Bonesborough

Eda flew through the alleyways. From time to time she glanced over her shoulder. She was still being chased. Behind her were the vilest creatures one could imagine: Gnomes. On the other side of the night market, Luz and King were fleeing from a large raid of guards. That night, chaos reigned in Bonesborough. Merchants of all kinds were running. Those who did not escape either fought against the law or against each other.

―Oh, Luz, you should be watching this ―said King, who, going inside the girl's hood, looked euphorically at the scenery. She, on the other hand, was just concentrating on running.

A great confrontation was taking place. Tooth fairies were flying everywhere biting whoever was in front of them. Eyes the size of chariots were charging against the others. A group of lizard men fought with their fists against what appeared to be blue flamingos. The Emperor's Coven guards were rushing back and forth trying to suppress the savage brawl that was going on.

Luz was trying to find a way to flee. To her left, a sweet old lady was hitting a huge cyclops in the face with her cane. To her right, a wizard was conjuring a dozen walking venus flytraps. Behind her were the guards. In front of her, a squalid little elf who, making use of a Construction Coven power glyph, was hoisting a pile of men into the air while shouting "Meet your destroyer!".

―What's going on, King? Everyone went crazy ―shouted the human, but her furry friend just laughed, enjoying the show.

―This is not as rare as you think, Luz. It happens from time to time.

―And how many of those times is this chaos caused by Eda? ―asked the young woman without stopping running.

King, after a few seconds' thought, replied:

―More than you'd like to know. Oh, look at that guy! Poor guy, he won't be able to use that leg again for quite a while.

Luz, who was able to stop behind some barrels for a few seconds, asked gasping for air:

―Where is Eda, anyway?

Suddenly, emerging in the distance from where the two were standing, a gigantic winged dragon flew high into the sky and, with an icy breath, began to freeze everything around it. What the heck is that?, shouted Luz. King laughed and looked at it in awe. This just keeps getting better and better! Back at the Owl Lady's location, the gnomes, once her pursuers and now fleeing in panic, screamed in terror. The witch, who gazed thoughtfully at the large albino dragon lying above her, commented:

―I must admit. Even I think I went a little overboard with that last spell...

Two hours before that, at the Owl House, Luz was rereading the third volume of Azura inside her room when her mentor peeked through the door frame.

―Hey, girl, King and I are going to go quickly to the night market, do you want to join us?

―The night market? ―The girl closed her book―. I don't know, Eda, isn't that place supposed to be illegal and dangerous?

―Exactly! ―The witch replied with a big smile on her face but, noticing her apprentice's hesitation, continued―. But don't worry, kiddo. I just have to go buy some runes from some guys and that's it. It's a round trip. Besides, you could use some air.

After a few moments of thought, the human agreed.

―That's how I like it! That's the Luz I know! You'll see that nothing bad will happen. And if anything does happen, you're with me, child, the Owl Lady ―she commented as she fluttered the girl's hair with the palm of her hand―. What's the worst that could happen?

The Bonesborough marketplace, amid flames and ice, was hosting one of the biggest fights it had seen in years. Even with that colossal dragon flying overhead, people were not stopping. The constant exchange of punches continued.

Eda, who had been searching for her friends through the air riding her staff, finally found them. She descended and, once she was with them, Luz approached her upset.

―Don't worry, it's a round trip. Nothing bad is going to happen ―the human mimicked her sarcastically―. Have you seen everything around you, Eda? Why did you have to steal that amulet from the gnomes?

―You don't understand, Luz. Do you think I did it on purpose? But I couldn't help it, child. It was so bright ―replied the teacher with her pupils fully dilated.

―Eda! ―The girl could have continued complaining, but was interrupted by the witch in the crimson dress.

―Relax, Luz. This will last a few more minutes at most. Just watch.

And just as she proclaimed, it happened. The arduous battle that was going on between all the merchants and purchasers in the night market came to a sudden halt. Now, holding hands, they stood up and helped each other. Those who a few moments ago were fighting fiercely were now embracing and laughing fraternally. Some mages put out the fire in the place while others focused on melting the ice. Eda then opened a large portal in the sky, which the icy dragon crossed to leave the scene. As some merchants picked up the debris and put away their stalls, others, having finished their cleanup work in the square, walked back to their homes.

―Hey, how about we go get a pint of apple blood before we go?

―I can't, man, I have to get home to tidy up the house and make breakfast for the kids.

―I still have time, count me in!

―Did anyone see my arm? I always drop the damn thing.

Luz, dumbfounded by what was happening in front of her, gawked at Eda and the people in the night market over and over again. As hard as she tried, she could not understand what had happened.

―Well, I already have my runes and a shiny amulet ―said the witch, satisfied―. I think it's time for us to go back home.

So Luz, Eda and King began to take the road to the Owl House. The girl was lost in her thoughts, reviewing everything that happened in the last hour of that night. Still entangled in her thoughts, she noticed, while crossing the remains of a collapsed book store, what she thought was one of Azura's tomes. Covered in dirt and leaves, the object seemed to have been there, waiting for her to see it. Luz approached it.

«This is...». She picked it up from the floor. It was then that she distinguished on the cover not a drawing of Azura, but that of a little white witch who, dressed in the attire of the fantasy heroine, proudly raised her staff.

«Amity's diary! How did it get here?».

Obfuscated, she stuffed the journal into her suitcase, where she also carried some glyphs, a notebook and some food for King. Seeing that her two friends had moved on, not noticing that she had strayed a little off the path, she began to jog to catch up with them.

―Eda ―spoke the confused girl as she stood next to them again―, tell me, what happened tonight?

The human longed for some answer, something to help her understand. However, Eda, who only laughed as the trio of friends walked back to Owl House, answered:

―Forget it, Luz. It's Bonesborough.
