"Mummy, can't I have some pudding now?" asked Luna one night during suppertime.
"No, not until you've eaten your carrots," Pandora told her.
"But I don't like carrots, Mummy!" the three-year-old whined.
"Well, they're good for you, sweetie. They'll help you grow big and strong."
"I don't want to grow big and strong," Luna said stubbornly while crossing her arms.
"Come on, sweetheart," Pandora coaxed. "Just one bite? For Mummy?"
"No!"
"If you don't eat some carrots there won't be any pudding at all."
Reluctantly Luna took a small bite of carrot; satisfied, her mother gave her a little helping of pudding.
Later that night after Luna had been put to bed, Xenophilius and Pandora were discussing their plans for their upcoming anniversary.
"I've been thinking," Pandora said. "Every year so far we've been spending our anniversary at home. This year I'd like to do something different, something we've never done before."
"What did you have in mind?" Xeno asked.
"Well, we may not be able to afford to eat at a fancy restaurant, but there's a pretty good hamburger restaurant in London a friend of mine loves. We could try that."
"Yes, I suppose we could do that," her husband said.
"Then it's decided; we go out to dinner on Sunday and arrange for the Diggorys to watch Luna and Newt for a few hours." They started upstairs to their bedroom, but before they had reached the stairs, Luna came down carrying her stuffed Snorkack Hans.
"Luna, what are you doing out of bed?" her father asked.
The toddler held up Hans. "Hans wants a glass of water."
A couple of minutes later Luna was tucked back into bed with her water while still clutching Hans. "Goodnight, moonbeam," Xeno said as he exited the room.
On Sunday afternoon, Xeno walked to the garden where Pandora was tending to the Dirigible Plums to deliver some unwelcome news.
"I just talked to Amos Diggory through the Floo Network," he said sadly. "They can't babysit tonight because Cedric is sick and they don't want Luna to catch it too. So it looks as though we'll be spending this anniversary at home as usual."
"Oh no we won't," said a determined Pandora. "I said we're going out tonight, and that's what we're going to do. We'll just have to find someone else to babysit, that's all."
"Who?! No one other than the Diggorys has ever babysat our daughter before."
"That's not altogether true. In case you've forgotten, Bill Weasley helped Luna find her way home after you let her wander off by herself last year. Perhaps he can watch her while we're away."
A few minutes later Xenophilius' head was resting in the fireplace of the Burrow. "Molly," he said as the matriarch of the Weasley clan knelt down to his level, "I have a favor to ask you. You see, my wife and I will be going out to dinner tonight but we need someone to watch our daughter and her cat. Can you see if Bill is available to do it?"
Before Molly could answer, however, her almost-three-year-old daughter Ginny toddled into the room whining, "Mummy! Wonnie bwokeded my dolly!"
"I'll fix it later, dear. Xeno, give me a minute while I go fetch him." She came back a few minutes later with Bill, followed by Charlie.
"Meet me at my house in five minutes," Xeno instructed before pulling his head out of the fireplace.
"Now," said Xeno once Bill had Flooed into the Rook, "are you sure you can handle watching my daughter and her cat for a few hours?"
"Mr. Lovegood, I have a sister her age and we have a cat too. Of course I can - Charlie, what are you doing here?"
Charlie had just emerged from the fireplace. "I figured you could use some help watching Luna."
"I don't need any help!" Bill sighed. "Well, I guess since you're already here...oh, all right." And so Xeno began giving them their instructions.
"...here's Newt's cat food, he gets fed at precisely 6:30 PM," Xeno finished. "And this is where we're keeping tonight's pudding." He gestured to the top of the cupboard in the kitchen. "Make sure not to give any of it to Luna until after she finishes her supper. And finally, her bedtime is 7:30."
"Got it, Mr. Lovegood," said Bill; Charlie nodded in agreement.
When Xeno and Pandora had left, Bill turned to Luna, who was sitting on the rug playing with Twinkles, her stuffed unicorn. "So," the thirteen-year-old boy said with a grin, "we meet again, Luna."
