Chapter 1: New World for a Geek
Lisa felt that a stone hit her stomach and had no energy to focus on anything. She wasted her day at home not studying, instead, she used up her time by rewatching season five of Bones.
"Jag har ingen självkontroll," she mumbled on her desk.
(I have no self-control.)
Looked outside the window seeing the grey clouds. Lisa wanted to go away from any electronics for the moment and a walk could be good for the head. grabbing her jacket, cellphone and putting on some shoes before heading out.
Didn't take long before Lisa started to be absorbed in her own thoughts. Would she be alright in her future? Her interest in fiction can get out of hand, and can't focus on the work she should do. Lisa wants to have a future where she can take care of herself, without relying on other people.
But for that, Lisa has to control herself. Which was gonna be hard because she liked that of herself.
Someone bumped into her shoulder but didn't stop or say anything. Lisa could shout to this guy, but she just ignored it. It wasn't like she got hurt.
However, that mind changed when she felt her pocket not finding her phone, but instead a card she didn't recognize.
Turned around Lisa could see her pocket thief. "Hej! Ge tillbaka min mobil!"
(Hey! Give back my cellphone!)
Running after her thief, Lisa saw they walked over the road and followed after. But her focus on them made her forget to be aware of the traffic, only to notice when a loud hunk from her right side. The car wasn't quick enough to stop and hit directly.
The impact left her motionless on the ground. Could hear people talking around her but didn't understand a single word they said.
Is she gonna die?
Breathing was getting harder, and her sight was getting more blurry. Before it went black, she saw someone facing her with a grin.
During the day, everyone who possessed a Millenium item could sense something has arrived. A small darkness could be felt, but has the same dark presence that no one has felt before for thousands of years!
How did it come, and why now?
Would the Millenium holders find this darkness before it's too late?
Lisa grunted from her slumber and felt the uncomfortable feeling of laying down. Slowly opening her eyes, or her eye, with her face laying on the floor. "What the?"
Bringing her head up, she saw she was in an empty room. "Where am I? How did I get here? Shouldn't I be dead?"
That's right! Lisa remembers being hit by a car and dying. But how is it she's still alive?
"Oh, great!" complained Lisa while standing up again. "I ended up in one of those reincarnated stories! Where did truck-sama send me to?"
When she turned around, she saw three stone tablets. They looked to be from Egypt, but they looked strange to her with the images of monsters. On one, there are maybe a dozen monsters that could fit into a game for children. The second one has two people, one with star-like hair, facing each other and two monsters above them (one being a dragon, and the other an astronaut if she could guess). But the third one made Lisa feel a bit uncomfortable.
The last tablet had an image of a huge demon head almost covering half the tablet but in the middle, there was a small figure.
What does that mean?
"Hey!" shouted someone from behind. Lisa raised both her hands not wanting to cause any trouble. Turning around, she saw a man in a uniform. "How did you get here? This exhibit is not open to visitors!"
"I-I don't know either how I got here," which you could say wasn't a lie.
"Got lost? Well, take the stairs up, and you would be back where you came from," he said, pointing at the stairs.
Not wanting to cause any conflict, Lisa gave a nod before going up. On the second floor, she saw objects that also came from Egypt and people view them. "A museum? Well, he did say 'exhibit'."
Lisa looked around to find the exit (and to see the exhibit) and shortly found the entrance door. Headed outside, she saw a park and high buildings. "Where the hell am I?"
After the classes were finished, Yugi together with his friends headed up to the school roof.
"Battle City!? You mean starting tomorrow, Domino City is going to be a Duel Monster tournament?!" asked Jounouchi.
"Yeah!" answered Yugi to his friend.
"Lots of tough duelists are already here," said Anzu, who was with Yugi when this came out to the public.
"That damn Kaiba!" exclaimed Jounouchi. Clearly annoyed he didn't hear about it directly too. "I finished up second in Duelist Kingdom, but he didn't tell me?! Unforgivable!"
"Jounouchi, are you planning to enter?" asked Honda.
"Of course! Why wouldn't I?"
Jounouchi turned back to the shortest one in the group. "Yugi, you're participating too, right?"
"Of course! But Battle City uses an ante rule, so we can't afford to lose."
