Chapter 4: The Day(s) They Make More Memories?
Katie's POV
We finally finished our twenty questions game by today, Friday. We got off topic a lot more than Monday, and surprisingly, it was fun. By Thursday, I was looking forward to one of my favorite parts of the day, the time when Travis could make me laugh. The thing that surprised me most was that Travis kept coming back each day, not that I didn't like it. He made my horrible school days go much better. We still don't talk during math that much, but I see him doodle in a notebook during class all the time. It's amazing that he still gets good grades in class. Anyway, since today is Friday, that means we have our movie night. Starting at 7. I asked Travis to get Connor to come as well, and he asked that Miranda was there so he knew someone besides his brother. I drove Miranda home and she started setting up the basement for the movie while I made snacks.
"Hey Katie," Miranda calls as I pull a tray of cookies out of the oven.
"What?" I yell back.
"Can I take down your blanket fort?"
"NOOO! Don't take that down!" I set the tray on the counter and rush downstairs. "Don't take it apart! It's my best one yet!"
"But we need blankets for the movie!"
"Then we'll grab some from upstairs, we don't need a ton! This is my reading fort, and I can't bear to see it taken down, okay?"
"O-kay. Hey, are you gonna wear that when they're here?" she asks. I look down at what I'm wearing: white and grey speckled joggers, a long sleeved blue shirt, and fuzzy socks.
"What's wrong with this? It's a movie night, I'm supposed to be comfortable."
"Suit yourself." Then she heads upstairs. I fix the blanket she almost pulled off the top of my fort and head back upstairs to pop popcorn. As Miranda comes back down from her room, she grabs a cookie off the tray I pulled out of the oven a few minutes earlier.
"Hey! Those are for later!"
"But it's grandma's recipe, I can't help myself!" I roll my eyes and nod in agreement. Since our dad is a firefighter, he has to stay at the station overnight every two days, so his mom came over to watch us when we were younger. We still see her either every Saturday or Sunday at family dinners when my dad is off. She taught us how to cook and bake all kinds of things when she came over, but my favorite recipe of hers is her crunch gooey chocolate chip cookies. Crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. Kind of like Travis. You know, I'm kind of starting to agree with your thoughts on that subject… nah, never mind. I'm not. Speaking, or thinking of Travis, there is now. I run to the front door before he rings the doorbell off the wall.
"Geez, do you really have to ring it that many times, Travis?" I ask annoyedly as I open the door. I find Travis decked out in black joggers and a blue t-shirt, the same blue one he wore the day I hit him. Ha Miranda, I told you it's a comfy day. She's wearing jeans and a sweater. Travis points to Connor. Who is actually the one standing next to the doorbell. Connor is also dressed similar to Travis.
"Sorry. Come on in. We've got some snacks in the kitchen and then the basement is all set up for the movie! We also have some games set out if you want to play those too." I welcome them in with a wave of my arm.
"Sounds good Katie-kat!" Connor rolls his eyes at that. They take their stuff, and by that, I literally don't know what they have in their backpacks, or what they have backpacks with them for, down to the basement.
"Hey Kates, is that a blanket fort?" asks Travis. I nod cautiously. Uh oh, something is about to happen. He has that mischievous glint in his blue eyes. "It would be a shame if someone were to, well, jump on it!" He smiles evilly before falling on all the blankets and pillows that made the fort.
"No, TRAVIS! Ughhhh! That was my best blanket fort! I read in there!" He snuggles deeper in the blankets and sighs.
"I think I might just stay here, it's actually quite comfy. Though it would be more comfy if someone were to join me." He raises an eyebrow. I roll my eyes.
"Nuh uh, I'm sitting on the couch. Or the floor, as it looks like Connor and Miranda have called it already." I look over to see them talking animatedly to each other. I clap my hands together and everyone turns to me. "Alright, so we have games, snacks, and then the movie, how's that sound?" I hear mumbles of 'that's good' and I go to the game closet and open it. "Alright then, what do you all want to play?"
Two arguments later, we decide on the game of life. "The electronic version!" Travis had said excitedly. It was actually pretty fun, and so far I have the most kids, a husband, and a house. Travis isn't far behind, but he didn't get married. Miranda and Connor got the sucky jobs so they are a bit behind.
A while later, Connor and Miranda manage to catch up, and we are all rounding the last bend to reach the end of the game, and retirement meadows or something. About 4 or five spaces ahead of us all. Before Travis goes his turn, he pauses and looks at everyone.
