Author's Note

Hello everyone, I am thrilled that you've come across this little project that I've been working on. First and foremost, let me say that this story is actually written by two people, so if you come across some janky wording, that's why. Secondly, this is the first story my co author and I have ever written. Now, without further ado I present to you "My Alternate Academia". I'll see you at the end for more Author notes :).

Chapter 1: Weak

This is a superhuman society, with about 95% of the population possessing some uncanny ability commonly referred to as a quirk. Those who use their abilities for selfish gain are known as villains. Those who use their quirks to protect people from villains became our champions. They are called heroes and I come from a long line of them. Hello, my name is Kyo Kuro and I plan to become a great hero one day.

"KYO! I'M GONNA KILL YOU." My big sister Mao yelled from her room. I was just about out the door when she ran over to me soaking wet. I turned to face her, and looked her over. Her long orange hair was soaked in water and her round face was smudged in ruined makeup. I stared into my sister's commanding green eyes.

"My goodness Mao, whatever happened to you?" I said nonchalantly, remembering how I'd taken great pleasure in placing that bucket of water over her door. She held up the now empty bucket in front of me.

"I think you know exactly what happened, you will pay for this, glowworm." At that exact moment, my other sister Kumiko came home carrying groceries in her hand. Kumiko was technically older than me by five minutes but what does that count? As soon as she saw Mao, Kumiko immediately dropped the groceries and put her hands up to her mouth. Her face was round and her eyes golden. As for hair color, Kumiko and I shared a golden color. My eyes are green though.

"Oh my god, Mao what happened to you?" she said in a very convincing voice. What brilliant acting by my dearest sister. I smiled to myself as Mao's face turned from angry to enraged.

"You too? You're gonna do this now?"

"What do you mean Mao? She is just concerned for you. Perhaps you should go take a shower." I said mockingly. Mao bit her lip, and without another word stomped off to the bathroom. Kumiko and I high-fived each other once she was out of earshot. She returned to the groceries and began taking them inside.

"You know what this means?" She asked me.

"What does this mean?" I asked as I moved to assist her with the groceries.

"Now that we've both gotten her twice, the truce is off glowworm" She said while poking my nose.

"Oh yeah? Well then, you're going down."

"Bring it."

10 years earlier

Kyo and his sisters were reading a book in bed together. Well, mainly it was Mao, since she was the only one who could read. Kyo was testing out his new quirk by being a nightlight. He beamed with joy for every second his quirk was active. It was only when the light began to flicker that something felt wrong. It started with a simple dimming in light output, but then things seemed to take a turn. All of a sudden intense pain shot through the hand that he'd been using to light the pages up.

"Kyo are you alright?" Kumiko asked out of genuine concern when his light went out. Kyo began to take heavy breaths through his teeth. The pain in his hand continued to grow. He refused to cry, especially in front of his sisters like this. When he finally spoke all he could think to say was,

"It… hurts." Mao took his hand and brought out her own flashlight to inspect it.

"Hmm, it looks to just be a really bad rash, shouldn't the doctor have warned you about this? Oh well, get yourself an ice pack, it's time for bed anyway."

"Yes mam." The young boy got out of his big sister's bed and made his way down the dark hallway. Up ahead of him, Kyo could see the kitchen lights still on, and he heard mom and dad's voices from the kitchen. Kyo decided to listen behind the wall, even though he felt that he probably shouldn't.

"So, what do you think of the whole ordeal with Kyo?" He heard his mother inquire.

"Well, Kyo's quirk is the weakest in our family. Since he's not particularly fit, I think we should prohibit him from ever doing hero work." Kyo's eyes widened as he heard his father voice his opinion. The rash on his hand was suddenly the last thing on his mind.

"I agree," mother replied. "His quirk is far too weak to do any hero work, and no doubt he'll be bullied in school for it. Though I don't think full prohibition is the answer. Instead we should just let him try to be a hero, and then when he inevitably fails any school entrance exam we can start looking at other career options," His mother stated mercilessly. Kyo couldn't help the tears that were beginning to form on his face. *Momma and daddy think I'm weak?* The little one thought to himself. He tried his best not to make any noise and alert his parents.

"I think that Mao and Kumiko should keep an eye on him for us. I don't want him to get bullied in school," father said. Now Kyo's pitiful attempt at silencing himself was deemed useless. He practically collapsed onto the floor and began balling his eyes out. Mother and father went silent in the kitchen. Kyo continued to cry until he felt a hand touch him.

"Kyo honey, what's wrong?" His mother asked arrogantly, still somehow unaware of his tiny deception. Kyo looked up through his tears,

"You think my quirk is useless, you don't want me to be a hero, and you're sending Mao and Kumiko to protect me. Why is my quirk useless mama?" Now was the moment that Mr. and Mrs. Kuro realized how much they'd messed up. Mr. Kuro knelt down next to his son,

"We don't think your quirk is useless son, we just think it wouldn't be very good if you were a hero."

"But you DO think it's useless," Kyo accused him, "You said that I'm the weakest in the family. Is that really what you think?" Mrs Kuro began stroking Kyo's golden hair in a vain attempt of comfort,

"Of course that's not what we think dear, we just think that you don't have the same potential as someone like Mao or Kumiko does." Immediately after the words left her mouth mrs. Kuro understood her blunder. Kyo's tears only thickened as he reluctantly processed what she'd said.

"What if I want to become a hero anyway?" He asked. Mrs. Kuro exchanged a look with her husband, they both knew how that would end.

"I don't think that you'll get very far with that. You can try to prove me wrong but I'll be here once you fail." Mr. Kuro explained, what was her husband trying to do here? How was breaking a boy's spirit supposed to help anything? Nonetheless, she said nothing and gave Kyo some time to think it all through. Eventually he looked up and sniffled while his eyes soaked in tears.

"I… I just want to…" He faltered,

"Just try to think about it honey, and remember we'll support you in any endeavor you choose," Mrs. Kuro finished. "Right now I think that it's time for you to go to bed." Her son looked extremely downtrodden and he couldn't break eye contact with the floor.

"ok…" he sighed in disappointment and Mrs. Kuro walked her son back to his room to tuck him in.

Author's note

Well hello again, did you enjoy chapter 1? ;). If you haven't figured it out yet all these characters that you will meet are my OCs :D. That's right, there will be no Deku here ;). This chapter is quite shorter than the others will be, most of my chapters are will be 2000-3000 words in length, but this is intended to be more of a prologue. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as we enjoyed writing it. I don't know how consistent I'll be with updating this story, the writing process is slow as I'm sure you know. If this story gets enough support perhaps a regular uploading schedule will happen but we'll see. I've been talking for way too long, so I'm gonna this authors note here. See you next chapter. ;)