"Ante? What's that?" asked Jounouchi. He hasn't played Duel Monster for very long, so he doesn't know all the rules yet.
"It means you're betting your card. The winner gets the card from the loser. And in the tournament, it has to be a rare card."
"What?! Does it have to be rare? But that means, if I lose, they are gonna take my Red-Eyes!" Jounouchi took out one card with a black dragon.
"You sure you wanna risk it? That card is your entire fortune," stated Honda out to his pal.
Jounouchi thought about it for a moment but gave out a smirk shortly. "Don't worry! Red-Eyes is my goddess of victory. All I have to do is keep winning. And then I'll get a bunch of rare cards!"
"Don't be too greedy!"
"Oh, there's one more thing you need to enter the tournament," remembering another statement from Kaiba's announcement. "You need a Duel Disk! Kaiba invented a new virtual card battle machine!"
"Duel Disk? We need one of those?" Jounouchi remembers when Kaiba showed them his prototype of a duel disk when they were in Duelist Kingdom. But not a very good memory for Jounouchi when Kaiba easily beat him.
"Our store doesn't carry it, but there are card shops that do."
"Alright! Then let's go get one!" already heading to the door. "And, Yugi. After we buy this thing, can we go to your place? I need your opinion on my new deck!"
"Sure!"
Everyone else followed after Jounouchi, but Yugi stayed behind to look out on the city. During class, he felt something wrong from the Millenium puzzle. His other self showed up in his spirit form next to Yugi. "You felt it too, partner?"
"Yeah, what was that?" asked Yugi.
"Don't know. But I have this feeling I have encountered it before." The other Yugi had a stern look while looking at the horizon.
"It seems more of your past start to show up."
"Looks like it. But I don't think anything good will come out from this."
"Ahhh! Where am I supposed to go?!" exclaimed Lisa, walking down the street. Some of the people gave her a weird look, but she didn't really care about it.
Lisa had walked for two hours but hadn't found anything that could help her. She did ask people where she was, but they either answered with Domino City, Japan, or just ignored her. Is it so weird a tourist asking about direction?!
But a realization hit Lisa "Vänta lite! De sa Japan, så varför pratar alla på engelska? Och när började jag prata på engelska? Är detta som i Doctor Who med direkt översättning in i huvudet?!"
(Wait a moment! They said Japan, so why is everyone speaking English? And when did I start to speak English? Is this like in Doctor Who with the direct translation into your head?!)
Every minute of this place makes it more confusing! Lisa wants to go back home! But she can't because she fucking died! Can't even try to call home because someone mugged her cellphone and replaced it with a card!
Pulling up the card from her pocket, it had an image of a blue man with long black hair and a leather outfit. "Well, he looks cool. That's for sure." But she still felt annoyed over it. Turned the card around to the backside, Lisa recognized it! It belonged to Yu-Gi-Oh!
She hasn't watched Yu-Gi-Oh! But she sure does remember the image. And when Lisa thinks about it, back in the museum with the star-haired person looked like the main character. Does that mean she ended up in an anime she never watched once!
"Tja, jag såg en scen. Men det kommer inte riktigt hjälpa mig!"
(Well, I saw a scene. But that won't really help me!)
Taking her eyes away from the card, she saw a shop sign, 'Trading Cards'. Should she go in? It's not like she can buy anything anyway, but maybe she can sell the card for some money?
Going inside, she was greeted with a "Welcome!" from the cash register. The shop looks harmless. Cards were on display and there were those small packages with cards. Can she sell a card in a shop? Coming up to the front desk, Lisa met with a man with a white apron, a yellow bandana, and round glasses. "Can I help you?"
"Yeah, hi. I'm not really sure how it works with these kinds of shops. But I have this card that I don't want to keep, and I'm wondering if I can sell it?" asked Lisa the cashier.
"Sure you can. If the card has some value for a trade, then you can earn a bit of money. But it's a bit unusual for someone to sell a card now when a Duel Monster tournament is taking place tomorrow." stated the cashier out.
"Well, I'm not from around here. It's the first time I heard of this tournament, and I don't really know how to play it."