"I say we make a bet. The first person who makes it to retirement gets the couch during the movie, and everyone else has to lay on the floor."
"Not fair!" I say. "That couch fits six people, actually, that's a good idea Travis." I have a feeling I'm going to win, as I have been getting some high numbers when it's my turn to spin. He looks over to Connor and Miranda.
"Fine with me." says Connor.
"I don't know Katie."
"Pwease Randa? For me?" I give her my best puppy dog eyes.
"Fine, but if you win will you share?"
"With you, sure!"
"Alright you two, it's my turn to go, so watch yourselves lose that couch!" He spun and got a three. The confident look fell, it was hilarious!
"No!" he yelled. I spun quickly and got a six. I win. I win!
"Yes yes yes yes!" I jump up and spin around. "You have to sit on the floo- oor!" I say in a sing-song voice. "Connor and Miranda, you can sit on the couch." Travis' face falls even more. Connor and Miranda go upstairs to get the snacks.
"But that's not fair!"
"Yeah, and I thought the same thing before we agreed, so it is fair."
"How is that fair?"
"I don't know, it just is!" I yell back. I wait a few moments before giving in to a sad faced Travis.
"Okay, fine, you can sit with us on the couch." His face lights up.
"Yay! I'm going to get some snacks now, wanna come?" I nod and we go upstairs.
We grabbed the snacks we wanted and settled down on the couch to start the movie. I turned off the lights to give it the movie theatre atmosphere. Connor took one end and of course Miranda had to sit next to him. So I was stuck next to Travis. Not that that is a bad thing. I really hope I don't cry, this is gonna be so awkward. Then my eyes widen. Oh geez, I forgot about the scene. The one where they, well, you know. That's gonna be very awkward to watch with two boys. My dad asked if he could read the reviews before letting us watch it. He told me there was a scene but it didn't have anything too compromising to my innocent, not so innocent, thoughts. So he's letting us watch it. He was also okay with us inviting the boys over, which is also a bit weird, but I'm happy he was okay with it. "Just no shenanigans, Katie." And that was it.
About halfway into the movie I had teary eyes like twice. But really, it's so sad. And seeing everything on the screen just makes it more sad than the book. Scratch that, the book was sadder cause we read Hazel's thoughts. The scene wasn't as bad as I thought it was, but it was still awkward. Especially when I looked away and found Travis also looking away awkwardly. He stared into my eyes for a moment before looking back at the screen.
Right now we're in the last 30 minutes of the movie and I'm holding my blanket close to my face in one hand in case I needed to bury my face in it. I hear sniffles from Travis and Miranda, and I look over to see Connor a little teary too. Not really crying like the rest of us, but I can see him trying to keep it all in. Then comes the saddest part. The last 25 minutes of the movie. I look over to find Miranda sobbing on Connors shirt while he awkwardly rubs her back, still trying to keep it in. As I quietly cry into my blanket, I feel Travis reach for my hand and give it a squeeze. I look over to see him sniffling violently with his face in his blanket. He reached for my hand without even looking. My heart kind of flutters to see that boys can be soft too. It's kinda cute even. No, it's really cute, actually.
After the movie finishes, we just sit there awhile trying to calm ourselves down. Travis is still stuck in his blanket. He is taking this really hard. I still can't believe I did this to all of us. I don't think any of us were at the point in our friendship where we were comfortable enough to cry in front of each other. I let go of his hand and reach over to gently rub his back. I look back to Miranda and see that she has fallen asleep on Connor. It's almost ten, so they should probably go soon. Maybe. I don't know if I want them to yet..
"Hey Connor, can you take Miranda upstairs to her room? Her name is on her door." She better thank me for this later. I hope he asks her out soon, I can tell he likes her too, especially since he let her cry on him. His response was a flushed nod. New it. He does like her. He picks her up bridal style and carries her up the stairs. I turn around from watching the boy of my sister's dreams carry her up the stairs to find a boy staring at me with red, teary eyes and a splotchy red face.
"Katie," Travis croaks. For some reason that voice is so hot! Shut up flirty Katie, this is not the time! I flush at my thoughts. "Why'd you make us watch that? It was so sad!" He uses his hands to wipe his eyes. I let my eyes sweep over him for a few seconds. His posture is horrible, but that's not unusual, and it's kind of cute, to be honest. He's sitting criss-cross applesauce on the couch, the blanket wrapped around his shoulders. His curly hair is crazy from him running his hands through it.
