Chapter 36: Now it's Thirty-six
"Come on!" Olivia laughed, clutching Scotty's hand as she stood at the top of the stairs and pulled on his arm while he sat on the top step, music blasting from the console and around the control room. "This is my new song!"
"You have a new song every week, as I recall," Scotty retorted, unmoving but unable to help smirking as he watched her dance in her spot to Shut Up and Dance by Walk the Moon. "Besides, Elvis will be very jealous if you start dancing with me."
"Oh, like that would stop you," she shot back with a sly smirk before dancing again to the beat, and when it came to the chorus of the song, and he finally stood, she pulled him around the console…unable to help what she did next. "Now don't you dare look back. Just keep your eyes on me."
"You're holding back," he retorted without missing a beat as they stopped near the stairs leading deeper into the TARDIS.
"Shut up and dance with me!" she grinned before moving to the beat again, not caring how she looked as she held onto Scotty's hands and he only watched her, still not dancing.
"Olivia Felton, you traitor."
Scotty looked to Elvis as he came up the stairs with Clara right behind him, but Olivia still danced, seemingly ignoring them.
"Told you he'd be jealous," Scotty smirked at her when she finally stopped to lean back on the console.
"Jealous of himself," Clara added, leaning next to her and making Olivia laugh before Elvis grabbed her hand and pulled her closer to whisper something into her ear.
"Clara Oswin Oswald."
Olivia frowned in utter confusion before it suddenly clicked. Everything. The voice, the humor and the familiarity. This was the girl that had helped them get through the Dalek Asylum.
"How?" she breathed, meeting his gaze in awe and disbelief.
"The way Clara explained it was, she split herself up all around my timestream—Well his timestream—Scotty's…before he Scotty. Anyway, he ended up finding her…the real her, but what she had done was still in her future. You know, wibbly wobbly—"
"Timey-wimey," Olivia nodded in understanding. "Yeah. So…that doesn't explain how she was in our universe as Oswin, too."
"Could be some of her split up over the parallel universes?" Elvis theorized with a shrug. "According to Clara, she was ignored more times than she was heard. But she remembers him mentioning the Dalek Asylum."
"This is insane," Olivia smiled in disbelief before looking to Clara and Scotty who were speaking as they stood next to the console, and she now realized the music had been switched off.
"Did he tell you what you wanted to know?" Elvis wondered, drawing Olivia's attention back to him and she gave a small nod when she registered his question. "Guessing there were tears?"
She nodded again, feeling the tears come back at the thought of what she'd spoken to Scotty about.
"Only thirty-five adventures," she whispered, not trusting her voice to speak any louder. "He kept count…and I don't even know how many adventures you and I have been on."
"Oh, Liv," he sighed, wrapping an arm around her shoulders to pull her close. "You may not know the exact number, but I know you remember every single one, and if you really wanted to, you would count them out."
She nodded against his shoulder with a sniffle, making him hug her a little tighter as he looked to Scotty and Clara laughing over something before Scotty looked to them, something shifting in his eyes when he saw them. It was a look he recognized well enough: The look of a man seeing the woman he loved with another. He'd seen it in many men…and he'd felt it himself.
"Besides…" he whispered into her hair, making her lift her head to look up at him with glassy eyes as he only smiled back at her, "Now it's thirty-six."
She couldn't help but give a smile and nodded in agreement before quickly wiping a tear away as he released her and she turned to the other two, approaching the console once again.
"How dare you turn off my music!" she grinned at Scotty before slamming a hand down on a button on the console that filled the control room with music again.
She ran around Scotty to grab Clara's hand and encouraged her to dance, making the brunette laugh before she began dancing as well. The music suddenly stopped before a blaring alarm sounded, making the girls slap their hands to their ears and the Doctors ran to the console to operate it, Elvis shutting off the alarm and Scotty looking to the screen.
"What is it?" Clara questioned, sailing up next to Scotty as Elvis and Olivia did the same on the other side.
