A/N: Hello again, folks! I'm updating again so soon. How exciting! I know the last Marv and Kate chapter I posted was questioned, but I'm hoping this chapter makes up for it. That last idea was done on a whim, and I was hoping it would add a bit of a twist to the story, but all it seemed to get was raised eyebrows. Anyway, hopefully, this makes up for it! :D In the meantime, let's go!
Chapter 35: The Drive Home III
Marv's PoV:
"Marv?" Nothing. "Marv!" I snap out of my thoughts. "Would you please watch the road?! I don't know what you're daydreaming about, but you're lucky nobody's on the road, or else, we would've crashed! It's amazing we didn't go into the ditch!" Kate's still pissed, since she's using her harsh "Mom" voice with me. She's right—I should be paying more attention to the road, not daydreaming about her stripping her clothes and throwing herself onto me.
"Sorry, Kate…" I mutter.
"What the hell were you thinking about, anyway?"
"Nothing. I'm just having one of those off days,"
"You're having one of those off days, alright…" she mutters under breath.
"I'm sorry it didn't work out between us. While looking for a relationship, I was blind to the fact that you, a woman, wouldn't feel safe about going to two guys' house. I don't know what I was thinking…"
"You're not the only one, who wasn't thinking clearly. I wanted something different, but this has gone too far. I'm trusting that you're taking me back home,"
"I may not have done a lot in my life, Kate, but I certainly wouldn't do anything to hurt someone. Though, you'd have to trust me on that,"
"I just don't know what to do…"
Even though I was terrified of that daydream I had, of Kate suddenly throwing herself at me, part of me wishes it would come true. I know Kate thinks I'm sick for asking about her having another kid with me.
"What exactly is it that you want?" I ask her.
"I don't know. Like I said, I don't know. I love Peter, but I'm bored with him. Having four kids isn't exactly my idea of fun," Kate gives me the side eye. "But, having a kid with someone else is definitely out of the question," She faces forward again. "A sexual affair sounds nice, but no more kids. But, at the same time, I couldn't do that to Peter. Though, I kinda have already been seeing someone else, you, behind his back…"
"You're just conflicted, aren't you?"
"You could say that,"
"Question,"
She looks at me and says, "What?"
"Why are you still confiding in me about this stuff? After all, you think I'm sick for the suggestion I made earlier, and you're not exactly trusting of me right now. So, why talk to me about this?"
"I don't know. I just feel like getting this out to someone. It's not like I can talk to Peter about it, right?"
"What about Counseling?" I suggest.
"No… I don't know. Counseling will only suggest how to spice up things with my husband,"
"What's wrong with that? It's better than committing adults,"
"'Adults'?"
"Yeah. You know, cheating…"
"You mean 'adultery'?"
"Yeah, that," Man, I'm terrible with words…
She shakes her head, likely at my stupidity, before replying, "True, but I wish I was allowed to be with another man, while married. You know what I mean?"
"I'm sure that's OK in some religions," I look in my side mirror at the upcoming truck behind us.
"But, it's not OK in my religion. I was baptised Catholic, after all, but I'm not a practicing one," I nod. "I just don't know what to do, Marv…"
"Have you tried talking to Peter? Maybe see about taking a break for awhile, and see how you feel?"
"No… I mean, no, I haven't thought of it, but what will he say? What if I miss him, if we separate?"
"It's just a suggestion," I shrug. "I don't know what else to tell you. You can either commit adult… adultery, or continue on with the same thing in your marriage. Either way, you're not going to be happy, and you're not going to like the outcome." Sometimes, I'm surprised by the words that come from my mouth, despite how I seem to have trouble with the word "adultery", among a few others.
"I guess I'm just a messed up case, aren't I?"
"This is why I suggest Counseling. You never know, you might find the unexpected answer you're looking for there,"
Even though I'm watching the road, I can tell Kate's looking at me. "You know, you're very insightful, Marv. I'll have to talk to my husband about that, and see what he says,"
"That's all you can do," The city of Chicago is up ahead. "It looks like we're almost to the city now. You'll be home, before you know it, Kate." The rest of the drive into the city is a silent one…
To be Continued…
…
A/N: Thanks again! Like I said above, I hope this chapter makes up for the previous Marv and Kate chapter! :D If you haven't already seen the previous Marv and Kevin chapter, please check it out! I'm hoping to update this story soon, which will be a Marv and Kevin chapter next. For now, take care! Stay home. Stay safe. :)
