a wink as she made her way to her desk.
"Not…exactly," Olivia replied, hesitantly as she shrank back. "Well…no, I just—I don't know."
"You can admit it," Ianto shrugged, taking a sip of his coffee before making a face and setting it aside, and Olivia snickered. "Everybody does."
"It's really nothing like that," she insisted.
"Nothing like what?"
Olivia shot to her feet as a well dressed man walked into the room. He had trendy brown hair, blue eyes, a strong jaw and a charming smile over his kissable lips to show off perfect teeth, a coffee in one huge hand, and a briefcase in the other as he sauntered toward the door on the other side of the room.
He is way more handsome than I thought he'd be, she thought to herself, swallowing hard as his eyes remained on her when he stopped at the door to his office.
"What's your name?" he asked, still smiling.
"Olivia Felton," she blurted, fidgeting on her feet.
"She's our computer tech," Gwen announced as Ianto clicked something on his computer, sending the printer into action.
"Ianto break his computer again?" Jack smirked, juggling his case and coffee to find the key to his office as Ianto stood with some papers in his hand. He took Jack's coffee to hold onto it while Jack found the key to his office.
"Your schedule for today and tomorrow," Ianto explained, holding the papers to him. "Also that contract for Doctor Jones you wanted."
"Perfect," Jack smirked, opening the door and taking the papers, along with his coffee. "Thanks, Ianto. Miss Felton, I was having problems with my computer yesterday. Would you mind helping me out?"
"Uh…Sure!" Olivia chirped before grabbing her equipment bag and heading for the door as he held it open for her. She made her way toward the desk where his computer sat, asking, "So, what's the problem with this thing, Mr. Harkness?"
"Mr. Harkness is my father," he smirked, shutting the door. "Call me Jack."
Dinner...
"Just like that!" Olivia explained, excitedly to Harry as they sat at the table in her flat over some Chinese take away. "It was amazing! I never thought I'd get to meet him! He's a total flirt, but I saw right through that. Are you even listening?"
Harry looked up from picking at his food with wide eyes as she frowned back at him before he blurted, "Huh?"
"I knew you weren't paying attention," she sighed, slouching in her chair.
"I was," he insisted. "He's a flirt. I'm sorry, babe, I'm just a bit distracted."
"Why? What happened?" she wondered, concern written over her brow and in her eyes as he looked to her again.
"Nothing's happened…yet," he murmured, vaguely, making her frown deepen.
"Yet?" she asked back, and he sighed, heavily.
"No getting around it I suppose," he muttered.
"No getting around what?" she questioned as he shoved a hand into his pocket, shifting in his seat. "Harry, what are you—?"
She cut herself off, her eyes shooting wide when he slid off his seat to take a knee, holding up a little box that had a simple gold band with a diamond embedded in it inside. Her jade eyes met his brown ones, her mouth agape as he swallowed hard, unmoving and keeping her gaze.
"What…the…hell?" she breathed.
"Olivia, we've been together for three years now," Harry began. "You can't tell me you didn't see this coming."
"I…I-I…uh…" she sputtered, her heart thumping in her chest as she only stared down at him for a moment. "Harry…are you sure about this?"
"Of course I am," he frowned. "Isn't this what you wanted?"
Was it? she wondered as well. She couldn't remember. She recalled the dream she'd had before her eighteenth birthday about a fantastic adventure and a madman in a blue box. Harry was nice, but he was nothing like the man in her dream. She scolded herself for wanting a dream so badly, when she knew full well it was impossible.
"Olivia?" Harry called, gently, snapping her back to the situation at hand. "Will you marry me?"
She stared at him before an instant headache flared and she winced, making him frown, but he watched her closely and said nothing. A four beat rhythm sounded in her head, making her frown as well and glance around, wondering where it was coming from, her head still throbbing.
"Do you hear that?" she asked.
"Hear what?" he wondered.
"It sounds like…drums," she replied, and Harry gave a knowing smirk that she missed when it disappeared as she looked back at him.
"Are you stalling?" he teased, making her look back at him with huge eyes.
Yes, she thought.
"N-No," she lied before looking back at the ring he was offering.
That ring. So strange but so familiar.
Another headache flared, worse than before, making her wince again and clutch at her head with both hands in pain, the four beat rhythm sounding louder.
"Olivia?" Harry called, grabbing her arms to keep her from falling off the chair. "What's wrong?"
"Y-Yes," she strained under the pain and it suddenly stopped just as quickly as it had assaulted her. She looked to Harry's shocked expression and realized what she'd said. "Yes…I'll marry you."
Harry burst into a grin and pulled her toward him for a tight hug, then a passionate kiss…that she was hesitant to return.
Why did I say that? she wondered in disbelief.
Midnight...
Olivia stared, unseeing eyes at the telly with some mind-numbing program on it.
What had she done?
Liv…
She didn't want to marry him.
Liv…
She wanted that man that man from her dream.
Liv…
That madman in the blue box.
"TARDIS," she muttered to herself. "That box is called the TARDIS."
"Liv!"
She jumped as she looked to the telly screen and gasped at the face on it staring back at her. He had brown hair in a floppy comb over, green eyes and an absurd chin, a bowtie under it.
"Finally!" he sighed. "I've been calling you!"
She frowned before glancing to her bedroom where Harry was sleeping then looked back to the screen. She rubbed her eyes before frowning at the screen again, but he was still there.
"D-Doctor?" she tried.
"Now you're gettin' it, Liv," he smiled wide before it instantly fell and he glared at her. "But you're not paying enough attention."
"Enough attention to gravity?" she frowned, sitting back and folding her arms, indignantly. "I'm not clumsy."
"How would you know?" he shot back, making her frown in confusion. "I only told you that yesterday."
"That was years ago!" she argued.
"It was yesterday, Liv. See? Not paying enough attention. And didn't I tell you to stay away from Harry Saxon?"
"I don't see how my love life is any of your business."
"If you were paying attention, you would."
"Quit with the riddles!"
"Only when you start paying attention. You're starting to get it, but you're not quite there yet. Use that brain of yours! You know something's not right, figure it out!"
"There's nothing to figure out! This is my life! Leave me alone!"
She grabbed the remote and switched the telly off before crossing her arms in front of her and smirked in triumph. But it was short-lived. The screen switched itself back on to reveal the Doctor with a huge, triumphant grin of his own.
"How are you doing that?!" Olivia hissed, glaring at him when he gave a wink.
"Wouldn't you like to know? Honestly, Liv, you need to really start paying attention. And if you don't won't to marry him, then don't. I wouldn't, personally."
"Well, you're not me, so stop giving me advice on situations you know absolutely nothing about."
"I know you, Olivia Lydia Felton."
She gaped at the screen before sitting forward to breathe in disbelief, "Nobody knows my muddle name. Not even Harry!"
"Told you…I know you," he smirked. "I'll see you at the wedding, Liv."
"Nobody calls me that, and you aren't invited!"
"I call you that…Liv."
A/N: I hope this makes sense a little...at least as much sense as Doctor Who usually makes. reviews?