"Okay, everyone has different interests. Can I see what card you have?" he reached out his hand for the card. Lisa gave him the card and when he saw it, a small glimmer of surprise was on his face. However, that vanished quickly before Lisa noticed it. "Well, this is a good card! But I can't promise you that you would get much out of it. I can keep it for you and see if someone would be interested to put it in their deck."
Lisa wrinkled her eyebrow and thought something was wrong. This guy gave her a bit of a red flag! Taking back the card from the cashier's hand "Okay, but I think I should ask other shops first."
"We're coming in!" said one guy out loud. Lisa turned around and saw four teenagers entering.
They all wore what Lisa would guess to be school uniforms. One of the guys had messy dirty-blond hair, another one had brown hair, only female in the group had brown, and the shortest one had a star-shaped hairdo with three different colors. He's the main character!
"Welcome! I'll be with you shortly!" said the cashier. Turning back to Lisa he asked, "Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I'm sure," and Lisa saw his face turned a bit annoyed.
"Are you done?" asked the blond one.
"Yeah, I'm done. Go on ahead," said Lisa, moving aside for them.
"Thanks," said the short one to her. Standing before the desk, he turned to the cashier. "Hello. Do you have the new Duel Disk?"
"You guys must be duelists who are entering tomorrow's tournament." The cashier turned around to where boxes laying on a bookcase. All of them had 'Duel Disk' on them. "I had a few customers like you and have a few left."
The cashier went to the computer monitor next to him and asked: "Can you tell me your name?"
"Mutou Yugi," answered the star-headed one.
Writing down the name, the cashier got a hit. "There you are! This looks great!"
"What do you mean?"
"I'm looking you up in the duelist database," Showing the screen to everyone There was a picture of someone who looked like Yugi, next to it was a card with a purple wizard, and underneath with big letters says 'LEVEL 8'. "Kaiba Corporation has collected information on duelists throughout the country. Such as duelist level and the number of rare cards. If you're at least level 5, I must give you a Duel Disk for free because you've qualified for the tournament."
That surprised everyone. "Kaiba-kun said that? So that's how he's selecting the participants."
"Yugi-kun, your duelist level is 8, which is the highest." Took one box and gave it to Yugi. "Congratulations! This is yours!"
'Kaiba?' Lisa thought, isn't he the super-rich guy rival in the anime? He must view Yugi in high regard to be that high.
Yugi thanked the cashier for getting the box, but then the blond one got in front of the desk. "Mister, I'm Jounouchi Katsuya!"
Putting in his name, he got a hit "You're a level 2 nobody. Wait, why did he put in 'nobody'?"
A small smile cracked out from Lisa's face but covered it from the other to see it. No respect whatsoever for this guy!
"WHAT?! A nobody?!" shouted Jounouchi out. "Kaiba, that asshole!"
The guy with brown hair came up to his friend from behind when Jounouchi threw hands all over the place. "Calm down!"
"I'm no nobody!"
Lisa got the feeling she would laugh out loud soon if she didn't leave. Didn't want to cause any conflicts with the main characters, she put away the card in her hand and left the store.
She can try to find another store, and hopefully, it would still be open.
Back in the shop when just when the other customer left, Honda held to Jounouchi. Jounouchi was a level 2 duelist, which is below the minimum to enter the tournament. "But that means…"
"You're automatically disqualified," stated Anzu.
"Why is the runner-up at Duelist Kingdom disqualified?!" yelled Jounouchi out.
While everyone tried to calm their friend down, the cashier took another look at Jounouchi's profile. And next to his picture was an image of a black dragon. Red-Eyes Black Dragon!
This level 2 duelist had a such powerful rare card?
While no one was looking, the cashier changed the level from '2' to '5'. "Oh my, I'm sorry! It was a computer error. You're actually level 5. You're qualified."
The group turned around with surprised faces and Jounouchi with a smile. "What? Really?!" Taking a look on the computer screen himself, Jounouchi saw his level was 5.
"Congratulation! Here you go," giving out another Duel Disk.
Jounouchi gladly took it. "Alright! I got one!"
"Good for you, Jounouchi-kun." said Yugi.
They all headed out and said goodbye. When the cashier was alone in the store, he grabbed the phone.
"It's me. I found our first prey."