"I don't know Travis, I mean I didn't make you watch it, though I did invite you guys I guess." I say quietly. "Why are you so upset about it though, you look sadder than I feel." I look down at my lap. I feel like I'm being a little insensitive. Travis grabs my hand and I look up at him.
"There's just, well, there's this special someone in my life right now, and I don't really think I could live without her. And the movie just opened my thoughts to the what ifs." He stares at me intently. I didn't know he met someone these last few weeks. Must have been before I broke his arm.
"Well, do you love her?" I ask. "It seems like you do." I say as he blushes a bit. Then he nods. "Well, I don't really know how to say this, but here it is. We both know what it's like to lose someone we cared about. My mom, your dad. Both parents we still have around can go either way, like they have. They can either accept it and move on or stay in it and be sad. But if this person loves you back, they would want you to move on and find love again if something like this happened. And that's a big if. So after that long rambling, what I'm trying to say is, don't be worried about something like that until it happens. I guess. I don't think this sounds as good as it did in my head." I laugh nervously. He squeezes my hand and looks at me with a nervous smile. Wow, he must really love this girl. He's got the nervous smiles when he talks about her! How sweet is that! But I kinda wish it was about me… Stop being selfish, Katie.
"Nah, it was pretty good. My mom is another one I'm worried about, cause she's still in that funk. I think she just needs a wakeup call, but I don't know what to do about that."
"I'm really sorry about that. Really. I remember your mom used to be such a lively person when we met at the parks years ago." Travis nods his head, then starts to stand up and fold his blanket.
"Yeah. Hey, since you made me all sad with the movie," I roll my eyes, "can I at least have a hug?" I look at him confused as I stand and fold mine too.
"Wouldn't your girl be jealous or something? If I hugged you?" I ask. Now he looks confused, then a sort of resigned look crosses his face quickly, before he wipes it off with a grin.
"Nah, she won't. She's not really the jealous type."
"Okay, if you insist." He steps over, wraps his arms around me, and lays his head on mine, and all of a sudden I am very warm. I stiffen up a bit. Either Travis has a high body temperature or my whole body is blushing. Dang, I think I'm jealous of Travis's girl though. His hugs are great. I soften up and put my arms around his waist, since he did ask for a hug from me. He squeezes me tight before letting me go. An awkward silence ensues, and all of a sudden we hear a thump from upstairs. My eyes widen for a moment before I run up the stairs. Travis follows. When I make it to Miranda's room, I find her and Connor wrapped up in each other's arms in a kiss. That's kind of disturbing. They pull apart as soon as they hear us come in and blush. A lot. Like both of their faces are very red. Miranda buries her head in Connor's shoulder, and I have to admit, it is pretty cute.
"What's going on up here?" Travis asks with a raised eyebrow. Connor gets this big smile on his face.
"I asked Miranda out. And she said yes!"
"Finally!" Travis yells. I raise my eyebrow now.
"She's been waiting a long time Connor, you could have asked sooner." I say. Miranda looks up.
"Katie!" she hisses. I smirk.
"Connor's been waiting a while too." says Travis. Miranda and Connor both blush again before looking up at each other.
"Why don't we give the new couple some privacy while we clean up downstairs? It's already almost ten thirty. My dad didn't say a time we had to kick you out but he did say no sleepovers."
"Sure thing Katie-kat." I wonder how his girl would react if he heard him calling me cute little nicknames?
Eventually we made Friday night a thing. Our Friday night. I'm surprised Travis doesn't spend time with his girl on Fridays. He must spend them with her on Saturday or Sunday. This is our fourth weekly movie night. For Halloween, we all went trick or treating! Can you believe it? Me, trick or treating! And guess who's idea it was? Yeah, it was Travis. I'm surprised he didn't bring his girl, honestly. I haven't heard much from him about her since then.
Connor and Miranda started getting all cuddly while we played games and such, and then Travis and I on the other hand are the same as usual. Maybe just slightly more comfortable after that first Movie night. Sometimes dad joins us on his nights off, sometimes he doesn't. He thinks Travis and Connor are pretty cool and is okay with Connor and Miranda dating. Though he did get a short five minute interview in the kitchen while the rest of us set up the basement one week. This Friday was the last day of school before Thanksgiving break.
