Prologue

"I don't know about this, Yugi," Ishizu said slowly.

Yugi's gaze was steady. "It's the only way. And even if it isn't, I don't want to take the chance of looking for a different one."

"This would be an unimaginable risk for you."

"Exactly. It's a risk for me. If this plan goes south, I'm the only one who stands to lose anything."

"We stand to lose you."

Yugi's head drooped. "I'm already lost."

Ishizu was silent. She had nothing to contradict that point. "But if someone were to find the puzzle-"

"-Then I'd be there to make sure things didn't get out of hand."

Ishizu nodded slowly. "You do realize this will prevent you from being reincarnated."

Her friend nodded. "That's the idea. If I'm reincarnated, I'll forget everything I learned and everyone I loved in this life. I don't want that to happen."

Ishizu sighed heavily. "I understand. I still don't fully approve of this plan, but I can see your mind is made up."

A small smile appeared on Yugi's face – the largest one he had made in months. "Thanks, Ishizu."

"I hope for all our sakes that your plan works."
