Chapter 34: Thirty-four Saved
"Doctor," Olivia called, drawing his attention to her as she used her Sonic on the computer she was on before he stepped toward her just as she turned to him. "This is all the information you wanted on…that project you gave me."
"Perfect," he grinned as she handed him her Sonic to let him examine it. "I knew you could do it."
"Gus lowered the suppression field," she noticed, indifferently. "My Sonic is working again. Which means our better halves will be here with Maisie soon."
"Uh-huh," he hummed, still looking over the Sonic as she rolled her eyes at him.
She took a deep breath before stepping closer to him to whisper, "Look, rule number one: The Doctor lies. I get that, but do you have to take it so seriously? Do you have to make others do it for you?"
"What are you talking about?" he frowned up at her, either pretending he hadn't heard or he really hadn't.
"Nothing," she ground out, turning and stomping away from him.
She wasn't sure what to expect. He was like a whole other person from the man she knew, in every sense. Still…at the same time, she could see the Doctor – her Highwayman – somewhere in his eyes.
"Olivia," he called, followed her when she stopped and turned to him. "What's this plan I'm not going to like?"
"Doctor—"
"If it's what I think is it, then you're insane," he cut in, making her frown at him in wonder.
"What do you think I'm gonna do?"
"You tell me."
"I'm not falling for your mind games, Doctor. I've been with you long enough to know the rules and play them just as well as you can. You'll just have to find out."
The door at one end of the cabin opened, drawing their attention to Clara, Elvis and Maisie as they stepped in. They both rushed toward them, Olivia hugging Clara before Elvis grabbed her around the waist to hug her close when she approached him, but Scotty instantly grabbed Maisie's hand.
"Hello, again," the blonde smiled. "I'm Maisie."
"Good for you," Scotty replied, dragging her toward the center of the cabin.
"We passed the TARDIS on the way here," Clara announced, marching after them as Elvis released Olivia to take her hand and follow the three. "Thought about getting inside…hiding. Pulling the levers and hoping for the best."
"We couldn't get in it," Elvis reported as the Doctor yanked the scanner from Perkins to aim it at Maisie. "I noticed something was off. There's a forcefield around it."
"It's probably Gus trying to block our escape route," Scotty theorized, still scanning Maisie.
"But how does he even know what it is, because if he knows what it is, then he knows what you are," Clara shot back as Olivia watched them closely, Elvis gripping her hand so tightly she thought he'd break her fingers.
"Tell me your plan," he whispered.
"Not now, dear," she replied.
Scotty looked to Clara and realized he'd been caught. He lowered the scanner and Olivia could tell he was trying to think of a clever lie to tell her.
"He has…tried to entice me here before," he finally confessed. "Free tickets…mysterious summons. Even phoning the TARDIS and you know how difficult it is to—"
"You knew," Clara cut in, angrily. "You knew this was no relaxing break. You knew this was dangerous."
"He's in it now," Olivia sighed, shaking her head.
"I didn't know," Scotty retorted, defensively, but added, "I certainly hoped."
"See, it's this," Clara reported, lowering her tone. "This is why I'm leaving you, because you lied. You lied to me again. And you nearly made me lie to make me your accomplice."
"What?" Maisie called, trying to catch her attention. "Sorry. When did you lie?"
"She didn't," Elvis called, drawing everyone's attention to him but he looked to Olivia. "Did she, darling?"
"No," Olivia replied, releasing his hand and stepping toward Maisie. "No, she didn't lie. I have a plan."
"Olivia…" Scotty called in a warning tone.
"Shut up," she shot back, stopping in front of the blonde, who looked very confused.
"Oi!" Scotty snapped at Elvis. "Blue Suede Shoes! Do something! Stop her!"
"What's going on?" Clara frowned between them.
"Everybody, shut up!" Olivia snapped before placing her hands on either side of Maisie's head, closing her eyes. "Maisie, I need you to relax as much as you can, let me in, and focus. Focus on all your hurt."
"Olivia, stop it, now!" Scotty snapped as both he and Elvis raced up to either side of her, but he was ignored.
"I want you to imagine putting it all in a box, and handing it over to me, got it?"
"I knew you were crazy, but this is absolutely stupid!" Scotty hissed.
"I'm trying to concentrate, please go away," Olivia ground out.
"This was your plan?" Elvis shrieked. "Put yourself in a position to die?!"
"I thought to myself, 'What would the Doctor do?' Now hush!" she snapped.
