Piper McLean's Pov:

Famous. Why did my dad have to be famous? Couldn't it be my distant uncle or something? 17 years ago my father made a video that went viral and scored him a free trip to the Capitol. There he met my mom, and they had me. I spent the first ten years of my life in the Capitol, bouncing around boarding schools. I tried and failed to get my dad's attention by being extraordinary, so I learned that the only way to get him to notice me was to get in trouble. So I did. I got in trouble so much, that on my tenth birthday, I got sent back to District 10 where my dad grew up. I can only come back and visit him a few weeks a year.

What happened to my mom? Well, as soon as I was born, she took off. My dad keeps trying to find her, but she seems to have disappeared from the Capitol.

No one in District 10 knows that my dad is famous. All they know is that I live with a foster dad. Even when I'm away from the capitol, every little detail of my life is planned out. The only thing that wasn't planned was me entering the Hunger Games. That is all mine. When I was 12 my dad tried to fight it, but I told him to forget it. What are the chances that I'll get chosen anyway? Now, it's the only real thing that I have in common with anyone my age.

Now it's reaping day, and I can't fight the feeling that I'm going to get picked. I know that since I only have my name in 5 times I'll probably be fine. Lots of other kids have their names in several times the number that I do, but I've learned to trust my gut. I know that I'm going to be picked today.

Supposedly, I could be really pretty If I tried, but I really don't put much into my appearance. I cut my own hair and purposefully make it several different lengths. I don't bother to wash my face, but I never have acne. I usually just wear whatever is most comfortable, so today I'm wearing ripped jeans, a white T-shirt, and a green winter jacket. I know that we're supposed to dress up for the reaping, but I rarely do what I'm supposed to do.

My foster dad is a burly coach who would be terrifying if he was taller than 5'0". I trudged out of my room and found him in front of our small TV watching Hunger Games reruns.

"Get him! There you go! Now, slit his neck!" Coach yelled. He loves the Hunger Games, and has been trying to get me to volunteer since before I could even put my name in. I tried to tell him that that wasn't allowed, but he never listens to me. Just then, he noticed me.

"McLean! Come over here!"

"Yeah, Coach Hedge?" I replied.

"Do you remember what you're going to do today?"

Just to humor him, I said, "I'm probably going to volunteer for the Hunger Games."

"That's my girl!" He turned back to the TV. It always made me uncomfortable when he said that, because I had never considered him my dad. He was just the guy that I lived with when I wasn't with my real dad.

"Come on Coach, we're going to be late if we don't go now," I reminded him.

"Oh! Right!"

Coach jumped up and bounded out the door. I followed at a much less cheerful pace. By the time we got to the town square, everyone was already in place. I cursed under my breath and jogged into my spot in the 15th row. The escort said a speech, but I wasn't paying enough attention to register any of what she was saying.

"Now, let's choose our lady." The escort was fancy like that and always called the girls ladies and the boys gentlemen. It was pretty ironic, because most everyone in District 10 shoveled manure daily. After swirling her hand around in the bowl for a moment, the escort chose a name.

"Piper Mclean,"

I knew that I was going to get chosen, but it still felt unreal as I walked up to the stage. The only sound that registered in my head was Coach Hedge yelling "YEAH! PIPER'S GOING TO DOMINATE!"

I tried a weak smile. The escort glided to the other bowl and plucked another slip of paper out.

"Grover Underwood,"

I knew him. He was one of the only people at school that had ever talked to me without making fun of me. It was a shame that he had to die alongside me.