"It's the rift they came through," Scotty replied, all still looking to the screen at the sight of a golden ribbon hovering in the space outside. The two Doctors made a few adjustments on the console as he explained, "We need to get as close as possible so they can just walk right through."
"How do we know it's gonna leave them in the same place it picked them up?" Clara wondered, making the Doctors glance at each other before Elvis looked to Olivia.
"Well, former Torchwood Agent," Elvis prompted Olivia as he helped Scotty drive operate the TARDIS, the latter Time Lord looking to her in surprise at his other self's words. "What would you say the odds of the rift leaving us in the same place are? A million to one? A billion?"
"If it's the same frequency, then it's the same exact rift," Olivia explained as Clara glanced between them. "It should leave us in the TARDIS in our universe. Maybe outside it. But the same time, definitely."
"You sound like him," Clara scoffed and Olivia couldn't help the grin that spread over her face as the two Doctors smirked at each other.
"The result of traveling with him for years," she smirked, looking to the console as she and the Doctors operated the TARDIS.
"Same frequency," Elvis announced, catching everyone's attention before he clicked his fingers, making the doors swing open to reveal space outside the TARDIS and he smirked, "Care for a look?"
"Oi! Don't let in a draft!" Scotty barked, making everyone frown at him before he clicked his fingers as well and the doors shut on their own. "You wanna have a look? Look at it on the console screen. And don't do that. That's my thing."
"What, this?" Clara wondered, lifting a hand and clicking her fingers to make the doors swing open again.
Scotty gave Clara a glare as Elvis burst into a belly laugh while Olivia chuckled, leaning back on the console to watch Scotty's frown deepen.
"Yes, that!" he snapped, clicking his fingers to shut the doors again.
Olivia didn't say a word as she just smirked and lifted a hand, ready to click her fingers as well. Scotty gave her a chiding look…but it did no good.
Olivia clicked her fingers, and the doors opened for her.
Scotty did the same and the doors shut again.
Soon the all took turns teasing Scotty by opening the doors, making him close them again.

"Stop it!" Scotty shouted, slamming his hand down on the console and making them all laugh.
"Come on, you know the best view is through the door," Olivia retorted, clicking her fingers once more to open the doors and this time she ran toward the doors, followed by Elvis and Clara, making Scotty huff in exasperation at them and follow them as well. "I saw plenty of these when I was at Torchwood, but I bet Clara never has."
Clara stepped in front of Elvis to see what looked like a golden ribbon floating through the black of space, its glow fading in and out. Olivia peeked around the frame to grin at it as Elvis placed his hands on Clara's shoulders to keep her from floating outside, Scotty coming up behind Olivia.
"Torchwood?" he asked, making Olivia turn to him in wide-eyed wonder and Clara was about to turn to him as well, but Elvis kept her attention on the rift, explaining it to her. "Really, Liv? Torchwood?"
"Well, what was I supposed to do?" Olivia sighed, crossing her arms as she leaned back on the frame. "You—He left me for four years on Earth. Jack found me in LA, convinced me to join and I dropped out of college to go find you. Low and behold…you showed up a year later."
"Jack bloody Harkness," Scotty growled, turning to march back toward the console, but she didn't follow him. "Of all the people."
"It's not what you think, green-eyed idiot," she shot back, making him whirl on her with wide eyes as Clara couldn't help but snicker and Elvis bowed his head in exasperation. "Jack is like a big brother…maybe even like a father to me. After all, he did give me away at our wedding."
"Who is he?" Clara wondered, now intrigued by the conversation, making Elvis sigh as he shut the door when she stepped between Olivia and Scotty on the platform.
"Captain Jack Harkness," Olivia replied when Scotty refused to answer, drawing Clara's attention to her. "Leader of Torchwood Three, Cardiff. Former Time Agent, met the Doctor and Rose Tyler in World War II and became immortal in the year 5 billion when he died and Rose brought him back to life. Looks good in a long coat and is one hell of a dancer."
"Not to mention a tremendous flirt," Elvis added.
