Toothless stirred. He opened his eyes and shook out his head. He grumbled at the sight of his broken prosthetic. The branches of the trees he fell through scratched up against his scales. It took him a second to remember what happened. He and Hiccup were flying, yes, and then a dragon ambushed them. The Night Fury seemed to gasp. He used his nose to flip up the top of his saddlebag. He sighed when he saw that he still had the crystals. But Hiccup... He had to find him. He couldn't do it alone, though. He needed somebody else to steer him.
Berkians jumped at the sight of Toothless passing through the village. They stopped their daily activities.
"Hey, isn't that the chief's son's dragon?" one Berkian asked.
Toothless snorted. His big, black eyes rolled up to the sky. Was it just him, or did the Sun look a little dimmer? It didn't look like it was shining as brightly. Toothless tried to not let it get to him. Right now, he needed to find Hiccup's friends.
Gothi's hut was on a ledge that overlooked the ocean. The wood was coming apart in a few places. The hut itself wasn't the largest. The petite, old woman was meditating at the ledge's edge. Her two white braids hovered over her shoulders. Her Viking helmet was one of the smallest. It did not even cover her whole head. Resting across her lap was her wooden staff.
Hiccup's friends and his father were behind her.
Astrid impatiently paced back and forth in front of Gothi's hut with her fists clenched. She shivered a bit but then asked, "Where is he?"
Behind her, Gobber was working on a blacksmith project. Gothi wanted a new sword to hang in her hut. His hammer hand banged the metal on the wooden workbench. The constant clanging did not help Astrid's uneasiness. "Patience, Astrid," Gobber said, "sometimes the boy gets distracted."
Next to him, Fishlegs smiled and patted Meatlug's head. "I for one think that curiosity is a wonderful gift."
"Sure," Snotlout said. "That is until it gets us killed."
Ruffnut and Tuffnut, who were sitting on an empty workbench, chuckled mischievously. "I'm sure we can come up with a way to pull that tyrant out of hiding," Tuffnut said.
"Oh, for sure," Ruffnut added. She winked at Barf.
Barf returned it.
Tuffnut rubbed his hands together. "Death and destruction. It calls our name. Eh, Ruff?"
Even Stoick started to pace. As a father, he knew when something was amiss. He peered down on his village, and his eyes landed on Toothless. He pointed at him. "It's Toothless!"
Toothless screeched. He sprinted up the hill to Gothi's hut.
"Toothless!" Astrid said. She frightfully looked at his empty saddle and torn tailfin. "What happened? Where's Hiccup?"
Toothless shook his head. He acted out an intimidating dragon figure and roared.
Astrid, her friends, and Stoick watched him carefully.
Gothi got up from her mat. She leaned on her staff, an interested look on her face.
"Okay." Snotlout shivered. "I think the dragon ate one too many mackerels this morning."
"No, he's saying that he and Hiccup were ambushed," Astrid corrected, "…by another dragon."
Stoick glared. He clenched his fists. "Naga."
Dagur and Ryker's boats still sailed over the open ocean. Their men paddled as fast as they could. The wind caught their sails, helping with speed.
Dagur noticed an incoming figure from the sky. Grinning, he pointed at it. "Ooh! Ooh! There he is!"
"Where?" Ryker immediately joined him on their boat's port side.
Naga rushed past a few rock structures. He soared over the longboat and dropped Hiccup from his claws.
He yelled, crashing into a bunch of barrels that were filled full with cod. Before he knew it, he was sitting in a huge mass of fish. A few were on his lap.
"Oh, ho, ho!" Dagur approached him. He offered him his arms. "Welcome, Hiccup."
Hiccup glared. "Dagur." But then he smiled. "You know what usually happens when you kidnap me. My friends will come and blast your longboats."
"Ooh, so optimistic," Dagur chuckled. "The truth is, brother, you're actually the bait for a little something we're testing."
Hiccup's glare returned. He started to get up, but Dagur said, "Oh no you don't." As quick as a flash, he grabbed Hiccup's prosthetic leg and pulled it off. Dagur chucked it overboard into the ocean.
That was when Hiccup grew nervous. "Uh, that's a problem," he sarcastically said.
Naga flew in circles around the longboat. His wingtips skimmed the chilly water. He briefly looked up at the Sun. The light passed through his crystalline body. Lines of rainbows scattered all around him. The view was quite enthralling.
Hiccup glanced at the dragon and then at the hunters. "What are you doing to that poor dragon?" he asked Ryker and Dagur.
"Oh, nothing," Ryker said. He grabbed the back of Hiccup's vest. "All we have to do now is wait for your friends."
