I'm With You- Vance Joy
Harvey was never a sing-out-loud kind of guy. Mike knew that better than anyone. He was always the first person in the room to push Harvey towards singing out a few tunes but he had never succeeded. He never completely dropped the request to hear Harvey sing but over the years Mike realized he probably would never live to see the day, and so he pushed Harvey less and less frequently.
Mike sat in the passenger seat just staring out the window. He was just enjoying the first day off they've had in a while, even if they were stuck in awful traffic. His eyes were glued to anything outside of the car to avoid the red unfurled across Harvey's face. His partner had been swearing non-stop since they merged onto the expressway. Mike knew it was coming but he didn't want Harvey's sour mood to ruin vacation. They were fortunate that the office decided to shutdown for labor day which landed on a Monday this year, forcing a three day weekend. The unfortunate part is that they were not the only people with a three day weekend which resulted in the traffic jam on the L.I.E. Harvey was currently cursing out. They made it up through the Bronx almost without a hitch. A quick diversion past Yankee stadium made up for any hiccups up to that point. Now, however, Mike feels foolish for thinking it would be an easy two hour drive like usual. Traffic was still moving but it didn't seem to appease the older man at all. After 30 minutes of constant bickering Mike finally broke his vow to ignore Harvey and reached up to turn on the radio so he could connect his iPod. It may not have helped ease Harvey's tension at all but it did allow Mike to relax again.
The traffic slightly picked up it's pace after passing Corona Park and the swearing slowed down but didn't stop completely until the radio went silent for a minute. He didn't think anything of it. Mike was enthralled watching the planes descending on their arrival into JFK, ignoring the stop and go flow of the cars. He had assumed a song on his iPod just ended and had a few extra seconds of dead time before it switched to the next track in the playlist. He knew he was wrong when he heard the plucking of guitar strings in an intro to a song that wasn't even on the current playlist that was on shuffle.
His breath caught in his throat at the look Harvey was giving him. "I saw you standing there. Sandy blonde hair, the way it came tumbling down. Just like a waterfall. And if you need a light I'll be the match to your candle. My darling, I'm ready, to burst into flames for you. I was just coasting til we met. You remind me just how good it can get. Well I've been on fire dreaming of you, tell me you don't, it feels like you do. Looking like that, you'll open some wounds. How does it start and when does it end? Only been here for a moment but I know I want you. But is it too soon? To know that I'm with you. There's nothing I can do."
Harvey looked back forward as the traffic moved again. Mike knew his eyes were wet. It was undeniable after the initial prickling of tears threatening to spill and even less arguable once the water spilled down his cheeks at the soothing voice Harvey graced him, and only him with. Between his baby's voice and the words Harvey sang so intensely, as if he personally connected with every single lyric, Mike was breaking down in the passenger seat before the start of the second verse. The car came to a stop and Mike felt the brush of fingers tracing the lines down his cheeks. Harvey never stopped singing but the look in his eyes was a mix of absolute love and a little concern. Mike would never cut off the beautiful voice beside him so he just smiled between the tears up at the love of his life. The car picked up speed again and Harvey shifted into fifth gear and quickly held onto Mike's hand for the remainder of their time on the expressway. Mike was grateful that Harvey didn't expect anything in return and was content with the radio to fill the silence in the car until they reached the beach house.
Unpacking could wait forever if Harvey would keep singing to him. He greedily dragged him up the stairs and didn't leave his side all night.
The song was on every playlist from there on out and nobody could blame him. He got to hear Harvey sing the song every time while they were up at the Hamptons and it never failed to stop Mike in his tracks and take his breath away.
He never got it sung to him after vacation but the loving eyes and smile on Harvey's face was enough to melt his insides every time. From then on, when the notes reverberate in the air he had the comfort of knowing it was going to be the first song they danced to as a married couple and the song that will be around through all the highs and lows of their marriage.
