Chapter 29: Twenty-nine Dresses
Olivia…
Was it the Doctor? She couldn't quite tell. The voice was calling to her in what sounded like a whisper.
"Olivia…"
It was a little louder now, and she was now aware of the splitting headache and the cold floor she was lying on…but she still couldn't tell if that was the Doctor's voice.
"Olivia! Wake up!"
Her eyes finally fluttered open at the call, making her frown against the light in the TARDIS before she lifted a hand to shade her eyes from the assault. She suddenly felt a pair of hands brace her when she attempted to sit up, rubbing her eyes to will the headache away.
"You alright, then? Nothing broken?"
"Yeah, I'm…fine…"
She trailed off and froze when she realized that voice, and those hands, did not belong to the Doctor. She lifted her gaze to the figure kneeling next to her to be met with an unfamiliar and very much older face. He was dressed in a black suit and waistcoat with a white, button-up shirt that had a ribbon-like tie in a bow around the collar and black boots on his feet, his huge blue eyes staring at her in concern from under a gray head of hair with wild eyebrows to match.
It took her a moment to take him in before she shouted in shock and back-peddled away from him until her back hit a wall and she shot her gaze around the room, trying to find the Doctor. It was then she realized she was in the control room of the TARDIS, but it looked very different, and it made her look back at the older man still kneeling in front of her and watching her carefully.
"What have you done to the TARDIS?!" she snapped, her anger overruling her shock and making him frown at her in confusion with those eyebrows.
"What?" he blurted, and it was then that she heard the distinct Scottish accent, but she ignored it as she finally shot to her feet and glared down at him.
"Where's the Doctor and what have you done to the TARDIS?!" she demanded again, and glared at him as he slowly stood then took a step toward her. She took a step back, pushing her back against the wall she'd backed into as he stopped an inch away from her, still staring down at her. He heart thumped in her chest in panic so hard that she could hear it in her ears, and then she remembered, "And one more thing! How did you know my name?!"
"Liv, it's me," he replied in a calm tone, making her eyes shoot wide in disbelief. "It's me. I'm the Doctor."
Olivia stared at him in absolute confusion. Something wasn't right. He wasn't explaining any further, and it was starting to frighten her. He was looking at her as if he hadn't seen her in years. If he was the Doctor he would've began rattling off with an explanation as to why he looked different…regeneration, possibly. But that led her to another question: Regeneration from what? Whatever that was that rendered them unconscious in the TARDIS would've killed her if it caused him to regenerate…unless he protected her.
Too many questions were running through her mind. So many that she couldn't even think of voicing even one of them. She was sure that was the shock of his answer to her questions.
"Olivia…" he smiled, slightly as he lifted a hand in an attempt to stroke her face—
"Liv!"
The sound of the familiar call from a familiar voice shocked her out of her trance and the Doctor in front of her yanked his hand back when she looked up to the stairs behind her where she heard hurried footsteps. She looked back at the Doctor in front of her and he took a few steps back just as her Doctor came racing down the stairs and spun around at the end of them to find her still in her spot leaning against the wall.
"Theta!" she grinned with a huge sigh of relief before shooting toward him and throwing her arms around him just as he caught her in his arms and held her close.
"Are you alright?" he breathed before pushing her away at arm's length to look her over and she nodded, unable to speak over the forming in her throat or the tears welling in her eyes. He sighed again and pulled her in again to hold her close once more before his eyes went darting around the control…and he finally noticed it. "What the hell's happened to my TARDIS?"
"That's what I asked him!" Olivia reported as they pulled away and she gestured to the older man standing a few feet away who was now looking at them with a drawn, irritated expression.
"Your TARDIS?" he echoed, turning to the couple. "I think you mean my TARDIS."
"Your TARDIS?!" the Doctor boomed, and was about to march toward him, but Olivia stepped between them as the other Doctor raised a brow at his anger in amusement before glancing around the room, looking for something.
"Where's Clara?" he frowned in wonder, making Olivia frown back at him as he made his way toward the stairs where her Doctor had come from. "Clara!"
"Who's Clara?" Olivia's Doctor frowned in wonder, making Olivia look to him with a frown of wonder and he met her gaze, asking, "What's wrong?"
"You don't know who she is?" she wondered.
"Should I?"
"He knows me. I thought you would know her."