Today we decided to have Connor and Travis over right after school so we could continue our Avengers marathon. In order. Starting with the first Captain America and Captain Marvel. Then, two weeks ago it was Iron Man, and Iron Man 2. Last week it was The Incredible Hulk and Thor. Oh my gosh I love Thor, and Spiderman, and Captain America. They are all my favorites, and they are like so hot, but spider man is just cute. I can't wait till we get to those ones. This week, we're gonna try to watch three, but usually we end up talking for a long time in between the two and by midnight we're all done with tv so the boys usually head home. Anyway, they're here for The Avengers, then spaghetti made by yours truly, and then Iron Man 3. It's gonna be pretty awesome! Dad's here and he might watch with us for a little bit but then he has to take over someone's shift at six. So we'll be alone the rest of the night.
Lately Travis has pulled a slight prank on me each week, something small, like tipping his cup of water onto my lap or something like that. Nothing big, but still, it's a little annoying. And for some reason it makes me a little angry. I don't know why that is, but oh well. It happens. Anyway, we're on our way home, trying to beat Connor and Travis to our house first. Luckily I know the way to our house with the least amount of stop signs in the neighborhood, so I made it first. Travis wasn't too far behind though. He pulls into the driveway shortly after I do.
"Ha ha, I win!" I say in a sing-song voice. Travis just smirks and shakes his head as he pulls his bag out of his car.
"You sure did, Katie-kat." I smirk triumphantly and waltz inside.
"Hey dad, we're home!" I call out.
"Hey kids, how was school?"
"It was pretty good, Mr. Gardener." says Connor.
"Good, good. There's some popcorn downstairs already, I'll be down in a few minutes. I just have a phone call to make. Feel free to start without me."
"Alright, Dad." I say. I turn to the others. "Get the movie ready, I'm gonna go change into some pj's."
"Bossy bossy." mumbles Miranda as I race up the stairs to my room. I miss Connor and Travis's shared smirk. I pull my Stitch hood over my head and come out of my room to find Travis in the hall.
"What're you doin?" I ask. I look at him suspiciously.
"Waitin for you. I had to use the bathroom."
"There's a bathroom downstairs, you know."
"Yeah, I just wanted to wait for you, Kates. By the way I love that outfit." I blush and look down at my Stitch onesie.
"Thanks." I nod my head in the direction of the stairs and he goes down. I go check the bathroom to see if he put any booby-traps in it. Nothing. Interesting. I hop down the stairs to find him waiting for me by the basement. Again, I pause and look at him suspiciously.
"What're you up to Travis?"
"Nothin." He bounds down to the basement and hops over the couch.
"Well don't you look comfy today, Katie." My dad comes around and pats me on the shoulder before moving to his recliner chair on the side. I shrug my shoulders a bit and start the movie. Why is Natalie Portman so lucky! She gets Thor! And Anakin Skywalker! Too bad she doesn't get Loki, hehe. He's free. Ooh, we're gonna have to do Star Wars next.
About half way into the movie, my dad is conked out in his chair. And Travis scooches a little closer to me and lays his head on my shoulder. Seriously, what is going on with him, today? I don't mind I guess, his hair smells good. Kind of like oranges or something. You know, you have a point. I'm not arguing with that. After the movie finishes, I head upstairs and start the pasta. By the time it's done, dad has to go to work.
"I'll see you later Katie, Miranda, boys. Remember, no shenanigans."
"Of course, Mr. Gardener." says Travis. When we sit down to eat, the boys start shoveling it in like their lives depend on it. Miranda and I look at each other a little grossed out, and then back at the boys, who have paused their ferocious eating. Miranda and I share a look again and start laughing.
"Whatsh sho funny?" Travis asks with his mouth full.
"You guys eat like monsters!" She says, still laughing. Connor gives her a look and then starts eating like a gentleman. Knife and fork. Then he goes over the top and tries a fake accent.
"Travis dear, will you pass me the salad dressing?"
"Of course, Connor dear." Connor then proceeds to drown his salad in dressing, gross. Then he takes a, dare I say it, dainty bite and wipes the corner of his mouth with his napkin. Miranda and I can't help but laugh again. After we're all done, we head to the kitchen to clean up. I squeeze past Travis to get to the kitchen faster than him and he ends up dropping leftover salad dressing on my head! He, like Connor, also drowns his salad in dressing. Which is disgusting. It gets all soggy.
"Travis! Look what you did! Now I have to go take a shower and you have to wash the dishes!" I scold.
