After The Road Less Traveled

It had been a momentous day. Shane had reconnected over the phone with her sister Alex. Oliver had referred to himself as her boyfriend. Norman and Rita had asked Oliver and Shane to stand with them as their maid of honor and best man at their upcoming wedding. After leaving Ramon's Bistro, Oliver was driving Shane home both thinking about current events.

Taking Shane's hand to help her out of the car, Oliver was contemplating the new stages in the Postables lives. Contemplating the same subject, Shane stopped as he opened the gate at the beginning of the path to her house. "Oliver how is being my boyfriend different from going steady?" Shane asked.

He paused putting her arm through his before starting to walk with her up the path.

"I'll always order dessert. Therefore, when you say you don't want any, but you really do, you can have mine."

Laughing Shane said, "What else?"

"Knowing the other person's preferences well enough that you can order for them." Oliver replied.

"So mostly about food?" Shane asked grinning.

"No, we know about each other's crazy Uncle Bob's." Oliver said introspectively.

"What do you mean?" Shane said confused.

"You know those relatives you're embarrassed about but love because they're family." Oliver said. Shane thought immediately about Alex while Oliver thought about his mother and Harvey.

"What else?" Shane asked curious.

"Hm. Always having a ride to the airport." He continued as they climbed the steps.

"Oliver, I'm not going anywhere without you," She stopped looking at him seriously.

"We talk about the important things in our lives. Even when it's hard." He said squeezing her hand.

"We do." Shane said looking at him tenderly. "Anything else?"

"Always having someone to be with on the holidays," he added gazing at her.

"That sounds nice." Shane asked smiling slightly continuing up the stairs.

"Being each other's person," Oliver said turning more serious.

"Person?" Shane looked at him quizzically.

"That person you turn to when you're happy, sad, excited, or just need to share a moment. Whether that moment is special or only fascinating to you. Because they get you and understand."

She leaned her head on his shoulder her smile widening. "That sounds really nice. What else?"

They had arrived at her door. As she unlocked her door, Oliver smiled mischievously waiting until she turned. "Spending more time together doing this." He slid his hand around the back of her neck drawing her towards him brushing his lips against hers while slowly sliding his arm around her waist. He felt her hands grip his coat. As the kiss continued deepening her mind went blank. Losing herself in him she lost her grip on his coat leaning against him as she went limp.

Having difficulty collecting her thoughts. "I'm…You're…well… that will work." Shane said breathlessly resting her head on his chest as he held her in support grinning while resting his chin on the top of her head.