Scotty glared at her as she kept her eyes shut, gritting her teeth in concentration as she searched through Maisie's mind, finding the box, and reached for it. Maisie gave a gasp as Olivia took on her feelings…but Olivia had never done this before. She shouted in pain and yanked her hands from Maisie's head before stumbling back and into a pair of arms.
"Liv, are you alright?" Elvis hoped, keeping her on her feet as he held her.
"I'm fine," she assured him, steadying herself.
"Mind telling me what you think you're doing?" he growled in her ear, not wanting to look unconfident in front of his other self.
"Trust me," she whispered, turning to him to press a kiss to his cheek. "For luck."
"Olivia Felton what do you think you're doing?!" Scotty snapped, marching in front of her to glare at her.
"You need to know what it looks like, don't you?" she shot back just before the lights in the cabin flickered. "Oh, joy. There it is."
"Do we start the clock?" Perkins asked, warily.
"Not yet," Scotty replied as Elvis held Olivia's shoulders, watching her closely and feeling her start to tremble. "Olivia—!"
"I know!" she snarled, keeping her gaze ahead at the mummy coming at her, trying to be braver than her fears. "The decay is severe. No eyes, hardly a nose, rotting teeth, the ribs are almost fully exposed. It's moving slow."
"Well, yes, because it can't kill you until the sixty-six seconds are up," Elvis murmured then added, "…I think."
"Not helping," Olivia growled.
"Why are you so calm all of a sudden?!" Scotty growled at him. "Why aren't you worried?!"
"Why are you?" Elvis shot back, calmly, but Scotty noticed his fingers digging into Olivia's shoulders.
He was frightened beyond words.
"Right, I'm putting a stop to this," Scotty announced, gripping his scanner and about to step in front of Olivia.
"Wait!" Olivia called, making all eyes shoot to her in disbelief. "There's markings under the bandages—!"
Her eyes suddenly shot wider as she began backing up against Elvis, who moved back with her.
"Hold her still!" Scotty ordered, and Elvis held her against him as Scotty aimed the scanner at her, noting her breathing was becoming ragged. "Maisie's trauma-box, focus on it!"
"It's passing through you!" she cried.
"Focus!" Scotty ordered, making her eyes find his and finally focus. "There's the trauma-box…" He pulled the scanner back to aim it at his own head and pulled the trigger, wincing, "And now it's mine."
Olivia gave a tired sigh as she slumped back against Elvis who caught her and swept her up to sit her down in one of the seats as she breathed, "It's gone."
"No…no it's not," Scotty argued as Clara and Maisie rushed to Olivia's side. "Not for me. Because now it thinks I'm Maisie."
"Take care of her," Elvis told the girls.
"What's wrong with her?" Clara asked.
"Mental exhaustion," Elvis explained, standing to step toward Scotty.
"Start the clock," Scotty ordered Perkins as he turned toward the other end of the cabin. He stared in wide-eyed excitement at the invisible mummy rushing toward it, saying, "Hello! I'm so pleased to finally see you! I'm the Doctor and I will be your victim this evening! Are you my mummy?"
He backed away gradually as he examined what he could see.
"So, are there magic words? Is there a way to stop you in your tracks?" he asked, backing away then asked Maisie, "Oh, you really didn't like your gran, did you?"
"The markings!" Elvis reminded him, stepping along with him, watching him. "What are the markings Liv saw?"
"What's he doing?" Olivia breathed sitting up, but Maisie and Clara kept her in her seat. "What's he done?"
"By the way, you weren't being paranoid. She really did poison your pony," Scotty told Maisie, who gasped as Olivia glared between the two Doctors when she realized what was happening.
"You idiots!" she snarled, sitting up fully.
"Ah! Welcome back, Liv!" Elvis grinned, just before Scotty ran toward the scroll hanging on the wall, sending Elvis in that direction as well.
"Markings like the ones on the scroll!" Scotty announced, before telling Maisie, "Oh, and your father…sorry."
"A tattered piece of cloth attached to a length of wood that he would kill for," Elvis began, then realized, "That's a flag, not a scroll!"
"Thirty seconds!" Perkins called.
"And if this is a flag, that means that you are a soldier…wounded in a forgotten war, thousands of years ago. But they've worked on you, haven't they, son? They've filled you full of kit. State of the art phase camouflage, personal teleporter."
"Ten seconds," Perkins counted.
"All that tech in him won't let him die," Elvis realized.
"It won't let the war end," Scotty finished, backing farther away toward the other end of the cabin until his back was against the wall. "It just won't let you stop until the war is over. We surrender!"