"Sorry Katie. Was an accident." he says with a smirk. I set my plate on the counter and scurry upstairs. I check my onesie to see if it has any dressing on it, and I find some in the bottom of the hood. Ugh. I go and grab my favorite grey joggers and a black t-shirt, and underwear and a bra of course. I take my stuff to the bathroom and make sure to lock the door. I hop in the shower and wash the dressing out of my hair, but it is really greasy so I have to use my shampoo. When I'm done I rinse it out and see blue suds. That's weird… OH NO. Travis was here earlier. My shampoo suds are blue. MY HAIR! I climb out of the shower and grab my towel before looking in the mirror.
"AHHHHHH! TRAVIS! I AM GOING TO KILL YOU!" I scream. Him dropping dressing on me was no accident. I have him over for food and a movie and this is how he repays me? He is going to get it. How did he even get dye this blue to stick to my hair? I have brown hair, not blonde! And this is bright blue! It should be way darker than this! I put on my clothes and stomp downstairs to find the others laughing. Miranda whips out her instax mini to take a quick picture of me and my blue hair. Travis photo bombs with peace signs and a cheesy smile. I have a scowl on my face, directed at Travis. Honestly, the picture was timed perfectly. I walk over to Travis and pull him by his shirt collar so his face is at my level. I hear the camera click again and Connor and Miranda laugh.
"What're you playing at, Stoll?"
"Ooh, back to a last name basis are we, Gardner?" He smirks again. Uggh!
"You're so infuriating! You better be watching your back mister, cause you're gonna get it!" He actually looks scared. I let him go and I smirk again. I scared Travis.
After that, we watched the next movie, and it was pretty good, but we were all pretty tired, so the boys headed home. Now what am I going to do to get back at Travis?
After that I was a little mad at Travis, so I made sure to scooch away from him when we went back to watching movies. Then we watch another one, Thor: Dark World. I get up to grab two tubs of ice cream from the freezer and come back to find Travis scooched over towards my spot a bit. Again. I roll my eyes. I can't stay mad at him forever, but he is going to get it for this. Miranda and Connor want to share the cookies and cream, so Travis and I get cookie dough. Actually, I get cookie dough. He's not getting any tonight. I sit down with my spoon and start eating it, before Travis notices everyone has ice cream. Too late. He's staring at me like a puppy with his lower lip stuck out. Pouty pants. Deal with it, you gave me blue hair.
"But Katie-patatie, its ice cream! Can I please have some? Pwease?"
"Not until you apologize, Stoll." He gets a grumpy look on his face now. I swear, he's just like a little kid sometimes.
"But I like your blue hair Katie-kat!"
"Too bad, it's not really my favorite, actually, it's not horrible but at least you could have given me some notice or something. Or we all could have dyed our hair together or something. Then I wouldn't feel so bad."
"Oh, well, sorry Katie. I really am. Next time I will do mine too."
"Oh Travis, there won't be a next time." I say with a little smirk. I hand over the extra spoon I had in my pocket and he lights up like a christmas tree.
"Thanks Katie!"
A little bit later, closer to the end of the movie, Travis lays head in my lap and curls up on the couch, which is a little weird in my book, but he seems to like it so I don't say anything. And I totally didn't start running my fingers through his soft curls. Oh I'll cut the crap, I totally did. They really are as soft as they look. After a while, he falls asleep. I look over to see Miranda and Connor also asleep on the couch.
"How do these people fall asleep so fast?" I shake my head and continue watching the movie and running a hand through Travis's curls.
When the movie is finished, they are still asleep. And it doesn't seem like they are waking up soon. I mean, Travis and Connor are snoring lightly and Miranda groans a few times in her sleep, so I know they're out. I don't know how they're so tired because we've been watching movies all day, using like no energy at all. If I'm going to wait for them to get up, I'm going to have to do something. I hope this doesn't wake Travis up. He looks so peaceful when he's sleeping. I gently lift his head off my lap and set it back on the couch. He curls up a little more, and I fight the urge to kiss his forehead. I can feel myself blush at that. I don't think his girl would like it if another girl kissed him. So I don't give into this odd urge. I grab the spoons and the ice cream tubs and head upstairs to wash any leftover dishes.