The three-year-old gazed at him. "I remember you. I saw you in the woods once."
"Yeah. Anyway, what do you want to do first?"
"I wanna draw!"
As Bill, Charlie, and Luna were drawing, the boys looked over at the little girl's drawings. "Wow, those are good!" Charlie said in awe.
Luna beamed and held up one. "I'm giving this to Mummy and Daddy as their 'versary present."
"Well, it looks awesome," said Bill.
Luna then stared at the image on Charlie's shirt. "That's a dragon," she said.
"Er, yeah, it is," the eleven-year-old replied.
"You like dragons, don't you?"
"Yeah..."
"It's okay. I like dragons too. I like all kinds of animals."
They heard Newt meowing to be fed; while Charlie was feeding the cat, Luna wandered into the kitchen and looked longingly at the pudding that had been placed well out of her reach. If she could get some of it somehow...Oh, how she wished she could have some pudding before supper for once...
Meanwhile Bill was looking at his watch and realized it was just about suppertime. So he went down to the kitchen to make some sandwiches for everyone - and he found Luna sitting at the table shoving handfuls of chocolate, whipped cream, and strawberries into her mouth with an almost-empty pudding platter in front of her. The teenage boy just stood there in shock.
"Huh?! But - Wha - ? How did...?!" he stammered.
Luna let out a scream of mirth, pointing a chocolate-covered finger at Bill. "You sound like a Gibbermonger when you talk like that!" she giggled.
"How did you get that from all the way up there?!" Bill managed to utter, choosing to ignore the little girl's comment.
"I don't know. I was just wishing I could get some of it and all of a sudden it was in my hands."
The thirteen-year-old continued to stand there in shock. Unless he was mistaken, Luna had just used some accidental magic. Even Ron hadn't shown any signs of magic yet, and he was four!
"What's going on?" asked Charlie, who had just stepped into the kitchen.
"Luna here just somehow got that pudding from on top of the cupboard."
"Accidental magic?"
"Yep. Well, what's done is done. We may as well just have our supper."
After everyone had eaten and Luna had been bathed and dressed in her nightclothes, Bill asked Luna, "So what bedtime story do you want to hear?"
"Babbity Rabbity!" the toddler replied.
"All right, Babbity Rabbity it is," said Bill, and so he began...
Luna was fast asleep by the time Xeno and Pandora had returned home. "So how did it go?" asked Xeno.
"Not too bad," said Charlie.
"Except there was a bit of a problem," Bill added. "I know you said to make sure Luna didn't have any pudding until she finished her supper, but she somehow got it onto the kitchen table and ate it. She says she doesn't know how it happened."
Pandora and Xeno looked at each other. "I don't believe this," Xeno said softly.
"Mr. Lovegood, I'm really sorry."
"Our daughter performed her first accidental magic and we missed it?!" exclaimed Xeno.
"You can go home now, boys," said Pandora. After Bill and Charlie had returned to the Burrow, she went upstairs to Luna's bedroom.
"Luna?" she said softly. The little girl sat up and rubbed her eyes sleepily. "Hi, Mummy."
"Bill told me what happened with the pudding."
"I'm sorry, Mummy. Are you angry?"
Pandora hugged Luna tightly. "How can Mummy be angry with you when you did your first accidental magic? If anything, I'm just angry your daddy and I didn't get to see it for ourselves."
"Thank you, Mummy." Luna then got up and handed her mother the picture she'd drawn earlier. "I made this for you and Daddy for your 'versary."
"Oh, thank you, sweetie," said Pandora, kissing the little girl on the cheek. "Goodnight and sweet dreams."
"Goodnight, Mummy."
"What's this, Dora?" asked Xeno a while later when his wife handed him the drawing.
"It's an anniversary gift from Luna," she replied. "Isn't it lovely?"
They both looked at the drawing, which depicted the two of them riding on the back of a Crumple-Horned Snorkack as it romped through a field of flowers under a rainbow, while butterflies flew around it.
"Happy anniversary, Xeno."
"Happy anniversary, Dora." They shared a kiss before drifting off to sleep.
