Chapter 1: The Day Where It All Fell Into Place
Today has been the worst day of my life. Midterms for my high school are coming up in just a week, so I've been swamped with studying. I just got laid off from my job at a plant nursery because of budget cuts. I loved that job. Being in nature made me feel at home. Now I'm driving home from my last shift, and I'm doing everything but paying attention to the road. I'm doing everything I can to keep the tears from falling. As a seventeen year old senior, who has not yet turned eighteen, this has been a very stressful day. All I need is something horrible to top it off.
Driving through the roads in my neighborhood, I notice how quiet it is. I turn left, away from my house. I need to let the tears dissipate before I get home and dad asks what's wrong. Yeah, dad and sister, as mom had passed away when Miranda was born. Miranda is my younger sister by two years, and I love her so much! She is the best thing that happened since mom died. She is so sweet, and I don't know what I would do without her. My tears start falling as I am reminded by how lucky I am to have such a wonderful sister, even if she does annoy me sometimes.
Not paying attention to what I'm doing, I go over the twenty-five mile per hour speed limit by ten. I notice just as I see a kid cross the street in front of me. I put my foot on the break just in time so I didn't knock him over at 30 miles an hour. I slam my foot down, causing my big truck to halt to a stop.
"Oh gods!" I yell as I rip my seatbelt off and climb out of the car. I hurry over to the boy who I hit. He looks to be around my age with curly brown hair and a long, lanky body. At the moment, he is moaning and clutching his right arm and side, as it was the side he had been hit on. That I hit him on. Oh gods, I am going to be in so much trouble. The tears come back full force. His eyes are clenched shut.
"Oh my gods! Are you okay? I mean, I just hit you, of course you're not okay!" I say to no one in particular. The kid still moaned, but I could hear him cursing under his breath. "Uhh. Can I call someone for you? A mom, dad or sibling?" I ask quickly. "Wait, first can you tell me your name?"
"Traaviiss." he moans, his voice rich and deep. Why does that name sound familiar?
"Okay Travis, is there anyone I can call for you or do you just want me to take you to the hospital?" I say frantically. His arm definitely looks broken, it's twisted at an odd angle. Who knows, I might have given him a concussion or maybe some other type of brain damage.
"You know what, I'm just gonna take you to the hospital. We can call your family once we know what's happened to you. Can you sit up or something?" I ask. He nods his head and then grabs it with his hands. Yeah, that's a concussion Katie, way to go. He sits up and groans again.
"You know what, I'm gonna help you stand up." I grab him under his arms and tug him up. I don't know how I did it. I'm only used to carrying plants and trees, not boulders. Well at least he smells good. Shut up Katie, this is not the time to think about how the guy smells, he most likely has a broken arm. I finally get him to a standing position. His eyes are still closed and he holds his arm close to him. He takes a sharp intake of breath and winces in pain.
"It hurts to breathe." he says raspily. Mental forehead smack. I probably gave him broken ribs too.
"Can you open your eyes?" I ask. I take my phone light and shine it on his face. He opens his eyes, and what startles me is not the fact that he has the telltale concussion sign, but that his eyes are such a startling bright blue. Like the blue of the sky on a sunny day. The blue eyes fit with his curly brown hair and angular face. Ugh, Katie, why'd you have to hit a cute guy? Katie, it's not the time to think of that! The two sides of my brain are always warring, it's quite confusing. Back to the concussion, his pupils are huge, and one is larger than the other. I remember that dad said this is what it looked like when I got my concussion in seventh grade. I fell off the monkey bars I loved playing on. Haven't gone on them since, sadly. Dad's also an EMT and a paramedic, so he taught us what to look for. He's a weirdo though, cause he likes to have plants. Though I think that is because of my mom, who loved it too. He wants to keep her memory, and that is why I spent so much time at the plant nursery before I worked there. I even used to read and do my homework there.
"Um Travis, let's get you into the truck okay?" He grunts in response. I help him over to the truck and open the passenger door. The Ford F150 is tall, so I don't know how he's gonna get up there. Suddenly, he just hops up in the truck and moans loudly once he's seated. That was a brave move. I go around and make sure he didn't lose anything from his pockets and then hop in the driver's side. I shoot a quick text to my dad that I'm gonna be home late. Or at a sleepover. I'll figure that out while Travis is getting checked. I start heading to the hospital.
"So, I should probably tell you that my name is Katie, and I am so so sorry for hitting you! I did not see you, I wasn't paying attention." I own up to my mistake with no excuses. I hear him clear his throat, and then he speaks an actual sentence.
"Nice to meet ya, Katie-kat. And yes, I know I'm already giving you a nickname, but you hit me so I get to call you what I want." I stop at a light and turn to look at him. Even though he's in pain, I can tell there's a light to his eyes. A light that signifies a jokester. A prankster. Whatever you wanna call it. Even a flirt. And he just said that even after I hit him. I stare open mouthed. Great, he's that type of guy. I roll my eyes. The light turns green.
"Whatever." I mutter.
"Hey. That's no way to speak to someone who you just injured. If you keep that up I might just have to sue ya." he says. This time you can really hear the joking in his voice.
