"'Fire in the West Country Believed to Be the Work of Heliopaths'?" Pandora looked skeptically at the article her husband was showing her. "Are you sure about that?"
"Dora, there are plenty of eyewitnesses who claim that Heliopaths are the culprits," Xenophilius told her. Just then Luna came running down the stairs.
"Look what I made," she said proudly, holding up one of her father's old winter hats on which she had glued several Dirigible Plums. "I'm going to give this to Cedric for his birthday tomorrow."
"Are you sure he'll like it, sweetie?" her mother asked.
"Yes! It's pretty, isn't it, Daddy?"
Xenophilius was silent for a moment as the little girl stared expectantly at him. He knew how much Luna loved to make gifts for others, but he hadn't exactly counted on her using one of his hats. On the other hand, he didn't want to be unsupportive or hurt her feelings. Finally he said, "It looks good, moonbeam. I'm sure Cedric will love it."
"Luna, you crazy little girl!" chuckled Pandora as she attempted to dress her daughter for Cedric's birthday party the next afternoon; the four-year-old was squirming from excitement and giggling. When she was finally dressed, she was wearing a bright yellow dress with matching shoes. Just as she started to skip happily toward the fireplace to Floo over to Cedric's house, her mother grabbed her by the arm.
"Not so fast, young lady. Mummy has to comb your hair first." Luna squirmed harder than ever as Pandora tried to comb her blonde locks. "Luna, please stay still!"
At last they were ready to go. Pandora took a pinch of Floo powder and tossed it into the fireplace; she then held Luna by the hand as she said "The Diggory House!" and the two of them were on their way.
"Happy birthday, Cedric!" Luna said as she held his wrapped gift out to him.
"Thanks, Luna," the young boy said as he placed the gift onto the table.
"Have a good time, sweetheart," Pandora told her, kissing her on the cheek. "Mummy will be back later to take you home." Once Pandora had left, everyone gathered around the kitchen table where the birthday cake (double chocolate and roughly the shape and color of a Golden Snitch) was sitting, decorated with eight candles.
After everyone had sung the birthday song, Ophelia said, "Make a wish, dear." Cedric obediently did so before blowing out his candles.
"Happy birthday, dear Cedric, happy birthday to you!" sang Luna loudly, bouncing in her seat. Everyone laughed.
After everyone had eaten, it was time for Cedric to open his presents. "Open mine first!" Luna told him eagerly. The eight-year-old looked in bewilderment at the hat he was holding.
"What are those things all over it?" he asked, indicating the orange radish-like fruit. He was sure he'd seen it in the Lovegoods' garden when he'd visited the Rook, but he had never asked about it.
"They're Dibble Plums, silly!" the little girl replied; she hadn't mastered pronouncing "Dirigible" yet. "Mummy also uses them in her biscuits."
"Oooookay then," Cedric said slowly, a look of uncertainty on his face. "I'll be sure to wear it often." Once the birthday boy had opened the rest of his gifts, Amos called everyone to the back yard where he had left one last gift for his son.
"Wow, Dad!" exclaimed Cedric when he caught sight of the broomstick in front of him. "A Cleansweep Six! Thank you!"
"Well, my boy deserves nothing but the best," his father said with a grin.
"By the way," piped up Ophelia as everyone went back inside, "There's a carnival down in the village today. What do you say we all go this evening? Luna can come too." Amos nodded.
"I've never been to a Muggle carnival before," said Cedric thoughtfully. "Eh, why not? It could be fun."
"What's a carnival?" asked Luna curiously.
"It's a really fun place with lots of rides and games," Ophelia explained. "And they serve good food like ice cream and candyfloss."
"Oooooh! I wanna go!" the four-year-old said excitedly. When Pandora returned a few minutes later, Luna asked, "Mummy, can I go to the carnival with Cedric?"
"Sweetheart, we really need to get back home," her mother told her. "Daddy and Newt are waiting for us."
But Luna was not going to give in that easily. "I wanna go to the carnival! I wanna go to the carnival!" she shrieked, stamping her feet.
"I don't see any harm in letting the girl accompany us," Amos said. "We've already agreed she could come."
"Oh, I suppose so," sighed Pandora. "I'll come back later."
"Thank you, Mummy!" cried Luna, hugging her mother around the legs.
A half hour later the Diggorys and Luna were walking through the carnival, Ophelia carrying Luna on her hip; the little girl stared wide-eyed at all the sights.
"Hey, look!" shouted Cedric, pointing toward a game booth where people were shooting water into the mouths of moving mechanical clown models. "What d'you reckon, Luna? Shall we give it a go?" The girl nodded.
"Your father and I are going to get us some candyfloss," Ophelia said. "Keep an eye on Luna and stick together." The two adults walked off.
Luna ended up winning a small plastic water pistol, which she gave to Cedric. She then spotted a petting zoo nearby and ran at top speed toward it, Cedric hurrying to keep up. "Ooooh, look at all the animals!" she squealed, walking up to a bunny and petting it. Cedric went to pet a lamb.
After Amos and Ophelia had returned with snacks for everyone, they continued walking around. "Hey, look, Luna!" Cedric said, pointing. "A House of Mirrors! Let's go check it out!"
Luna giggled as she stood in front of a mirror that made her look taller. "I look like my mummy!" she cried.
"This one makes me look like a house-elf," said Cedric.
They returned home around 8:00, a sleeping Luna draped over Ophelia's shoulder, clutching a stuffed pony she had won at a miniature bowling game booth. When they got there, they found Pandora waiting for them; she gently took Luna from Ophelia's arms and they Flooed back to the Rook.