"He knows you?" he echoed, looking up to the older man just as a young woman with short brown hair styled in a 20s do with a clip a sparkling clip and brown eyes stepped down the stairs in a flapper dress and T-strapped heels and toward the bottom of the stairs. The Doctor marched toward him, snapping, "How do you know Olivia?!"
"Who are they?" the young woman asked, both knowing this must be Clara.
"No clue," the other Doctor shrugged dramatically before turning to head toward the door. "But they were just leaving."
"But you knew my name," Olivia recalled, following him toward the door, making him stop and turn back to her as she caught up with him. "You know me. You called me Liv. Only he calls me that. How do you know me?!"
All eyes turned to him as Olivia kept her gaze on him, waiting for an explanation. He rolled his eyes and marched back to the console.
"We don't have time for that!" he snapped. "We have to figure out how we can all be in the same TARDIS without making it explode. If we're both the Doctor…then one of us is in a parallel universe."
"I thought that was impossible," Clara recalled, continuing down the stairs as Olivia's Doctor stepped toward the console as well, Olivia watching everyone closely.
"It is, but it's happened before," Olivia's Doctor explained, stepping up next to the console with the other Doctor to lean on it and watch him. "I'm guessing, since Olivia and I were trying to get into my TARDIS and ended up in this one, that we are the ones in the parallel universe."
"Well, obviously," the other Doctor retorted.
"Oi, be nice," Clara chided, making him roll his eyes as Olivia's gaze darted between all of them. "So they've ended up in our universe, but how?"
"That's what we have to figure out," Olivia's Doctor replied before looking to the other Doctor again and adding, "But my guess is one of us had their shields down, and my guess is it was you."
The other Doctor looked up at Olivia's Doctor and his voice cracked when he questioned, "Me?!"
"We were stationary," Olivia's Doctor shot back.
"You're sayin' this is my fault?!"
"I didn't, but if the chameleon circuit fits!"
"Oh, god, Theta. No, no. Don't…Don't do that," Olivia finally cut in, approaching the console and drawing everyone's attention to her as she turned to Clara, sticking her hand out for a handshake. "First of all, Olivia Felton, and you're, Clara, was it?"
"That's me," Clara nodded, taking Olivia's hand and shaking it, firmly. "Clara Oswald."
"Nice to meet you," Olivia smiled.
"Nice to meet you, too," Clara nodded as they released each other's hands.
"Perfect." Olivia turned to the Doctors now staring at the girls. "Second of all, you two need to stop bickering so we can figure this out, got it?"
"Alright, Liv," her Doctor nodded, ruffling his hair with a hand, but when the other Doctor didn't respond, she gave him an expectant brow raise.
"What?" he blurted.
"I need an acknowledgment, Scotty," she retorted.
"Scotty?!"
"Doctor, just say you understand and don't fight with him anymore, yeah?" Clara chimed in.
"Oh, Clara, not you, too," he groaned, but when they all waited for him to respond he rolled his eyes and growled, "Fine. No more bickering."
"Good," Olivia nodded, along with Clara, but Olivia had one more thing she needed answered. "Now, lastly: You are gonna tell me how you know me."
Clara's Doctor glanced around at the three faces, all waiting for an answer again, but when he looked back at Clara, seeing what she was wearing, he recalled what was going on before Olivia and her Doctor showed up.
"Well, what are you standing there for, Olivia?!" he demanded, waving at her, making the three frown at him in confusion, then glance at each other. "Go get dressed! You can't go out looking like that! Go on!"
"What's he going on about?" Olivia's Doctor frowned in confusion as Olivia looked to Clara who had a smirk over her red lips before looking to the other woman.
"Come with me," Clara smirked, reaching out a black gloved hand to gently take Olivia's elbow and pull her slightly after her.
"But you didn't—!"
"Olivia, trust me, just come with me," Clara cut in, still pulling her along, leaving the Doctors together at the console.
Olivia's Doctor stepped toward Clara's Doctor, narrowing his eyes in examination as the other Time Lord only kept his gaze on his work on the console.
"Quit staring."
"How do you know Olivia?"
"I don't. I was bluffing."
"No you weren't."
"How would you know?"
"You look at her the way I do."
Clara's Doctor finally stopped what he was doing and looked up at Olivia's Doctor to glare at him before sighing in defeat.