Boom! A blast of fire smashed into the longboat. It shook with the impact. Just as expected, Hiccup's friends found him. Stormfly's acute sense of smell tracked him down (the thanks to her being a Tracker Dragon).
Hiccup smirked at Dagur and Ryker. "Well, they're here. Ooh, I'm so scared."
"You should be," Ryker growled.
Stoick was steering Toothless who had a new tailfin. He cracked his shoulders. "Let's do this, Toothless. It's time to blast those pirates into oblivion."
On the longboat, Ryker said, "Don't get too optimistic," to Hiccup. "This is all going according to plan." He reached into his belt and pulled out Naga's crystal. "Naga, you know what to do," he said.
Naga nodded. He zoomed towards the Dragon Riders and their dragons. A blast of white light erupted from his prisms and blinded them.
"Ah!" Astrid shouted. She and her friends closed their eyes against it.
"It burns!" Snotlout said.
Toothless pushed through the pain. He may not have been able to see, but he relied on his senses to find Naga. The Night Fury opened his mouth. A blue ball of fire appeared in it. The attack was Toothless's most well-known one–Plasma Blast. He put all his strength into it and aimed it straight for Naga.
The dragon's first instinct was to hold up his wing like a shield. Toothless's Plasma Blast smashed right into it. The whole sky shook. The light barrier surrounding the Dragon Riders vanished. Hiccup's friends and his father could finally open their eyes again.
Toothless's attack cracked Naga's wing. Light energy poured out of his crystals. The whole wing was now dimmer than the rest of them.
Down below, Hiccup yelled at his friends and father, "Guys, you need to get out of here! It's a trap!" Trap? What was he talking about?
Naga was furious. He lowered his injured wing. Eyes glowing, he roared his metal-screeching roar. SCREEEEEEECH!
Hiccup, his friends, and father slapped their hands up against their ears.
"No! No! No!" Stoick yelled.
Naga's wings opened further. He gave them a quick flap and soared towards the Sun.
"Stop him! Stop him!" Stoick added. He and the Riders quickly moved in on the dragon.
"What's he doing?" Hiccup asked.
Ryker had enough of his constant chatter. He lifted his fist and punched him in the tummy, knocking him out. "Ah, that's better," Ryker chuckled.
To the Riders' horror, Naga showed them his true power. Right in front of their eyes, he stole light from the Sun. Rays of sunshine floated down from the atmosphere and made their way into his crystals. Within seconds, his injury healed, and the light returned to his wing.
Stoick and Toothless caught the Dragon Hunters off guard. Toothless unleashed multiple Plasma Blasts which threw them back. Stoick grabbed Hiccup from Ryker. "Thank you," he said.
One would think Ryker and Dagur would be upset, but they were not. They had to admit that so far, the exhibition match was going quite well.
Due to lack of sunlight, the whole world grew darker and colder. Powerful waves rocked the longboats. The Dragon Riders were not out of danger. Hiccup woke up right as Naga finished his midday snack. His eyes widened at the sight of the dimmed Sun. "Wha-What happened?"
It was time for Step 2 of Naga's plan: blast the Riders into oblivion and get Hiccup alone. With so much light in his body, he started to grow in size. Before the Riders, dragons, and Stoick knew it, he was no longer thirty feet tall. Naga was one-hundred feet tall.
Hiccup yelled when he tried to get in his head again. His bruise glowed up. That time, Stoick noticed it.
From Hookfang's back, Snotlout whimpered, "Are we dead now?"
Stoick wasted no time to reply, "Yep."
"The time has come for you to join me," Naga told Hiccup.
"I want to, Naga," Hiccup responded.
"Forget it!" Stoick shouted at the dragon. "I'm not going to let you touch him!" His response made Naga even more upset than he already was.
Dagur and Ryker continued to enjoy the show from their longboat. "That's it, Naga. Blast them to smithereens!" Dagur cheered. It was all too clear that the Riders had no chance against Naga. For once, the villains had the upper-hand.
Naga brought an enormous ball of light up from his stomach. He aimed it at the ocean. A giant wave smashed right into the Riders' dragons. Everybody yelled. They were blown right out the battle arena. All of them spun towards Berk.
The island soon came into view. Berkians leaped out of the way. Toothless, Stormfly, Barf and Belch, Meatlug, and Hookfang crash-landed in the center of the village. They slid all the way to the other side, through food barrels and gates. Frightened sheep took off running. Hiccup was chucked right off Toothless's back. He landed at Gothi's feet, shivering from the effects of the Light Dragon's torture. He and his friends had sprung the trap. They were overpowered.