Why do I feel like that though, when something like that happens? Not that it has happened before, especially not after we watched The Fault in Our Stars. Nope. I don't have feelings for Travis. Yeah Katie, and denial isn't just a river in Egypt. Are you kidding me? That's so old! What? It's the truth! But regular Katie isn't ready yet, she's still getting over the Brandon thing! It really scared her! Oh yeah, I forgot. But she can still like him, Travis I mean. Yeah but Travis already has someone, remember? Don't get your hopes up. Ugh, shut up! I need some quiet right now and I'm not getting any with my thoughts running wild! I stomp downstairs, quietly, mind you, to check on the kids. Yes, I call them kids, even though Travis is just a little bit older than me. Looks like they're still asleep, Connor and Miranda are a little less curled up and more stretched out. Aww. They're perfect for each other, anyone can see it. And they really like each other too. Travis is still in the same spot as before. Alright, I guess I'm gonna go up to bed then. If dad finds out they slept over, well, I'll deal with it. I don't feel like dealing with kicking them out right now. So I head up to my room and fall asleep.
I wake up to the sun streaming through my window, so I'm obviously not going to be able to fall asleep. I stretch out for a minute or two, and then I reluctantly pull off the covers and head to the bathroom. After doing my business, I brush my teeth but I leave my hair in it's rat's nest.
I head downstairs to make some coffee, because after a late night, like one o'clock, I'm gonna need it. As I sip my coffee, I see Travis's shoes on the rug. I forgot they were still here! I creep down to the bottom of the basement and see them all asleep still, Miranda snuggled into Connors chest and Travis with one arm and leg off the couch, almost facedown. I can't help but smile, and reach for Miranda's instax to take a picture of them all. And one more to keep in my collection, along with the one I stole from Miranda last night. Just some mementos. I leave one on the table and head upstairs to make them all some breakfast.
One thing I loved that my grandma taught us is cooking. So I decide to make a full breakfast. Eggs, sausage, toast, and fried potatoes with onions and garlic, to give it flavor. I make eight pieces of toast while the potatoes and eggs cook, and set out some homemade black raspberry jam, berries from my garden this summer, and butter on the table. I also set out some ketchup because it is great with eggs. And potatoes. Just, ketchup is delicious with a lot of things.
I set a small fan by the basement door and turn it on to move the delicious breakfast smell down there. I'm not gonna be the one to wake them up, I'll let the food do it. I turn the fan off when the food is done, and now it's time to wait. I head up to my room and grab my new book off my desk, and then I walk downstairs to the kitchen to wash the dishes I used to make breakfast. Then I'll read. Just as I'm finishing up, someone puts their arms around my shoulders and rests their head on mine.
"Mornin Katie." says the sexiest morning voice ever. I could almost melt as my heart flutters violently. Geez, his girl is lucky. Speaking of his girl, why is he doing this with you if he's got her? Good question.
"Good morning Travis. Did you sleep okay on the couch?" I ask. I finish up the dishes and then just stand there waiting for him to take his arms off me.
"Yeah I slept fine. I wondered where you went though. You weren't there when I woke up. Sorry about falling asleep on you." I twist out from under his arms and head to the fridge to pull out some orange juice.
"It's alright Travis. And I went up to my room, there wouldn't have been enough room for all of us and there is no way I was gonna be scrunched up in a ball all night." I try to play off my nervousness with a kind of ignorance play, or something like that. But seriously, I am very nervous right now. And I don't know why! Yes, you doooo. Shut up.
"Oh, okay. Hey, your blue hair looks awesome this morning." I turn around to finally look at him. Since I was way too nervous to do so earlier, and still am, but I can't avoid it. His blue eyes have that 'just woke up' look to them and his hair is messy. One side of his face is red from where he slept on the couch.
"Thanks, I guess." It's actually a really cool silvery blue, reminding me of something I can't put my mind on. It reminds me of… wait a sec. He did that on purpose didn't he? He dyed my hair the color of his eyes! Why would he do that? That's just weird!
"There's some breakfast on the table if you want. I'm gonna go get Miranda and Connor up."
"Might not wanna go down there, if I were you. It's a snogfest down there."
"Ewww! Morning breath! And snogfest? What do you read, Harry Potter?"
"Actually yeah, I have. But that was just random. It fits better than kiss fest."
"Yeah that's true." I walk over to the basement stairway and yell down. "Hey you two, time to break it up, it's breakfast time!"
"I saw the picture you took of us all downstairs on the table. Why'd you take the picture?" Travis asks.
"Eh, I did it to remember the fun times we have. Miranda started it last night with my blue hair."
"Right. Sounds cool. I hope we get a lot of the pictures." He smiles and I smile back. Me too Travis.