"Fine," he growled. "But you don't tell her. I will…when I'm ready."
"Fine, but you'd better be ready quick. Liv doesn't like being left in the dark, and we've got to get back to our own world before this one implodes with you and I in one universe."
"I know, I know. Look, do you want to hear the story or not?"
"I'm grumpy in this universe," Olivia's Doctor muttered, making Clara's Doctor glare at him. "What happened to you?"
The glare dropped and he looked back to the console to fiddle with it before ordering, "Help me with these readings and I'll tell you how I know her. If I recall correctly she'll take a while to find something proper to wear."
"Yeah," Olivia's Doctor sighed, placing his hands on the console. "She does."
Meanwhile in the TARDIS wardrobe...
"I've narrowed it down to these," Olivia told Clara as they stood in front of twenty-nine flapper dresses…all some shade of purple. "What do you think?"
"I think you take far too long to get ready," Clara smirked, sitting on a stool under a rack of clothes.
"Only when it's a different century," Olivia smirked back, looking over the dresses, before choosing one and holding it up in front of her, turning to Clara.
"Nope," Clara shook her head, and Olivia tossed the dress on a stool near her. "How long have you been traveling with…your Doctor?"
"Oh, ages," Olivia chuckled, looking over the other dresses before pulling down three and tossing them with the other dress. "Must be…almost five years? Nearly five? I can never keep a proper track. You know how it is traveling with him. It's relative."
"Yeah," Clara replied, playing with her bracelet, distractedly. Olivia frowned at her tone, but said nothing for the moment as she took down a few more dresses for the reject pile. "Very relative."
"What about you?" Olivia asked, taking one dress down and turning to her to hold it. "How long have you been with yours?"
"About a year now," Clara replied through a sad smile, making Olivia frown slightly when the brunette looked up at her. "He's regenerated once already. I'm still sort of getting used to this new face."
"I know the feeling," Olivia smiled with a nod. "My Doctor—You know, we're gonna have to come up with names to differentiate between the two of them."
"I like Scotty for mine," Clara chuckled, making Olivia laugh as she stepped toward the screen in the room to change behind it. "But he didn't seem to like it much. Yours looks like Elvis in those blue suede shoes."
"Scotty and Elvis," Olivia laughed, heartily as she stepped out from behind the screen, pulling her hair from under the collar of her dress and shaking it out. "They're gonna hate us."
"Want me to do your hair?" Clara wondered, standing from the stool as Olivia slipped on a pair of shoes.
"Sure," Olivia smiled as a vanity appeared from behind a slot in the wall nearest to them and she pulled a stool over to it to sit as Clara came up behind her. "I'll do my make-up. Where are we headed anyway?"
"Don't really know, actually," Clara admitted, taking the brush on the vanity top to brush Olivia's hair, then shrugged, "He just told me to get dressed like this. I guess it's something to do with the twenties. He said: Something perfect for the last hurrah."
Olivia frowned in confusion before turning to look up at Clara in wonder, echoing, "Last hurrah? You're leaving him?"
"You make it sound like he's my boyfriend or somethin'," Clara retorted through a smirk. "He's not. He's my friend. Well…was my friend. I've got a boyfriend back home—Danny, is his name. I love him. I have a life there, and…I just can't do this anymore. Not like this. Not after what he did."
"What did he do?" Olivia asked and Clara met her gaze before lifting a hand to silently order her to turn back around with a twirl of her hand. Olivia spun back around on her stool to look at Clara in the mirror, expectantly. "Well?"
"Alright, alright, let's just get you ready before he gets angry because we're late," Clara retorted, brushing Olivia's hair before she began her story.
Later...
"Liv! Hurry up!" her Doctor shouted from the bottom of the stairs where he'd seen her and Clara disappear. He'd gone to the wardrobe earlier to see how they were getting on, but the TARDIS kept moving him around the room so he couldn't find them…and instead directed him to a section where he could change. Clara's Doctor was not happy when he came down with a different suit instead of the girls. He was now in a black button-down shirt, a black, white pin-striped waistcoat and black suit, a white Fedora with a black band and his usual blue suede shoes.
"Clara!" her Doctor shouted as well, standing right next to Olivia's Doctor at the bottom of the stairs. "We'll be late! Quit chatting her ear off!"
