Bang, bang, bang.
Molly startles awake as a knock sounds at her door. She glances at the clock on her desktop 0400 hours.
"Up and at em Dawes. Dress for a work out."' Geddings calls out.
Knowing he'll just keep knocking if she doesn't get up, Molly pulls herself from the bed, quickly dresses, and makes her bed. She storms over to the door and yanks it open. "Alright, alright I'm up."
Geddings is not alone. A blonde man and a brunette woman stand waiting with him in their own workout clothes. "Good morning Dawes. Molly Dawes, this is two of your fellow instructors, Luke Norris and Kara Wilson."
"Good Morning Molly." Luke steps forward with his hand out to shake hers. "It's nice to meet you. Matt's told us a lot about you. We're pleased to have you join us."
Kara steps up next. "Yeah, it's wonderful to have another woman around. I can only take so much testosterone." Kara smiles brightly and shakes her hand. Molly laughs knowing exactly what she means.
"Good morning. Nice to meet you both." Molly smiles already feeling at ease with these new friends. "Thanks for including me in your morning routine. So what's the plan?"
"We're going to run the course." Matthew informs.
Molly inwardly groans knowing it's going to be a rough morning.
Hoisting herself over the wall ahead of Kara, Molly lands on the balls of her feet already running, she reaches the ladder to the rope bridge climbing up and quickly making her way across, then sliding down the rope to the ground. She runs quickly up and over the next platform, jumping down and running into the maze overtaking Luke. She picks up the pace and comes up alongside Matthew as they reach the rope pyramid climbing up, over, and back down. "I'm not as out of practice as you expected huh Geddings." She says as they hit the ground.
"Contrary to what you may think I wasn't trying to test you. I invited you along because I knew you could handle it. Anyway it's good for you refresh your memory of the course before you run your recruits through." He says as he braces at bottom of the tall wall at the end of the course preparing to hoist her over. She puts her boot in his hands and she grabs the wall to pull herself up. She lays out on the wall and prepared to help Kara up if she needs it when Matthew hoists her up. Luke makes it onto the wall and gives Matthew an arm up. They hit the ground running and jump over the last ditch to complete the course.
"Whew that was a workout." Molly breathes out to Matthew as they run ahead of Luke and Kara. "Thanks for bringing me along. It gives me a chance to bond with Luke and Kara too. They seem to be good mates."
"Yeah I thought it would be good for you to get to know your fellow instructors. See what they're made of before we get bogged down with the new recruits. We usually go to the pub in town when we have some free if you ever want to come. They have some delicious fish and chips on the menu."
"Thanks Geddings. I'll be sure to take you up on that."
"You can call me Matthew or Matt you know. I'm not your instructor anymore. We're friends." He says just as Luke and Kara catch up.
"Dang your fast." Kara huffs out as they cool down.
"Being small has its advantages. Makes me fast. I struggled with the course when I was a recruit but I've kept up a pretty serious fitness routine since those days. Being on tour in Afghan showed me the importance of the drills we learned here." Molly says as she stretches out her leg.
"We should workout together from now on. Seeing how hard you went for it challenged me to work harder."
"You're on." Molly agrees.
"Ok everybody drink up. You need to stay hydrated." Luke says as he passes out water bottles from his pack.
"So Molly we heard you were on an MC recipient. What's the story there?" Kara asks.
"Well my mate Smurf thought he saw some suspicious activity in the sector we were patrolling so he branches off without telling anyone to check it out. The idiot walked right into a mind field and got pinned down by a sniper. The sniper got him in the thigh. He was pissing blood fast and screaming out for help. My CO didn't want me going to him but I reminded him as the medic it was my duty to help my fallen teammates. I used my knife to detect for any mines as I was trained to but halfway across the field my foot hit a mine causing an explosion. I was knocked momentary unconscious by the blast but I quickly came to with all me limbs intact. Fortunately, the blast threw me closer to Smurf so I was able to get to him faster and start to pack his wound to slow the bleeding. The tourniquet wasn't working so I had to put my fist in his groin to keep him from bleeding out. I went up in the winch with him to helicopter against orders. We got him to the hospital in time and he able to return to duty within a few weeks."
"Wow that's amazing! You were so brave. Do you and Smurf still keep in touch?" Luke asks.
Molly looks down as her eyes well up at the memories of Smurf. "No he uh died of a brain bleed after we got home. He was actually visiting me at time. Died on the football field right in me arms."
"Shit Molly! I'm sorry. That must have been rough." Luke exclaims as Kara squeezes Molly's shoulder in support. Matthew just watches her with those dark knowing eyes.
"Yeah it was the hardest death for me to process. He was my best mate. We were planning to go to Vegas together. He'd already brought me a fancy red dress for the occasion said he wanted to show me off. He had all these plans. Was planning to work for his uncle at a mechanic shop and settle down. Then he was gone so quickly. Shook me to my core. I still visit his mother Candy every year on the anniversary. This year will be the fourth." Molly says wiping away a few tears that escaped. She takes a deep breathe. "Ok enough tears that Walsh wanker would be angry with me for dwelling on things. He was all about focusing on living the life in front of him and not looking back."
"Alright well we should hit the showers. Then we can grab some lunch." Matthew announces as he and Luke pull Molly and Kara to their feet.
