Soulmate AU

In this world, everyone is born with a soulmark. This soulmark could be any shape, size or place on your body, but everyone has one. Soulmarks are unique to every person- except for their soulmate. Every pair of soulmates have the same soulmark as each other- same shape, size, place is an exact match to the person who is a better match for you than anybody else in existence, who is, of course, your soulmate.

Soulmarks have existed since the beginning of time, according to the stories told by the three Elders of the Council that ruled over Annabeth's faction, Kijo. Existed ever since the swirling mass of Chaos had made the Earth and Sky, Gaia and Ouranos, the first soulmates. Of course, that pairing had been unfortunate, and instead of uniting their fate-intertwined souls, it drove them apart and from that rose a bitter hatred. It was said that after that failed first match, Fate had sworn never to be wrong again.

Of course, Annabeth thought this was nonsense. True, real soulmates could never truly exist- that was the stuff of fairytales. After all, her mother had been her father's soulmate- that much, she was sure of, and she had left him. Some people never met their soulmates at all, and some only met them after giving up on the concept completely and marrying, having kids even.

For this reason, Annabeth despised soulmarks. They tore apart families apart and were the cause of her father's broken sobs, at two in the morning when he was sure Annabeth was asleep, his forearm outstretched as he remembered his lost soulmate. They were meant to be, but her mother wasn't ready, or mentally stable enough to be in a relationship. So she dumped the baby, her only child, into the arms of Annabeth's father, Frederick Chase, and fled, never to be seen by the Chases ever again. 'Good riddance,' Annabeth always thought, trying to ignore the sting of rejection at the hands of her own mother, no less, the person who's supposed to love you unconditionally, no questions asked. Good riddance.

Growing up, Annabeth had always felt like an outsider- other girls squealing over their soulmarks and making shrines to celebrities who they were *convinced* were their soulmates whilst Annabeth tried desperately to hide the soulmark on her ankle in socks and shoes- never letting anyone see it lest they knew who her 'soulmate' was. She didn't want to marry for that, she wanted to marry for love.

People eventually stopped asking, and her friends knew not to mention it in front of her, as she refused to participate in soulmate-related conversations and got snappy.

There had been war among the factions since before Annabeth could remember, at her ripe old age of 12, but as of four months ago, there was a peace ruling. No more fighting. No more death. The factions had celebrated every single day since then, but only two months ago did they realize the truth about what such 'peace' truly meant- in order to truly be as 'one', they couldn't be separate any longer.

Schools would merge, workplaces would be overrun by different factions, they would have to live together in order for the piece to be truly harmonious, the each Elders of both Kijo and the other 7 factions declared.

Annabeth was... conflicted. On the one hand, she wanted to expand her horizons, meet new people- don't get her wrong, she loved her best friends Leo and Piper, but after knowing them and everyone else in her faction for so long, she craved the feeling of a first with a new friend; finding out their favorite color, seeing them laugh for the first time, finding out what made them tick, learning all they knew and gaining knowledge and insight into a world she wasn't yet part of...

However, on the other hand, what could possibly have changed? The factions still had the old rivalries, even if they were more friendly than violent these days- the Srahu still held a grudge against the Fqyat because of the time one of the Fqyat youth punched a Srahuian Elder in the nose and broke it. These things couldn't be changed from one little peace treaty, could they? Well, one way or another Annabeth was about to find out. Tomorrow marked the opening of the first mixed-faction school since living memory, and, surprise surprise, Annabeth's father had enrolled her: in the name of 'social psychology' he said.

The only good thing about the whole 'moving schools' shebang is that Piper had managed to get herself suspended one too many times and was being forced into transferring by their old school. Leo was also transferring, because he 'couldn't survive without them'.

Annabeth was outwardly sarcastic about his dramatics, but was secretly happy that someone needed and wanted her that much.

Now all she had to do was survive junior year- shouldn't be too hard.. Right?

Go read my new fic please! Xx