On cue, both girls came down the stairs, Clara first and Olivia behind her in a plum colored dress that had tier upon tier of fringe, spaghetti straps and hung to mid-thigh on her with silver T-strap shoes, similar to Clara's, and long silver gloves on her hands. Her hair was curled and pinned into a 20s style bun, thin wisps of curls hanging from her hairline and a silver, beaded band around her head, a peacock feather sticking up over her left ear.
Clara continued all the way down the stairs, but Olivia stopped halfway down the stairs, looking to both the Doctors as they stared up at her.
"Well, Scotty, is this better now?" she questioned as Clara watched both Doctor's closely at their reactions.
She noticed her Doctor swallow hard before he replied, "Yes, that's much better—Hang on! Scotty?!"
"Well we have to be able to tell you two apart, don't we?" Clara shot back as Olivia continued down the stairs, and Olivia's Doctor snickered, making Clara's Doctor glare at him, irritably before Clara spoke up again at him. "And you're Elvis."
"I'm what?!" Olivia's Doctor snapped in wide-eyed shock, making Clara's Doctor burst into an actual, loud laugh before he turned to head for the console, Olivia's Doctor looking to her when she reached the bottom of the stairs. "Elvis?!"
"Blue suede shoes, babe," she smirked, shrugging as she passed him and made for the console as he watched her. "It's your own fault."
"Have you two figured out how to get these two back yet?" Clara wondered at Scotty as she followed Olivia, Elvis right behind them.
"We have, since you took so long," Scotty shot back as he and Elvis began operating the console.
"We stepped through a passing rift in our world just as they flew through one in this world," Elvis explained. "All we have to do is find another rift with the same frequency and fly straight through it."
"How can you know it has the same frequency?" Clara wondered, watching them fly the TARDIS.
"The TARDIS scans everything out of the ordinary that happens around her," Scotty replied, stepping to another side of the console, between her and Olivia. "I've set an alarm to go off when it finds it."
"I thought rifts only dropped things from other times in the same universe, not parallels," Olivia recalled. "This doesn't make sense."
"Lots of things don't make sense, Liv. Haven't you learned that by now?" Elvis smirked down at her.
"I have," Olivia nodded, leaning on the console and adding, "For instance, it doesn't make sense that we are headed to wherever it is Scotty wants to take us instead of searching for another rift and trying to get home."
The Doctors glanced at each other before Elvis lifted a hand to ruffle his hair as he shrugged, "Well…since we're here and…we don't really know when we'll find another rift I thought…maybe we could tag alone on this one?"
Olivia narrowed her gaze at him before giving a huge nod then looking to Scotty, sardonically asking, "And you're alright with this, are you?"
"Oh…perfectly fine," he grumbled, making Clara look at him with a frown.
"Well, I'm fine with it, too, since no one's asking," she blurted, placing her hands on her hips and Olivia looked to her.
"I was just about to ask you," Olivia assured her, stepping closer to Clara to speak in a nearly hushed tone. "Are you sure it's alright? Because he and I can just stay here while you two have your time together."
"Olivia, really, it's alright," Clara smiled. "I'll be glad of the extra company."
Olivia grinned and nodded, wrapping on of her arms around Clara's as they turned to the Doctors.
"Right then!" Elvis grinned back, flipping a switch with a flare. "Andiamo!"
"Calm down before you break something," Scotty retorted, doing the same thing and making Olivia give a small giggle as Clara rolled her eyes and he looked to Olivia in wide-eyed wonder. "What?"
"Oh…nothing," Olivia smirked before the TARDIS came to a shuddering halt and she frowned in wonder before looking at him again. "Smooth landing. How come you can't pull that off?"
"Liv, I love you, stop insulting me," Elvis muttered, pouting like a child and making her laugh before she looked to Scotty. He was glancing at the two of them as he made a few adjustments on the console then turned to Clara.
"Come on, Clara," he called, marching toward the door and Clara frowned at his mood before following him.
"Alright, Liv, let's go," Elvis smiled, holding his arm out for Olivia to take but he frowned at her when he saw her watching Scotty and Clara heading for the door. "Liv?"
She jumped and looked up at him with wide eyes, blurting out, "What?"
"You alright?" he hoped, looking her over, closely.
"Yeah, I'm fine," she chirped, finally taking his offered arm and smiling up at him.
