(The next day...)
Marinette nervously held the camera in her hands, trying not to drop it.
You'll be fine.
You'll be fine.
The camera will be fine.
Everything's fine.
Just fine.
She repeated the stuff Alya had told her inside her mind.
You've got this.
She looked around at the group of people next to her. Alya, Alix, Max, Kim, Rose, Juleka, Luka, Adrien, and Kagami were all doing photography. As for the other students who weren't there, they were working on other yearbook activities. Ivan, Mylene, and Nathaniel were doing the layout. Marc, and a couple other students she didn't know the name of, were doing the writing and editing portion.
"Okay, so Ms. Bustier said that we should photograph the students in band, dance, and cheer, since they all have their performances today." Alya adjusted her camera lens. The whole photography group was gathered in the hallway, doing the same.
"Everyone can travel in pairs, and then we can meet up back in the hallway when we're done." The raven-haired girl reminded
"I'll be with Juleka." Rose said.
"Kim and I can work together." Alix was next to speak.
"Marinette and I will work together." Adrien smiled at her. Marinette managed to smile back at him, still anxious.
The only people left were Luka, Kagami, Alya, and Max.
"So...do you want to-" Luka was cut off before he could continue.
"No, absolutely not." Kagami snapped, "I only work with those who are worthy of me. I will be working alone." She walked away.
"Uhhh...so you're saying I'm not worthy...?"
Kagami didn't respond but just kept walking.
"..."
"Don't worry Luka, you can work with me." Alya offered.
"And Max can work with us as a group of three." Alix said.
Both Luka and Max agreed.
"Marinette, you coming?" Adrien motioned for her to follow him.
"Mhm. Yes. C-coming. Heh." Marinette told Tikki, who was in her purse, "I'll just keep a low profile, and he'll barely even-" Before she could complete her sentence, she knocked over a trash can. It landed on the floor with a loud "CRASH" sound, the lid falling off. Thankfully, only one or two things spilled out, but Adrien still looked behind him to see what happened.
"I-I knocked over a stash...mash...er...ash...er...trash can...it's not a big deal I'll just-"
"Want me to help?" Adrien asked.
"No, I don't want your help!" Marinette blurted out quickly. "What I meant to say was...I...can do it...myself." She set the trash can upright again and followed the blonde into the gym. There were bleachers to the back of the gym, where the students were sitting. As of when they got there, the dance and cheer performances had already been over, but Marinette assumed that Alya and Luka, who had gotten there before her, had already photographed everything.
Adrien noticed Marinette struggling with the camera. He reached out with a hand, "Here, let me-" Marinette yelped, dropping the camera as if it was on fire. Adrien grabbed it moments before it had the chance to hit ground.
"Thanks." This was the only thing Marinette had the courage to say as she stared into his emerald green eyes.
"No problem. That's what friends are for." Adrien responded, speaking over the loud band music. He handed her the camera.
"Yup." Marinette sighed, setting up her camera to try and take some photos.
Key word: Try.
She set up the tripod stand with the camera on top, ready to take a group shot of the school band. The bluenette stepped back, which was, in retrospect, a mistake, as there was a rotten banana peel right where she stepped.
And I think we all know what happens when you step on a banana peel.
Ya slip.
"Wh- AAAAH!" Marinette landed on the floor in a sitting position.
Adrien stifled a laugh, "Are you absolutely sure you don't need any help?"
"Yes! I'm sure!" Marinette growled, dusting herself off.
Ugh, how humiliating. I'm just the klutz who can't do anything right!
"Mari!" Luka called over to them, "You guys can set up the cameras here next to us. You'll get a better angle, and this way, everyone will be included in the photo!"
Marinette smiled genuinely, suddenly seeming so unlike her usual flustered self, and more like the Marinette Chat knew. And since when did Luka call her MARI?! Was that a nickname for her?! Did she like it?! Should he call her that?! Or would that be weird?!
Does she only ever do this to me? I thought if I'd spend more time with her, then she'd like me...but she's still acting weird. An alarming feeling washed over Adrien, Wait, but Marinette has been acting all awkward with me ever since I met her...does that mean she hated me from the start?! Does that mean we were never friends?! DOES THAT MEAN-
"Adrien! We're over here now!" Marinette told him excitedly, "Luka had the brilliant idea to move the cameras here!" She hugged him. Luka gave Adrien a welcoming smile, who only glowered in return. Luka's smile faded as he stepped back, obviously unsettled by his response. This didn't go unnoticed by Alya.
"Yeah...brilliant...just...brilliant." Adrien repeated the word inside his mind, brilliant. He scoffed, All he did was suggest we move somewhere else. Ok maybe that's cool, or smart, or nice, but BRILLIANT? Oh, that is so not brilliant.
Adrien's frustration only increased as he spotted Luka and Marinette chatting animatedly about camera lens or something along those lines, though he didn't really care what they were talking about. He just cared that they were talking together. Without him.
Rage bubbled up inside of him, an angry volcano ready to erupt. He locked eyes with the guitarist. Luka looked surprised, if anything. His teal-blue eyes didn't seem to coney any emotion, while Adrien stared at him coldly.
Go on, look away. I dare you.
"Ooooh, someone's jealous I see." Plagg said, causing Adrien to break eye contact with the other teen.
"I'm not jealous, what would I even be jealous of? Adrien asked, his anger quickly subsiding and dying down. Why had he got so worked up? It didn't make sense. He should apologize to Luka later.
"I think I know what this is about. It's about your 'just a friend'!"
"Don't be stupid, Plagg, of course I'm not in love with Marinette. You know I'm in love with Ladybug."
Plagg looked smug, "Ha! I never said you were in love with Marinette."
"That's not what I meant and you know it."
He shook his head. It didn't matter anyways.
Marinette walked up to him, "Why-why haven't you taken a single photo? I-I thought we were supposed to work together."
"We were..."
"Come on Mari, Adrien probably just wants some alone time."
Adrien could almost feel her disappointment, "Oh, okay." He looked back at Luka and Marinette then looked away.
"I should be glad for Marinette. She's finally found someone she's happy with. And I...should be happy too."
Poor Adrien xd