"Okay okay. Do you have anyone you can call, to let them know what happened?" I ask. I always make sure to stay on task. This task is to get him to the hospital, do whatever needs to happen for me hitting him, and leave. Nothing else.
"I have one person, my brother Connor. He's a year younger than me, but he got his license right away. He might be able to come and pick me up." A Travis and a Connor. The names are really familiar. I don't think about it though.
"You must be feeling better, you're sure talking more. And okay, but no parents?" I ask.
"Yeah, I feel a bit better but the ribs still hurt and the arm is throbbing. My head isn't too bad anymore. Yeah, I have a mom. My dad left us when Connor and I were young."
"Oh. My mom died when me and my sister were young. How about your mom? Won't she be worried?" He shakes his head slowly.
"She's not having the best time of her life right now. I don't want to make things difficult."
"Mmm." I acknowledge.
The rest of the ride was quiet. After about an hour of waiting, a nurse calls us into a room where the doctor is waiting.
"Hi there, I am Doctor Samberly. I am going to ask you some questions about everything, okay? First tell me your name and age." Travis makes a face as he thinks, it probably hurts to think. I'm surprised the doctor hasn't said something about his blown up pupils.
"My name is Travis Stoll, and I am an 18 year old senior at Midtown High." That's where the familiar names are from. He goes to my high school, and I used to make mud pies with him and his brother at the park when we were 10! Then, after I went through such hard work to make them, they would pick them up and throw them at me! Of course I threw some back at them too, so I always came back to my house covered in mud. Funny thing is, I hear about his brother a lot. Miranda really likes Connor.
"Okay, thank you Travis. I know you got hit by a car," I swallow nervously, "and your arm is quite obviously injured, but are there any other places that hurt?" Doctor Samberly asks. Travis looks like he's about to speak but I take the time to share my opinion.
"I noticed he has a concussion, as his pupils are huge and he said his head hurt earlier. He also said that it hurts to breathe, so I figured some bruised or broken ribs." I state clearly. I always like to show off my knowledge when I can, especially when it comes to doctors. My dad is always talking about medical stuff, so I picked up a lot from him. The doctor raises his eyebrows and Travis glares at me, though he winces as he does it so it's not even half effective.
"Ah, good assessment. Are you in medical school?"
"No, my dad is a paramedic, and he spouts medical information all the time. I think this is the main hospital he takes patients to also."
"Oh, what's his name? I know quite a few of the paramedics who come here, especially the talkative ones." Oh yea, dad is very talkative.
"Matthew Gardner."
"Oh yes! You must be Katie. He always mentioned how you were smart and would make a good doctor." I blush. Dad has been trying to get me to apply to medical schools, which just adds another stress to my already full stress bin. "So who are you to Travis? Are you his girlfriend?"
"No!" Travis and I shout at the same time.
"Sorry, no we are not. I umm, I was the one who hit him." An appalled look comes over Dr. Samberly's face.
"Oh, you did? Is everything okay? Matthew said that sometimes you get unfocused when you are stressed." I am so talking to dad about information he shares about me and Miranda when I get home. Travis is taking this all in with interest.
"Umm, yeah. Midterms have been coming up and I just got fired from my job. Everything is great. Now back to Travis. I can go see my counselor if I need to." I say gruffly. I hate talking about feelings, so I probably won't go and see her.
"Okay, but you should go see the counselor. Alright Travis, we should take some x-rays. But first I should check out the ribs, to see if they are really broken and to assess damage." Travis nods. "I'm gonna ask you to take your shirt off, just so I can see it clearly. Do you mind if she stays in here? I want to talk to her about her dad while you get your x-rays." Travis looks over at me smugly. Crap, that means bad news. I remember that look from playing at the park.
"No, no I don't mind. If she doesn't mind…" he trails off, eyebrow raised tauntingly. I try not to blush and shake my head. Travis slowly takes off his jacket to reveal a blue t-shirt that brings out his eyes. Eyes that are still on me. Geez, why does he have to look at me like that. I look down at the ground, trying to avoid the gaze that makes it seem like it's an intimate moment. I shudder a little in my chair and push the thought to the back of my head. I must remain calm and collected. Dr. Samberly helps Travis take off his shirt, carefully, so as not to hurt his arm. Still looking away, I hear the doctor whistle.
"That's some pretty bad bruising, it really could be broken." I look up to see a shirtless Travis, with a giant bruise right under his left peck. Oh my gosh he's so… ugh. In the dark, I couldn't see that he had a good build. But now in the light, wow. With muscular broad shoulders, defined abs and biceps, he would be the envy of every guy at a pool party, and he obviously knew that. Now it makes sense why he weighed as much as a boulder. He looks up from the bruise to see me watching him and he smirks. I look down, blushing furiously. I am not usually one to look at guys like this, but I don't really have anything else to do except worry about everything. And I try not to do that. I hear Travis groan and look up to see Dr. Samberly gently touching the bruise.