After breakfast, the boys head back to their house. I need to plan my revenge on Travis, and I need Connor and Miranda's help. Miranda and Connor are on a date today, so I call them in the middle, I know, I'm a wonderful sibling, and we make the plan. It's going to take place tonight, at midnight, at their house, and it's going to happen. I'm making sure of it.
Midnight. It's go time. I put on my black sweatshirt and skinny jeans, and then I put my hair up, to keep it out of my face. I put plastic gloves, a plastic hair net, and bright green hair dye in a plastic garbage bag. Then I grab Miranda, and she grabs her little camera before we walk to Travis and Connor's house. Connor gave me the brand of dye that Travis used on me, cause it works almost instantly. We walk quickly through the dark neighborhood, we want to make this as quick as possible. It's a revenge mission.
We get to the house and Connor is there at the door waiting for us, so we don't make a ruckus knocking on the door.
"Alright guys, you ready? You got the hair dye Katie?" Connor whispers. I nod. Their house is really neat, like the boys clean it. Or maybe they just do it on weekends or something. But it smells nice, kind of like Travis, in a good way. Not the weird, I sniff you way. Connor leads us quietly up to Travis's room, where the door is open just a crack. He's sleeping halfway off his bed just like he did at my house last night. It's gonna be slightly harder to do this with him like that.
"Alright, Connor here's the stuff. Miranda, get ready to put the garbage bag on the pillow as soon as I lift his head up, kay?" I whisper. I see them nod in the dim light of Connor's flashlight.
I walk quietly over to Travis and gently lift his head up off his pillow, which he is barely using anyway. Miranda quickly puts the pillow in the garbage bag, so we don't stain the case when we do the dye. Then she puts it back and I set Travis's head back on it. I grab the gloves and the dye and start massaging it through his hair, making sure to get it all in. I hear a click and then another one. One for Travis and one for us. That will be the only evidence, and we will leave it on his dresser. Sure, Miranda will take more, for my secret collection. I told her about it, my slight feelings today after the boys left. She was really comforting about it, especially since I don't really know what to do. She also said I was a bit oblivious, but I don't know what that meant. I finish putting the dye on and Connor leaves the room to get his phone so he can take a picture. All of a sudden, Travis starts moving around a bit, mumbling something incoherent. Then he says it again.
"Katieee." My eyes widen a lot. I don't think his girlfriend would like him moaning my name when he's asleep. That's also really weird. I have to stifle a yelp as he pulls me by my waist down next to him. So he's flush against me… on his bed. This is very weird. I feel a tug in my chest and a warmth starts blooming from there, outward throughout my body. Also very weird. My face is inches from his and I can feel his slow breath on my lips, that's how close we are. It's slow enough I can tell he's asleep. I hear two clicks somewhere to the side, and my eyes widen even bigger. My hair is touching Travis's now dye filled hair! I'm gonna be evidence! Although he already will know because of the picture on his dresser. I gently pry his hands from around my waist and slide off the bed. Then I put the plastic shower cap on Travis's hair, to protect it even more. I can hear Miranda trying not to laugh in the corner. Then I pack up my stuff, leave a picture, and we head downstairs. She shows me the picture of me and Travis on the bed, and I blush. A lot. In the photo, Travis has his arms around me and is close to me, but it is me that looks hilarious. I have a bright red face and my eyes are super wide. And Travis looks, well, I can't really tell what it is. Connor comes into the room after getting his picture of Travis.
"So, do you think it went well? I think it's hilarious that you came up with this Katie!" Connor says.
"Shh Connor, we don't want him to wake up yet!" Miranda hisses.
"Sorry Mir."
"It's okay. But look at this!" She shows him the picture of Travis and me on the bed. I blush again and he laughs.
"Are you gonna show him this?" My eyes widen and I shake my head.
"No! That would be so embarrassing! For me and probably for him too!" I whisper yell. Connor puts his hands up.
"Kay, kay. I won't tell him." He looks over at Miranda.
"You guys should probably go now, your dad might wonder where you went."
"Yeah," says Miranda, "we should go Katie." I nod and we head out. When we get home, Miranda turns to me.
"I left one of the pictures of you and him on his dresser." I look at her, slightly confused.
"Yeah, the one of me dying his hair, right?"
"And the one of you and him on the bed…"
"Miranda!" I pinch the bridge of my nose. "Well, it's too late now. I'll just have to deal with it." She nods somewhat ashamedly, and we go inside. I walk to the bathroom, and see that part of my hair is dyed green, only a little bit, but it's noticeable. Crap This is gonna be weird.
