WARNING: Infinity War spoilers from here on in.
Eva liked it when she was working the late shift at the coffee shop. It was quiet, she could play Tchaikovsky over the sound system, and sometimes she got to close up early. Cleaning up was oddly soothing, too. It was just enough physical activity to stop her mind from wandering too much. Tonight she was thinking about urban forestry while wiping dried-up mug rings from the wood-effect tables, grateful for the quiet at last.
There had been a lot of commotion earlier that day; something to do with a spaceship materialising over Brooklyn and a super-powered fight wrecking half of Williamsburg. They had been playing news updates on the radio all day, which Eva hadn't bothered to listen to. Vision wasn't involved, having been visiting Wanda in Scotland, so it wasn't like he was going to get hurt or anything. She wondered why people did care so much. It was just superheroes.
She was just about to lock up when the tacky round-dial phone Mr G had bought for the aesthetic starting ringing shrilly. She scowled at it as she walked over. It was probably her boss, telling her they were opening late for some dumb reason again. "Hello?"
"Eva?" It was Rhodey on the other end of the line. "Don't suppose you feel like doing a delivery?"
"C'mon, man," she sighed. "They've set up blockades all around the city after the attack this afternoon. There's no way I'm getting to you before sunrise."
"I can send you a security pass on your cellphone," Rhodey said. "Just get over here as quick as you can, alright? I'll tip big."
"Fine, fine. Tell me the order and I'll start it now," she said, grabbing a notepad and pen. There were a few requests in there that she hadn't seen in a good couple of years. "Crap, Rhodes," she said. "You really are getting the gang back together, huh?"
"Yeah. See you in an hour."
"I'll have to break some speed limits to get there that fast."
"We'll pay for your lawyer, don't worry."
"Whatever." She hung up and grabbed an armful of mugs, carrying them over to the coffee machine. It didn't look like she would be getting to finish her shift early, tonight.
A/N "what a tiny chapter," you may be thinking. And you are correct. But worry not! Because the next chapter is BIG, and you won't have to wait too long for it. I just wanted there to be a beat between this scene and the next. And yes, we are in Infinity War timeline now. I finally psyched myself up to it. I haven't cried yet, but I'm sure it'll happen.