"Zero," Perkins announced, looked to the Doctor.
"I can see it!" Maisie gasped, pointing at the mummy who was holding its hands up to either side of Scotty's head before lowering them.
"It's ok," Clara assured her. "I think we all can."
"Do I start the clock?" Perkins wondered.
"No," Elvis sighed, stepping toward him to place a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "The clock is stopped."
They all stared at the mummy as it stood at attention in front of Scotty before the mummy slowly saluting him, as he nodded, "You're relieved, soldier."
The mummy instantly dissolved in front of him as everyone let out a sigh.
"He's not the only one," Perkins sighed, as Scotty knelt down toward the pile of dust and bandages to lift a piece of tech with wires hanging from it.
"We were fighting that?" Clara frowned as he stood again.
"So was he," Scotty replied, stepping to the center of the cabin.
"Listen, what I said—"
"Save it," Scotty cut in, holding the tech up to examine it. "We're not out of the woods yet. Well, Gus I think we solved your little puzzle."
"Ancient soldier being driven by malfunctioning tech," Elvis summarized as Scotty sat at one of the tables to examine it further with his Sonic. Elvis rushed toward Olivia to help her up as she stood, examining her closely before asking, "How are you feeling?"
"Fine," she sighed. "Just a little dizzy. What's he doing?"
"Thank you so much for your efforts," Gus announced. "They are greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, survivors of this exercise are not required."
"Oh, well, there's a shocker," Scotty shot back, taking a tool from another table as everyone started choking and gasping.
"Air will now be removed for the entire train. We hope you enjoyed your journey on the Orient Express."
"Suffocation," Olivia choked as her legs gave way, but Elvis caught her and sat her down again. "Not my first choice of death."
"I take it you know a way out," Clara gasped at Scotty.
"My enemy's enemy is my friend," Scotty explained, pulling the piece apart. "Especially when he has a built in teleporter."
"Great! So use it!"
"A little more work. Couple of minutes. Max. I'll give you a shout."
Clara passed out, falling into Elvis' arms just as he passed her, heading toward Scotty. He set her on the floor, gently before rushing toward Scotty.
"Hack?" he guessed.
"Hack," Scotty confirmed, tossing Olivia's Sonic to him as he raced toward a computer. "Olivia got us our head start."
"That's our girl," Elvis grinned, working quickly before his grin instantly dropped. "Oh…no."
"What?"
"Um…the train is about to blow up. Apparently Gus doesn't want his real employer to be found out."
"Get anything at all?"
"Not much."
"Right, well this is working now. Hang on!"
Scotty slammed his hand down on the tech…just before the Orient Express exploded.
Later...
Olivia groaned as she awoke, lifting a hand to rub her head when the pain of her headache throbbed, then frowned in wonder when she realized she was wrapped in a blanket…and a pair of arms. She craned her neck up to see a familiar smile and loving blue eyes staring down at her.
"Hello, Liv," Elvis smiled, hugging her closer to his chest as she leaned back against him before he daintily held up a pill between his thumb and forefinger in front of her. "Headache?"
"Yeah," she grumbled, holding her hand, palm up to let him drop the pill into her hand and she tossed it into her mouth before finally having a look around at where they were. The sound of waves filled her senses as she realized they were on a beach covered in pebbles of all shapes and sizes, and she couldn't help but feel so relaxed as the pill he'd given her instantly soothed her aching head. "Where are we? Where are Clara and Scotty?"
"They're here," he assured her, nodding his head forward and she looked ahead to see Clara lying on a blanket and wrapped in one as well amongst the pebbles, Scotty standing in front of her drawing in the sand with a huge stick. "The TARDIS is too. We made it out alive."
"Obviously," Olivia snickered before she noticed Clara stir, waking up and looking around as well.
"Oh, hello, again," Scotty greeted her. "Sleep well, you two?"
"Weren't we on a train?" Clara asked, glancing around before waving to Elvis and Olivia, who waved back.
"Oh, that was ages ago," Scotty retorted, still drawing in the sand.
"And?" Clara prompted.
"And what?" Scotty wondered, before realization dawned on him and he continued, "Oh, and we got off the train. Oh, well, the teleporter worked…eventually. Beamed everyone into the TARDIS. No casualties. Just a bevy of sleeping beauties."
"I tried hacking Gus to find out who set this all up," Elvis chimed in. "Yeah, he…didn't like that. It set off some fail-safe. Blew up the train."