"I've heard that name before," Clara recalled with a frown of thought, touching her wrist as she turned back to Scotty. "I used his vortex manipulator to go back in time when the Zygons were trying to invade."
"Was he trapped in an unlocked room with his past selves in the Tower of London?" Olivia smirked, making Clara snicker and nod to her. "Yup, that's our idiot."
"Ok, enough about that," Elvis retorted, drawing everyone's attention to him and Olivia couldn't help but smile at his irritation. "We should get going before we lose the rift again."
Olivia's smile fell before she nodded in return and turned to Clara. The girls smiled knowingly and hugged as the Doctors only nodded to each other for their goodbyes.
"Keep an eye on him, ok?" Olivia murmured as they pulled away, and Clara nodded. "He's difficult, but you're more than a match for him."
"And you," Clara smirked with a nod. "He told me you slapped him. Surprised yours doesn't have any bruises on him."
"That's because I trained mine," Olivia shot back with a wink and Clara laughed.
Elvis stepped up to Olivia, catching Clara's attention and she stepped toward him to say goodbye as Olivia looked to Scotty, who was still operating the console. She stepped up next to him, but he kept his attention on his task even as she leaned next to him, still staring at him.
"I know you're there, Liv," he muttered, still not looking at her.
"I know you know," she smirked. "You're ignoring me on purpose. You do that to avoid a situation you don't like. l do the same thing. I learned it from you."
"Is there a reason you're telling me this?" he retorted.
"Stop sulking and say goodbye to me," she shot back.
Scotty sighed as he leaned heavily on the console before he finally stood and turned to her with one last flick of a switch. She felt tears well in her eyes as she saw the look in his. She bit her lip as she stepped closer when he said nothing and only watched her, closely.
"When the Zygons invaded, in my world, I had been through one of your regenerations," she began, meeting his gaze. "You went from wearing Trainers to wearing a Bowtie, and when we met the Zygons…I saw you as I had first met you again. I had hated it when you regenerated the first time, but what I realized later was that…it wasn't that I hated the regeneration, I hated that I didn't really get to say goodbye to you before it happened."
She took his hand, both their gazes turning to them as she entwined their fingers.
"I got a second chance to say goodbye…properly," she whispered, swallowing before their gazes met again, a tear escaping down her cheek. "This is your second chance, Theta."
He pulled his hand from hers, lifting both hands to cup her face in them, keeping her gaze and brushing her tear away with his thumb, making her give a sad smile.
"Olivia Lydia Felton," he sighed, and she gave a small frown before smiling again when he said, "You know me too well…even from another universe."
"You told me we transcend time and space."
"Well, then I must be right," he smirked and Olivia giggled with a nod and a sniffle, making him smile back, adding, "Thank you."
"For what?" she wondered, lifting her hands to gently grasp his wrists as he still held her face.
"For smiling one more time for me," he replied.
He closed his eyes and pulled her closer, pressing his lips to hers for a soft goodbye kiss. He pulled back a moment later and though it hadn't lasted very long, she felt his sorrow through it. He set his forehead against hers, his eyes still closed as he lowered his hands to her shoulders and she still held his wrists.
"Liv?"
"Yes?"
"Please…stay."
Her heart skipped as she felt tears come to hers eyes again, but she pushed past the lump in her throat to murmur, "You know I can't."
"I know," he sighed, gripping her shoulders, lightly. "I had to ask."
"I know," she nodded, gripping his wrists in return.
"Goodbye, Liv," he shuddered. "I…I love you."
"I love you, too," she smiled. "Goodbye."
They released each other as Olivia turned and made her way to the door where Elvis waited for her, and Clara made her way back to Scotty, standing next to him at the console. Olivia and Elvis both looked back at the pair at the console as Scotty lifted a hand and pulled the lever this time to open the TARDIS doors.
"Well, Doctor, think about this," Olivia grinned up at Scotty, making him frown at her. "Now…we've had thirty-six adventures."
Scotty couldn't help but grin before looking to the console again to operate it, making the TARDIS shudder before the glow of the rift shone brightly through the door.