Travis's POV
Ahh. The sun is shining, my dream last night was great, and something is crinkling underneath me. Near my ear. Must be the bag of chips I had last night before bed. I pull the covers up over me, since I found them at the foot of my bed.
My dream last night though, it seemed so real. Like really real. I was dreaming that me and Katie were hanging out when I fell on the couch and pulled her with me by the waist, and oh my gosh she smelled so nice. And she actually snuggled into me, albeit a bit stiffly. And I almost kissed her but she fell off the couch, which was kind of funny. I must have been snuggling one of my pillows because it felt real. And I could literally smell her. It was so weird but it was amazing! I only wish it could have happened in real life.
I lay in bed a few more minutes, just thinking about Katie. I feel like she's shying away from me a little bit, but maybe I'm pushing it a bit far. Yesterday morning when I woke up, I felt sad that she hadn't stay on the couch with me, but also I understand why she didn't. She is a little oblivious when it comes to my feelings for her. I even told her there was someone, and hinted that it was her, but she thought it was someone else. That I love someone else, not her. So she probably thought that I have a girlfriend that I hang out with and thought she would be jealous. I bet she never thought she would be jealous of herself. That made me a little sad that she didn't realize it, but I'm willing to wait for her. I definitely don't want to push her too much cause of the thing that happened in middle school. I still can't believe that jerk Brandon kissed her without her permission, and when she pushed him off her he told everyone she was a loser! We talked about it at lunch one day.
So I'm not pushing. At least I don't think I was, or am. Maybe I was pushing it a little bit in the morning when I wrapped my arms around her as she was washing the dishes, I just couldn't help myself. Her little blue messy bun was bobbing when she moved her arm and she just looked so huggable from behind. And her hair smelled like strawberries. I would give anything to smell her hair again. And when she ran her hands through my hair while we were watching, well, I almost had to excuse myself to take care of something, that's how amazing it felt. Anway, that's enough about Katie now. I don't need anymore almost's to happen. I pull off the covers and go downstairs to eat breakfast. First I head over to my mom's seat and give her a kiss on the cheek.
"Morning mom." She doesn't respond. Just like usual. I sigh deeply. I'm so worried for her. She has been like this since my dad left, and it's been horrible. She was a wonderful mother before dad left. Sometimes I get so mad at dad, I just wanna-
"Hey Travis," I hear her call after a minute. My eyes widen. She rarely asks me for things, except to go to the store or fill her cup again. I go back over to her seat.
"Yeah mom? What do you need?"
"Can you make me some coffee? Oh, and what's that on your head?" she asks slowly.
"Sure I can, what do you mean?" She points to my head and I reach up to feel plastic. That's weird, why would I have a shower cap on my head? I pull it off and go to put it back upstairs. When I walk in the bathroom I see that there is green goup all over my hair.
"CONNOR! GET UP HERE!" Connor comes rushing in, looking scared, like he was afraid I fell or something. Pshh, Travis Stoll never falls in the shower. Wait, yeah, pssh. Never happened. Then he sees me and bursts out laughing.
"You better wash that out before it stains it permanently! Oh they got you good!"
"Who is they?" I ask, frustrated. Who would do this to me?
"Go check your dresser, brother. You'll find out who one of them is, and I'm sure you'll guess the other." I stomp to my room and go over to my dresser. There are two pictures, obviously taken with Miranda's little camera. The first picture is of Katie in all black, rubbing the green dye in my hair, while I was asleep.
"Katie?!" Why would she do this? Then I see her blue hair and I remember. Well, I guess I deserve it. I check the other picture and I almost fall over in shock. In the picture, Katie is pressed up next to me on my bed and her face is bright red and her eyes are wide. And my arms are around her waist, just like IN MY DREAM! OH MY GOSH IT WASN"T REALLY A DREAM but at the same time it was. Our faces are so close in the picture, and my face heats up just thinking about being in that close of a proximity with her. I can see why she looks embarrassed. Gosh, I'm embarrassed. So embarrassed. I don't know what to say about this.
Here's the chapter! I hope it was all good, and there are no mistakes. I just wanted to get this up so I could see your reactions! Please read and review, cause that would be awesome! Anyway, next chapter will be up soon, maybe this weekend. AND some serious stuff is about to go down between Katie and Travis, and just in the story in general. Stay fresh! ~kalisfandomstories1004