"Yeah, we'll have to get this checked out too. I am gonna be right back to talk to you Katie, and I will send a nurse in to help Travis get ready for the x-ray and CT scan, for the concussion." says Dr. Samberly. Then he stands up and leaves the room. Travis puts on his jacket and groans as he slumps down on the bed.
"So, Travis Stoll. How have you been since 5th grade? Do you remember me?"
"Yes, Katie-kat. I am doing great. Of course I remember you. I recognized you when you hit me, I just was surprised to see you all grown up." he says with a slight smirk. "That's why I said your nickname too, by the way."
"Hmm, makes sense. Still, how come I haven't even seen you since then? After that summer, I never even saw you in school!"
"Yah, my mom sent me and Conner to an all boys school for middle school. Don't know why, but she did. Then high school started and I did see you, but I was too shy cause I wasn't used to being around girls and stuff an-"
"Wait, you? Shy? Hahaha I can't believe it!" I laugh sarcastically. He blushes a bit and mumbles something along the lines of, 'Well I thought you were pretty, so I was scared.' Thought? Yeah. You do look kinda haggard, especially after studying and getting laid off. Oh shut it. "That still doesn't explain why I haven't seen you though."
"Well, that doctor said you're smart, right?" I nod. "Well, I'm guessing you have honors classes while I'm just in regular ones. Well, most. And I have changed quite a bit since 5th grade, as I'm sure you can tell now, which is another reason you might not have seen me." I blush for like the 5th time in the past two hours. "Though I am taking honors calculus this year with you. You always sit in the front so you never saw me." Wait what?
"You are in honors calculus?" I ask, astounded.
"Well, yeah. To pull off good pranks you've got to be good with math, all the angles and stuff for trajectory, so yeah. I am in a high math class." he says proudly. "And I was in honors chemistry sophomore year too, also in the same class as you. Oh and Katie, close your mouth. It's not very attractive." I immediately shut my mouth. Wait, I don't care what's attractive or not to him. He looks up at a cabinet with an eyebrow raised and a slight smirk. Oh, if he is doing this to get on my nerves like he did when we were younger, he is gonna- Suddenly the door opens and Dr. Samberly comes in with a nurse.
"Alright Mr. Stoll, this is nurse Emily and she's gonna take you to get the x-rays. Miss Gardner, might I stay so we can talk?" I nod. Travis and the nurse leave the room. "Okay, so you seem a bit stressed. You can tell me about it if you want."
"First things first, how close are you with my dad? Why does he share all this information about me to you and I not even know who you are?" Dr. Samberly looks at the floor for a second, figuring out how to word things.
"Your dad and I are old college buddies. We both took some classes that had to do with EMT work, it's just that I went on to be a doctor. We were partners in the classes and so we just became friends. We didn't talk much after that because I went off to become a doctor at a fancy school up north, but when I saw your dad walk into the ER on my first week, I just had to go and say hi. So we just kept that friendship going from where it left off." Wow, how had I never come to that possibility.
"Oh, that's cool. So yeah." feeling I can trust the guy, I take a deep breath and keep talking. "I got fired from my job today, so I was extra sad. I have had a lot of schoolwork to do for midterms and I just got fired from my job today, cause they're doing budget cuts, so I have been really stressed lately. It's all just been really hard, ever since my mom died a few years ago. I was a freshman."
"I'm so sorry Katie. I know you probably get this a lot, but I really am. Your dad always spoke highly of her, so it must have been really hard." I nod solemnly. "You don't have to see the counselor if you don't want to, but I would really recommend it." I nod again. The door opens and Travis comes back in.
"I'll be back with the x-rays momentarily." Then Doctor Samberly gets up and leaves the room.
"So… Are you paying for this? Since you hit me? Or should we do half and half? Since I also wasn't paying attention to where I was going."
"Travis, it's okay. I'll take care of it. It was basically my fault. I have some money saved up anyway…" I trail off. I don't want to explain that the money is for college, but I don't even know what I want to do yet, so I don't say anything.
"Are you sure Katie-kat?" I nod. "Alright, then at least let me take you for ice cream or something once I feel better." I start shaking my head in indignation but he puts his hand up. "I'm not taking no for an answer. I am taking you out for ice cream, after school next week. Friday. No buts."
"Okayyy." I say like a sad little kid who doesn't get ice cream when they want it. He nods. Doctor Samberly comes back in. He ushers me out so I can go and pay for my damage caused, and then I get to take Travis home. We don't talk much in the car. They wrapped his ribs pretty tight. I drop him off, and he turns to look at me before he closes the door.
"Really Katie-kat. Thanks for taking care of me after all this time." I give him a weak smile and he shuts the door. Now I have to go home and tell my dad why I had to spend two thousand dollars at the hospital and why I was out till eleven at night. Yayyy.
First chapter is up! I still haven't fully decided on a title, so it will probably change as I write to fit the story better. I do have everything planned out, it's just a matter of me writing it all on time. I hope to post at least once a month, so this will be slow. I have a month of break for Christmas though, so I may have a few chapters up next month. I really hoped this is an interesting story. Reviews and constructive criticism are very welcome! ~kalisfandomstories1004