"Well, off you pop," Scotty called with a wave of his hand toward the door before pointing to Elvis, calling, "And you!"
"Oh, now what?" Elvis grumbled, rolling his eyes.
"Oi! Listen to me, Mr. Hound Dog," Scotty shot back, making both girls laugh hysterically before he marched toward him to meet him eye to eye. "Protect her…with your life if you have to."
"You don't have to tell me twice, old man," Elvis smirked, lifting an arm to wrap it around Olivia's shoulders to hug her, then grinned, "Besides, our little girl needs her mother, right, Liv?"
Scotty frowned in disbelief before looking to Olivia who chewed on her lower lip.
"I…hadn't got to that bit just yet, dear," she muttered out of the corner of her mouth, making Elvis wince before mouthing an apology as Olivia turned back to Scotty, swallowing hard at the look on his face. "We, uh…had a baby. Her name is Amelia River Pond. She's…part human, part Time Lord. She's a little over a year now."
Scotty swallowed hard before giving a nod and turning back to head back to the console as Clara watched in more interest than she could even express.
"Well, you best get going then," Scotty said, turning back to them and tucking his hands into his pockets. "That little girl is waiting for mummy and daddy to get home."
Elvis nodded as Olivia felt tears well in her eyes, knowing he hated that he was seeing what had missed out on…if she had lived in his world. She tore her gaze away from his as they both turned toward the door, instantly gripping each other's hands.
"Don't let go of my hand, Liv," he murmured, and she nodded, her heart thumping in her chest, not knowing what would happen.
She looked back at Scotty one last time and he gave a reassuring nod, making her smile, brightly. Even from a parallel universe, he still knew how to reassure her. She turned forward again, feeling much calmer than she had been a moment ago.
They both lifted a foot each and she closed her eyes as they stepped forward. They were sucked in and sent spinning as if pulled into a tornado, their hands starting to slip as they were pulled in opposite directions.
"Theta!" Olivia screamed, desperately clinging to his hand and trying to reach for his other hand with the other.
"Liv! Hold on!" he shouted back, doing the same to try catching her other hand, but he could feel their fingers slipping. "Don't let go!"
"I can't hold on!" she cried, her fingers slipping from his as they both reached for each other with their free hands, almost catching each other before something shoved their hands away.
They were now holding on by their fingertips, reaching with their free hands once more…but this time, when they were pulled apart, they were pulled apart completely.
"Theta!"
"Olivia!"
She was thrown around before the golden glow that had been around her disappeared to be replaced by bright light, blinding her for a moment before the light was instantly doused by darkness. She frowned before screaming when she realized she was falling…through the clouds above Victorian London. Panic ran through her as she thrashed in the air, watching the city lights come up, far too quickly. She still screamed in terror, but she couldn't hear her own screaming over the wind passing around her ears.
A familiar sound cut through the wind whistling through her ears, making her screams stop as she looked around, hoping to see where the sound was coming from. Instead, all she saw was a blue blur before she grunted when an arm threw itself around her waist and she landed hard against the body it was attached to.
"Liv!"
She looked up to meet concerned blue eyes before the Doctor sighed with a grin, his arms now around her to hug her close.
"You're alright," he sighed, pulling her closer as she noticed they were leaning against the console, the doors shutting when he clicked his fingers then buried his face into her shoulder. "I ended up right outside the TARDIS, and I heard you scream—"
"Just hold me," she shuddered, her arms wrapping around him to hug him so tightly, he thought she was trying to suffocate him.
They remained in each other's arms, the TARDIS on autopilot as it took them back to her time and their home in Los Angeles. After a moment of silence, the Doctor chanced to break it, but still held her.
"I can't wait to see Amelia," he whispered.
"Me either," she murmured back. "Let's have her sleep in our bed tonight."
"Good idea," he smiled, hugging her closer. "Liv?"
"Yeah?"
"Love you."
Olivia couldn't help but chuckle before whispering, "Love you, too."