"Blew up the train?!" Olivia gasped, sitting forward.
"Blew up the train," Scotty echoed. "But we got away…then dropped everyone off at the nearest civilized planet, which happened to be here."
"You blew up the train we were married in?" Olivia pouted, trying not to say it loud enough for Scotty to hear…but he had and stared at them in wide-eyed disbelief. Elvis whispered an apology in her ear before she looked back at the two, catching Scotty's gaze and her expression dropped when she realized he'd heard her.
"A-Anyway…" Scotty resumed, looking to his drawings in the sand, "You two seemed happy asleep so we just left you."
"So you saved everyone," Clara smiled, slightly.
"No, I just saved you three and let everyone else suffocate," Scotty retorted, laughing without humor as Clara hummed with a smirk. "Yeah, this is just my cover story."
Olivia chewed on her lower lip in thought before opening her mouth to ask him something…but Clara beat her to it.
"So when you almost made me lie to Maisie—?"
"I couldn't risk Gus finding out my plan and stopping me," Scotty cut in, glancing to Olivia.
"So all that time…" Olivia began, trailing off when everyone's attention turned to her, but she kept her focus on Scotty. "When we were in that cabin…you were just pretending to be heartless?"
Scotty glanced between the two girls as Elvis looked up at him, waiting for his answer.
"Would you like to think that about me? Would that make it easier?"
Olivia said nothing as the look in his eyes made her heart ache.
He was in turmoil with himself…as he always was.
"I didn't know if I could save her," he resumed. "I couldn't save Quell, I couldn't save Moorhouse…there was a good chance that she'd die too. At which point, I would have just moved onto the next…and the next, until I beat it."
He stepped up the rocks to sit in between Clara and Elvis, still holding onto Olivia, looking out to the horizon, and Olivia didn't have to see his expression to know exactly what he was thinking.
"Sometimes the only choices you have are bad ones," he explained. "But you still have to choose."
Elvis hugged Olivia even closer, both understanding…both knowing how true it was.
"How many were saved?" Olivia suddenly asked to anyone that would answer.
"Thirty-four passengers," Elvis recalled. "That's the scientists and some other, what Gus would call…'Less valuable passengers.'"
Olivia smiled up at him before looking to Scotty as he began drawing in the sand again. Her smile grew a little wider as she lifted her foot and nudged Scotty's knee, making him shoot a wide-eyed stare at her.
"Thirty-four lives saved," she smiled. "That's a job well done, I'd say."
Scotty's expression fell and he gave a small smirk.
"I agree," Clara nodded with a smile of her own, making him turn to her, and his smile grew a little before they all looked to the horizon. "Let's stay here a while. It's really nice."
"I second the motion," Elvis grinned, kissing Olivia's head, making her grin as well.
"We should get back—"
"Don't you dare," Olivia cut in to Scotty's objection, lifting her feet to rest them on his knees before he could get up and he looked at her in wide-eyed disbelief. "You just saved thirty-four people from being blown up. You deserve to relax. Sit and stay."
"I'm not a bloody dog!" he snapped as Elvis laughed heartily and Olivia only grinned at him.
"Then how did I get you so well trained?" she shot back, and it was Elvis' turn to frown at her in disbelief as Clara laughed.
"Funny," Scotty grumbled, turning back to his drawing and making Olivia shift to sit closer to him, Elvis scooting closer to her as well, both of them looking over what he was drawing. He looked to the two of them with a frown as he blurted, "What?"
"That's wrong," Elvis said, pointing at something Scotty had drawn.
"Is that some kind of equation?" Olivia wondered, Clara scooting closer to look over his other shoulder.
"It is not wrong," Scotty argued. "You are not factoring in—What are you doing?!"
Elvis was erasing something Scotty had drawn in the sand and scribbling something else in.
"There," Elvis grinned, sitting back and looking to Scotty, pointing at it and nodding, "See? Fixed."
"No!" Scotty growled, erasing the correction. "I told you, you're not factoring—Stop that! You're acting like a child! Leave my work alone! Do your own!"
"It's Robin Hood all over again," Clara smirked, making Olivia lean over to see her around the two Doctors.
"You met Robin Hood too?!" she grinned, and Clara nodded, her face lighting up before Olivia shot to her feet and raced around to sit next to her, the Doctors still arguing over the equation. "Tell me everything about yours, and I'll tell you about mine."
A/N: this was very much the Olivia and Scotty show, lol! hope you enjoyed how I wrote it up, and there's gonna be some more of course! reviews?