"You look gorgeous, Liv," he grinned, making her smile widen as well before he led her toward the door as Scotty and Clara walked out.
"Your train awaits, my lady," Scotty told Clara, taking her hand to lead her out of the TARDIS, Elvis doing the same for Olivia before the door shut behind them.
They all took a few steps into the dim room full of luggage. Music from the car they were connected to could be heard as Clara stopped a few feet from the TARDIS.
"Wonderful," Clara nodded with a smile, before looking to Scotty.
"The baggage car. But thanks for lying," he retorted, passing her to stand by the door of the car.
"This is so you," Olivia muttered to Elvis as they followed Clara when she stepped forward. "Landing in a baggage car…or a storage closet."
"Or the room of a high school graduate," Elvis shot back.
"Creeper," she muttered, making him chuckle.
"The real wonderful is through here," Scotty reported, lifting a hand to entreat her through the door.
Clara stepped through, Scotty heading after her, Olivia and Elvis right behind him and into the dark hallway. Olivia frowned in wonder as she glanced around, feeling a sense of déjà vu as they all stopped at another door.
"Theta," Olivia whispered, making him hum in response. "Doesn't this seem familiar to you?"
He frowned in thought but when he was about to reply, Scotty began speaking.
"There were many trains to take the name Orient Express…but only one in space," Scotty announced, opening the door into the car full of people bustling around as Olivia and Elvis shared a nostalgic smile.
Clara chuckled and stepped through the door, followed by the couple who shut the door behind them. The people in the room were all dressed in the 20s style, the music now louder and Olivia's eyes went to the singer at the other end of the car.
"Of course it is," Clara smiled and Scotty smiled back at her.
"Completely faithful recreation of the Orient Express," he began. "Except bigger."
"And in space," Elvis blurted, earning a glare from Scotty and an elbow in the rib from Olivia. "Ow!"
"Quiet. Take a break," she muttered out of the corner of her mouth.
"Oh, and the rails are actually hyperspace ribbons," Scotty resumed. "But in every other respect, identical. Painstaking attention to detail…most of the time."
The music began to pick up tempo and Olivia couldn't help but start moving with the music, making both Doctors look to her with a fond smile as Clara looked around with a sad smile. Scotty looked to Clara for her reaction, but when he saw her expression he rolled his eyes.
"You're doin' it again," he blurted, catching everyone's attention.
"Doing what?" Clara wondered, looking up at him.
"The smile."
"Yeah, I'm smiling."
"It's the sad smile. It's a smile but you're sad. It's confusing. It's like two emotions at once. It's like you're malfunctioning."
"Sorry," Clara muttered, turning away from him.
"Hey! Elvis, why don't you show me some of those moves you're famous for!" Olivia chimed in, taking his hand and pulling him toward the dancing group. "You know I can't resist a dance floor!"
"But, wait…Liv—!"
Olivia continued dragging him until they reached the makeshift dance floor and she yanked him toward her to pull his arms around her to dance. They easily fell into the steps as Olivia looked at the two still standing at the door, talking.
"Mind telling me what that was about?" he asked, drawing her attention back to him, their gazes meeting as he waited for her explanation.
"Look, this is their last trip together, that's why Clara's on edge," she blurted out, making his eyes shoot wide in disbelief.
"Their last?!" he blurted as they still danced. "Why?!"
"Apparently he went too far on the trip before this one," she explained. "She told me the whole story and I have to agree with her. You're so different in this universe…it's like night and day."
"He is rather grumpy," he noticed as she looked over at them and smiled to see them arm in arm and taking a drink each to stand at one of the tables to look out the window. "And those eyebrows…yikes."
"We still don't know how he knows me," she recalled as they looked to each other again. "And the fact that we met…but I'm not with him now makes me wonder why? Was I like Clara and left because he went a step too far or am I…?"
"Don't even think that, Liv," he whispered when she trailed off. "I'm sure you're safe and sound, wherever you are."
"I hope so," she sighed, leaning her cheek against his chest as they danced. "We're not leaving here without finding out."
"Of course not," he smiled, holding her closer with the hand around her waist. "Anything for you, Olivia Felton."
A/N: I just couldn't resist! I'm already having fun with the interactions between the four of them! oh my gosh! this is gonna be so much fun! reviews?
